Airports to Tackle 'Weighty' Baggage Problems
Bags at Britain's busiest airport are to be limited to 32kg (70lbs) in
weight ? to reduce strains and injuries among luggage handling staff, it
was
announced today.
The restriction is being introduced at Heathrow airport by airport operator
BAA from June 1.
But the maximum weight limit relates only to single items of luggage and
does not affect passengers' overall baggage allowance or excess baggage
charges, which are set down by each individual airline.
BAA Heathrow managing director Mick Temple said: "We are committed to
implementing safe working practices airport wide which is why we want to
make sure that all our airlines adhere to the same guidelines to help
lessen
manual handling injuries among airport staff."
An average bag is around 20kg (44lbs), but some handlers have had to deal
with items of luggage weighing as much as 70kg.
Passengers who exceed the weight limit after June 1 will be asked to repack
their luggage into smaller units before they can check-in.
BAA will be placing scales inside each terminal so that passengers can
verify the weight of their luggage before they get to check-in. Bags will
also be available for passengers who need to re-pack at excess baggage
outlets in each terminal.
Christine Barringer, of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which is
backing the new initiative, said: "Manual handling injuries account for
around 40% of total airport injuries reported to HSE."

Obit: Retired Air Canada Captain Lindy Rood - Vice President of Flight
Operations
J. Lindsay (Lindy) Rood
J. Lindsay ("Lindy") Rood passed away peacefully in Calgary, following a
brief illness on Thursday April 29, 2004, at the age of 93.
Lindy was born on March 17th, 1911 in Berwick, NS, and was educated there
and at Dalhousie University. He enrolled in an extension course with the
Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and began his long and eventful career in
aviation. After earning his wings and a commission as a Pilot Officer in
the RCAF Reserves, he entered commercial aviation as a flying instructor
and barnstormer throughout Nova Scotia, and obtained an Engineer's License
as well. In 1933, Lindy became a flight instructor with the Cape Breton
Flying Club at Sydney, NS and two years later went to England to join
British Airways as a pilot. From 1935 to 1937, he flew routes, which
included London, Copenhagen and Stockholm. At this time, he earned his
British Navigator's Licence. In 1937 Lindy returned to Canada as one of the
first pilots to be hired by the newly formed Trans Canada Air Lines,
pioneering the Rocky Mountain route between Lethbridge and Vancouver. He
became one of the founding members of the Canadian Air Line Pilots
Association when a group of TCA pilots met in Winnipeg in December 1937 to
form an association. At the outbreak of World War II, Lindy was declared
essential to public service and prohibited from joining the military. The
Hon. C.D. Howe, who was head of the Canadian Department of Munitions and
Supply, seconded him in 1942 to the Return Ferry Service, flying the North
Atlantic Ocean between Montreal and Prestwick. Pilots engaged in this
war-time effort flew Liberator aircraft, converted to carry people rather
than bombs, and brought ferry crews back to Canada after they had made
their delivery of aircraft to the UK. In 1943 he was assigned to 10 Bomber
Reconnaissance Squadron at Gander and instructed on Liberator B-24 bombers.
Lindy was asked to help in the formation of the Canadian Government
Trans-Atlantic Air service, designed to deliver high ranking Allied
officers, government officials, special cargo and mail between Canada and
the UK with the greatest possible speed. He was named Chief Pilot of this
service and remained in that post until war's end when the service was
taken over by TCA. During the years of expansion of TCA, Lindy was highly
regarded for his abilities in every area of flight operations. He was put
in charge of all flying personnel selection and training. He was named a
senior member of many world aviation councils, representing TCA. In 1944,
Lindy went on to become Chief Pilot of TCA's Atlantic Operation and in 1947
he was named Superintendent of Flight Operations for TCA's trans-Atlantic
service. One of his major contributions was his leadership in aircraft
cockpit design and layout, which, with advanced electronics, resulted in
two pilots being capable of flying even the largest aircraft safely and
efficiently. From 1950 to 1968, Lindy was Director of Flight Operations for
TCA, which was renamed Air Canada in 1965. Throughout his years as head of
Flight Operations, he was an advocate for the development and use of motion
systems to make aircraft simulators fly more realistically. He introduced
the first of such systems in an early Air Canada simulator, a concept that
has since been accepted throughout the aviation industry. Lindy served as
Vice President of Flight Operations for Air Canada until his retirement in
1971, with nearly 20, 000 hours as pilot in command. Lindy was inducted as
a Member of Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame in 1974 with the following
citation:
"His leadership, dedication to safety of flight operations and wide-ranging
contributions to Canadian and international aviation have left an indelible
mark on the airline industry and have been of significant benefit to Canada."
Lindy is survived by three daughters, Suzanne (Sue) Cooke of Calgary;
Marnie (Ralph) Giguere of Austin, TX and Linda (Tom) Stanley, Bedford, NS;
a son Tom (Marjorie) of Campbell River, BC, twelve grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Velma (Don) Hills of St. John, NB and
Lillian (Jim) McGibbon of Beaverton, ON. He was predeceased by his wife Tod
and daughter Mary Allard.

