. Need to know.
Heavy loads to Honolulu - bring alternate tickets.
Flight forecasts for the next several weeks for travel between Vancouver-Honolulu
don't look promising for contingent travellers and/or their travel partners.
Our flights are full, which may result in denied boarding situations.
If you're Honolulu bound, be sure to buy tickets on other carriers before leaving home,
and remember to tell your travel partners that they can only travel Air Canada network
operated flights.
Effective April 7, when in the Toronto area, you'll have to add the 905 area code when
making a local call within the 905 area. Instead of dialling a local seven-digit number,
you'll need to add your three-digit area code this is local 10-digit dialling.
So when you're in the 905 area and you're calling 555-1234, you'll need to dial 905-555-1234.
Also, please check your speed-dial lists (including Fax and Cell Phones),
modem auto-diallers, call forwarding services, call initiated databases,

. News from the Pionair Districts -
From the London England monthly newsletter -
UK Pionairs AGM is planned for June 4th at the Air Canada, Radius Park,
Faggs Road, Hatton Cross, LHR starting at 11:00.
Other exciting dates -
Apr 23rd ACRA Theatre trip "Beautiful Game"
May 6th Commercial vehicle rally at Brighton.
Sept 10th ACRA Theatre trip "My Fair Lady"
Oct 17-24th "Smoky Special" UK Pionairs trip to Tennessee.
"Smoky Special 2001" is this years annual jaunt by the UK Pionairs. At this time
there are 70 people and the numbers are closed.
Olde Tyme Music Hall.
Shirley & David Peters have produced this write up of the event - edited!
Sunday Mar 11th at 10:00, 52 Pionairs set off in a coach to Turner's located in
Northampton. It is a large corrugated steel-clad warehouse-type building and
really quite deceptive from the outside, it was warm and comfortable inside.
The hall can hold 700 people, seated at tables and has a very large stage
with wide screens on either side onto which the stage activity is projected.
Lunch was served and then the entertainment started. It was good old
fashioned musical hall fun - skits, comedy, singing, dancing, wonderful music
in fact - in a word - it was "spendiferous". All in all it was great entertainment.
You need to be in good voice when attending a function of this sort to compete
with all the other groups there. The Pionairs certainly were - in fact we were
on the winning side!
From the Vancouver Island District -
The spring luncheon was held at the Princess Mary restaurant on Tuesday
April 3rd, emceed by Director John Jeffrey to 74 Pionairs and spouses
which included 12 members of CAIRE, who were welcomed and identified
individually, especially their President Jo Kennedy, with an acknowledgement
of the help provided to the Pionair National President Saville Hambleton during
the integration of the CAIRE members into the Pionairs.
Out of towners were from Ladysmith, Nanaimo, Salt Spring Island, Langley,
and Qualicum Beach.
It was announced that those wishing to attend single or multi events at the
upcoming A.G.M. in Calgary could make their applications, using the
application form included with the A.G.M. package, to Norm Stoddart -
Reception at $20.00 Dinner & Dance at $50.00 and Banquet at $50.00
The door prize, a porcelain seagull, was donated by Margaret Cantwell, and,
as the donation by the district at the upcoming A.G.M. a hand carved wooden
bowl by member Frank Takasaki.
Saville Hambleton was introduced to the gathering and explained the various
functions of his executive and advised us that 4,400 applications to join the
Pionairs had been sent to CAIRE members. Since Jan this year, 1,359 had
responded favourably. The Pionair family nationally now totals 8,040.
Bill Rowe, the Pension representative spoke about the pension, providing an
insight into its operation, and quoting a sum of 6.2 billion at year end 2000,
an increase of 13.7% over year end 1999, despite a loss of 250 million since
Sept 2000 when the market had a down turn. Bill made mention that the majority
of the holdings in Nortell had been off loaded prior to the down turn of their shares.
In answer to a question from the floor, Bill stated that there were no plans for the
merger of the CAIL and Air Canada pension plans.
In closing, John Jeffreys mentioned the CAIRE annual golf which is being held on
Wednesday August 15th at the Arrowsmith Golf Course, to which all have been
invited. Deadline is June 15th - call Bill Wood at 250-245-0747.
The Comox Valley (Vancouver Island) Pionairs plan to have their monthly luncheon
on Thursday April 26th at the Glacier Golf Club in Comox start at 11:45
Last months meeting attracted 32 Pionairs and spouses, including 10 from the
C.A.I.R.E. membership.
All are welcome - contact Murray Phipps

