AIRPORT SECURITY FEE UNDER REVIEW
The federal government is asking for the public's opinion on its air
security fee.
Security guards and firefighters at seven British airports plan to begin a
series of
six one-day strikes on Nov. 28. The walkouts will hit all seven airports,
including
busy Heathrow, at once, the Transport and General Workers Union said. Strike
dates are Nov. 28, Dec. 2, 10, 15 and 23 and Jan. 2, 2003. Salaries are the
main issue.

. Willis Cline sends us his experience -
This experience recently in Honolulu may be of interest to travelers. My wife
and I checked in for Flt 207/07/02 HNL to Lihue with a reduced rate stdby
ticket. The agent said there should be no problem as there were 30 open seats
on the 737, we were told to proceed to the gate and stand to the side until all
confirmed pax. had boarded. We were a group of 6 or 7 with A, B,C,D,E on our
boarding passes, D being circled on ours, I suppose to indicate boarding
priority. The gate agent asked for A,B,orC's and they proceeded on board. Then
he called D's and E's.We were told there was only 1 seat left and did we want
to split up. I thought this strange because of the info given at check in and
also my wife had counted the boarding load and reckoned about 65 .I recounted
the "30 open " info to him and he replied that "what happens out there has
nothing to do with what goes on here" Anyway we refused to be split so he told
us to wait on the loading bridge" by the trash can" and dismissed the other
"D"'s, a young couple, who ,I suppose traveled on a later flight. He
subsequently gave us permission to board with the comment that there wouldn't
be seats together. In fact, there were plenty of seats, I would estimate 20 or
more,in coach. I'm really puzzled by this experience. Was the gate agent
looking for a bribe? or when asked if we would split, did he mean that there
wouldn't be two seats together? There were several sets of 2 seats and indeed,
entire rows empty.
Aloha, Bill Cline.

From the Vancouver Island and Gulf Island newsletter -
District Directors Meeting
The District Directors Meeting was held in Ottawa on October 26th with the
National Executive. One of the highlights was a talk given by Reine Khantchand,
Manager, Employee Travel and Recognition. Reine advised that December 14th 2002
will be the date of implementation of the new "ticketless’ pass travel system
and encouraged all retirees to endeavour to get on line or at least try and get
help from someone who is computer literate for future pass registration. Voice
recognition registration will still be available, but at this time the system
is not foolproof (company plans to update this system in the coming year). We
are anticipating that booklets outlining the new procedures will be available
in limited numbers by early December.

We
are anticipating that booklets outlining the new procedures will be available
in limited numbers by early December.

. Air Canada News -
Jazz announces more streamlining measures. On Nov 5th., Air Canada Jazz
announced it was continuing to streamline its operation to achieve better
efficiency within a difficult environment. The dramatic drop in short-haul
passenger traffic has necessitated the need to shrink the carrier’s flying
schedule and further reduce its work force by another nine per cent, or 391
full time equivalents – Jazz has already cut about 100 flight-attendant and 26
airport jobs. Jazz will work with its employees and unions to manage the issue
through various mitigation programs currently under discussion, and those
included in collective agreements.
Len Kruller sent this -
The first winter storm hit the Pacific coast States with full fury on
yesterday with near hurricane force winds and heavy rains, causing wide spread
damage on the ground and delays in air traffic. As part of this, Air Canada
made the news as the roof of the Air Canada Air Cargo facility at SFO airport
sustained substantial damage.
I am sure that there will be more details on this in the days ahead.