It must be something in the air, but this week brought in a slew of reports
about pilots giving in to temptation -- doing things that are enticing, but
forbidden. In Australia on Saturday, a sightseeing pilot flew her two-seat

up to two years in jail. In Saginaw, Mich., a school principal was mortified

Edward B.K.James, Retiree #094153
Originally, I was with CP from 1959 - 1989, first as an Airport Agent
in YUL/YYZ/HNL then a CTO Agent in YVR and YYZ, then spent 18 years as a Sales
Rep,
mainly in YHMSD and finally YYZSD where I was forced into retirement when the
Wardair event took over the running of the old PWA. Many of us got the heave-ho
on the
same day.
Sad for me at the time, because it took me about 10 years to get over the
airline and travel industry.
Many in the Okanagan will remember me, because I
started a retirees group for CP Air retirees in the early '90's, and
they still meet, which pleases me no end, as I am a lifetime honoray
ex-president, having been the first.
As for others, I'm sure that they are all over Canada, and I wouldn't
mind hearing from some old friends from by-gone days, when the Airline
business was so exciting and so much fun !

a beautiful country.
Hope you come along.

I expect you read in the papers last week about two fine upstanding Canadians
who live in New York were the cause for an AA flight enroute to LHR had to
divert to SNN because of these two. The end result was that both spent Fri,
Sat,and Sun in jail and were in court on Mon. the judge fined them 60000 US
dollars. one got 3 and the other 7 months suspended jail sentence and bared
from flying for two years.
I understand that another airline took them back to New York They do not fool
around with this kind of thouble at Shannon

Round-up of Social Events:
We had a great time at our Old Tyme Music Hall with everyone joining in with
the songs, and having a ride on the Merry-go-Round. We wished Thelma Berry a
“Happy Birthday” on the way home on the bus she was 87 years young a couple of
days later. The coach driver handed in a red hat which someone had left on
the coach. Please claim from Jack. Thanks to Peter King for helping to
organise this event. A reminder that, on our events, we do require the
appropriate slips to be filled in and sent in with any monies. It does help
and saves us making up a form for the individuals. The next ACRA theatre trip
has been booked for 6th September and is
“Jailhouse Rock”. All theatre trips leave at 6.00 pm from Radius Park unless
otherwise stated. Don’t forget our popular tour of the West End and
surrounding area. The coach leaves Radius Park at 6.30 pm and will include a
pub stop halfway round. We are almost half-full already.
The St. Omer cross-Channel trip is now confirmed and more details will be in
the next newsletter. Our North American trip to Phoenix has proved very
popular with 58 booked on the coach, and a waiting list of 26. All
arrangements and attractions have been confirmed. Separate information sheets
are sent with each month’s newsletter.
Our last event this year is our Christmas lunch which will be held again at the
Savill Court Hotel our third lunch at this venue. Last year 134 attended,
and we anticipate more will be there this year.

Emrites is to offer the world's first regular, airnorne wireless laptop
service.
The Dubai-based international airline will launch the feature soon onboard all
of its new Airbus A340-500's.
With the new service, passengers can uise their own email accounts, including
corporate e-mail, in a secure environment. The A340-500 will be the first
aircraft to include a wireless LAN certified for passengers' own Wi-Fi-enabled
laptop computers.
One of the main requirements for the hiring of flight attendants in 1939 -
called stewardesses back then - was that they be registered nurses. This
remained a requirement until 1957 for most airlines in north America. Other
requirements were: they had to be single, no more than 5 foot 4 inches in
stature and no more that 115 pounds.
(Before the introduction of the jumbo aircraft!)
The WWII Canso, one of two which have languished at Nanaimo airport for the
past decade, has finally left for the U.K. having been purchase from its
Malaysian owner by Catalina Aircraft Ltd. The rebuilt aircraft is now ready to
take up duties in aerial photography.
New Toronto start-up AeroFalcon has delayed plans to operate a service from
Toronto to Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka with two leased B747-400
as they are awaiting clearances to operate the North Pole route.

