2002 Partner Program Takes Effect Today.
Starting today, all Air Canada and Air Canada Regional active and retired
employees, widow/widowers or spouses must accompany their travel partners on
all Air Canada, Tango, Air Canada Regional and Tier III flights. This
responsibility can’t be transferred to
parents or dependent children. If unaccompanied partners travel
after this date, it will be considered an abuse of the employee’s travel
privileges. In situations where partners have purchased revenue tickets because
they are stranded, costs will not be reimbursed.
Air Canada Regional Employees Now Have Access To SR And ETW.
Also starting today, Air Canada Regional employees can use Speech Recognition
(SR) and the Employee Travel Website (ETW) to register themselves and eligible
family members listed on their CHIP, for standby travel. Employees eligible to
arrange for business travel
can also use these two convenient tools. Regional employees will receive a
letter explaining the SR and ETW tools.

Air Canada News:
14 New Tango Routes Provide Canadians With Low Fare, High Value
Air Service From Coast To Coast.
In response to rapidly growing demand for Tango’s low fare, high value service,
yesterday we announced the addition of nine new destinations and 14 new routes
to its network. Tango’s 2002 summer service will grow to 68 daily departures.
The new routes are as follows: Starting May 1 Kelowna-Toronto,
Winnipeg-Edmonton,
Québec City-Montreal-Winnipeg, Québec City-Toronto and Fredericton-St.
John-Toronto. Starting June 1 Toronto-Abbotsford, Toronto-Calgary-Victoria,
Toronto-Deer Lake, Toronto-Gander, Toronto-Charlottetown and Ottawa-Winnipeg.
In addition, we will add a
fourth daily Tango flight between Montreal-Toronto and a second
daily flight to both Montreal-Halifax and Ottawa-Halifax. Tango’s rapid growth
will include more aircraft. Out current fleet of six A320 aircraft will now
include eight A320s and eight Boeing B737-200s. Tickets on the new routes will
be available for sale starting Feb. 7.

One of Our Longest Service Employee Retires Friday, Feb. 1. After a mere 47
years, 10 months and 10 days, Margaret Hill, Administrative Assistant South
Pacific, has decided to quit the business and move on to other interests.
Margaret joined Canadian Pacific in Sydney, Australia straight out of
secretarial college on April 20, 1954, and has held the same job for her entire
career I wonder how many Managers that adds up to? While the Company has
undergone many changes, Margaret has been a wonderful constant in the lives of
those she works with. It’s hard to imagine, but when she first started, a
flight from Vancouver to Sydney took two and a half days. Congratulations,
Margaret, and best of luck in your future endeavours!

. We thought we would run this story again from Charles Mackie -
This is a tale of one of my experiences while serving as a Flight Radio Officer
on the CGTAS during the 1940s.
It was on one of the first North Star flights that was introduced onto the
Atlantic service, and on this return trip we had to go to London from Prestwick
to pick up some passengers. The aircraft developed a Mechanical and we were
told it take about 8 hours to fix
BOAC very graciously offered us a Driver and a Van to go and explore London ,
which we gladly accepted.
There were seven of us, Capt Dal Woodward, a First Officer, Navigator, Radio
Officer (me) and a Steward as well as two Stewardess. Someone suggested we go
to a town called Staines up the upper Thames River and go hire a boat and go
for a cruise down the upper Thames and on the way there went past Windsor
Castle. The Girls were dropped off at the Castle and wanted to go shopping. One
of the girls was going to get married soon and wanted to buy some Silverware.
We arrived at the boathouse and discovered that their boats would only carry
three persons in each boat
so we had to hire two boats to accomodate us. Dal Woodward, myself and the
Steward where in one and the First Officer and Navigator in the other.
We started downstream rather slowly because the engines had a plug in the
intake of the carburator, which restricted the speed. Dal looked around and
found some Paddles in the boat and we started to paddle to speed up the boat.
The other two in the other boat soon caught on and did the same thing. Dal says
to me get closer and we would splash them with our paddles. Well that started a
real war and we all soaking wet before long. Dal said to me , as I was steering
the boat, to force their boat towards shore so they would become sitting ducks
for us to splash them. I started to push their boat toward and we were not
looking where we were going, and the other boat ran into a solid rock pier ,
about 6 foot tall, and stalled their boat. A little old lady came running down
waving her hands and screaming at the top of her lungs, complaining we had
damaged her pier, no concern if anyone was hurt, yelling she was going to call
the "River Police" The two chaps in the other boat apologized the best they
could ,finally got their boat started and backed away from the pier.
We continued downstream and came to two islands in the river and there was a
Punt load of School Girls, all in Uniform sitting in this punt. The two crew
members in the other boat went close to them and shouted "Hello" but there was
no response from the girls.
Continuing down stream the t wo in the other boat decided they would go for a
swim, so they stripped down to their underwear, and took turns at diving into
the water. Dal says to me get close to their boat so he could grab the Tow rope
and once both guys where in the water at one time tow the boat away,leaving
them stranded in the middle of the river yelling and shouting to get their boat
back. Apparently we where in the area of a PublicPark because the people on the
shore started yelling and shouting , that we spoiling the tranquility of their
river and more cries went up to call the "River Police" We let the two get into
their boat and started the return trip.
We then challenged the two guys to a race and we purposedly held back to let
them go ahead as we could see what would happen when got back to where the
girls where. Sure enough they peeled off and went to pass the girls between the
two islands and they ran aground right beside the punt load of girls, The guys
got out of their boat in their underwear and pushed their boat free, this
finally got the Girls laughing and clapping their hands
We proceeded along further and there was a Barge tied up to the river bank and
and the two others decided they where going to dry out their uniforms. , and
one of them hung his trousers over the windscreen
of the boat , so again Dal says to go past and he would grab the trousers. He
grabbed them alright but the First Officer also saw the trousers go and he
grabbed the other leg of the trousers and the result was the pants tore in two
, and held together by the belt and buckle.
We arrived back at the boathouse, paid the chap and got out of there before he
discovered what a mess we had left behind in his boats.
We picked up the Stewardesses at Windsor and fortunately one of the girls had a
needle and some thread and managed to baste up the trousers!
We arrived back at the airport just as they had finished repairing the problem,
so we sneaked back onto the aircraft before any passengers where boarded, and
shut the door between the Cabin and Flight Deck,.as we where a pretty sorry
sight and the passengers were none the wiser.
Looking back on the incident it was one of the more times we had while on the
North Atlantic service.
If anyone knows who the rest of the crew where , would they please let me know
as my memory isnt that good.

