UK airport baggage handlers vote to strike. British airport baggage
handlers
have voted to go on strike, threatening serious disruption this summer at some
of the UK’s busiest hubs including London’s main Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
Workers for ground handling group Aviance, voted to strike in protest of the
firm’s 2.5 per cent pay offer, the Transport and General Workers Union (T&G)
said. No dates have been set for the strike action however the union is holding
more talks with the firm on Wednesday.

. And now for something positive about 'our' airline -
Reprinted from the Pionair newsletter issued by Duane Frerichs,
This is a tale of two airlines -- or how Air Canada saved a weekend from
disaster. We were booked on the newly launched CanJet service from Toronto to
Midway Airport in Chicago last weekend. The airport is much closer to our
destination than the huge O'Hare Airport way out of the city, which was the
reason for picking this flight.
The flight was to depart at 8:20 a.m. and, after overestimating the rush-hour
traffic, we checked in at the CanJet desk at Pearson Airport around 6:30 a.m.
No problem -- bags checked by friendly staff, seats selected and we joined the
very long lineup for U.S. immigration. We were finally through the other side
and had more than an hour to wait, dawdling over cups of coffee. We arrived at
the boarding gate 30 minutes before departure and could see the jet through the
window. About 15 minutes before we were due to leave, a member of CanJet's
staff casually announced that the flight had been cancelled due to mechanical
difficulties. All would-be passengers rushed to the desk, where staff said the
airline had no facilities to rebook us on another airline. Our options were to
wait until the CanJet evening flight to Midway, but there was a strong chance
it would be delayed, or come back the next morning, or get a refund. We could
leave our bags with them for when we did manage to fly. We demanded our bags
and were escorted through the immigration tide back to the main terminal. Using
CanJet's 800 number, we were told it was another flight that had the mechanical
problem and our jet had been switched to that flight while ours was cancelled.
The evening flight was also cancelled -- and had been when the gate staff had
offered to rebook us on it.
We had to get to Chicago that day, so spent the next hour on the free shuttle
buses going from terminal to terminal trying to buy tickets. The prices on
United, American and the Air Canada counter for last-minute flights were
expensive, so we were getting ready to give up.
Then a quick call to a travel agent nabbed two Tango fares on an Air Canada
flight early that afternoon to O'Hare at about the same price as the CanJet
charter. The agent advised us to go back to CanJet and confirm we would get a
refund for the cancelled flight. We had to argue with several staff members
before the refund was promised -- and then only for the cancelled outward
flight. We would have to take the return flight four days later. Having lost
confidence that the plane would turn up and already having a new Air Canada
return flight, we refused to leave and were finally told we could have a credit
for the return leg, which we had to use within a year. Eventually, a supervisor
on the telephone agreed to refund our money. Back at the Air Canada check-in
with nothing more than two reference numbers given over the telephone by the
travel agent, they found the bookings, despite the fact I had copied down one
number incorrectly, and gave us printed copies of the outward and return
flights.
Eight hours after arriving at Pearson and a second slow trip through U.S.
immigration, we departed and had a pleasant flight with friendly service on Air
Canada, arriving on time.
Coming back four days later, we arrived at O'Hare early and the Air Canada
check-in attendant said there was an earlier flight leaving in 40 minutes if we
wanted to try for it. We did, but the line for security snaked way down the
terminal, so we decided not to risk it and stayed with the later flight. As we
went to join the long line-up an Air Canada baggage handler took our boarding
passes and said to follow him. He took us to the front of the security line and
we were through in under five minutes, finding ourselves at the departure gate
as they began boarding the earlier flight. We had more than two hours before
our flight left and there were severe thunderstorms forecast. I asked the Air
Canada attendant at the boarding gate about getting on the early flight and she
took over. She tracked our checked luggage to X-ray and said she would make
sure it made it on to the plane, got us two seats together and we boarded with
the last few passengers. On board, we found ourselves in executive class. Again
the flight left right on time with excellent service, arriving in Toronto
early.
It was enough to restore our faith in Air Canada after trying to avoid it the
last few years. The friendly, obliging service was appreciated and surprising
after all these employees have been through in recent months. They saved our
weekend after we were abandoned by CanJet -- which is now Can'tJet, as far as
we are concerned.

