. Need to know.
Another chance to nominate your travel partner. Employee Travel and
Recognition has provided another window of opportunity – from July 1 - 31, for
active and retired single employees to nominate or change a designated travel
partner, or for active and retired employees to nominate non-dependent children
in the travel profile using the Employee Travel Site. This will be your last
chance this year to update your profile. You’re encouraged to share this
information with your colleagues. Employees and retirees who don’t have access
to a personal computer are encouraged to go to libraries, friends and family or
to an internet café.
Don’t leave booking flights on other airlines to the last minute! While
planning
a spontaneous trip abroad can be exciting, the reality is that your tickets may
not be ready when you are. In most situations, booking OAL flights using the
Employee Travel Site (ETS) is possible. However, there have been instances when
a flight booking on some carriers is not accepted by ETS. Consequently,
employees call the Employee Call Centre, but agents aren’t able to accommodate
them due to the minimum four day processing requirement for phone requests.
Agents try to help their colleagues, but due to staff reductions and the need
to focus on our customers, this is not always possible. Therefore, give
yourself more time to book your trip on an OAL carrier, to ensure that you can
have your tickets when you need them.

"The morning of 29th May dawned bright and sunny. As the hands of the clock
moved slowly to-wards twelve noon, the moment of truth was near - would time
have been kind to us all? Would we recognise each other after, in some cases,
40 years? This was the culmination of many months of detective work by Peter
Baldry and Stephanie Grayson (nee Webber) to organise a reunion for those
people who had worked in the Passenger Office at Heathrow Airport in the
Sixties. The reunion was held at a golf club near to Heathrow.
One or two early birds arrived and were invited to "check in" for a trip down
memory lane. The check in desk, under an old Trans Canada Airlines/Air Canada
sign was manned by Jenny Watts, (on loan, but in her own time, from Air
Canada). Jenny handed out name badges - better to be safe than sorry!
The trickle became a flood and the Club House was soon rocking to shrieks of
laughter as old flames/friends/colleagues swapped stories and reminisced about
"the good old days". Old photographs (mostly black & white) were passed around
to more peals of laughter.
In all some 53 people were traced with 38 attending on the day, travelling from
as far afield as Canada, The States, France, Ireland, Scotland and far flung
places in England. A further nine people were untraceable and probably some
were forgotten despite vigorous efforts to remember everybody.
Heathrow's own newspaper, Skyport came along to record the event and everyone
was sent a copy of the group photograph and write up together with the list of
names and addresses of everyone who attended.
The day was deemed a huge success and the outstanding question is "when will we
meet again"? "

. Musings from Jack and Betty Morgan -
I am not writing exclusively about Air Canada today, although it
is close to the top of our ponderings.
Somebody mentioned a memory book for Terminal 1. Since Jack and
I moved to Toronto in June of 1970 and he made his office in one
of the buildings at the airport while waiting for Terminal 1 to
be completed, it is very much a potent memory for the following
reason:
We moved ahead of the furniture and checked into the Skyline
hotel to wait till the truck arrived at our new home on
Rockcastle Drive. As we were toasting each other, his promotion
to Vice President Southern Region, and all the happy
circumstances involved, we were looking out over western Toronto
and noticed an ambulance go buy....then another and another. As
we counted 11, our eyes lifted to the horizon where we saw a
great pillar of black smoke and then we looked at each other and
said, it must be an aircraft. Sure enough. That was Jack's
first day at work. He went immediately to the office, but there
was not much he could do. The pilot was Doug Hamilton and
pilot engineer set the plane down too hard, driving the wheels up
into the fuel tanks, as we recall. DCVIII.
We also remember the first 747 - (Fat Albert) as it came in and
dropped all those wheels to land. I'll never forget looking up
as it flew so close overhead. An awesome sight.
It is hard to imagine that the Air Canada that Jack and those of
his age group built after the war into the finest airline in the
world has come to such a sad state. It has been very hard to
watch.
We also remember the first 747 - (Fat Albert) as it came in and
dropped all those wheels to land. I'll never forget looking up
as it flew so close overhead. An awesome sight.
However, we were sitting here wondering if it will be possible to
go to the Juno Beach Opening on June 6th. Jack was on the Kenora
which swept mines so the troops could take the LST's and carriers
to Omaha Beach. At the same time, his brother was in the
Canadian Army at Juno Beach, where he was wounded and died 8 days
later. Jim is buried at Beny-sur-Mer and Jack has never had the
opportunity to visit his grave, though we do have pictures of it.
My brother was with 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and as a
Sgt. he led his stick in the drop behind the lines on June 5th.
He too was wounded, but survived to come home with his unit when
the war was over. We have a great deal to thank our brothers for.
There are memories of so many families yet to be told. We were
hoping to go, but with the way things are with the airline, it
doesn't look promising. Sucks to be us, eh?
At least your NetLetter is consistently interesting and
informative, for which we thank you.