The buffet tables - both hot and cold - are sumptuous, enjoy a custom

Its a rustic family style restaurant, with wood tables and chairs; thick linen
serviettes, pleasant dining areas and rooms for groups. Service is tops.

pension information insurance matters, airport development, travel deals, etc, etc.
Hard to get-at-information seems to be available.

. Tom Grant sends us this -
Subject: AC B747 crash landing pic
I am getting more inquiries about the photograph which depicts an Air Canada
747 with its fuselage exploding at the rear upon landing.
The photo is a fake - a fake in bad taste. Unfortunately, the "artist", whoever it
was, left the Air Canada name on the aircraft and that is how it is making the
rounds. The name has since been removed and sits on a website at
http://www.aviationpics.de/fun/fake/fake.htm
Here it will tell you how it was made. (I believe the aircraft was photographed
at YVR, altho I was out to the airport a few weeks ago and couldn't replicate
the shooting angle unless I was to go into the runway perimeter - I would have
been arrested in a couple of minutes ;-) Regards Tom
Largest Airfield Project in 40 Years Set to Start at Winnipeg International Airport

project in 40 years at Winnipeg International Airport - the rehabilitation of pavement
and lighting for Runway 13/31.
Set to be completed at the end of July 2001, this $10.5 million project will ensure
continued safe aircraft operations at Winnipeg International Airport as well as
upgrade the runway high intensity edge and approach lighting to meet new federal
standards. The runway pavement is nearing the end of its life span.

. Jack Morath from London England sends us this information -
The Hotel de Glace Quebec is based on a much larger ice hotel at Jukkasjarvi
in Sweden, where guests snuggle into sleeping bags on top of animal fur in the
beds, which are also made of ice.
Guests to North America's first ice hotel are treated to luxury ice suites,
at ca$285 for a single room, an ice bar, two art galleries and a movie theatre.
More than 4,500 tonnes of snow and 450 tonnes of ice went into the Quebec
city-area hotel which opened in January 2001.
Jack and Aureen Morath recent took a trip to Spain and Andorra, here are some
impressions -
Recently returned from our trip to Spain and Andorra and now catching up
with everything. It normally takes a week to get on top of everything again.
Re our trip - it was OK!! We had a week and had a car for one week and drove
to Andorra which was only 5 hours drive but we took a couple of days.
We found that there was a shortage of hotels everywhere and parking was a
problem in the towns and it was necessary to pay extra per night to park in the
hotels garage. English was spoken very much but got by with a bit of French as well.
Scenery was great in Andorra and surrounding areas. As it was March, the
weather was not all that hot, but at least it was dry and the temperature between
55 and 75. Spent a couple of days in Barcelona but hotels very expensive and we
managed to find a hotel at a small town further along the coast.

Delta Air Lines is saying a big "thank you" to an Alaska town that gave a
gracious welcome to a Delta flight diverted there in a precautionary landing
on March 23. Residents of Cold Bay, Alaska, -- population 69 -- took 220
passengers and crew members into their homes, cooked breakfast and
provided blankets after Delta Flight 79, a McDonnell-Douglas 11 aircraft,
made an unscheduled stop at the Alaska Peninsula village en route to Tokyo
from Los Angeles.
In gratitude for the town's hospitality, Delta will provide $7,000 to enable
Cold Bay to receive a matching grant from the state of Alaska for a new two-way
radio system for local emergency medical technicians (EMT). Delta also sent
a gift of 50 cases of fresh fruit and vegetables not grown on the windswept tundra
and will send Delta T-shirts for the kids at Cold Bay School. Jim Zerbe,
Delta will present a check to the mayor, as well as a plaque officially thanking
the people of Cold Bay, in a ceremony this week.