. . Found on the internet.
The last 'movement' of a British Airways Concorde from Heathrow was by barge
to its final resting place at the Museum of Flight in East Fortune in
Scotland. The Concorde was the first aircraft Concorde flown by British
Airways G-BOAA which left Heathrow by road, taking the A30 and A4 to the Thames
at Isleworth in West London, and transferred to a barge. However, time was
taken to allow for photography to be taken as it passed down the River
Thames. The barge having had a special deck installed that elevated the aircraft
once it reached London's landmarks so that it could be seen, and was lowered
when passing under bridges.
When the supersonic Concorde fleet was retired last year, one of the glamorous
birds came to rest on a barge outside the Intrepid Air & Space Museum on the
Hudson River, on Manhattan's West Side. Last weekend, the airplane opened to
the public, and unlike at most aviation museums, visitors are invited not only
to gaze upon the airplane from a distance, but also to walk right on board and
get a close-up view of the cabin and cockpit. A timed "boarding pass" must be
picked up on arrival at the museum. The tours are limited to 1,500 people per
day -- so get there early; it's been sold out every day so far. Seattle's
Museum
of Flight also offers on-board tours of its Concorde, but the National Air &
Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center, in Virginia, does not.
Is that a micro chip in Fido’s ear? On July 3, a new European Union (EU)
regulation for the transportation of dogs, cats and ferrets will go into
effect. For travel within the EU, and from third countries to the EU, these
pets are required to be marked either with a micro chip or a tattoo. Note:
tattoos will only be permissible for the next eight years. After that, only
micro chip identification will be allowed. The animals must be accompanied with
proper documentation and have proof of necessary vaccinations

PILOT KICKS TRUSTEE OFF PLANE
A Hawaiian Airlines pilot declared his boss a safety hazard on Thursday and
asked him to leave his airplane. Capt. Craig Kobayashi told Josh Gotbaum, the
bankruptcy trustee now at the helm of the airline, that he was so angry with
Gotbaum that he didn't think he could safely fly the Boeing 767-300 with the
trustee aboard from Honolulu to San Francisco. Gotbaum apparently tried to
mention some of the positive things he's done for the airline, which has been
bankrupt since March, but Kobayashi wasn't swayed and asked Gotbaum to leave,
which he did.

Comox Valley Airport, gateway to the world-class skiing and salmon fishing of
Vancouver Island, British Columbia, this week began offering air travelers
'Wi-Fi' wireless Internet access in its brand-new 40,000 square-foot Cottingham
Terminal. Opti-Fi Networks, Ltd. is providing the fully-managed service.
When the longest-ever nonstop airline flight went into service on Monday --
18-plus hours between New York's Newark Airport and Singapore, over a
10,000-mile route, in an Airbus A340-500 -- the pilots became inadvertent
guinea pigs. To document their response to the stresses of the flight, the crew
will be hooked up with a special watch attached to a handheld computer, which
will monitor their alertness levels, Singapore authorities told the Associated
Press on Tuesday. After each flight, the pilots are scanned with a
brainwave-measuring device to check how rested they are. The tests are to see
whether new regulations are needed for the super-long flights.
TAXIWAY LANDINGS TARGETED
When in doubt, spell it out. The NTSB hopes to make it easier for pilots flying
into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to land in the right spot by urging
the FAA to clearly mark a taxiway that has been accidentally used as a runway
several times in the last few years.
In the most recent incident on Jan. 19 an Air Canada Jazz Dash-8 landed on
Taxiway Tango at Sea-Tac on a VFR approach to Runway 16R. It was about the
fifth such incident in recent years. The NTSB hopes to put an end to it with
some old-fashioned signage.
In what appears to be one of the largest such deals of its kind in the airline
industry, Boeing and Delta Air Lines last week entered into an Integrated
Materials Management agreement under which Boeing is responsible for the
purchasing, inventory management and logistics for a number of Delta
expendables, initially focused on Boeing parts.
This one found by Vesta -
It was bound to happen one day. On Monday, June 21, the first
non-governmental rocket ship called SpaceShipOne flew to the very edge of
outer space then returned for a safe landing on a desert runway at Mojave
Airport. Civilian test pilot, now turned astronaut, Mike Melvill, brought
the craft down after flying to 100 kilometres (62 miles) in altitude,
leaving the Earth's atmosphere during his history-making sub-orbital space
ride.

