Subject: UPDATE LOCKHEED "TANGO CHARLIE CHARLIE"
Alan MacLeod sends us this update -
The Lockheed "Tango Charlie Charlie", the airlines' "Queen of the fleet",
has been busy.
On June the 7th Capt. Harvey Reid and Capt. Gerry Norberg flew the
aircraft from Dorval to Ottawa Uplands. Shell Aviation donated hangar
storage for the next three nights during its stay. During the days, "TCC"
flew, from the National Aviation Museum, at Rockliffe , in support of
DREAMS TAKE FLIGHT. Flights were booked to capacity and many folks had a
visit with our aircraft.
On Monday, June 10th, Capt. Patry and I flew with an M.O.T. inspector
representative, and completed our annual PPC (pilot proficiency check) to
keep our pilot license valid. We then ferried the aircraft to Toronto Pearson.
Weekend of June 14th,15th and 16th saw "TCC" at the annual Canadian
Aviation Trade show in Oshawa. While there we flew a trip with Ms. Nancy
Diamond, Mayor of Oshawa, along with her invited guests.
There were hundreds of folks visiting the aircraft and the DREAMS TAKE
FLIGHT group were there informing the people of the mission of Air Canada's
Lockheed.
This weekend, TCC flew from the Toronto Island City Center airport in
support of DREAMS. Capt Ted Dodds and Capt. Ken Patry had the flying
responsibilities. Flights were booked and a waiting list, as always, was in
place for "no show" flyers. There were no "no shows"!
Tango Charlie Charlie will have a rest now for the next couple of weeks in
Toronto Pearson. Then the aircraft heads to Atlantic Canada.

. Tony Etherington sent this information -
50 years ago, a BOAC airliner crashed landed 1,300 miles off course in
the Sahara desert. 18 of the 19 aboard survived.
The aircraft, a Handley Page Hermes G-ALDN, was cruising at 12,000 feet
over the Sahara, enroute from Tripoli in Lybia to Kano in Nigeria, during
the night of May 15th 1952.
At 0400 it was noticed that the sun was rising behind the aircraft rather
than on the port side. Due to a navagational error - no GPS in those days,
the calculation included the number 60 instead of 6.
Eventually the aircraft ran out of fuel and crash landed.
With the help of a Bedouin goat herder in 1955, a Bristol policeman, on a
vacation trip to Mauritania in west Africa, the aircraft was located and
the precise location recorded.
In January 2002, on a return visit to the site, the aircraft was
completely covered with sand. Efforts will soon begin to repatriate the
aircraft back to Duxford Air Museum to join the only other Hermes relic.
Aircrew for the crashed flight was Thomas Green, Monica Osborne, Len
Smee, Trevor de Nett, Thomas Smith and captain Robert Langley.

. Your copilot recently took a Mediterranean cruise -
Day 1 - Our day started at 02.50 when our friends collected us from our
hotel to take us to the designated bus pickup for travel to Gatwick. We
were joined by two other couples from the UK retiree group. Our flight was
by Monarch Airlines B757, a UK charter company, to Barcelona, a 2 hour
flight starting at 07.45 . At security, I was selected, randomly
apparently, to have my footwear checked for explosives, and I wasn't
wearing my built ups either. The service on the flight was excellent, the
meal consisted of orange juice, roll, preserves, omlette, ham, sausages on
a bed of baked beans - well it was a jet aircraft! Our party arrived in
Barcelona in good order, except for a suitcase of yours truly - the zipper
did not perform its intended purpose, so the appropriate claim for damage
to my Wal-Mart suitcase - which suddenly becomes a Samsonite - is being
processed as you read.
We had only a few hours at Barcelona, and had time to prowl along the
pedestrian street
to see the people performing mimes - facinating subjects.
Day 2 was a stop in Ibiza, where we strolled around the waterfront, but did
not take any of the optional bus tours.
Day 3 was the port of Malaga, where we took another stroll around the
waterfront, nothing too strenuous really.
Day 4 was in Gibraltar - now we enjoyed this town and took the tour which
ended up at the top of the mountain, where we saw one of the apes snatch
peoples food from their tables. We had been warned about this caper. Prices
are extremely good, especially for liquor - much cheaper than the duty free
at Heathrow. Gibraltar is a must visit.
Our final port visit was to Lisbon, rather a disappointment as we had spent
many visits in the past, but the city seems to be getting more depressive,
and prices certainly have increased since the joining with the European
Community.
Two days later, after crossing a rough Bay of Biscay, we arrived at
Harwich, where our bus awaited us. Midway through the trip we stopped at a
rest centre on the motorway, where, is you had any money left, Burger King
would be happy to sell you a hamburger and chips for gbp5.49, cheese
sandwich at gbp2.65 and a bagette for gbp3.49 something MacDonalds sell for
$1.49 over here. However, it is a captive market in those service centres,
as the same meal at the local Burger King where we stayed was had for a
mere gbp2.99. Gas was selling at 79.9 new pence per litre. Cigarettes
gbp5.15 for 20, beer gbp1.69 a glass. Average cost for B&B is gbp40.00
Our 7 day cruise cost gbp399 pp included the cruise, airfare and bus.
Accommodations at Heathrow Motel gbp37.50 share facilities, gbp47.50
ensuite and breakfast gbp3.00 pp. Free shuttle to/from airport and
underground. Bus service to local town of Hounslow passes the door.

