. Nice to know.
. Jack Morgan sends us this information -
Just returned from a meeting announcing agreement between U.S. and Canada for
pre-clearance at Halifax International Airport.
Some initial space was set aside during the last $70 million renovation but it
will still be 18 months before the program begins.
Bernie Miller, former Air Canada VP is chairman of the airport board and has
done a terrific job of building and renovating without incurring any debt. A
further $80 million will be spent to implement this move without increasing
landing fees or airport improvement charges. This is good news for all pass
holders as it will relieve some of the pre-clearance pressure at YYZ and YUL
and not increase cost.

Subject: For my flying buddies - Night Before Christmas
'Twas the night before Christmas, and out on the ramp,
Not an airplane was stirring, not even a Champ.
The aircraft were fastened to tie downs with care,
In hopes that come morning, they all would be there.
The fuel trucks were nestled, all snug in their spots,
With gusts from two-forty at 39 knots.
I slumped at the fuel desk, now finally caught up,
And settled down comfortably, resting my butt.
When the radio lit up with noise and with chatter,
I turned up the scanner to see what was the matter.
A voice clearly heard over static and snow,
Called for clearance to land at the airport below.
He barked his transmission so lively and quick,
I'd have sworn that the call sign he used was "St. Nick".
I ran to the panel to turn up the lights,
The better to welcome this magical flight.
He called his position, no room for denial,
"St. Nicholas One, turnin' left onto final."
And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Rutan-built sleigh, with eight Rotax Reindeer!
With vectors to final, down the glideslope he came,
As he passed all fixes, he called them by name:
"Now Ringo! Now Tolga! Now Trini and Bacun!
On Comet! On Cupid!" What pills was he takin'?
While controllers were sittin', and scratchin' their head,
They phoned to my office, and I heard it with dread,
The message they left was both urgent and dour:
"When Santa pulls in, have him please call the tower."
He landed like silk, with the sled runners sparking,
Then I heard "Left at Charlie," and "Taxi to parking."
He slowed to a taxi, turned off of three-oh
And stopped on the ramp with a "Ho, ho-ho-ho..."
He stepped out of the sleigh, but before he could talk,
I ran out to meet him with my best set of chocks.
His red helmet and goggles were covered with frost
And his beard was all blackened from Reindeer exhaust.
His breath smelled like peppermint, gone slightly stale,
And he puffed on a pipe, but he didn't inhale.
His cheeks were all rosy and jiggled like jelly,
His boots were as black as a cropduster's belly.
He was chubby and plump, in his suit of bright red,
And he asked me to "fill it, with hundred low-lead."
He came dashing in from the snow-covered pump,
I knew he was anxious for drainin' the sump.
I spoke not a word, but went straight to my work,
And I filled up the sleigh, but I spilled like a jerk.
He came out of the restroom, and sighed in relief,
Then he picked up a phone for a Flight Service brief.
And I thought as he silently scribed in his log,
These reindeer could land in an eighth-mile fog.
He completed his pre-flight, from the front to the rear,
Then he put on his headset, and I heard him yell, "Clear!"
And laying a finger on his push-to-talk,
He called up the tower for clearance and squawk.
"Take taxiway Charlie, the southbound direction,
Turn right three-two-zero at pilot's discretion"
He sped down the runway, the best of the best,
"Your traffic's a Grumman, inbound from the west."
Then I heard him proclaim, as he climbed thru the night,
"Merry Christmas to all! I have traffic in sight."

While we can't believe it was his intended target, the pilot of a Mooney
M20F
can add the dubious distinction of using a moving highway truck's trailer as a
landing strip -- and living to tell the tale. Mark Taylor Davis was trying to
get to the airport at Fabens, Texas (near El Paso) after the Mooney's engine
quit but he didn't quite make it. The plane left a couple of skid marks on top
of the trailer before falling onto the highway upside down. Neither Taylor nor
his wife Mercedes were hurt. Truck driver Raymond Bennett White Jr. said he
didn't hear a thing when the plane touched down.