4th February Theatre Trip “Bombay Dreams”. Details later.
Our Gang’s trip to YHZ (that is Halifax to those whose memories have failed!)
The report of the trip was written to Ben and Ruth Benfold.
We knew that this trip was going to be a good one, as soon as we read about it
and boys (as well as girls), we were absolutely bang on! To start at the
beginning, Ruth and I presented ourselves at the check-in desk at LHR and were
seen to immediately by a most charming and helpful girl. When she checked and
found my service date started in 1949, she was astonished and said that she
wasn’t sure if her mother had been born at that time. I got the distinct
impression that she was going to offer us wheelchairs! Good luck smiled on us
from then on. Security was over in less than five minutes, and when we ambled
into the departure lounge, we were confronted with the beaming faces of Brian
Davies and Archie Furzer, together with their delightful spouses, Pauline and
Jill. On handing our standby boarding cards to the desk, we were immediately
given boarding cards to that most delightful of places Up Front. Sheer,
unadulterated joy. The flight was first-class, literally and metaphorically.
On arrival at YHZ, some very knowledgeable soul (I forget who) booked a bus for
all of us for just $12 a head to the hotel. The hotel was excellent and we
were fortunate enough to have a room with a beautiful view of a lake. Moving
on to our hilarious and interesting trip in a school bus that was long past its
retirement date as far as shock absorbers were concerned, we departed from the
hotel on Wednesday at 9.30 am for Fisherman’s Cove. This was a delightful
tourist attraction and we wandered around for an hour, visiting gift shops,
cafes etc. We then drove to “Fairlawn Cemetery” where a section of the
grounds was allotted to 320 bodies recovered from the sea by the local
fishermen when the “Titanic” sank in that area in 1912. Most of the bodies
were unidentifiable and so were interred with just a number and the date of
death. The graves were very well cared for, but it really was a most somber
occasion.
Our next “port of call” was Alexander Keiths Brewery. This was a most
interesting exhibition depicting the brewery as it was when it was established
in 1820. The staff and guides were dressed in the clothing of that period and
took us through a series of tableaux, highlighting the various stages of beer
production. The grand finale was a free mug of the most potent beer that we
have ever tasted.
On to the evening, and we were driven in our gut-shaker to a farm where we were
loaded on to 2 wagons, each drawn by 2 enormous Shire horses, carrying 24
people each, for approximately 1 mile to a large barn for a barbeque of either
steak or salmon, along with all the trimmings. The food was of a quality that
gourmets dream about!
At our evening meal/wagon ride, it was good to see Ken McLeod, Director of
Pionairs in Halifax, joining us. Also Bruce Paxton, who originally worked at
Heathrow. Some of us then ended up playing pool on the resident pool table and
we were then taken back by the wagons through the pitch dark countryside to our
bus. So ended our second day with everyone singing in the most discordant
voices on the ride back. The driver, to get us into the spirit of things,
took us over every pothole he could find at speed and there was a constant wail
of xxxxxxxx or something similar from the back of the bus which caused laughter
from the people in front.
The final day saw us heading for the town of Lunenberg, a world heritage site
which was a drive of about
90 minutes. We stopped on the way back to see the crash site of the Swissair
flight which went down off the coast a few miles from “Peggy’s Cove” and saw
the memorial commemorating it. Our last stop was at “Peggy’s Cove” which, with
its famous lighthouse and prehistoric boulders, was very picturesque and a
great tourist attraction. Then back to the hotel to end a wonderful trip.
We cannot thank Jack and Aureen enough for the excellent work they put into
this and look forward in great anticipation to the trip next year!
I nearly forgot to mention the weather; this was absolutely perfect with a
striation of a vapour trails meandering across a flawless blue sky right
throughout our trip.

Industry News:
British Airways first airline to use warning cards on ground. The Associated
Press is reporting that British Airways is the first airline to introduce a
system of soccer-style warning cards for disruptive passengers on the ground.
According to the report, the airline says any passenger who is disruptive or
abusive toward a member of its ground staff will be shown a yellow warning
card. If they do not calm down, they may be refused aboard their flight, and
police may be called in extreme cases. The carrier is already using the yellow
card system in the air, reportedly to some success.
(Perhaps, in north America, a scheme of 'yards lost' may be applied or time in
a penalty box which means the miscreant would have to run further or faster to
catch their flight - eds)

Lockheed Constellation returns to Europe -
Saturday 28th September 2002
At 13:00 hours local time, the Lockheed Constellation of the Dutch
National
Aviation Museum Aviodome arrived in the Netherlands. During the flight
from
Manston to Lelystad the Connie was escorted by an Orion of the Dutch
Navy Air Service and a Fokker 50 of KLM Cityhopper.
The Lockheed Constellation N749NL from the Dutch National Aviation Museum
Aviodome has arrived in the Netherlands. After almost 2 years of hard
work in Arizona and a delivery flight that took 2 weeks, the arrival in the
Netherlands was a big success. After the official arrival in the Netherlands,
the
Connie flew to Schiphol Airport. Here, in one of the largest KLM hangars, the
Connie is being painted in the old KLM livery and further maintenance will be
performed. Next year, 2003, the Connie will be one of the big attractions in
the new Aviation Themepark in Lelystad (60 kilometers Northeast of Amsterdam).
Check the web site www.aviodome.nl/connieng.htm for a complete story of the
flight from the US to Holland complete with some stunning pictures.
Carl tells us about his early involvement -
KLM was the first company outside the USA to purchase the Lockheed's in those
days. I worked for the now defunct Fokker Factory producing Gloster Meteors and
Sea Furies and dreamed about ever working on such majestic bird which
materialized in the early sixties when KLM ferried the last conny via YUL to
the States (in those days we handled the KLM DC8-30 in Dorval) and I was
honoured by changing the batteries!
Ever since the conny left Holland there was a group of people who strived to
have the bird back and they succeeded and it will be painted in the than KLM
livery and will be moved to the National Museum "AvioDome"
So much for my involvement with the L749.

We have the following answer to the May Day in NetLetter nr 732 -
Hello,
We were in Sydney last year and had no accommodations for the evening we flew
in. We went straight to the tourist help/accommodation desk in the airport and
found they were most helpful. They found us room at reasonable rates at Potts
Point / Kings Cross in the hotel Deverres. Very satisfactory and close to many
restaurants, B.Y.O.B. and Metro . We have travelled across Australia quite a
number of times and used the self-help desks in various cities and found them
very useful. Happy travels.