Tom Martin found this one -
Former ramp and customer service people might get a kick out of a bit from
the January issue of Airways.
It seems there was concern over the number of lost luggage claims involving
flights at London City airport - LYC. Was it theft or what? So one airline sent an
executive to investigate. He could find no reason. When he boarded for his
return flight and looked out the window he saw a tractor pulling carts loaded
with luggage and as the driver sped up and turned the corner he saw several
bags slide off the carts and into the Thames. When the river was dredged they
found at least 50 missing suitcases.
The same January issue has a good article on the demise of Canadian Airlines .

. News from the CAIRE Chapters -
CAIRE Chapter 2 - Vancouver & Gulf Islands held their final luncheon on Mar 29th.
This final meeting, emceed light heartedly by President Jo Kennedy was attended
by 88 retirees and spouses.
Guest attendee was John Jeffrey and his wife. John is the Air Canada Pionair
Director for the Vancouver Island District.
Jo reminded the gathering of the history of the Chapter when, in May 1994,
Capt. John Anderson was asked by the CAIRE Central Board to form a Chapter
to cover Vancouver and the Gulf Islands. John became its first President on
May 26th of that year until 1995.
It was mentioned that John's name would still be remembered from the
John Anderson Golf Trophy. From 1995 to 1998 Harold Thomas was the
President and from 1998 until the present time, Jo Kennedy.
With a majority vote, it was agreed that any surplus monies remaining, after
the windup of Chapter 2, will be donated to the "Help fill a dream" charity.
It was announced that, to date, 1,320 CAIL retirees world wide had applied for
membership in the Air Canada Pionairs. There are approximately 4,000 CAIL
retirees.
The past work of Vice President Lorna Koivula was recognized who, in turn,
presented a bouquet of flowers to Jo Kennedy on behalf of the Chapter.
Jo Kennedy recognized the work of the volunteers and appreciation was shown
by the gathering in the usual manner.
The next meeting was announced as the Air Canada Pionairs luncheon in
Victoria on Apr 3rd.
The final motion to "wind up" Chapter 2 was carried unanimously.

Subject: Female Flight Attendant Uniform
Fred Coyle sends this request -
A friend of mine who is a volunteer at the Aviation Museum at
Victoria Airport asked me whether I could get an old Air Canada uniform
for them.
So if someone out there could donate a female Flight Attendant's Uniform,
circa 1950 or earlier, would that person be kind enough to let me know?
The uniform would be put on display at the museum and it would be
acknowledged as having been donated by the person who wore it.
Thanks a lot. Fred CoyleThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Subject: TCA and Air Canada logos
From Tom Grant -
To our Vancouver area readers:
I am looking to borrow any original material or large photographs
of any TCA or Air Canada logos spanning TCA/AC life.
I wish to scan this for a family of a Pionair who is being presented
with an important life gift.
I will personally pick up the material and have it returned in 48 hours.
If you can help please email me at
Thanks for your consideration. Tom Grant
Fred Coyle

Harmonized personal travel priorities - no news yet -
When we (Air Canada) communicated information about the harmonized
travel policy in September 2000, we had hoped that seniority integration
issues would be resolved by the time a single Air Operator Certificate (AOC)
was granted. We had also hoped that boarding priorities could be harmonized
without an impact on seniority decisions.
The reality is that arbitration hearings are expected to continue for several
months. In order to avoid giving the appearance of a bias in these sensitive
deliberations, NO changes will be made to the current personal travel
boarding priorities until such time as a majority of these seniority issues have been confirmed.
Air Canada's regional airlines announced that effective May 7,
there will be daily non-stop F-28 jet service between
Indianapolis and Toronto.