Did TCA or AC ever name their aircraft as CPA did
with their famous "Empress of.." if they did, when and what was the name,
this doesn't apply to Air BC or the name "Flying Merchant" carried on the
four North Stars freighters.

Further to Herb Noble's trivia question, I go back to early June '53 with
TCA (in the Public Relations Dept.) and I can not recall the airline ever
naming any of its aircraft as CPA was wont to do. I do remember that the
subject was indeed suggested and considered more than once but our Crown
Corporate nature was such that there was concern Ottawa would stick its nose
into that aspect of our business (too). We would only upset those
cities/provinces etc. that were not named.

believe called "the cornwalis"..Ed Hill

wow, that's great, the first four M2's were named and that only lasted for a
year or so, none of the 6 M1's on lone from the airforce were named, the
names were (201) Cartier, (202) Cornwalis, (203)Chaplain, (204) Selkirk
I was interviewed by TCA for the
job two weeks after 204 went missing, and started Feb 9 57 after being
married on Feb 2 57.. by the time I got to work on them
(Feb 57) they were beat into shape and were performing much better that the
first few years, I used to bug Ken Ford the Rolls Royce Rep who had an
office in our hangar for the stories about the early going.

British airlines may soon be flying stone-cold sober. An alarming
increase in air-rage incidents has prompted the UK government to
consider a ban on all alcoholic beverages aboard commercial aircraft.
Air-rage incidents increased from 800 three years ago to 1,250 in 2001.

Ed Tierney has sent us this information on Ryanair an Irish low discount
airline-
Ryanair jet order to create 3200 jobs.
Low-cost airline Ryanair will create 3200 jobs through a £6.5bn order for new
planes the company has said.
The airline has ordered 100 of Boeings new 737- 800s with an option to order a
further 50.
The first of the planes will be delivered this year, with the remainder
following until 2010.
Some 800 pilots, 2,000 cabin crew and 400 engineers and operations staff are
expected to be needed.

We used to have a little travel book listing hotels all around the world who
gave discounts to Air Canada/airline personnel but the only booklet we can find
is one that was issued for the 1988/1989 period (28th edition) and this of
course is hopelessly out of date.
Carol & Bryan Humphrey plan a visit to Montreal in June to attend their
daughter's commencement ceremonies at McGill University and would appreciate
knowing what hotels give a "good" discount.

In NetLetter 654, Herb Noble posed this question -
Did TCA or AC ever name their aircraft as CPA did
with their famous "Empress of.." if they did, when and what was the name,
this doesn't apply to Air BC or the name "Flying Merchant" carried on the
four North Stars freighters.
Norm Garwood responded -
Further to Herb Noble's trivia question, I go back to early June '53 with
TCA (in the Public Relations Dept.) and I can not recall the airline ever
naming any of its aircraft as CPA was wont to do. I do remember that the
subject was indeed suggested and considered more than once but our Crown
Corporate nature was such that there was concern Ottawa would stick its nose
into that aspect of our business (too). We would only upset those
cities/provinces etc. that were not named.

wow, that's great, the first four M2's were named and that only lasted for a
year or so, none of the 6 M1's on lone from the airforce were named, the
names were (201) Cartier, (202) Cornwalis, (203)Chaplain, (204) Selkirk
I was interviewed by TCA for the
job two weeks after 204 went missing, and started Feb 9 57 after being
married on Feb 2 57.. by the time I got to work on them
(Feb 57) they were beat into shape and were performing much better that the
first few years, I used to bug Ken Ford the Rolls Royce Rep who had an
office in our hangar for the stories about the early going.

British airlines may soon be flying stone-cold sober. An alarming
increase in air-rage incidents has prompted the UK government to
consider a ban on all alcoholic beverages aboard commercial aircraft.

Ed Tierney has sent us this information on Ryanair an Irish low discount
airline-
Ryanair jet order to create 3200 jobs.
Low-cost airline Ryanair will create 3200 jobs through a £6.5bn order for new
planes the company has said.
The airline has ordered 100 of Boeings new 737- 800s with an option to order a
further 50.
The first of the planes will be delivered this year, with the remainder
following until 2010.
Some 800 pilots, 2,000 cabin crew and 400 engineers and operations staff are
expected to be needed.

gave discounts to Air Canada/airline personnel but the only booklet we can find
is one that was issued for the 1988/1989 period (28th edition) and this of
course is hopelessly out of date.