In 1967, Marian Talbot made a figurine and she gave it to me when
Jack was working. I have cherished it for all these years and
would like to give it to her family if they want it. I don't
know how to get in touch with them, although I believe Marian
died some time ago. Can anybody help me with this little
project?
Thanks.

Golden Week travel heats up. This year’s Golden Week holidays in Japan will
be very strong for Air Canada. The traditional spring holiday combines a string
of four public holidays with two weekends and some additional days off work to
make an eleven-day holiday from April 29 to May 9. If you plan to travel, be
aware that many flights from Japan (five almost everyday, with the
re-introduction of Nagoya/Vancouver on April 29) will be very full throughout
the week starting April 26
and very full to Japan in the first week of May. Last year Golden Week was
weak due to the effect of SARS so there is more demand for overseas travel this
year, especially to Canada.

When French writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery flew off alone into a
July night in 1944 and vanished, his mysterious end became an integral part of
the story of his life. Now, hundreds of pieces of a wrecked Lockheed Lightning,
found on the Mediterranean seabed off the coast of Provence, have been
positively identified as the airplane he was flying that night on a wartime spy
mission. French authorities confirmed the find yesterday, based on a serial
number found on a piece of the tail. Saint-Exupery is beloved in France as the
author of "The Little Prince." No body was found, and so far the wreck has not
revealed any cause for the crash.
On the eve of the Easter recess, the US Senate by a vote of 78-19 passed a
pension accounting relief act that will help corporate America, including
several US Major airlines, defer billions of dollars in contributions to
underfunded plans over the next two years.
United Airlines is the biggest airline beneficiary of pension reform
legislation signed into law by President Bush
Kenya Airways' first Boeing 777-200ER will be delivered to Nairobi next month
direct from Seattle - flying the 16.5 hours non-stop and aiming for the World
Speed record for aircraft of this type. The airline is the first in Africa to
own the 777 - the world's fastest-selling wide-bodied aircraft.
CanJet, Canada's Low-Fare Airline, is pleased to announce it will launch
scheduled weekly service between Hamilton, Ontario and Orlando, Florida on June
19th.
The Italian government postponed a decision on possible financial aid to
Alitalia, but Labor Minister Roberto Maroni said Friday that the cabinet will
discuss a new decree to help the airline sector on April 29.
The FAA is reportedly dubious of allowing El Al aircraft equipped with the
system, called Flight Guard, to land at U.S. airports due to safety concerns
about the flare-based technology. Israeli Transportation Minister Avigdor
Lieberman is slated to discuss the issue with U.S. Transportation Secretary
Norman Mineta today, according to Reuters. El Al's first Flight Guard-protected
aircraft are expected to launch in June. The Flight Guard system automatically
releases diversionary flares if a heat-seeking missile is detected by an
on-board sensor. It reportedly costs about $1 million per airplane to install.