Air Canada Celebrates 50 Years Of Flying Between Montreal And Paris.
Two beavers marked the official inauguration of Air Canada's passenger air
service between Montréal and Paris as the airline, then known as
Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA), touched down in Paris on April 1, 1951
to much fanfare and celebration.
The first flight was also the first Canadian air link with continental
Europe and it set the stage for an unprecedented boom in tourism, trade and
travel across the Atlantic.
Back in April 1951, weekly passenger service from Montréal to Paris' Orly
International Airport was operated with 40-seat DC-4M "North Star" propeller
aircraft. Flight time was 14 hours with stops in Reykjavik for fuel and London
Heathrow. Today, a non-stop flight from Montréal to Paris Charles de Gaulle
takes six hours and 45 minutes on one of Air Canada's state-of-the-art 292-
passenger A330 aircraft featuring the airline's acclaimed Executive First and
Hospitality service.
Following is Air Canada's new schedule between Montréal and Paris as of
June 15 until September 30, 2001:
Montréal Paris Paris Montréal
AC870 (A330) 1930 0815 AC871 (A330) 1050 1230

. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -
Air Canada and Korean Air flights to Seoul started using the newly opened
airport called Incheon (ICN) today. The old airport called Kimpo (SEL) will be
kept in operation for domestic flights primarily. The new airport was built offshore
to avoid noise and curfew problems and has made allowances for future
expansion of runways and terminal facilities.
Air Canada is re-entering the Cuba market this summer. Turns out that in
addition to the Toronto-Varadero route starting on May 5th, it will be starting service
from Toronto to Ciego de Avilla on May 6th once per week on Sundays.
A Montreal-Varadero route will also be operated on Sundays starting May 6th as well.
This will make three flights per week during the summer months and the first time
Air Canada has ever operated into the airport at Ciego de Avilla.

A Red Light, a Peephole and a Whisper
As a Midwest Express jetliner approached the Omaha airport last week,
a warning light in the cockpit indicated a possible landing gear problem.
Following standard procedure, the crew aborted, informed passengers of the
situation, and a pilot walked back to check through a floor peephole whether
the landing gear was locked down or had a real problem. After struggling to
pull up a new carpet, the pilot spent several minutes staring into the hole
sat up, then stared again. A large passenger with huge hands leaned over and
whispered, "Would you like an A&P [airframe and power plant] mechanic with
30 years experience on the DC-9 to take care of this?" to the pilot. "Yes, sir,"
the pilot replied. The mechanic said it didn't take more than two seconds to
see that the gear was down and locked. The pilot returned to the cockpit and
announced the news that an experienced mechanic was on board and
everything was all right. As he thanked the mechanic again upon deplaning,
the mechanic handed the pilot his card. The pilot looked at it:
"John Goglia, member, National Transportation Safety Board" and former
mechanic with USAir.

Subject: pass charges
Just a quick note to ask you to warn all your readers to check their latest
pension statement carefully for incorrect pass usage charges.
I was charged for a pass from YQB to YWG obviously done by a resident of Quebec
as the taxes were GST and QST. I have not been off Vancouver Island for over a year
so it stood right out to me but may not be evident to others that have charges
for passes that they have used.
The helpful lady I talked with in YWG indicated that there had been several other
cases of errors in pass charges.
Cheers, Alastair Alves

The golden retriever was one of 50 dogs and
their handlers who were at Newark International Airport recently
to become familiar with the sights, smells and feel of the place.
The dogs eventually will be trained to guide a blind person through
the airport. United Airlines supervisor Eileen Ammiano advised the
handlers and fielded questions such as how long can dogs spend on
an airplane without having to go to the bathroom - some have gone
14 hours on transoceanic flights - and does the airline provide
dog food? At nearly 6 months old, Vail had already learned to
respond to commands to sit and heel. But he was also one of the
more rambunctious dogs at the airport outing, fidgeting and
barking when he had to sit still too long. Luckily for his
trainer, Vail was not one of the two dogs that left behind little
souvenirs on the concourse carpeting on their way to the plane.