Simplifying The Future Of Employee Travel.
The Employee Travel and Recognition team is working on a proposal
to automate and improve the process of standby travel for
employees and retirees. This automation will allow the Company to consider the
reintroduction of limited unaccompanied partner
travel such as non-dependent children and designated partners.
If all the features, and their associated costs and benefits, are approved by
Executive Management, the project will be implemented this year. Some of the
changes will include ticketless travel and
new payment options, such as using credit and debit cards in
addition to payroll deduction. A new billing method will allow
pass holders to view their travel charges on the web. An improved travel
profile will replace the current CHIP, and allow employees
and retirees to verify and update family data, boarding priorities and pass
entitlements online.

Bruce Allcom sends this information -
This statement in a recent netletter, finally got my ire up. "Flying Merchant",
all you could get in them was a load of day old chicks and they could fly
themselves.
I spent 9 years with TCA as an F/O Transat on Northstars and Connies
subsequently Capt. Northstars domestic before becoming Chief Pilot for Flying
Enterprise in Denmark (a subsidiary of Overseas Aviation Gatwick at the time,
the largest 4 engine charter airline in the world)
Just to set the record straight: The Canadian Government did not like CPAir any
more than they liked CPRail for beating them to the punch as a transcontinental
railroad and continued their tunnel vision attitude with Prime Ministerial
statements such as "Give CP the Pacific to loose their shirts on there is no
revenue in that"
When CPair sought a transcontinental route "Freight Only" with Douglas DC
Freighters (12 foot cargo doors and 300000 lb. cargo) there was no such
service. Mr. Nobles illustrious TCA bought 3 Bristol 170 freighters from
Channel Airbridge, designed to carry two morris minor autos 21 miles across the
English Channel, as the governments answer to CPair's Douglas DC6
intercontinental freighters. This quashed any hope free enterprise.
To further my point about NorthStars (DC4 m2/m3) the B.O.A.C. version which I
have on my license as a C-4 had reverse. The era Mr. Noble refers to, Canadian
MOT would not consider reverse as a performance factor and neither did they
consider departure profile only consider V1,V2 stop start distance, although
the Brits had this calculated for several years and used it for certification
of the Argonaut.
The final agony and I suppose emphasizing the arrogance of TCA and the
Northstar was the "Cross-Over" Exhaust system designed and installed on what
was a basically a good aircraft. It destroyed it, looked good -- nice smooth
cowls -- quieter interior, all good stuff except it dramatically reduced the
GTOW and cruise airspeed. The Brits (B.O.A.C.) did a simillar mod but far
morsimilarent.
This came home to me while flying between Copenhagen and Palma de Majorca one
night in an Argonaut (with reverse and slim cowlings) and coincidentally passed
an opposite direction ex TCA Northstar and the Capt. asked me as an former TCA
pilot what was wrong with his airplane?? Discussing Canadian politics on center
frequency was not the answer.
Mr. Noble I suggest you take the feather out of where it is tickling you and
give credit where it belongs. CPAir did one hell of a job pioneering the
Pacific the hard way around the Pacific, and developed routes and trade, Ottawa
and Quebec never dreamed of
I used to be very proud of my background as a TCA pilot and I still am unless I
run into ill informed and sadly uneducated experts spouting off with all the
expertise of a CNN reporter.

*** Battle joined to save aviation sheds
The Guardian -- The fight is on to save a collection of
scruffy industrial sheds on a Hampshire building site
which, according to campaigners, constitute a history
of aeronautical research unique in the world. The sheds
at Farnborough are stuffed with icons of British aviation
history. The most spectacular is the 24ft wind tunnel
built in 1935 so that an entire small plane could be
dangled from a crane in front of the giant mahogany
blades, in gale force winds which have also been used to
test roofing materials and trees. There are also two
other wind tunnels.
*** BA issues handcuff amnesty for Kinky Staff
Ananova -- British Airways has announced a handcuff
amnesty for staff after 255 pairs of cuffs went missing.
A spokeswoman told Ananova 17 pairs had been used to
restrain unruly passengers, but the other pairs were
missing. She said staff would not be punished in any way
if they return any company handcuffs they may have. A
memo in Cabin Crew News suggested either a large number
of cuffs were used in restraint, or BA employed a lot of
fetishists. The memo in the internal magazine, written by
Simon Packer, head of BA's safety and evacuation systems
said: "Your exotic practices in the bedroom are your own
business, but please stick to the Ann Summers furry
handcuffs. Replacing the ones from the restraint kit is
costing BA a fortune."

Flushed with anger, US woman in plane toilet ordeal
OSLO, Jan 21 - An American woman had no need to fasten her seatbelt on a
flight from Scandinavia to the United States after a high-pressure vacuum
flush sealed her to the toilet seat of the transatlantic airliner.
The woman filed a complaint with Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) after
her ordeal on a Boeing 767 flight last year. She got sucked in after
pushing the flush button while seated, activating a system to clean the
toilet by vacuum, the airline said on Monday.
"She could not get up by herself and had to sit on the toilet until the
flight had landed so that ground technicians could help her get loose," a
SAS spokeswoman told Reuters. "She was stuck there for quite a long time."

This came home to me while flying between Copenhagen and Palma de Majorca one
night in an Argonaut (with reverse and slim cowlings) and coincidentally passed
an opposite direction ex TCA Northstar and the Capt. asked me as an former TCA
pilot what was wrong with his airplane?? Discussing Canadian politics on center
frequency was not the answer.
Mr. Noble I suggest you take the feather out of where it is tickling you and
give credit where it belongs. CPAir did one hell of a job pioneering the
Pacific the hard way around the Pacific, and developed routes and trade, Ottawa
and Quebec never dreamed of
I used to be very proud of my background as a TCA pilot and I still am unless I
run into ill informed and sadly uneducated experts spouting off with all the
expertise of a CNN reporter.