. Our chief pilot - Vesta - found this -
*** Frisking the innocent
Boston Globe -- Although Al Gore has his faults
not even his most unsparing critic thinks he
might take it into his head to hijack an airplane.
But that didn't stop airport screeners from pulling
him out of line as he was preparing to board a
flight from Washington to Milwaukee last week and
running him through the full ''security'' check:
body scanned, briefcase rifled, underwear pawed
through. And it didn't stop them from doing it to
him again the next day when he flew to New York.
And so the 45th vice president of the United
States now has something in common with arthritic
grandmothers, diaper-wearing 2-year-olds, members
of Congress, and even the 44th vice president, Dan
Quayle: All have been subjected to pointless
airport searches that had nothing to do with
security and everything to do with political correctness.

. From your co-pilot.
During our recent sojourn to the old country, my wife and I experienced this
security method at Teeside airport UK when travelling standby to Heathrow -
After placing our carry-on baggage on the conveyer belt prior to it being
screened, my wife and I, as were all other passengers when their turn came,
were asked to stand at a certain point, and a photograph was taken, the result
came up on a nearby computer screen. The operator then attached a bar coded
strip on each of the boarding cards. When departing the lounge, where the
ticket coupon is lifted, the bar code is swiped and the resulting picture on
the near screen is compared with the presenter. We are not sure what happens if
the picture and person do not match - we were lucky, the flight was wide open
and we had not aged too much waiting for the flight to be called!
On a subsequent flight from Gatwick to Barcelona, we noticed the camera at the
security
baggage screening and, when we were not invited to have our pictures taken I
mentioned what happend at Teeside - we were told that the photo system is only
for UK internal flights.

Continental Airlines (COA/CO) began a new non-stop service linking Montreal
with Houston on June 1st using one of their 104-seat Boeing 737-500 aircraft.
This now links Montreal to all three major Continental hubs at Newark,
Cleveland and Houston. Continental Connection affiliate CommutAir will
begin new
service on June 17th between Montreal and Albany NY with four flights a day
using their 19-seat Beech 1900 aircraft. CommutAir is based in Plattsburgh NY

. Like to know!
Roma Donatelli sends this information -
Please note that the seating capacities shown on the employee web site
(to register for flights) are incorrect !!! For example, today May 9, 2002
on the Toronto to London England flights:
Flt nr Capacity per web site Actual seat chart at check-in Discrepancy
856 289 44J + 228 Y = 272 SEATS 17 SEATS
848 304 43J + 250 Y = 293 SEATS 11 SEATS
858 181 25J + 152 Y = 177 SEATS 5 SEATS
The discrepancy is caused by the following: If J-class is not heavily
booked, Yield Management in Montreal will artificially increase the Y capacity
in order to generate more bookings on the flight. However, this apparent
increase in capacity is only on paper, i.e. in the Res III booking system.
The actual aircraft seat charts are a much lower figure.
Unfortunately, the Employee Web Site takes it's figures from this
fictitious increased capacity in the reservations system, rather than from the
actual aircraft seat chart, thus creating erroneous information for staff
travel.
These incorrect figures have been going on for some time, on heavily
booked and overbooked flights, and are causing employees to get stranded away
from home base.

Robert Langham <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. > sends this information -
Hello all you fellow travelers,
Just a small note to tell you about a recent incident that occurred in May of
this year. On one of the legs of travel out of London Heathrow ( TERMINAL 3 )
to Lisbon using British Airways, my wife and I had to take our baggage (which
were backpacks) together with our hand luggage through security, because the
flight looked a little overbooked and maybe we had a good chance of getting on.
Well everything was searched, every pocket of the backpacks which were all
wrapped up in plastic, and my knives and scissors were automatically
confiscated of course resulting in missing the flight.
The security didn't do a bad job, but unfortunately missed a knife, (lethal
weapon). A note to anyone travelling out of TERMINAL 3 on a flight that looks
chancy and especially if one has to take checked baggage through security, take
all sharp objects from their hand luggage and checked baggage and tell
security.