. More from netletter 832 with the Alaska cruise by your co-pilot -
Sunday May 23rd
Today we visit College Fjord. In the morning there was low cloud and drizzle
which made for very misty conditions and limited the views. The weather did
clear up in the afternoon, but still very dreary.
We had the gallery tour in the morning before we went on deck where we saw sea
otters, seals and a bald eagle which was perched on an ice floe. Just as we
arrived at the glacier, a huge chunk of ice broke away.
In the afternoon we saw the movie “Somethings got to give” starring Jack
Nicolson.
The evening show was excellent with a ventriloquist performing.
Monday May 24th
We are at Whittier - end of the cruise for most. The town is definitely a one
horse town. Just 290 people live here, all living in the only apartment block.
There is one hotel and another under construction. The rest of the town is
littered with fishing gear and heavy equipment. The only way to get to Whittier
is by sea or through a tunnel shared by trains and vehicles. So, if you drive,
you have to watch the schedule. There are NO car rental agencies here.
We were on a back to back cruise and myself and one other couple had the same
cabins for the return. The other couple with us were told they would remain in
the same cabin and even had a letter telling them so BUT, 20 minutes before
noon, when the new cruisers were expected, our friends were asked to relocate.
Knowing we had from 7:00 to 22:00 to while away here at Whittier, we decided to
take a mini cruise of the surrounding fjords. Just us$99.00 plus $12.00 pp.,
all you can eat dinner. Leaves at 13:30 and returns at 18:00
Although it poured all day, we , with 21 others, were snug in the cabin of the
mini cruiser. The captain took us right up close to the glaciers and, being
almost at sea level, you got a different perspective of the towering mass of
ice. We saw lots of sea otters, a mountain goat, eagles and several bird
colonies of Kittiwicks perched on the cliffs. All in all a day well spent we
thought.
. Back on board by 18:00 for dinner and to put our feet up! After all we had
already seen the Welcome show and did not have to redo the lifeboat drill!
Tuesday May 25th
Weather very overcast and rain showers for the return to College Fjord and no
real views. The cruising in the Alaska Gulf was noisy with the waves crashing
against the hull due to the high swell and wind. Several of the passengers had
that dreaded green tinge about them.
Wednesday May 26th
Into Glacier Bay with not much improvement in the weather. Some humpback whales
and Orca whales spotted at the entrance while picking up the park Rangers.
Each evening there are two shows in different venues and at the same time. On
our return we were able to see the show we had missed on the previous trip.
This evening we saw the comedian.
The sun finally broke through as we were starting our trip to Skagway our next
stop.
Thursday May 27th
Skagway again! Weather was cloudy, windy with a temperature of 54 degrees.
Today we chose to go on a dog sled tour. We boarded a bus which took us to the
other side of Dyea. Skagway, and Dyea, were the two towns created during the
famous gold
Rush days in the 1890’s. Today, there is no sign of Dyea which was a tent city
anyway but it was from here that the famous Chilkoot trail went to Bennett Lake
on the way to the gold fields. The easier, but longer, trail was from Skagway.
We arrived at the dog pound where there were separate kennels for 80 dogs. The
sled, which is pulled by a team of 18 dogs, was on rubber tyred wheels, and we
had a ride in amongst the forest on a rough hewn trail full of rocks. At the
turn point, the handlers explained about each dog, which did not look like the
traditional ‘Husky’ dog depicted by Hollywood, but all were mixtures of various
breed such as greyhound for the speed element. Our lead dog had recently run
1,000 miles in a race. There were 7 puppies loose in the dog pound and we were
allowed to feed them a handful of feed. Naturally, there were lots of photo
opportunities.
Last minute shopping, with coupons of course, collect the charms for the
bracelets and back on board for dinner and the show - oh and the feed bag.
More to come!