into the fuel tanks, as we recall.
At least your NetLetter is consistently interesting and
informative, for which we thank you.

. Must know.
An update on the billing process using the Employee Travel Site (ETS)
All employee travel billing charges are now up-to-date. However, if you’ve
travelled since the launch of the new billing process and still haven’t been
charged for your trips, there is an issue with your payment selected options.
If you have travelled and have not been billed, you’re asked to speak with
Employee Travel and Recognition (ETR) at 1-866-473-4732 to update your travel
billing file. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure valid payment
options are on file prior to commencing new travel.
Credit Card
Credit Card errors are either due to a wrong card number, expired or wrong
expiry dates or the credit was denied. As a result, the full amount you
intended to have debited from your credit card for trips taken, since the
beginning of the new billing process, will default to payroll deduction without
an applicable deduction limit. Therefore, to avoid this inconvenience in the
future, you’re encouraged to call Employee Travel and Recognition with a new or
valid credit card number. Note: If you’re not on the payroll and your credit
card is rejected, the non-payment will result in the deactivation of your
travel profile.
If you have any concerns about your travel charges, you’re asked not contact
your credit card company to discuss the charges. Instead, first verify your
trip information using your travel profile on ETS and if you’ve found an error
contact the ET&R team.
Payroll
There were instances where payroll deduction was requested for various trips,
but complete travel charges could not be deducted through payroll because of
insufficient monies earned OR the employee was not on active payroll at time of
billing. Employees who aren’t on active payroll and who have made their flight
registration with the Call Centre or using Speech Recognition must contact
Employee Travel and Recognition to provide your credit card number to cover the
charges for all travel taken to date.
Note: There is no limit as to the amount that can be deducted on payroll, and
partial deductions will not be considered. Employees who exceed $300 worth of
travel charges per month are urged to use a credit card for payment.
Remember also, you should only use one payment option per trip. You cannot
split your outbound and return using two different forms of payment, nor can
you split the same trip for different travellers, using different booking
references and two different forms of payment. Employees who have booked
travel using two forms of payment will have the round trip deducted entirely
from their credit card. Again, you’re asked to ensure the credit card is valid.
Charge it! Air Canada Jazz employees move to credit card as the only payment
option for travel. Starting July 11, Air Canada Jazz employees and travel
privilege holders must pay for their travel with a valid credit card. The next
time employees use the Employee Travel Site to register, they’re encouraged to
enter their credit card number as the default payment choice. Those who use
Speech Recognition, or call the Employee Call Centre, to book travel must
contact Employee Travel and Recognition at 1 866-473-4732, and provide a valid
credit card number. Employees who don’t provide a valid method of payment
effective after July11, or whose credit card is denied for payment, will have
their travel privileges inactivated until full payment is received.

. Air Canada news -
New cinema snacks now offered on long haul N.A. flights. On May 1, in
addition to regular meal service, we introduced a unique Cinema Snacks Program
on our long haul North American flights (over three hours, 16 minutes). With
this program, we’ve recreated the theatre experience for our customers, with
one exception – the snacks come to them. Following a type trial of the program,
feedback showed our customers welcomed the addition of a convenient, reasonably
priced movie theater style snack during the in-flight film and indicated the
Cinema Snacks program enhanced their overall onboard experience. In addition,
the program is a positive revenue generator. Now, for $6 Cdn, our customers in
hospitality class can select their own cinema combo (two snacks and one Dasani
Mineral Water) from a choice of six premium snack products, then sit back,
relax and enjoy the film.
New life insurance premium rates. Effective June 1, 2003, the premium rates
applicable to the Manulife Supplementary Life Insurance Plan (for all Canadian
and foreign, active and retired employees, except in the U.S.) will be reduced
by 15%. Please note that, as is the case presently, your premium will be
increased by the 9% provincial tax if you live in Quebec, and by the 8%
provincial tax if you are an Ontario resident. A complete list of the new
premium rates can be found on www.achorizons.ca under Online Extra.