. Joe and Karen Mallory send their impressions of Thailand -
Hi all,
We are back from a most fantastic trip to Thailand put on by the Thailand
Interline Club in Bangkok. This is without a doubt the best trip we have been
on yet. It took 28 hours to get there from Toronto to Bangkok through Vancouver
and Hong Kong. The first evening of our arrival the host club put on a nice
welcome dinner for us. It would appear that because of the Chicken Flu there
was very poor attendance this year at what is usually a very popular package.
There were only 8 people on it this year consisting of Karen and I, John and
Carole Lowe, and Lois and Alan Pickard (longtime friends of ours) and Inge and
Bernard Hiebel, some new friends from Germany.
We started with a tour of the historic and beautiful Royal Grand Palace in
Bangkok, Then saw the temple of the Emerald Buda followed by a tour of a Gem
Factory. The next day we travelled to the floating market where everyone got
into the haggling and bargaining. We had a luxury bus and driver for the whole
trip and a terrific guide with a great sense of humour, named Mr. Sam.
We travelled to different cities in the north of Thailand where we rode
elephants, rafted down a river, took a 35 km ride down the Mae Khong River, saw
other historic sites, rode in cattle drawn carts, visited small tribal villages
in the jungle, and visited the Golden Triangle. We had plenty of time for
shopping and souvenir hunting, and went to a silk factory, a wood carving
factory (all Teak), a custom tailor, an orchid nursery, and had a Thai massage.
We also had the opportunity to visit both Laos and Burma. What an eye opener
that was.
Nearly all meals were included in the package and they were all excellent. For
the most part they were buffets consisting of both Thai and European foods. We
saw two very good stage shows, one a dinner theater presentation of traditional
Thai dancers and the other bit of a surprise. It was the world famous Alcazar
Cabaret show consisting completely of transvestites.
The Thai people are warm, friendly, courteous and respectful. There was not a
single incident the whole time we were there. At the last location we stayed
for two nights there was a music festival on. There must have been at least
100,000 young people in the streets around our hotel. Even then everyone was
exceptionally well behaved. They made us feel very welcome.
Our final two days in Pattaya south of Bangkok were concluded with a very nice
closing dinner with the organizing interline club. They treated us
exceptionally well the whole trip and I really compliment them on the whole
package. It was far more than we had anticipated and I would do it again
tomorrow. Thanks to Yinglek Chandrtat and her whole team.
Finally we flew back from Bangkok to Hong Kong and spent two night there.
Really we only had one day to explore and most of that time was spent
shooooooping. We got around on the modern subway with no problem and spent part
of the day on the island of Hong Kong and the rest in Kowloon. I think this is
the most populated area in the world, with a high cost of living and every
modern convenience. We will have to spend more time there some day in the
future.
I took about 400 with a digital camera.
Finally, for those of you who are related to the airlines I highly recommend
the Thai interline club package. It is run every year and is definitely a
winner. For those who are not airline people, you will never regret a trip to
Thailand. It is historic yet progressive, there is an abundance of things to do
and see and visitors are made to feel wanted and welcome.
Cheers for now,
Joe and KarenThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Spread the word… it’s business as usual at Air Canada. We need your help.
With all the news about our current situation, customers and potential
clients may express concern or anxiety about making their travel plans with
Air Canada. We are asking employees and retirees, and their families, to
act as ambassadors for the company and to loudly and repeatedly reassure
and encourage friends, neighbours and acquaintances to continue booking Air
Canada with confidence. As Robert has stated, we are about to enter the
strongest travel period of the year with our cash balances in a healthy
position. It’s business as usual at Air Canada.

One of our colleagues needs your help and prayers. Aeroplan Customer Sales
and Service Agent Tim Cheung’s 13-year old daughter, Alicia, has a rare
brain tumour which has mystified doctors in B.C. In an effort to shed some
light on this baffling illness and hopefully find treatment to keep the
tumour at bay, Alicia has been referred to Toronto’s Sick Children’s
Hospital. To help support the family, Air Canada will provide for Alicia’s
flight through our Kids’ Horizons hospital transportation program, but the
family will be incurring additional expenses related to living out of town.
To help defray some of these costs, an Alicia Cheung Trust Account has been
set up at the Royal Bank of Canada. If you would like to help, please refer

28R, respectively, at FCM...
Tower: Cessna XXX, do you have traffic?
Cessna: Cessna XXX has the traffic, he's right beside me.
Tower: Eagle XXX, traffic is a Cessna 182 on parallel for 28L, Eagle XXX is
cleared for landing, Runway 28R.
Christen Eagle: Roger, Eagle XXX has traffic, cleared to land Runway 28R.
Cessna: Tower, Cessna XXX here, can you let me know when ...
(pause)

The Brits just can't get over their love affair with the late great
Concorde, and now they are looking forward to a final epic journey of one the
sleek birds, bound for the National Museums of Scotland (NMS). The NMS
announced
on Monday its plan to transport G-BOAA, the first-ever Concorde to enter
service, from Heathrow Airport to its final home at the national Museum of
Flight, just outside Edinburgh. The complex 10-day plan calls for G-BOAA to
travel via highway to the River Thames, then sail by barge to London, where it
will make a dramatic final salute to the London public as it is lifted above
deck outside the Houses of Parliament. The barge will then continue under Tower
Bridge and out to the North Sea, where it will embark on the longest section of
its journey, up the east coast to Scotland.

Subject: Kahului Airport
Thought I'd pass something on to fellow travellers, they were so
helpful when I was asking about car rentals on Maui. A co-Pionair had given
me some very useful advice before we went. AC is checked in by United in
Maui. It's not an air conditioned airport. Mosquitos have a heydey, you're
dressed to travel, lines are long, it's hot. Moral of the story is, get to
the airport early! Maui is still well worth the trouble. Thanks Ruby
Livingston.