. Jana & Bud Husband sent us this -
Low cost airlines!
Open any major newspaper, listen to any financial report, or read any number of
Web sites offering travel advice and you'll be sure to hear about the demise of
the major network air-carriers. For years, travel pundits have proclaimed that
the economy airlines (Southwest, JetBlue, AirTran Airways, Frontier Airlines,
and Independence Air) are the Darwinian equivalent of natural selection.
Well, it is time to call a spade a spade.
Even though the low frills mode of transportation has been glamorized in the
media as the future of travel - not unlike the way they described dot-coms as
the future economy a few years ago - these companies can't deliver the value
proposition.
And value is what travelers are really looking for.
You know, the four Cs: cost, convenience, choice, and comfort. Strict adherence
to low-cost is not as relevant as affordability and lifestyle choice.
The basic assumption of the economic carriers' business model is that people
will accept any level of service as long as it is cheap. That's where the
misunderstanding begins.
Economy carriers do not offer the best way to travel, nor do they offer the
cheapest. Typically, economy carriers over-promise and under-deliver. Maybe
that's why 95 percent of all start-up carriers fail. By far, economic carriers
provide nothing more than the simplest service -treating people like a
commodity.
In fact, some of the services can be down right demeaning. One major European
economy carrier recently announced that future aircraft will not have window
shades or seat pockets. Instead, your seat back will be plastered with
advertising. What's next, coin-operated toilets?
Despite pedestrian service, economy airlines enjoy a mass influx of converts.
Is this tectonic exodus well-deserved - or just a matter of spin?
The truth is, it's spin.
The greatest spin happens when economy carriers are called low-fare airlines.
Referring to them as "low-cost" is duplicitous. Consider a recent sampling of
fares for a round trip flight from Washington, D.C. (Dulles) to Oakland,
Calif., departing June 8th, returning June 10th. "Low-fare" JetBlue offered a
$275 fare, while "high-cost" Delta Air Lines yielded a $219.40 price, which
included a chance for an upgrade.
Here's another example. This past week while planning a trip from Los Angeles
to Philadelphia, I compared fares on Delta Air Lines and Southwest. Delta
offered an upgradeable fare for $304, while Southwest's fare was $408.
And they call Southwest a low-fare airline? Please.
Southwest Airlines and its protégés have chiefly succeeded by cherry-picking
routes and city pairs, flying between airports with the lowest landing fees -
shifting schedules to match passenger demand, operating one type of aircraft
that are cheaper to maintain, and easier to fill. They also have lower
distribution cost (selling tickets direct and on the Internet), and a cheap
labor force.
All of these variables with the exception of labor cost are easily duplicated.
However, they do not always serve the best interest of travel consumers.
By only serving a limited number of markets, economy carriers are selfishly
saying that their customer's needs are not important. They serve limited
markets to save money.
But the reality is that travelers' needs extend beyond one or two destinations.
Fact is, air travelers need access to the world.
Moreover, economy carriers typically operate from secondary airports sometimes
up to 30 miles away from the city centers. In contrast, full service carriers
offer steady global coverage from major airports with seamless connections, and
the ease of transferring to partner airlines within their alliances (Star
Alliance, One World, SkyTeam).
Oh, and one other thing. One size of aircraft does not fit all. Airlines that
only fly one type of aircraft have a fixed capacity. This makes it difficult
for flight schedulers to deal with cancelled or delayed flights. Since all
flights carry the same number of people which are usually full, passengers
whose flights are canceled due to mechanical reasons, or weather, can't be put
on another aircraft - because there is no room.
Having a diverse fleet, allows full-service carriers to increase capacity with
a larger plane when a flight is canceled, providing customers with greater
convenience and comfort.
Air travel is a complex process at best. By focusing their service through the
Internet, limiting the number of customer-contact employees available to serve
customers, the so-called "low-fare" carriers are seeking self-interest at their
customer's expense.
The Internet alone cannot resolve all ticketing issues. With limited customer
contact support, passengers of economy carriers often are forced to navigate
the Byzantine world of ticketing rules on their own. Full-service air carriers
tend to have a higher ratio of full-service employees which might go unnoticed
until there is a weather delay or flight cancellation, than these extra people
can really help.
Why should travelers choose full-service carriers? There are a myriad of
reasons, including cost, comfort, choice, and convenience. It's the ability to
fly anywhere in the world with seamless connections, the choice between
luxurious first class, an comfortable business class or an enjoyable economy
class, while being politely served.
Competitive fares that are sometimes lower than economy carriers, loyalty
programs that are not in danger of going away (despite bankruptcy. United's
MileagePlus program remains solid). There are in-flight meals, a choice of
drinks, a range of entertainment options including movies, television programs,
games and music.
In essence, it's a lifestyle choice.
The big three airlines have been serving customers for 75 years. A formidable
feat, considering they have weathered an economic depression, numerous