NetLetter readers.
Be Prepared in the New Year 2005.
This post is to warn you that there will be changes in the way Terry and I
bring
The NetLetter to you via email.
Our webmaster Alan Rust, who has been giving us (Terry and I) his services
Gratis
for the past ten years will be upgrading his ACFamily Network and with that
so will we. Probably in the future your reading of the NetLetter will be
directly
off the ACFN forums and not via Electronic mail packets etc. On your part,
this just means that you will have to register yourselves (if you haven't
already done so) on ACFN and read the from the NetLetter in the Netletter
forums. FYI, I (or rather my alias) has been uploading the NetLetter in
ACFN for a number of years.
So it's been there all along for you to read.
FYI you don't need an email address to read anything on ACFN website
you only need to register so this saves the extra work involved in making
email changes.
Please advise me if this new procedure will be difficult for you to
accomplish.
BTW you can test this out at anytime.
Vesta and Terry for the NetLetter.

. Need to know.
Holiday time makes employee travel difficult. Regardless of which
destination you’re thinking about visiting, please be aware that
employee travel will be difficult for the next few weeks. From Dec. 15
to Jan. 15, flight loads on many international and sun destinations
will be full with both passengers and cargo. If you intend to travel,
be prepared for the possibility that you may not make it to your
destination, or may not be able to return home with ease. Loads during
this holiday period are high and while a flight may show open seats, it
doesn’t guarantee you will be boarded as cargo will take priority over
pass riders. Therefore, you’re encouraged to consider shopping around
for other travel choices. Be prepared rather than sorry. Buy ZED fare
tickets on other carriers before leaving home, they can always be refunded
if not used.

Jim Murray sends this info -
Just FYI,
Fed Ex in Burnaby, BC will not accept anything for Interline shipping,
(their term for retiree shipping) on a weekend. I found out the hard way
after calling the Fed Ex 1-800 # where I was told no problem. Fed Ex will
not give you the individual shipping point phone #s so it is hard to check

. George Brien sends this piece of history -
Stephenville NL (A.K.A. "Harmon Field)
Trans-Canada Airlines first began service into this Station
in Sept 1949 and TCA/AC continued service to this western NL
airport until 1989.
The land for the airport, about 8,000 acres, was leased to the US
Government on a 99 year lease in 1940. Construction began in 1941 and when
finished, it was the largest US Army Air Force Base outside of the
Continental USA. Its main mission to handle and service Trans-Atlantic
flights for the US Military.
Some history and pictures http://www.town.stephenville.nf.ca/march5.html
By 1950, the runway was extended to 10,000ft and the base was reported to
be "one of the most elegant on any overseas military installation".
Trans-Canada Airlines began service into Stephenville (YJT) on Sept 1 1949.
The aircraft was likely the "North Star" Flight 400 ? which was already
running the milk run YYZ/YUL/YQM/YQY/YQX/YYT.
It was four years later when I first saw YJT. It was a 2 month Regional
Spare assignment in the late fall of 1954.
The USAF base was very impressive and lived up to its "most Elegant " title
and TCA had space
in their "Terminal Bldg". The Nfld staff were great people to work with.
Downtown Stephenville was a bit of a disappointment however,
Click here and you will see why.
http://www.pinetreeline.org/photos/stephe/steph374.jpg
On a rainy day, the main street was really muddy!!
The Station Manager at the time was Henry F "Hank" Holand
and Opns Agents name that I can recall included Walter March, Bill Payn,
Earl Young, Vern Oake, Neil Dingwall.
The Station was quite busy, with lots of GI's heading out on leave etc.
along with the regular western NL travellers to and from YYZ etc.
The Air Cargo traffic inbound was very heavy as most of the stores,
especially fresh veg/fruit and meat, were supplied from wholesalers in
Sydney NS.
A DC3 was often flown in overnight from YQY. Seat loaded full of Cargo.
Especially near Xmas with all the Eatons parcels arriving.
As access to the base was restricted, TCA had a small office just outside
the main gate for handling
Air Cargo and ticketing for the non US personnel.
Ticketing etc for base personnel was all handled at the terminal. In
addition, all reservations for western Newfoundland were done from this
location. As there were no Sales staff at this station, all functions were
the responsibility of the Operations Agents.
It was quite unique for a Canadian Airline to be operating out of a USAF
controlled Air Base but it appeared to work well.
My time there was very short but hopefully some readers can fill in some
more details as there seems to be very little info available about this
TCA/Air Canada station.
p.s. The Main street was paved at last in the mid 50's .
In 1957, Dept. of Transport built a separate Terminal Building
for TCA.
1966- The USAF closed the base and it was sold back , including all the
buildings/infrastructure for one $dollar.