- also there will also be a meeting on Wednesday, July 2nd at the Armdale Yacht
Club at 1100 ..normally we take the summer months off but due to the current

charge, what a venue for our Pionairs meetings!!....no decision yet for

. Star Alliance news -
US Air invited to join Star Alliance. On the weekend, Star Alliance
unanimously approved the application of US Airways to join the world's largest
airline alliance, which will significantly expand the alliance's network
throughout the eastern U.S. and the Caribbean. No date has been set for US Air
to join the alliance, but it’s anticipated it will occur in the next 12 months.
The airline has been working closely with both United and Lufthansa, two
founding members of the alliance. US Air has 28,000 employees, a fleet of 279
aircraft and is based in Arlington, Virginia.

Subject: Re: [The NetLetter] Tips on Ireland
I am planning a trip to
Ireland with an also retired friend in September and because neither of us
has enough nerve to drive over there we were figuring on a Trafalgar Tour
but I was wondering if anyone knew of any Irish tour companies that they
would recommend. Any other tips would also be appreciated.
Thanks for any help - Jean

Subject: You know you're a Redneck Pilot when ...
Your cross country flight plan uses flea markets as check points.
Your toothpick keeps poking your mike.
You've thought about just taxiing around the airport drinking beer.
You use a Purina feed sack for a wind sock.
You think VNC charts should show trailer parks.
You constantly confuse Beechcraft with Beechnut.
You think GPS stands for Going Perfectly Straight.
You refer to flying in formation as "We got us a convoy".
You've got a gun rack hanging on the passenger window.
You have more than one roll of duct tape holding your cowling
together.
Your preflight includes removing all the clover, grass, and wheat from
the landing gear.
You siphon gas out of your tractor to put in your airplane.
You've never landed at an actual airport, although you've been flying
for years.
There are parts on your airplane labeled "John Deere".
You have to buzz the strip to chase off all the sheep.
You've landed on the main street of your town for a cup of coffee.
You fly to family reunions to meet girls.
You have fuzzy dice hanging from the magnetic compass.
There are grass stains on your propeller tips.
Just before impact, you're heard saying "Hey, y'all, watch this!"

. Must know.
From the Pionairs email newsletter -
Dear Friends and Fellow Retirees,
In an effort to reach the greatest number of Canada based retirees as possible
(some of whom make their home outside Canada now), we ask those of you on-line
to disseminate the following information to your friends and colleagues who
don’t have a computer.
How to get the latest news on Pensions if you don’t own a computer:
Pionairs is doing its best to keep you informed about your pension. You’ll
receive a letter in your June paycheque envelope from the Pension and Benefits
Committee letting you know what’s being done to defend and preserve our
pensions and benefits and how you can help. Waiting for a letter through the
mail is not necessarily the fastest way to be kept informed, however. There are
two ways that are much faster for you to get the most recent information.
The first is to get an e-mail address and provide it to the Pionairs so they
can send you messages. (Don’t stop reading: You don’t need to own a computer to
receive the e-mails). Even though you don’t own a computer you can still
have an
e-mail address and check your mail whenever you want. Suppliers such as Hotmail
provide e-mail addresses free of charge. Here’s what you do:
To get your own e-mail address:
1.Ask a friend with a computer to go to the hotmail website. To do this you
type in www.hotmail.com
2.When the HOTMAIL page appears click on NEW ACCOUNT STARTUP
3.Fill in the form that will be displayed. You will be asked to choose a name
for your address. It could be your own name. For example,
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. You
will also be asked to choose a password. It should be a word you will easily
remember since you’ll need it each time you check your mail.
4.Don’t forget to give your e-mail address to the Pionairs so they can send you
mail. Go to the Pionairs website www.pionairs.ca Click on "To Join the Pionairs
Email List – Pionairs News" and fill in the form. If you are not already a
Pionair you can join for a small fee of $10 and information that is being
emailed to all Pionairs will now be e-mailed to you too.
Now you’re in business. Once you have your e-mail address you don’t always have
to borrow your friend’s computer. You can go to a library or other public place
such as a coffee shop with computer service (called cyber-cafés which usually
charge a small fee) to pick up your mail and read it. You simply sit down in
front of the computer and type in, for example, www.hotmail.com and then
type in
the password you chose.
If you don’t want to get an e-mail address:
There’s another way of getting the information that Pionairs publishes. Go to
your friend’s or to a public place with computers and type in www.pionairs.ca
This will take you to the Pionairs home page (that’s just the first page of the
Pionairs website). Here you’ll find a title called "Pionairs e-mailList
Newsletter". Under that title click on "Back Issues of the Pionairs News" then
click on the "threads".
Once you do this a few times it will become second nature. You’ve risen to
greater challenges in the past. This one is not as hard as it seems. Your kids
and grandkids will be so impressed!