Further to Herb Noble's trivia question, I go back to early June '53 with
TCA (in the Public Relations Dept.) and I can not recall the airline ever
naming any of its aircraft as CPA was wont to do. I do remember that the
subject was indeed suggested and considered more than once but our Crown
Corporate nature was such that there was concern Ottawa would stick its nose
into that aspect of our business (too). We would only upset those
cities/provinces etc. that were not named.

*** Battle joined to save aviation sheds
The Guardian -- The fight is on to save a collection of
scruffy industrial sheds on a Hampshire building site
which, according to campaigners, constitute a history
of aeronautical research unique in the world. The sheds
at Farnborough are stuffed with icons of British aviation
history. The most spectacular is the 24ft wind tunnel
built in 1935 so that an entire small plane could be
dangled from a crane in front of the giant mahogany
blades, in gale force winds which have also been used to
test roofing materials and trees. There are also two
other wind tunnels.
*** BA issues handcuff amnesty for Kinky Staff
Ananova -- British Airways has announced a handcuff
amnesty for staff after 255 pairs of cuffs went missing.
A spokeswoman told Ananova 17 pairs had been used to
restrain unruly passengers, but the other pairs were
missing. She said staff would not be punished in any way
if they return any company handcuffs they may have. A
memo in Cabin Crew News suggested either a large number
of cuffs were used in restraint, or BA employed a lot of
fetishists. The memo in the internal magazine, written by
Simon Packer, head of BA's safety and evacuation systems
said: "Your exotic practices in the bedroom are your own
business, but please stick to the Ann Summers furry
handcuffs. Replacing the ones from the restraint kit is
costing BA a fortune."

Flushed with anger, US woman in plane toilet ordeal
OSLO, Jan 21 - An American woman had no need to fasten her seatbelt on a
flight from Scandinavia to the United States after a high-pressure vacuum
flush sealed her to the toilet seat of the transatlantic airliner.
The woman filed a complaint with Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) after
her ordeal on a Boeing 767 flight last year. She got sucked in after
pushing the flush button while seated, activating a system to clean the
toilet by vacuum, the airline said on Monday.
"She could not get up by herself and had to sit on the toilet until the
flight had landed so that ground technicians could help her get loose," a
SAS spokeswoman told Reuters. "She was stuck there for quite a long time."

Minimum stay:
Inbound travel may not commence prior to 00:01h on the first
Saturday -or- on the first Sunday following the day of
departure. (i.e. passenger must spend at least one Friday or one
Saturday night over at the destination.)
Maximum stay
60 days / 30 days to/from Florida, Hawaii, Carribean, Las Vegas
Extension for medical purposes NOT permitted.
Connection vs Stopover
Family Affair bookings follow the same connection guidelines
as all Air Canada published fares. domestic/transborder--4 hours
and international--24hours.
Penalties
Changes:
Permitted within one year from date of issue for a fee of
CA75.00 (CA$75.00 converted to US$, if change made in the USA)
origin/destination/point of turnaround must remain the same.
Any difference in fare will be collected if the fare has changed between the
time of original flight and the new flight.
Cancellations:
Non refundable (including in case of illness).
Surcharges
Family Affair is subject to a CA$5.00 one way fuel
surcharge/CA$10.00 return
Application of unused Family Affair ticket:
Unused Family Affair tickets are valid for one year from date of issue
the value of an unused Family Affair ticket may be used towards the
purchase of a published fare provided that compensation fee
and any other fees are collected.
Please note that an unused published fare ticket cannot be used towards the
purchase of a Family Affair ticket

purchase of another Family Affair ticket when there is a change

Same day stand-by
Domestic Canada: not permitted

Children/Infants/UM**

One infant may travel with each adult 12 years or over.

Schedule change
Family Affair tickets are considered as normal revenue tickets in
terms of schedule change. the standard sked change guidelines

IROP
In an irregular operation situation, Fmily Affair passengers are considered as
normal revenue. Passenger protection is offered.
Denied boarding
Family Affair tickets are considered as normal revenue tickets in
terms of denied boarding. the standard corporate policy
applies on this matter.
Downgrades
Not permitted.
Family Affair ticket holders cannot downgrade to Family Affair sell offs.
Seating - advance seat selection
Not permitted.
AEROPLAN
AEROPLAN mileage -may not- be accumulated on Family Affair tickets.
Lost/stolen ticket
Standard procedures apply
Validation form/identification
Travellers other than Air Canada employees must carry a validation
form certifying that they are eligible family members.
Forms are available from your personnel office, City Sales Office or Airport
Ticket Office.
Fax and photocopies are acceptable in case of emergency only, for
outbound portion. however, the actual form will be required upon inbound.
A validation form may be used for one travel and a new one filled for each
travel.
An unused form validated with the employee/retiree travel card is valid for
one year after the date of issue.
Check-in agents will ask passengers to show company id or Family Affair
validation form and will lift the coupon from that validation form. Failing to
present those will result in denied boarding.
It is mandatory that passengers have the PM002 validation form available for
presentation upon request from an Air Canada agent at any time during their
trip. However, the form is not required for ticket issue.
Infants do require a validation form.

