Dear Welcome to The NetLetter, established in 1995 as a dedicated newsletter for Air Canada retirees.
We have evolved into the longest running aviation-based newsletter for Air Canada, TCA, CP Air, Canadian Airlines and all other Canadian-based airlines that once graced the skies. The NetLetter is self-funded and is always free to subscribers. It is operated by a group of volunteers and is not affiliated with any airline or associated organizations. The NetLetter is published on the second and fourth weekend of each month. Hello Team NetLetter,
The article regarding Kelowna that was in the NetLetter #1549 caught my eye as you had requested feedback if we had recognized anyone in the photos. Two individuals that I had worked with during my career at PW/CP/AC were in the photos.
John Currie went on to become a supervisor at YVR Airport for many years. His Scottish accent never left him.
Lew Stannard's name was of particular interest. I worked with Lew in Seattle (SEA). I was the Manager Cargo Sales and Service, NW USA from 1988 to 1998, based in SEA. Lew had been the Station Manager in SEA for PW/ Canadian for a number of years, when I started in SEA. We worked closely, especially at the startup of the Cargo Sales Office.
We initially shared office space at the Cargo facility, but when Time Air took over the SEA/YVR route, Lew moved to an office at the Airport Terminal. He was very well known and respected amongst his Airline peers in SEA. PW and subsequently Canadian and Time Air, utilized Third Party handling for airport and cargo operations, so he had made many contacts over the years.
At various times the airport handlers were Braniff, Mexicana and American Airlines and for cargo it was Airline Services who were agents for Pan Am, Continental and Wien Air Alaska. Cargo handling was moved to a neutral handler in 1991, Gateway Freight Services.
As I recall, I believe Lew retired about 1995, and moved to Lake Cushman, Washington.
I guess it's a sign of the times, as of the ten airlines I mentioned above, only three are still in existence.....

Hi Guys, The article on the 1981 Banff-Jasper relay team in the January 11, 2025 issue ( NL # 1549) brought back memories of a similar challenge that I was in. In June 1988, Duncan Rhokar from YYZ sales was the organizer and logistics planner for our group of 16 runners to run the reverse Jasper – Banff. We were each to run a leg of about 15-20 kms. It would be interesting to hear from some of the group that participated. I have attached a picture of the group with names and an article that was written about the event. Regards, Nick
Editors' Note: We found the article Nick refers to in Horizons issue #727 - August 24, 1988.

Hi Folks,
The recent issues of the NetLetter ( NL #1548) highlighting the Concorde brought back memories of the opening of Mirabel (YMX) airport. In October 1975 the airport hosted an open-house. Hundreds of people showed up, so much so that there was a line-up of cars from the Laurentian Autoroute along the access road to the terminal building.
When we eventually reached the parking area, like many other sightseers, we had the run of the terminal building and the apron where stood the Concorde. People milled about taking pictures and looking at awe at such a sleek aircraft. It certainly stole the attention away from the modern terminal building. It’s hard to imagine that it is almost fifty years ago.

Shirlee Schacter has sent us this information and photos -
The Ontario District Air Canada Pionairs had a record turnout at their traditional Christmas Luncheon at Lionhead Golf and Country Club in Brampton, Ontario, on December 4, 2024.
|
District Director, Carla Marraffino, presented a gift to outgoing Director, Lesley Huether, in appreciation of her tireless efforts on behalf of Ontario District members.
Keynote speaker, Deedee Lannon, Past President of National Pionairs, presented an update on the member benefits achieved in 2024 and reviewed upcoming events slated for 2025.
In addition to a festive buffet and a Memorabilia display, the melodic renditions of the roving violinist, Miriam Cacciacarro of Studio Forte (photo below), added to the overall ambiance. The event concluded with a draw for prizes which made for many happy winners. Even the first snowfall did not deter former colleagues from rekindling friendships at this popular annual event.

In February 2002, Joe Gulyes sent us this memory regarding the North Star -
Little known, but on December 1, 1960, Ray Bicknell and I happened to operate the first flight into the new terminal building at Dorval when it opened.
We were doing a Montreal - Toronto - Montreal turnaround flight late in the evening of November 30, 1960, scheduled to arrive back at Montreal after midnight on December 1. Didn't give it much thought at the time as there was a Viscount flight departing slightly ahead of us to Montreal with a stop at Ottawa, being driven by another well-known pollster, Jack Parnham.
To our surprise, as we trundled up to the new terminal, no Viscount!! Plenty of press and flashbulbs and Ray and I made the front page of the Gazette next morning. Rather fitting, the old girl (#206) shortly to retire, proverbially chuffing her way up to the gate 23 area as the first one in.
Appears, during a rush turnaround at Ottawa, during startup, the old power cart was positioned under the Viscount's wing flaps, and not removed before flaps were selected as part of the after start checklist, resulting in a very embarrassed crew. Not to mention Incident/Accident Reports.
Another fact is that the Canadair North Star operated under a special Flight Permit with TCA, rather than the usual certification. This created some problems for subsequent purchasers of the fleet, details of which are now getting shrouded in the mists and memory of time.
Following the retirement of the North Star, and a brief period with Nordair, I ended up for a few years flying around the Mediterranean and North Africa in the RAF. Saw several Argonauts operated by Air Malta, and sundry other carriers, destinations into Africa, out of Brussels, cargo unknown!
Just another anecdote from - retired Captain Joe Gulyes. Think I'll join Bick in Mexico. My bones could use some of the warmth via Tequila/Lime.
Joe Gulyes.

Ottawa takes over winners' circle.
A group of 50 Ottawa ACRA members enjoyed a night at the races during the fall 1985 even if not everybody came up a winner.
The evening of harness racing at Rideau Carleton Raceway enjoyed a delicious meal and a race named after the group which presented the winning horse, 'Flying Turkey', with a beautiful blanket. While they were at it, the ACRA people had their picture taken in the winners' circle with 'Turkey'.
Rumour has it that a certain individual went home with his pockets bulging. Thanks go to Rick Hotte for organizing the event.

Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous February 17 - 26, 1989.
The annual high spirited, foot stompin' winter carnival known as Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous is a festival designed to thaw out the crustiest of sourdoughs, and to warm the hearts of any stranger to the North.
To Yukoners, Rendezvous is a ritual. A time to shake off the dregs of winter and test ones speed and strength.

'Vic' and 'Renée'
NetLetter readers can certainly note that we quite frequently publish content relating to the evolution of aviation in Canada's North. There is a very good reason - it is an endlessly fascinating topic.
So when the 'Featured Video' from this issue popped up on my YouTube subscription, I was delighted to watch this bit of Canadian history.
Far too much info to post here so please take a few moments to watch the video and click the reference links below for details. For this piece I am focusing on just a condensed history of the two aircraft 'Vic' and 'Renée'.
Imperial Oil Company’s Junkers JL-6 G-CADP ('Vic') and G-CADQ ('Renée') were designed and built in Germany and modified in the United States. When Imperial Oil discovered oil at what is now Norman Wells, circa 1921, It required a more efficient way than rail and barge to transport workers and supplies from Edmonton.
The two aircraft were acquired and ferried from New York to Edmonton in the winter of 1920-21. They were given their names by Mrs. A.M. McQueen, wife of Imperial Oil’s vice-president.
G-CADP – 'Vic', named for company president Charles Taylor’s daughter, Victoria.
G-CADQ – 'Renée', named for Taylor’s secretary.