. Need to know.
Air Canada's overall capacity is being reduced by 17 per cent year over
year for June, July and, on a preliminary basis, August. Asian and
transborder routes are primarily affected with a 60 per cent and 25 per cent
capacity reduction respectively.
Service will be temporarily suspended until Labour Day between the following
cities:
Toronto-Kansas City,
Toronto-New Orleans
Toronto-St. Louis.
Service will be suspended until the summer schedule of 2004 on the following
routes:
Calgary-Chicago;
Montreal-Atlanta;
Montreal-San Francisco;
Toronto-San Diego;
Toronto-Tokyo/ Narita;
Vancouver-Washington/Dulles
Vancouver-Nagoya.
Service to Dayton and Grand Rapids will be suspended indefinitely.
As a result of the reduction in flying, approximately 40 aircraft will be
grounded. The fleet reductions include wide-body and narrow-body aircraft at
the Mainline carrier and some turbo-prop aircraft at Air Canada Jazz.

A walk down memory lane…
In the past months, we have been asking for your thoughts as the end of
operations at Terminal 1 at Toronto Pearson International Airport draw near.
Over the years, hundreds of thousands of people from distant shores have
arrived at Terminal 1, ready to apply to become Canadian citizens or landed
immigrants. Terminal 1 has been called “Canada’s Ellis Island” by many,
referring to the now famous and celebrated US entry point for over 22 million
new immigrants during the period of 1892 to 1924. Through the years, many
immigrants have come to Canada to start new lives, and oftentimes this journey
started in Terminal 1.
Now with this historical landmark set to be torn down upon the opening of the
new terminal, the GTAA is taking efforts to preserve the heritage and stories
of Terminal 1. When the GTAA began asking people about their stories, we
discovered that there are many to tell.
Already, readers have sent us personal anecdotes and poignant moments. But we
want to hear from more of you. Do you have a moment that stands out in your
mind that you would like to share with others? Your stories will be published
in future issues of the GTAA Update, and some will appear in a commemorative
book, now underway.
If you are interested in contributing to this important search or if you know
someone who would be, please contact us. Preserving the history of Terminal 1
is an important step as we continue making Toronto Pearson International
Airport the premier gateway to Canada and to North America. Help us illustrate
this important passageway in Canada’s history.

airlines struggle to stay aloft during the
worst economic downdrafts the industry has

Better Than a Hush-Kit: Wags wonder whether Canadian charter operator Air
Transat plans to capitalize on 'Miracle Flight 236'. That was the Airbus A330
with 304 on board that ran out of fuel midway between Toronto and Lisbon and
glided 20 minutes to a dead-stick landing in the Azores. Some had speculated
that the airline might try advertising: 'Fly the Quietest Airplanes in the
Skies', or 'We're Green! Our Engines Don't Pollute Your Air!' Although some
hailed the pilots as heroes, management blamed them for exacerbating the
problem (apparently caused by an incorrectly replaced fuel line) and ordered
all pilots to take "Remedial Fuel-Management Training."