. Information for our USA retirees -
Lori Flowers sent us this message -
Just recently, I had a retiree in Canada give me a copy of her "taxable
benefits & allowances"-Fed: statement detailing pass charges. To my
amazement, each pass (be it to the retiree or partner or family member)
charge was broken down with the following information:
Process Date, Ticket Date, Ticket Number,Amount, Description, and Travel
Description. This of course seems to be the way deductions should legally
be noted.
We here in the US have been desperately attempting to have this information
given to us. Pass deductions as you may or not know, are only identified
by "Ac Transp Emp & Prtnr Transp" with all taxes lumped together. This
makes it impossible to figure out which taxes belong to whom. Furthermore,
no ticket numbers or other pertinent info is given. We are repeatedly told
to keep ticket numbers for id/mistake purposes, but how can we readily
identify errors if this necessary information is not properly given.
PLEASE---can you assist us in rectifying this situation. In the age of
computer technology, there certainly is no excuse for not being provided
with this info.
This is the answer we have received -
The pay stub for employees in Canada is produced by Peoplesoft. It was
developed
to include all pertinent pass charge information.
In the US, our pay checks and pay stubs are produced by ADP. The program used
by
ADP to produce those checks and stubs does not provide for space to accommodate
all the relevant pass charge information. Because ADP is a third party Company,
unless they change their program to allow for printing of this information,
there is nothing we can do to have this printed on checks/stubs. It is not
expected that ADP will change their program to accommodate our need.
We are currently looking at other options and will advise if and when something
becomes available.
In the meantime, we advise employees/retirees to simply keep track of their
travels and check them off as they are deducted. In cases where charges are in
error, they can simply contact us in People Services and we will verify.

In reading NL 654, I was reminded that since an earlier NL where Keith Rhodes
was wondering about a leased DC9 during Expo year I've been racking my brains
(or what's left of them) to try to remember the airline involved. I see that
Fred Spriggs' memory is better than mine to remember Trans Caribbean. As I
recall this was a dry lease with the crew uniforms in black and I do well
remember flying on it. I was in Chicago trying to get back to Montreal and
despite my POS pass, it was late evening and I was in the Maple Leaf lounge -
if that's what it was called then - when two men and a woman were ushered in. I
didn't pay much attention the guys, my eyes were glued to the gal. She was the
rather stunning Black actress from the original Star Trek and we all sat
chatting until boarding the leased DC9. I may not have remembered the leasing
airline, but I sure remembered her. Cheers - Tom Martin

The wet leased DC9 in 1967 operated YUL/JFK return was painted Trans Caribbean
colours and either owned or dry leased by them.
Another airline, I believe it was OverSeas National Airlines, dry leased the
aircraft from Trans Caribbean, and Overseas National wet leased the aircraft to
Air Canada.

Tickets must be issued within 3 days after making reservation but no later than

card acceptance. There will be no free ticket delivery (FTD)
except where there is no ETKT available.
Note: photo ID picture is required when checking in for the flight with ETKT.
City Sales Office (cso) may issue ticket ( cash/cheque/mco/credit card)
until the day before departure.
Airports Ticketing Office may issue ticket until the day before
departure, at the following conditions:
-reservations are made 3 days or less before departure.
-and-
-there is no City Sales Office in the passenger district.
-and-
-passenger respects off peak or employee/retiree ticketing hours.
Prepaids (PTA):
PTA's are permitted subject to regular service charge
Compassionate travel:
In the event of compassionate travel, the Family Affair program
does -NOT- apply.
Min/Max stay.
Minimum stay:
Inbound travel may not commence prior to 00:01h on the first
Saturday -or- on the first Sunday following the day of
departure. (i.e. passenger must spend at least one Friday or one
Saturday night over at the destination.)
Maximum stay
60 days / 30 days to/from Florida, Hawaii, Carribean, Las Vegas
Extension for medical purposes NOT permitted.
Connection vs Stopover
Family Affair bookings follow the same connection guidelines
as all Air Canada published fares. domestic/transborder--4 hours
and international--24hours.
Penalties
Changes:
Permitted within one year from date of issue for a fee of
CA75.00 (CA$75.00 converted to US$, if change made in the USA)
origin/destination/point of turnaround must remain the same.
Any difference in fare will be collected if the fare has changed between the
time of original flight and the new flight.
Cancellations:
Non refundable (including in case of illness).
Surcharges
Family Affair is subject to a CA$5.00 one way fuel
surcharge/CA$10.00 return
Application of unused Family Affair ticket:
Unused Family Affair tickets are valid for one year from date of issue
the value of an unused Family Affair ticket may be used towards the
purchase of a published fare provided that compensation fee
and any other fees are collected.
Please note that an unused published fare ticket cannot be used towards the
purchase of a Family Affair ticket
** an unused Family Affair ticket cannot be used towards the
purchase of another Family Affair ticket when there is a change
in routing **.
Same day stand-by
Domestic Canada: not permitted
Transborder: permitted as per regulations.
Children/Infants/UM**
Children 2 yrs old and over: charge the applicable adult fare
(Family Affair rate)
Infants under 2 yrs of age: free if not occupying a seat.
One infant may travel with each adult 12 years or over.
International travel: infants travelling free of charge need a ticket.
Schedule change
Family Affair tickets are considered as normal revenue tickets in
terms of schedule change. the standard sked change guidelines
apply.
IROP
In an irregular operation situation, Fmily Affair passengers are considered as
normal revenue. Passenger protection is offered.
Denied boarding
Family Affair tickets are considered as normal revenue tickets in
terms of denied boarding. the standard corporate policy
applies on this matter.
Downgrades
Not permitted.
Family Affair ticket holders cannot downgrade to Family Affair sell offs.
Seating - advance seat selection
Not permitted.
AEROPLAN
AEROPLAN mileage -may not- be accumulated on Family Affair tickets.
Lost/stolen ticket
Standard procedures apply
Validation form/identification
Travellers other than Air Canada employees must carry a validation
form certifying that they are eligible family members.
Forms are available from your personnel office, City Sales Office or Airport
Ticket Office.
Fax and photocopies are acceptable in case of emergency only, for
outbound portion. however, the actual form will be required upon inbound.
A validation form may be used for one travel and a new one filled for each
travel.
An unused form validated with the employee/retiree travel card is valid for
one year after the date of issue.
Check-in agents will ask passengers to show company id or Family Affair
validation form and will lift the coupon from that validation form. Failing to
present those will result in denied boarding.
It is mandatory that passengers have the PM002 validation form available for
presentation upon request from an Air Canada agent at any time during their
trip. However, the form is not required for ticket issue.
Infants do require a validation form.