The best part of buying a CABIN FEVER calendar is knowing that every dollar
of the $20 purchase price goes to the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation
to help fund cancer research and patient care.
“CABIN FEVER” features flight attendants who are fun, fabulous, and
fifty-ish in playful but tasteful photos in their work environment. All net
proceeds from the sale of the calendars, at $20 each, will be donated to

More capacity being added to Western Canada for Winter 2005. Increased
activity in the petroleum industry, as well as the growing popularity
of Air Canada’s new simplified fare structure, have driven up customer
demand for destinations in Western Canada. As a result, beginning Jan.
10, daily non-stop service from Calgary-Fort McMurray will be
introduced as well as additional flights between Calgary and Edmonton,
and increased capacity on all Calgary-Grand Prairie flights. Also, an
additional flight from Calgary-Toronto will be added effective Jan. 5.
Air Canada launches double daily service between Vancouver and
Sydney, Australia with introduction of first ever nonstop flight
effective December 16, 2004.

Thanks for the reply on FedEx. I shipped a parcel and all you have to do is
show your AC identification. One thing I learned. Don't ship anything on a
Saturday as there is a surcharge for holding over the weekend. It was $18
in my case. It certainly is a bargain. I had a fairly large box weighting
10 KG , cost at the post office was $85 by land and sea taking 6 to 8 weeks
or $285 to send it express. The FedEx was $71 taking 3 to 4 days

If you've been flinching lately at fuel bills from your SUV, imagine
how the airlines must feel, with that big fleet of thirsty gas-guzzlers and
a big empty wallet. United Air Lines, which is struggling to emerge from
bankruptcy, has started fuel-efficiency classes for its flight crew. Pilots
-- all 7,200 of them -- and 300 dispatchers are required to attend a
one-day class that shows how to cut back on refueling to lower the weight
of the airplane, thereby burning less fuel. United spokesman Joseph Burns
said that safety is the "No. 1 issue," so presumably they are not planning
to coast in for landings

Holidays Push Back Da Vinci Tests
Well, when you're running a space program with mostly volunteers,
you have to expect some hiccups. The da Vinci Project
<http://www.davinciproject.com/beta/>, a Canadian effort to launch a
civilian space flight, has pushed back test flights because of the
looming holiday season. "Over the holidays, some people become
extremely available and other people become totally unavailable,"
said project leader Brian Feeney. Feeney is now targeting January to
begin test flights from Kindersley, Saskatchewan, which isn't at its
best in January. A helium balloon will first hoist the capsule
before rocket engines ignite to boost it to an altitude of 100
kilometers. Feeney plans to fly the manned flights himself.

A helium balloon will first hoist the capsule
before rocket engines ignite to boost it to an altitude of 100
kilometers. Feeney plans to fly the manned flights himself.