A formidable
feat, considering they have weathered an economic depression, numerous
recessions, six wars, political turmoil, and changing consumer preference.
Certainly, newbie economic carriers have room to prove themselves.
Until then, I think I'll stick with my first-class flights, boarding priority,
flying up front at a coach price and the preferred security lines.

I was privileged to be invited to travel on the flight described below and it
was very rewarding to see how much enjoyment the kids had on their special day.
“Dreams Take Flights” news
More kids off to meet Mickey and the gang. For the 15th year, Toronto, the
original chapter of “Dreams Take Flight”, turns wishes into reality. Early in
the morning of 12th May, 255 physically, mentally and socially- challenged
children from Ontario and Buffalo, New York, waved goodbye to their parents,
siblings and volunteers of the Toronto chapter of Dreams Take Flight, and
boarded two Air Canada Boeing 767s bound for Walt Disney World. For many of
these children, it was their first time on a plane or being away from their
families. But the dream of going to Orlando, Florida, to meet Mickey Mouse
and all his friends, and trying out as many rides in a day as possible, kept
the smiles on their faces. Much later that night they returned, happy and
very tired children with memories that will last them a lifetime.
Congratulations to all the volunteers who’ve worked hard all year long to
ensure these children’s dreams turned into reality.

A 13-year-old girl was waiting in the car with her 13-year-old friend while her
aunt ran an errand in the airport office at New York's Penn Yan Airport
recently. The aunt looked out the window and saw that the two girls were
driving the car, and ran outside to try to stop them. The girls apparently
panicked, and crashed into a hangar door, which happened to have a $37 million
jet sitting right behind it. The car got entangled with a wing, and the girls
were trapped. Both suffered minor injuries, but were released after treatment.
The jet damage was estimated at $1 million.

from Tony Coleman: Director Pionairs

I know Jenny and her husband moved to Vancouver Island from Montreal after
she retired. I was thrilled to see her again when I did a presentation at a
Nanaimo Pionairs lunch in the late 1990s (I recall it was just prior to the
Pilots' strike). I lost her contact info, the years rush by, but now I too
am retired and want to renew acquaintance with lost friends.