. Information for our USA retirees -
Lori Flowers sent us this message -
Just recently, I had a retiree in Canada give me a copy of her "taxable
benefits & allowances"-Fed: statement detailing pass charges. To my
amazement, each pass (be it to the retiree or partner or family member)
charge was broken down with the following information:
Process Date, Ticket Date, Ticket Number,Amount, Description, and Travel
Description. This of course seems to be the way deductions should legally
be noted.
We here in the US have been desperately attempting to have this information
given to us. Pass deductions as you may or not know, are only identified
by "Ac Transp Emp & Prtnr Transp" with all taxes lumped together. This
makes it impossible to figure out which taxes belong to whom. Furthermore,
no ticket numbers or other pertinent info is given. We are repeatedly told
to keep ticket numbers for id/mistake purposes, but how can we readily
identify errors if this necessary information is not properly given.
PLEASE---can you assist us in rectifying this situation. In the age of
computer technology, there certainly is no excuse for not being provided
with this info.
This is the answer we have received -
The pay stub for employees in Canada is produced by Peoplesoft. It was
developed
to include all pertinent pass charge information.
In the US, our pay checks and pay stubs are produced by ADP. The program used
by
ADP to produce those checks and stubs does not provide for space to accommodate
all the relevant pass charge information. Because ADP is a third party Company,
unless they change their program to allow for printing of this information,
there is nothing we can do to have this printed on checks/stubs. It is not
expected that ADP will change their program to accommodate our need.
We are currently looking at other options and will advise if and when something
becomes available.
In the meantime, we advise employees/retirees to simply keep track of their
travels and check them off as they are deducted. In cases where charges are in
error, they can simply contact us in People Services and we will verify.

In reading NL 654, I was reminded that since an earlier NL where Keith Rhodes
was wondering about a leased DC9 during Expo year I've been racking my brains
(or what's left of them) to try to remember the airline involved. I see that
Fred Spriggs' memory is better than mine to remember Trans Caribbean. As I
recall this was a dry lease with the crew uniforms in black and I do well
remember flying on it. I was in Chicago trying to get back to Montreal and
despite my POS pass, it was late evening and I was in the Maple Leaf lounge -
if that's what it was called then - when two men and a woman were ushered in. I
didn't pay much attention the guys, my eyes were glued to the gal. She was the
rather stunning Black actress from the original Star Trek and we all sat
chatting until boarding the leased DC9. I may not have remembered the leasing
airline, but I sure remembered her. Cheers - Tom Martin

The wet leased DC9 in 1967 operated YUL/JFK return was painted Trans Caribbean
colours and either owned or dry leased by them.
Another airline, I believe it was OverSeas National Airlines, dry leased the
aircraft from Trans Caribbean, and Overseas National wet leased the aircraft to
Air Canada.

DC-9 Nose gear.
Pete Peterson and I brought a flight into Vancouver and after carrying out
the various checks and procedures, landed with an unsafe (red lights) nose
gear. Maintenance took the aircraft over to the hangar and crew sched
called and asked us to remain in Vancouver until it was repaired and then
fly it back to Winnipeg on the morning flight. Pete was put up in a hotel
and I stayed at my own home, being a commuter at that time.
The problem eventually was determined to be in the nose gear wiring harness
and the trouble shooting and then repairs took two days. Great, I got to
spend two nights at home.
We returned to the field early the second morning and were in the office
flight planning when the dispatcher asked us if we were ready to do the
nose gear taxi check. "Taxi check?" We were told nothing about that! Now we
had to scramble if we hoped to salvage an on schedule departure. "Where is
the aircraft?" "At the hangar, there is a car waiting to take you there"
I hate that kind of an unplanned rush but here we now were on the flight
deck of a cold aeroplane trying to squeeze 45 minutes of chores into the
remaining 30 minutes before departure time. I said to Pete that we would do
a superficial cockpit check, use the checklists for start up, after start
and taxi to ensure we had brakes, hydraulics and so on and then do the
complete check at the ramp later while the passengers were being boarded.
We called dispatch and asked what type of gear check was required. They had
no idea so as we approached runway 08/26's "centre" taxi we asked the tower
for clearance to taxi on to the runway, continue to the 08 button and then
run a high-speed taxi back. They approved the request; we fast taxied and
were now in position and about to power up back to the turn off. I said to
the F/O "let's take advantage of the situation and carry out a rejected
take off procedure just below V1 speed.
We quickly reviewed the procedure, advanced the throttles to T/O power and
the near empty aircraft rapidly accelerated. At about 5 knots below V1 the
nose of the DC-9 suddenly reared up like a bronco out of the chute, I
pushed full forward on the control wheel until I hit the full travel stops
to no avail, shouted "reject, buckets" and applied brakes, hard. The nose
wheel came down to the runway with a heck of a smack (take that) and we
came to a rapid stop. I expected the tower to comment on the thoroughness
of the nose gear check we had done, but they didn't and we didn't.
We taxied clear of the runway, our eyes like saucers, did a quick check for
an explanation of the incident and found our answer. Someone had set the
horizontal stabilizer full nose up and we missed it during our abbreviated
check.. We taxied in to the terminal parking, picked up our passengers
while completing a THOROUGH cockpit check, departed on sched or very close
and logged "nose gear checks OK"(you bet). Bernie