. Did you hear about the very successful YXY CP/AC reunion in September
2003?
The first ever YXYCP Reunion was held at the Bayside Inn, Parksville, BC,
from September 26th to 28th, 2003. The weather was cooperative and the
weekend was hot and sunny. There were 70 attendees from Whitehorse,
Toronto, Calgary, Kelowna, Vernon, Vancouver, Coquitlam, Langley, Surrey,
Richmond, Saltspring Island, Lantzville, Duncan, Powell River and Victoria
made up of former and current passenger agents, management, maintenance
staff, owners of the Taku Hotel and pilots and flight attendants who flew
the Whitehorse route.
The fun weekend began with a wine and cheese registration party on Friday
night, with pilot George Serviss, doing a fly-by in his home built
aircraft. On Saturday, guests participated in golf at Qualicum and two
three-hour Zodiac tour adventures out into Georgia Strait and around the
islands. George and Henry Ilg did two more fly-bys in close formation later
that afternoon with Henry’s passengers, Jake Alexander and Dave McIntyre
grinning from ear to ear. Henry Ilg's wife, Ruth, riding with Serviss, had
an even bigger thrill as George performed several acrobatic maneuvers.
Saturday evening started off with a cocktail party in the banquet room
decorated with flags and banners generously donated by the City of
Whitehorse. In keeping with the theme, the place mats at each table were
copies of the Canadian Airlines DC 3 poster put out by CP Air in the 1980s.
On display around the room were pictures, albums, newspaper articles,
posters, and CP Air Pilot uniforms. There was also an 8mm film of
Whitehorse in the early days, provided by Dennis Baxendale, and Power Point
slide shows by Phil Kelsey and Rich Carret, displaying photographs of
Whitehorse and staff in the 1970’s.
As each person arrived, they were given a gift bag containing several Yukon
pins, a CD about Whitehorse and a very orange, collectable CP Air bottle
opener. After the cocktail party came dinner, then dancing. The buffet put
on by the hotel was delicious and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dinner.
After dinner there were several prizes given out, then a speech written by
Rex Terpening was read. Rex, who we were honoured to have at the reunion,
was a pioneer in airline maintenance and has been in the aviation industry
since the 1930s. A long time Yukoner, his speech was a highlight of the
evening. He and his wife Trudie received an emotional standing ovation.
After that, Marlie Kelsey, Don McWilliam and Tony Buckley spoke about their
different memories of Whitehorse. When the speeches were over there was
photo-taking, dancing and visiting until 01:00.
The next day, many people met in the morning and had breakfast together
before they reluctantly went their separate ways. Most noticeable
throughout the reunion were the many smiles and genuine pleasure that
everyone had in being together. Some people had not seen each other in more
than 20 years. There’s definitely going to be another, probably in two
years time(?) ... and rumour has it that George “Boogie” Brown is going to
organize it. For all those who couldn't make it this time, we missed you
and hope that you can join us at the next one.
Go to the website at www.cedarcoast.com/yxycp Find old friends and read the
stories. We had fun!
We are starting the planning for another reunion in fall of 2005 and would
like to hear from all the people who worked in YXY who would be interested
in another great reunion. This includes, Management, Passenger Agents,
Maintenance, Pilots, Baggage handlers, flight attendants, Past and present.
All are welcome.
Other BC District employees welcome to email as well.

. Found by Vesta - our chief pilot -
30 years later, Ottawa unveils plan for Pickering airport
TORONTO - The Greater Toronto Airports Authority released a draft plan
Tuesday to build a $2 billion airport on land expropriated by Ottawa more
than 30 years ago, for just that purpose.
The airport will be built in stages over a 30-year period and may
eventually handle 11 million passengers a year.
Protesters against the building of an airport in their community.
The airport authority said the facility would be located north of the town
of Pickering, just east of Toronto, and would generate $5 billion a year.
Money for the airport would be raised privately through bonds and the
securities market, said Steve Shaw, vice-president of the airport authority.
He said the new regional airport would take pressure off Toronto's Pearson
International Airport, which generates annual traffic of about 50 million
passengers per year.
"Pearson will always be the major international facility, but clearly there
is a need for regional facilities," Shaw said. "General aviation needs to
be accommodated. Pearson cannot handle that."
Among the general aviation traffic handled by the new airport would be
recreational and company aircraft, including helicopters, and flying schools.
Ottawa has been gathering land
The federal government started expropriating land for a second
international airport for Toronto more than three decades ago.
It abandoned a Pickering airport project in 1972 after public opposition
and a withdrawal of provincial government support.
Some people who live in the area oppose the new plan. Stephen Frederick,
president of Voters Organized to Cancel Airport Lands, said the area does
not need another airport.
"The [passenger] forecasts are exaggerated to try and substantiate an
airport," Frederick told the Globe and Mail. "It's ludicrous and it is just
going to lead to a complete waste of resources."
Montreal's Mirabel Airport closed last month after opening to great fanfare
in 1975. Supporters predicted that Mirabel would become a gateway to the
world, luring 60 million passengers annually by 2010. At its peak, it drew
no more than three million people a year.
The federal government will have the final say on the airport after a
public review and an environmental assessment. That's expected to take at
least two years.
Shaw estimated that design work could begin by 2007, and that the airport
could be open for business by 2012.