. Air Canada news.
The first ever non-stop service to link Toronto with Hong Kong - with a
flight time of 15 hours 30 minutes - is due to start on August 1st. Air
Canada will operate the flight with its new Airbus A340-500 aircraft.
At the same time, Air Canada is introducingin-flight amenities in all
cabins. Executive with 42 seats, Hospitality with 225 seats. Executive will
have lie-flat seats with a 63 inch pitch and have adjustable privicy
dividers, stowage area, reading lights and personal large screen monitors.
Hospitality will also be able to enjoy video on individually-controlled
personal monitors. The Hospitality cabin has a 2-4-2 layout with 33 inch pitch.
Employees have been eager to know when our new Airbus A340-500 aircraft,
complete with their state-of-the-art lie-down beds, will be arriving and if
they will get a chance to see one of them first hand. The first aircraft,
FIN 952, will arrive in Montreal from Toulouse on Tuesday, June 29,
complete with a number of employees who were selected to participate in
this inaugural flight. Upon its arrival, there will be an aircraft display
event held from 4:30 – 8 p.m. All active and retired Air Canada and
subsidiary employees are invited to come and see it, and to bring their
family and friends along – you will be required to present a valid Air
Canada identification card. We will have similar display events in Toronto
on July 13, from 5 – 8 p.m., and in Vancouver on July 24, from 2 – 6 p.m.,
so employees at these bases will also get a chance to ‘kick the tires’ of
the newest addition to our fleet. If you feel like trying out one of the
beds for size, this could be your chance.