Air Canada News:
New U.S. Security Measures Begin Tomorrow.
Effective January 18, the United States Aviation & Transportation Security Act
and U.S. Customs require that, in advance of the aircraft landing in the United
States, all carriers provide U.S. Customs with basic personal information about
passengers and crew members. These new regulations require that the Advanced
Passenger Information System (APIS) be sent via electronic transmission and
consists of five basic pieces of data; full legal name, gender, date of birth,
nationality and travel document number. A valid passport is the preferred
document. This rule applies to all persons on board the aircraft.
Air Canada To Launch Daily Non-Stop Service To Ireland.
On June 1, we will begin daily service between Toronto and Dublin.
It will be the only daily non-stop service between Canada and the Emerald Isle
during the high-demand summer travel season June through October, using
Boeing 767 aircraft.

Re the info from Employee Travel & Recognition on availability of a trip
pass printer at Montreal HQ 24/7.
I tried this two weeks ago Sunday. Security at HQ knew nothing about it.
I then went to the main security office, and again they knew nothing. As
retirees we must get a visitor pass from security to access the
building. I think the description of the location is a bit vague. Could
we perhaps have a notice posted at the entrance with clear directions.

flew RCAF DC-4M North Star from Vancouver to Halifax in 8 hrs 32 mins, at
an average speed of 329 mph for 2785 miles.

Farewell to DC9 - 32
Just read in today's Daily News the last flight of AC DC9 - 32. This was my
favourite aircraft while I worked at Air Canada. I started in Engineering in
1968 assigned to look after the Wheels and Brakes and also the Landing Gear.
>From there I progressed to DC9 Airframe and Flight Controls, then Project
Manager for APUs and Accessories and then Maintenance Superintendent DC9 Fleet,
responsible for entire 42 A/C plus New York Air and other contracts. I was Supt
DC9 for 5 years during the early 80s when DC9 fleet was backbone of AC domestic
service. We all the remember the Cincinnati DC9 accident and the ensuing Public
Hearing which was rather traumatic for those of us closely involved. At that
time our DC9 fleet had flown the equivalent of 14 million passengers to the
Moon and back with only two fatalities up to the Cinncinnati disaster. After
that the entire AC fleet had an interior and exterior change requirement so I
went back to Engineering to head up the Engineering team to redo the A/C
interiors and exterior paint scheme. I took early retirement from AC at end of
1990 and went up to First Air in Ottawa to be Senior Director Maintenance. All
in all a very interesting and rewarding career with Air Canada and the
association with the DC9 fleet.

Your article about the impending retirement of the DC-9 Fleet brings back a few
memories. I would be interested to know the fin numbers of the last few.
I flew on the first one , fin 702, and I remember commenting that passengers
should be paid to sit in the last two rows because of the noise.
Concerning other leases, I seem to remember another lease, during Expo 67, of a
114 seat version - whose was that?
The DC-9-32F freighter was a scary plane for loading - particularly when pallet
weights in Kilos in the front position were entered as Pounds in the load plan,
so that the aircraft could not rotate for take-off.

I definitely remember a DC-9 all economy configuration which was leased during
Expo 67. The aircraft I have in mind, if I'm not mistaken , belonged to Trans

. From the RAPCAN eMailNews issued by Duane Frerichs -
Flt. 587 unusual maneuvers.
F.E.W. Smith and I were aboard a DC3 test flight at Moncton base, in 1948.
The check pilot conducting the test terrified both of us by what he
called unusual maneuvers.
We were to sit strapped in our seats while he pulled the aircraft up to about
50 degrees and put on full right rudder. Then with the WHEEL FULL RIGHT
he said "recover!."
Both Frank and I recovered properly, but viewed this exercise with some
apprehension and told this worthy gentleman that we thought it was dangerous
in the extreme.
We took our complaints to Eric Jokinen and the exercise was stricken from the
"do list" instantly!
So it is not a brand new thing but I would agree that such practices in
modern aircraft would be suspect. After all the object is
to keep the aircraft right side up at all times. Violent side loads and
reverse vertical loads are to be avoided: i.e. concentrate on staying out of
harms way!!

*** One-Person Air Scooter Gets Off Ground
AP -- When you've spent millions of dollars and nearly six
years trying to make a personal flying machine, progress is
measured in small increments. So it's perhaps understandable
that the inventor of the SoloTrek is touting his most recent
breakthrough - getting the 325-pound machine a few feet off
the ground for 19 seconds - as a test flight. Reminiscent
of a chunky Buck Rogers jetpack, the 8-foot-tall SoloTrek
Exo-Skeletor Flying Vehicle has a gasoline engine that
drives two large fans. The pilot flies it in a standing
position and controls its movement with two joysticks. The
machine is designed to go 80 mph and fly 150 miles on one
tank of gas. Moshier plans to add a global positioning
system for navigation and a parachute-equipped ejector seat.