than 30 years ago, for just that purpose.

An update on employee travel from China. Until the end of December, Air Canada
cargo will be handling a high volume of shipments from China to Canada. As a
result, employee travel from the country will be difficult due to payload
limitations. Even if flights show space available, you may not get on because
of revenue cargo shipments that affect the maximum weight or space limitations
of an aircraft. According to company policy, revenue or non-revenue passengers
must travel with checked baggage. Therefore, if your bags cannot be stored in
the cargo area due to these limitations, you will also not be able to board the
aircraft. If you still plan to travel from China, consider alternate routings
through Japan, Korea or Hong Kong, and ensure that you have the appropriate
tickets for your back-up travel choices with you before you begin your journey.

Advance in commercial aviation technology
November 17, 2004
NASA's X-43A Supersonic Scramjet Breaks All-Time Speed Record...
Close To Mach 10...
At 110,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday afternoon, NASA's
scramjet-powered X-43A unmanned research vehicle flew at close to Mach 9.8,
nearly 7,000 miles per hour, breaking its own previous record of Mach 7, set in
March, for air-breathing engines. The flight is a "key milestone," said NASA
Administrator Sean O'Keefe, that will help to advance commercial aviation
technology. Supersonic combustion ramjets (scramjets) promise to make
ultra-high-speed flights within the atmosphere cheaper and safer, NASA said
Tuesday in a news release, and provide an alternative to rockets. The
technology can also be used in the first stage to Earth orbit.
...In A Flawless Test...
The 12-foot long, 5-foot-wide lifting-body scramjet vehicle, mated to a
modified Pegasus booster rocket, was launched from NASA's B-52B at about 47,000
feet, in restricted airspace northwest of Los Angeles. The booster carried it
up to 110,000 feet, where the X-43A separated and ignited its scramjet engine
for about 10 seconds. After burnout, the vehicle descended and splashed into
the ocean, as planned, and will not be recovered (fishing trip, anyone?). The
flight is the third and last of three unpiloted tests in NASA's Hyper-X
Program. The eight-year, $230-million program got off to a rough start in June
2001 when the first X-43A and its booster rocket had to be destroyed in
mid-air. The second attempt, in March of this year, successfully reached a
speed of Mach 7. Reinforced carbon-carbon composite material was added to the
leading edges of the vehicle's vertical fins for this week's flight, to handle
the higher temperatures generated by the higher speeds. The flight was
originally scheduled for Monday but was delayed due to electronics problems.
...Using A Simple, Sophisticated System
The scramjet engine design has no moving parts. The forward speed of the
aircraft itself, enhanced by the shape of the nose, compresses a stream of air
that is channeled into the engine, where it mixes with gaseous hydrogen fuel --
there are no fan blades that compress the air, as in a normal jet engine. In a
scramjet engine, the airflow through the whole engine remains supersonic. NASA
says such a design may be capable of flying at Mach 15 or more. Scramjets have
an advantage over rockets in that they use oxygen from the atmosphere, so no
heavy liquid-oxygen tanks are required. Also, scramjets can be throttled back
and flown more like an airplane, unlike rockets, which tend to produce nearly
or full thrust all the time.