. Recently, your co-pilot went on yet another cruise -
14 day Alaska cruise on Sun Princess May 17th thru May 31st 2004.
Monday May 17th
For our third & fouth Alaska cruise, our group was 3 couples, we took
friends with us.
One couple live near us, and the other couple reside in Ontario, and drove
out for the cruise and some local sightseeing.
At 9:30 a friend collected us, while another friend gathered the luggage,
and we proceeded to Nanaimo Harbour to board the HarbourLynx catamaran fast
foot ferry to Vancouver Harbour, docking right next to Canada Place where
our cruise for Alaska, the Sun Princess was awaiting us. Cost on the
HarbourLynx is ca$25.00 p.p. one way.
We had to carry our luggage 2 blocks before we got to the cruise check-in
desks. Check-in was simplified as each deck of the ship had their own
identified check-in position, and it was fast and efficient.. We traveled
ticket less, but had a Pier Pickup Document.
Make sure to pickup a free copy of the ‘Destination Alaska’ booklet which
has many pages of coupons for the shops you will encounter at each port
visited. Well worth the effort for some great bargains. This booklet is NOT
available on the ship.
After labeling our luggage, we proceeded through U.S. Immigration and
walked on to the ship, located our cabins, and rushed up to the dining room
for lunch, the gorging begins - yummy!
Back to the cabin to unpack before the inevitable lifeboat drill.
Different from every other drill on other cruises, this time we assembled
in the theatre and no roll call.
After dinner, we took in an excellent show, then a stroll around the
decks viewing the sunset and picking out the lights of towns on Vancouver
Island.
Our friends from Ontario received a complementary bottle of wine and a
coupon for a free photo courtesy of Dargal Interline who had arranged for
our cruise. Naturally, we all shared the wine!
Princess lines allows you to take wine or champagne onboard, unlike other
cruise lines we have been on. We all went well armed with wine, and we even
had a bottle of champagne which your co-pilot had received from Norwegian
Cruise Lines during a previous Alaskan cruise.
Tuesday May 18th,.
The weather today was cloudless with a temperature of 65 degrees, just
right for the day at sea cruising the inner passage.
We listened to a very boring talk about shopping deals in the ports of
call. It seems that most of the jewelry stores mentioned were, in fact,
part of the Princess group. However, there are lots of stores eagerly
awaiting your US dollars. Don’t forget your discount coupons
A talk by the naturalist on board was very interesting and pointed out
some of the wild life which may be seen during the cruise.
After dinner, we saw another excellent show with a comedian/magician.
The movies available were reasonably recent releases ‘Pirates of the
Caribbean’, ‘Somethings got to give’ and ‘Callender Girls’ for example.
Wednesday May 19th.,
Weather today was cloudless, temperature in the mid 70’s.
The cruise ship docked right opposite the city centre, and an easy walk.
After breakfast we disembarked at Ketchikan, armed with a multitude of
discount coupons.
Princess sells bottled water for us$3.00, but, with a discount coupon,
you can get a bottle for us$0.49, a six pack of bottled water for us$2.29,
a golf hat for us$1.49, at another port the same hat for us$0.49, ‘Fruit of
the Loom’ sweat shirts at us$7.99. Bargains, with your discount coupons too
numerous to mention!
Normally, you see tourists with their heads buried in tourist maps - not
these trips - they are buried in discount coupon books!
. The Diamonds International store in Ketchikan gives out a gold plated
bracelet and a charm and a card, which allows you to collect another charm
at the next port. The card is good for the Caribbean too.
Beware, they are quite strict about jay walking, stick to the cross
walks. Offenders are warned by the blowing of a whistle - we know!
We did a leisurely walk around the town, including Creek Street a must.
While we were away, the Regal Princess arrived and docked behind us.
Back on board for lunch and early departure. We watched many float planes
landing next to our ship on their way to the various seaplane terminals. We
pass the Ketchikan International Airport which is well served by Kittyhawk
Airlines and Air Alaska.
No surprise at all the aircraft movements as Ketchikan is only approached
from the sea.
. A B727 was sitting on the ramp as we passed. In an unusual arrangement,
the runway, which is several yards above the ramp, is reached by graduated
slopes at each end.
After the show, we saw some spectacular sunsets and, after sunset, we were
passed by the latest cruise ship on the Princess fleet the Diamond
Princess all lit up it seemed to be floating in mid air.
Thursday May 20th
Today we reach Juneau. Weather still an unbelievable cloudless sky and mid
70’s.
This weather is quite unusual, but has been like this for the past two weeks.
Our ship is docked about 1/2 mile from the city centre, and Princess
offer a shuttle for us$1.00 for an all day pass to the Mount Roberts
tramway, or if you choose to walk, the shuttle is free to return.
We took the tramway to the top of Mount Roberts us$21.95. If you have
not pre-booked always a consideration due to weather conditions, then you
can buy a ticket at a kiosk on dockside operated by Princess and can be
charged to your cabin. Well worth the trip for some spectacular views.
Usual trip around the various stores armed with more coupons, and a visit
to the Douglas Museum.
Back to the ship for lunch and a lazy afternoon.
The Regal Princess and Holland America’s Volendam were also in port, so
the shops were pretty crowded.
Friday May 21st.,
Today we visit Skagway.
Weather still cloudless skies, temperature 75 degrees with no wind.
The shuttle to the end of the pier is free, and the walk into town is only
about 15 minutes
from there. Cost of mini bus to town centre is us$2.00. on the S.M.A.R.T.
bus, pay the driver, the return is free.
On the rock face next to the pier are many paintings done by the various
crews from past inaugural visits very colourful and some very innovative.
One wonders how the painters managed to climb so high.
After visiting the museum, free, next to the Visitors Bureau, and saw the
30 minute film ‘Days of adventure, Dreams of Gold’, we hit the shops again!
Coupons coupons and more coupons!
A free conducted walking tour of 45 minutes can be had from the visitors
bureau.
Back on board for lunch before we take the train trip to the summit.
Princess prebooked cost is $89.00, but we understand that the same trip can
be had for us$35.00, however, you risk the train being fully booked,
especially if there are several cruise ships in port.
The trip is well worthwhile from the scenery alone, especially in the
type of weather we had. There are free bottles of water on the train, the
bottles being in the shape of the railway car. The trip is 3.00 hour round
trip and includes a commentary.
After supper, another spectacular sun set.
We cancelled to automatic tipping at us$10.00 per person per day we
prefer to hand out our own tips.
Saturday May 22nd
Today we visit the Glacier Bay. This is a National Park, and we had to
take on two park Rangers who will provide a commentary. To protect the
environment, only a limited number of cruise ships are allowed to enter the
Bay each day.
Today the weather was cloudy, but was better for photography of the
glaciers as the blue colour of the ice shows better. We stayed about 150
yards from glacier Marjorie and, during the hour we were hove to, we saw 7
different calving ice breaking off the glacier, including one very large
piece. One could hear the ice groaning and cracking all the time. The
glacier is 350 foot tall. The other glaciers we passed were John Hopkins,
Grand Pacific and Lampugh all about 150 foot high.
A soon as the water had settled after a calving, small birds would descend
to the water looking for food. During the cruise in the Bay, we saw four
separate sightings of brown bears, they were on the shores and very easy to
spot. At the entrance to the Bay, we saw several humpback whales.
In the afternoon, the park Rangers gave a slide show which was very
interesting
So more in another NetLetter to come!