Dear Friends and Fellow Retirees,
In an effort to reach the greatest number of Canada based retirees as possible

How to get the latest news on Pensions if you don’t own a computer:
Pionairs is doing its best to keep you informed about your pension. You’ll
receive a letter in your June paycheque envelope from the Pension and Benefits

AJC -- Wars, famines, labor strife: The
worse the headlines, the better World

worst economic downdrafts the industry has

. Smilie.
Our Engines Don't Pollute Your Air!' Although some
hailed the pilots as heroes, management blamed them for exacerbating the
problem (apparently caused by an incorrectly replaced fuel line) and ordered
all pilots to take "Remedial Fuel-Management Training."

. News from the districts -
The Vancouver Island & Gulf Island Pionairs held their spring luncheon on May
8th, attended by 110 Pionairs, retirees and spouses. All attendees were handed
a written document briefly explaning the situation vis-a-vis the Air Canada
pensions. After the buffet, Wally Lamond, District Director, introduced the
speaker - Bill Rowe, Chair, Pensions & Benefits Committee.
Bill Rowe spoke for some 30 minutes explaining the situation with the 10
different Canadian basic pension plans. An explanation for the committee which
has been formed from amongst retirees, by the Pionairs, to represent ALL the
retirees and ALL 10 of the basic pension plans was given. A lawyer has been
retained to represent ALL the retirees.
With regard to the reported deficit of $1.4 billion, Bill pointed out that
this is NOT due to any "borrowing" from the fund by Air Canada, as Air Canada
cannot legally remove any funds as the 10 basic pension plans are vested.
Unfortunately, the supplementary pension plans are not vested. The deficit is
due to the value of the bonds and stocks as a result in a slump in the market,
and this deficit could be reduced, somewhat, with a turn around in the market.
Bill explained that, any revision to the rules to the pension plans made by
Air Canada, will only affect the active employees and NOT the retirees as their
plans are vested.
As the Pionairs is a non-profit organization, very little funds are available
to cover the unforseen event of having legal representation during the court
proceedings and, to cover the cost of a lawyer, an appeal is being made to ALL
retirees for a financial donation. The monies from the donation are solely to
cover the legal expenses and NOT for the committee as they have volunteered
their services and offer various areas of expertise. Should there be a surplus
of donated funds, there will be a distribution to the donors, it is, therefore,
incumbent for every donor to include their employee number on all cheques
which should be made out to "Air Canada Pionairs in trust" and sent to
Mr Ed. Storie, 129 Shanley Terrace, Oakville, ON., L6K 2H7.
A suggested guideline of $2.00 per $1,000.00 gross annual pension is not
obligatory.
Bill Rowe answered some 25 written question received from the floor, with
some assistance from Ray Lindsay and Glen Steeves.
It was felt that most of the attendees left the luncheon with a more clear
understanding of the present situation.
In closing, Bill urged those of us with access to the internet and emails to
share the information with those retirees without such access either from the
various email updates being issued by the Pionairs and RAPCAN and by viewing
the web sites of www.achorizons.ca www.travel.aircanada.ca and acfamily.net