Air Canada News:
Air Canada Re-Introduces Non-Stop Summer Service To Amsterdam. In addition to
the introduction of our new non-stop service from Toronto to Dublin, Air Canada
is pleased to announce the re-introduction of non-stop summer service between
Toronto and Amsterdam. Air Canada’s direct flights to Amsterdam and Dublin,
scheduled to operate until Oct. 24 and Oct. 26, 2002, respectively, complement
our year-round service to Ireland and the Netherlands via London Heathrow
offered in cooperation with our Star Alliance™ partner, bmi british midland.

Subject: FLIGHT at Science World
Science World is presenting "FLIGHT ", a delightful display about aviation
throughout history. It is of particular interest to children and families. The
Curator of the display, Raymond Nakamura, phd, is most anxious to have
volunteers with a background in the industry on hand to answer questions and
explain things to the visitors.
Ray can be reached at 604-443-7440, ext 7238, or
after 20 June. This is a really neat presentation, and should be great fun for
the volunteers. Murray Neilson, CP retd.

. Security at Heathrow
Robert Langham <
The security didn't do a bad job, but unfortunately missed a knife, (lethal
weapon). A note to anyone travelling out of TERMINAL 3 on a flight that looks
chancy and especially if one has to take checked baggage through security, take
all sharp objects from their hand luggage and checked baggage and tell
security.

From: Sheila Moscoe
I am flying to Dublin on the 7th July to spend 2 weeks driving around
Ireland (south). Are there any Netletter readers from Ireland who can
contact me before I go? Can anyone give me some ideas of which hotels
give us airline rates; anyone know of B&Bs that they could recommend.
Would appreciate hearing from you. Thanx.

Subject: Golf and touring in Quebec city area
We are wanting to spend a week in early Sep with NY friends of ours, in Quebec
City area, for a few days of golf and a few days of touring the old city.
I have researched the options, and wondered if you or any of your readers might
have a suggestion for both accommodation and golf venues. We are flexible as to
whether we mix and match the days depending on weather, or distances.
Any thoughts would be welcome.
Thanks so much, Marnie Rosettis <

Re the C1 issue mentioned in NetLetter nr 691 and confirmed by M.Phipps in nr

Industry Travel & Recognition advise the following -
Quote
It's one pass per year for eligible retirees/employees at this time.
It is proposed that we increase that to two per year, and forgo
the two tier sector charges (higher cost to list/sit in J) that had
been talked about.
The relevant rule is -
DEFINITION
ONE YEARLY SPACE AVAILABLE C1/J10 TRIP PASS TICKET IS OFFERED
TO EACH AC ACTIVE/RETIRED EMPLOYEE OR WIDOW-ER AND ELIGIBLE
FAMILY MEMBERS FOR PERSONAL TRAVEL.
Air Canada News:
Heavy Backlog In Pass Service Charge Deductions. Despite our efforts to clear
the backlog of employee travel service charge deductions, we are months behind
and have just finished auditing trip passes processed through the system from
Dec. 21 to Jan.18. We anticipate the backlog will remain until an automated
billing system is put in to place at the end of 2002. The security tax has also
required programming changes, so any travel after April 1 will not be processed
until the end of the summer. Until the backlog is cleared, Winnipeg Payrolls
will continue to deduct a maximum of $400 per month for employees paid monthly
and $300 per bi-weekly pay cheque, for any employee who has outstanding travel
passes over several months. For example, if you’re paid monthly and you’ve
traveled four times between January - March 2002, for a value of $450, you will
only be charged $400 in a given month, with the remaining $50 deducted the
following month. Exception: passes used for one trip !
with several people, for a value exceeding $400, will be deducted all at once.
We know this is frustrating and apologize.
Air Canada Offers Service To Dublin. Starting June 13th, Air Canada offers
customers daily, non-stop service from Toronto to Dublin and Shannon. This is
the only daily non-stop service between Canada and the Emerald Isle during the
peak summer period.