In the afternoon, the park Rangers gave a slide show which was very
interesting
So more in another NetLetter to come!

. Need to know.
Some small but important steps to improve on-time performance take place in
Toronto for international flights. In an effort to improve customer service
through on-time departures for internationally bound flights from the Infield
Terminal in Toronto, travellers are asked to be at the gate for boarding 60
minutes prior to departure. Customer boarding passes will show the adjusted
boarding times. Furthermore, anyone connecting through Toronto to international
destinations is asked to go directly to the Infield Terminal by using the
shuttle bus from T1. While waiting for a flight at the Infield Terminal,
travellers will be able to browse the duty-free shops, grab a bite, or chat
comfortably over a coffee.

. Found on the internet.
KLM has offered one of its last 'old' generation or 'classic' Boeing
B747-206B to the Aviodrome museum at Lelystad in Holland - for a price of
euro1.00
The aircraft, registered PH-BUK, is fitted with the stretched upper deck. The
museum can afford to buy the aircraft, but there is a problem - it is
impossible to fly the aircraft into Lelystad due to the short runway, therefore
the jumbo will be dismantled and brought to the museum by ship. This is a
mammoth task expected to cost euro300,000.00
The museum is already the home to the DC2, DC3, DC4, Constellation, Fokker F27
and F50.
From science fiction to reality: Britain to get airport iris scanners. Earlier
last week, the British government announced its plan to begin conducting a test
run of an iris-scanning system at Britain’s five busiest airports next year.
Selected foreign travellers would be invited to sign up for the test, have
their irises scanned and then be able to pass through a dedicated immigration
channel at the airports. Expected to begin by mid-2005 at Heathrow, Gatwick,
Stansted, Manchester and Birmingham airports, the new iris-scanning project is
designed to increase security and speed immigration controls. For now, the
system would remain voluntary. Frankfurt airport, continental Europe’s busiest,
began an iris-scanning trial in February that allows selected EU and Swiss
nationals to bypass conventional passport checks.

city. We were on the Grand Princess about five years ago and stopped at
Livorno. Since we had
been in Florence before, we did not want to take the long trip into that city.
On
the ship there were some travel advisors (separate from the tour desk) who made
the
Lucca suggestion. We found another couple who was interested and found a
cab driver who charged us about $70 for the trip. We first stopped at Pisa,
steps away from the tower, for a few minutes and then proceeded to Lucca. The
drive
through beautiful countryside took about 20 minutes. We were dropped off at
the
town square and arranged to be picked up in about 2 hours. It could not have
been more
perfect!!
Anyway, continue keeping us uptodate on your trips.
Best wishes,

FOREWORD
In the great wilderness of competitive struggle no one is safe; Add to that
politics and government and you have a constant shift of wealth and power.
In 1987, Canada airline leaders thought the time was right for the formation
of a Canadian Computer Reservation System (CRS); a common airline
reservation
system to serve all Canadians. Such a system would include value added
services that were desperately needed by would be CRS subscribers. Canadi>n
and Air Canada thought about building a Canadian CRS; They put their
thoughts
into action when they formed The Gemini Group. cont'd.....