From the Vancouver Island and Gulf Island May newsletter -
Report on the 26th Annual General Meeting - Ottawa, April 25 - 27, 2003
Considering the SARS scare, we had a reasonably good attendance from all
Districts.
The business meetings for all Pionairs were well attended. Sue Welchied, V.P.
People, gave us a good run down on the events leading to the CCAA protection
for Air Canada; and answered many questions. At the Sunday banquet, Rob
Gigeure, Executive V.P. Operations was our guest speaker, and was well
received.
Major topic was of course Air Canada under CCAA protection and the possible
effect it may have on our pensions and other benefits. It was noted that the
normal financial support from Air Canada will in all probability not be
forthcoming, as such the following motion was made and passed.
"that the annual fees for Pionairs be increased from $10 to a maximum of $14
(if necessary) effective June, 2004."
In addition, a further motion was moved and passed (because of fluid nature of
events at the CCAA filing)
"that a Pension and Benefits Committee be appointed."
This Committee chaired by Bill Rowe to have the following members:
Board Members: Ed Storrie, Shirley Wood, Savile Hambleton, Glen Steeves,
Charles Bonnyman, Charles Stock, Bill Rowe.
Ex Officio: Fraser O'Shaugnessy, John Rodger, Ken Affleck.
By Invitation: Mary Moore, Ted Page (YUL), Linda Mahger (YUL), Duane Frerichs,
Charles Deacon (YOW), Bruce Aubin (YYZ), Doug Lovat.
CAIL Sub-Committee: Charles Ash (YVR), Bernie Murphy (YVR), Ian Beckett (YVR),
Ernie Watson (YVR) plus Board members Shirley Wood and Charles Bonnyman.
Legal Assistance (Retired A/C Lawyers) Guy Poppe (YYZ) and Remi LaFreniere
(YUL)
It is a large Committee, with meetings being conducted via e-mail and when
necessary by conference calls. The above will give us much needed expertise
from within our own group. As an example the CAIL sub-Committee members are
retired CAIL employees who worked on or with the various CAIL Pension Plans.
Meetings were held with OSFI (office of the Superintendent of Financial
Institutions) who is the Federal watchdog for Federally Registered Pensions.
The 5 or 6 Committee Members who were there were strongly advised that we must
have legal representation at the court hearings to protect our interests.
Unions can only represent active employees. It was also suggested that we
include non-Pionair Retirees in our court representation. We plan to canvass
all Retirees for financial support, and will require Air Canada to assist with
this communication.
Mr. John Varley has been retained as our Legal Counsel whose fees are $350.00
per hour (with $10,000 up front). Mr. Varley comes with very high
recommendations and we are confident we will be well represented.
To cover the above, the following motion was moved and passed:
"That a fund be established and monies held "in trust" to be used for legal and
administrative expenses incurred
during the Air Canada CCAA proceedings, with ALL Retirees asked to subscribe"
Suggested amount of $2.00 per thousand of annual Pension, (or more if desired),
or whatever each person can afford. Cheques to be payable to Air Canada
Pionairs in trust and forwarded to Mr. Ed Storrie - 129 Shanley Terrace,
Oakville, Ontario L6K 2H7. Please ensure that your Employee Number is on the
cheque. A full accounting will be kept and all expenditures recorded and any
funds left will be sent back to the Donor on a pro-rata basis.
Local Activites
Barbecue: Qualicum Beach in late July (Date to be announced)

cheque to Bill Wood, P.O. Box 1879, Ladysmith, B.C., V9G 1B4 DEADLINE July 31st
2003.
Retiree Assistance program:
Just to remind all that this plan is available to all who may need professional
help or guidance. (Financial, marital, alcohol, drug concerns, etc.) Our two
c-ordinators are Shirley Williams in Victoria (250-381-2891) and Lynn McDonagh
in Parksville (250-954-0320).
Shirley and Lynn will not solve your problems but will direct you to the
appropriate professional. In every instance complete confidentiality is
guaranteed.
In concluding, lets look to the future in a positive frame of mind. I am
confident that Air Canada will emerge from the CCAA proceedings in much better
shape and that our pensions and benefits will survive.
Glen Steeves sends this -

. Found on the internet.
On the off chance that the flamboyant owner can turn a profit in the
supersonic market, British Airways (BA) is saying "No, thank you" to Virgin
Atlantic Airways owner Richard Branson's offer to take seven Concordes off its
hands. BA announced last week it was retiring the Concordes by October due to
falling revenue and increasing expenses and planned to turn the aircraft over
to any museum that wanted one. That riled Branson's patriotic sensibilities and
aroused his entrepreneurial spirit. Branson said the aircraft were developed
with a healthy infusion of taxpayers' pounds (and francs) and if need be, he
would appeal to the government to decide their fate

Just to remind all that this plan is available to all who may need professional
help or guidance. (Financial, marital, alcohol, drug concerns, etc.) Our two

in Parksville (250-954-0320).

appropriate professional. In every instance complete confidentiality is
guaranteed.
In concluding, lets look to the future in a positive frame of mind. I am
confident that Air Canada will emerge from the CCAA proceedings in much better
shape and that our pensions and benefits will survive.

A friend of mine was cruising along in his turbo arrow at 18,000 feet one day
when a 737 was called out to him at his 1 o'clock and 15 miles passing to his