Niagara Peninsula Coffee Group - June Meeting
We were pleased to welcome four new members to our group this month. Don
Richardson, who held a number of senior positions in Air Canada and was then
appointed to establish Air Jamaica - which for a time was owned by Air Canada
before becoming wholly independent. Don and his wife Mae now reside in Niagara
on the Lake. Harry Raffai, an old colleague from Pearson Airport, and who now
makes his home in Vineland. Richard Klopka ex CPA Sales Rep. in Detroit and
Cleveland and now living in Niagara Falls. Also John Luty, former Nordair
employee and his wife Olga were introduced and welcomed into the Air Canada
family.
Chairman, Jim Morgan, gave a report on the main highlights of the
Pionairs A.G.M. in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Gord Dalziel, recently returned from
an Interline cruise in Hawaii, gave the group an insight into the benefits of
Interline travel. Finally, our hardworking Secy/Treas. Isabel Fox offered a
word of advice to everyone concerning the need to be on guard. Isabel and her
husband Alex were recently robbed in broad daylight while working in their
yard. They didn't see the intruders who entered their house and stole cash and
other items and left through the front door - leaving the door unbolted, which
alerted Isabel to the robbery. Police advised them that these individuals are
very bold and if challenged they will claim to be looking for a runaway dog or
some such story.
Bob Hainstock won the monthly prize of an Italian dinner for two
donated by Frados - the restaurant where we hold our meetings. Margaret Morgan
won a bottle of Niagara wine from the Pilliteri Winery. Visitors to our
meetings are encouraged to stay for lunch and fit in a visit to one of the fine
wineries in the Niagara area. Report submitted by Jim Morgan - Chairman.

. Gord and June Dalziel sent us a write up of their recent cruise -
It was a Great First Experience for me ( Gord ). The weather
was superb --Mid 80's with full sun every day.
Our trip commenced with a 9 hr., 47 min Flight YYZ to HNL,
on Air Canada. We were well looked after. Saw Three Movies.
Stayed at a Pre-arranged Ohana Waikiki Surf Hotel, which had
302 rooms and was located at 2200 Kuhio Ave, Waikiki. We used
their 1 - 800 - 668 - 7444 number to make the arrangements.
Had to show Airline I.D. on check -in as the room was waiting for us.
The hotel is located at Kuhio Ave., and Lewers Street.
This hotel is off the Beach some distance but on a Main Bus Line,
which made travel anywhere on the entire Island very easy.
It is only a short walk to many stores in the Royal Hawaiian
Shopping Centre and The Galleria Shopping Centre which made
access very easy. Shopping was also about 15 min bus ride to
the Ala Moana Centre. This was a Major Bus Connection location also.
The bus service is $ 1.50 each, each time you board THE BUS,
which their service is called. Transfers are valid within
about 30 Mins. A Vacationer's Pass good for 4 days, from
the first days use, is a more economical way to travel, for short stays.
A highly recommended Eatery near the Hotel, was Moose McGllycddy's
Pub, at 310 Lewers St. We found the stay pleasant, and the
Food Good, both at Breakfast and Dinner. The Beer was plentiful,
particularly during Happy Hour.
Another location for a Nice Fish meal was the Lewer Street Fish Company,
at 247 Lewers St. While in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Centre
the Royal Steak and Seafood Restaurant on the Third level was Good...
Other areas visited, were the Kodak Hula Show, which is now called
Pleasant Hula Show as it is owned by a Local Family now. It was still
worth the Visit. The USS Arizona Memorial was well worth the
Wait to see it. The Polynesian Cultural Centre some 35 miles from
Waikiki was well worth the day that it took to see all of the grounds,
including the Evening show after a buffet dinner.
There is lots to see and do, on the Island.
The Cruise departed Aloha Towers, HNL at 23:59 on May 22nd
and arrived 07:00 June 02nd at YVR, after making stops at
Nawiliwili, Kauai ; Kailua Kona ; Lahaina, Maui for 2 days;
and Hilo, Hawaii, before starting the 5 day trip to Vancouver.
With the exception of Lahaina, all stops were from 07:00 to 18:00
the same day. The ship, Royal Caribbean, Vision of the Sea's
kept a very good Schedule. We were kept as busy on board,
as we wanted to be each day and evening. Top Marks for the
Ships Staff. It was mentioned a couple of times that this Cruise
had some 400 plus, Airline people on board. among the approx.,
2,300 guests.
We enjoyed our Flight back home, from YVR on an A.C. B-747 Aircraft.
At this time we would like to " Thank All " who responded to our earlier
request for Hotel information in Waikiki..... Thank You......
I believe this is a Great means of sharing Travel Information,
so we can all benefit from each other's experiences. ALOHA ! ! !

husband Alex were recently robbed in broad daylight while working in their

The Cruise departed Aloha Towers, HNL at 23:59 on May 22nd
and arrived 07:00 June 02nd at YVR, after making stops at
Nawiliwili, Kauai ; Kailua Kona ; Lahaina, Maui for 2 days;
and Hilo, Hawaii, before starting the 5 day trip to Vancouver.
ALOHA ! ! !

Re your mention of the AC uniform display at the BC Air Museum
at Sidney. It's an excellent display and it brings back great memories of
earlier days; definitely a must-see. The uniforms were collected and donated
to the museum by
the Victoria "Dogwood" Chapter of the Canadian Maple Wings Association,
which is composed of former and current TCA/Air Canada flight attendants.
Thanks for keeping us so well informed and in touch with our former
workmates. Lois North