Bob says, "We'll tell 'em they're our seeing-eye dogs."

Herb Noble sends us this trivia question -
Did TCA or AC ever name their aircraft as CPA did
with their famous "Empress of.." if they did, when and what was the name,
this doesn't apply to Air BC or the name "Flying Merchant" carried on the
four North Stars freighters.

flew RCAF DC-4M North Star from Vancouver to Halifax in 8 hrs 32 mins, at
an average speed of 329 mph for 2785 miles.

Farewell to DC9 - 32
Just read in today's Daily News the last flight of AC DC9 - 32. This was my
favourite aircraft while I worked at Air Canada. I started in Engineering in
1968 assigned to look after the Wheels and Brakes and also the Landing Gear.
>From there I progressed to DC9 Airframe and Flight Controls, then Project
Manager for APUs and Accessories and then Maintenance Superintendent DC9 Fleet,
responsible for entire 42 A/C plus New York Air and other contracts. I was Supt
DC9 for 5 years during the early 80s when DC9 fleet was backbone of AC domestic
service. We all the remember the Cincinnati DC9 accident and the ensuing Public
Hearing which was rather traumatic for those of us closely involved. At that
time our DC9 fleet had flown the equivalent of 14 million passengers to the
Moon and back with only two fatalities up to the Cinncinnati disaster. After
that the entire AC fleet had an interior and exterior change requirement so I
went back to Engineering to head up the Engineering team to redo the A/C
interiors and exterior paint scheme. I took early retirement from AC at end of
1990 and went up to First Air in Ottawa to be Senior Director Maintenance. All
in all a very interesting and rewarding career with Air Canada and the
association with the DC9 fleet.

Subject: DC-9 Retirement
Your article about the impending retirement of the DC-9 Fleet brings back a few
memories. I would be interested to know the fin numbers of the last few.
I flew on the first one , fin 702, and I remember commenting that passengers
should be paid to sit in the last two rows because of the noise.
Concerning other leases, I seem to remember another lease, during Expo 67, of a
114 seat version - whose was that?
The DC-9-32F freighter was a scary plane for loading - particularly when pallet
weights in Kilos in the front position were entered as Pounds in the load plan,
so that the aircraft could not rotate for take-off.

I definitely remember a DC-9 all economy configuration which was leased during
Expo 67. The aircraft I have in mind, if I'm not mistaken , belonged to Trans
Caribbean Airlines or Airways. Does this ring a bell Keith Rhodes? Regards

Flt. 587 unusual maneuvers.
F.E.W. Smith and I were aboard a DC3 test flight at Moncton base, in 1948.
The check pilot conducting the test terrified both of us by what he
called unusual maneuvers.
We were to sit strapped in our seats while he pulled the aircraft up to about
50 degrees and put on full right rudder. Then with the WHEEL FULL RIGHT
he said "recover!."
Both Frank and I recovered properly, but viewed this exercise with some
apprehension and told this worthy gentleman that we thought it was dangerous
in the extreme.
We took our complaints to Eric Jokinen and the exercise was stricken from the
"do list" instantly!
So it is not a brand new thing but I would agree that such practices in
modern aircraft would be suspect. After all the object is
to keep the aircraft right side up at all times. Violent side loads and
reverse vertical loads are to be avoided: i.e. concentrate on staying out of
harms way!!

AP -- When you've spent millions of dollars and nearly six
years trying to make a personal flying machine, progress is
measured in small increments. So it's perhaps understandable
that the inventor of the SoloTrek is touting his most recent
breakthrough - getting the 325-pound machine a few feet off
the ground for 19 seconds - as a test flight. Reminiscent
of a chunky Buck Rogers jetpack, the 8-foot-tall SoloTrek
Exo-Skeletor Flying Vehicle has a gasoline engine that
drives two large fans. The pilot flies it in a standing
position and controls its movement with two joysticks. The
machine is designed to go 80 mph and fly 150 miles on one
tank of gas. Moshier plans to add a global positioning
system for navigation and a parachute-equipped ejector seat.

one.
Two retired airline pilots are walking their dogs in the park of a cold winter
day. One says to the other, "Charlie, it's cold. Let's go have a coffee."
The other pilot says, "They won't let us in with our dogs, Bob."
Bob says, "We'll tell 'em they're our seeing-eye dogs."
Charlie is skeptical but goes along, saying, "OK, you go first."
Bob enters the restaurant with his dog and immediately the maitre d' is at the
front and says, "I'm sorry, sir, but you can't come in here with a dog."
"I'm visually challenged," Bob says, his eyes hidden behind his aviation
sunglasses. "This is my seeing-eye dog.
"Oh, I'm sorry," answers the maitre d'. "Can I help you to a table? And that is
a beautiful German shepherd."
"Thank you," says Bob. "No, I'll pick my own way. I'm used to this."
Charlie, seeing this from outisde, enters the restaurant. He is immediately
blocked by the maitre d'. "I'm sorry, sir, you can't come into this restaurant
with a dog."
"I'm a blind person," says Charlie. "This is my seeing-eye dog."
"That chihuahua is your seeing-eye dog?" asks the maitre d', astounded.
Answers Charlie, "They gave me a chihuahua?"
