In elaborating on the information regarding the arrangement with Air New Zealand
mentioned in NetLetter nr 596, Industry Travel advises -
This is only an enhancement to the business travel agreement for
active employees, i.e., AC employees can self-ticket for business
travel on NZ.
We received the following query -
I have heard rumors that the spousal 25-year cards are being
discontinued and that the spouses are now only able to travel if the
employee signs the pass.
To which Industry Travel responded -
This is not a rumour. Vicki advised retirees who attended the AGM
in Calgary and explained that this spousal was part of the
presentation to the employee on his/her 25th anniversary.
There were a number of issues involved in producing, revising and
distributing 25-year anniversary spousal cards, as well as
retrieving the card (in the case of a divorce), to the degree that
it became necessary to discontinue this practice.
Spousal cards for active employees have an expiry date. They can
still be used until they expire; however, they will not be
replaced. As of January 2001, active employees did not receive a
spousal card on their 25th anniversary and will imprint passes for
their better half.
Spousal cards for retired employees do not have an expiry date and
they can still used as long as they still have them. But, once
reported lost or stolen, the cards will not be replaced.
Quite a number of active and retired employees have raised their
concerns that they were unable to retrieve the spousal card from
their legal or common-law spouse after a divorce or termination
of common-law relationship and some even had to take legal action
to get back the card.

. Tom Grant editor of RAPCAN web site sends this tip -
Having trouble receiving email? People phoning you and saying their email to is being bounced back? Well, then maybe you have a full mail box on your ISP's mail server.
ISPs have some restriction on how big your mail box can be. This is not much of a problem for most people because they have their emailers set to take the email they download removed from the mail server at the time they receiver their mail.
But here is an instance that many do not consider. Most people put a size restriction on how large an attachment they will accept with an incoming email message. This prevents large attachments from being downloaded from senders you don't know. If you have a restriction it will probably give a message like this when an incoming email has an attachment that is oversize.
"WARNING: The remainder of this message has not been transferred.
The estimated size of this message is 1653469 bytes.Click on the Retrieve From Server icon above and check mail again to get the whole thing. (If ou're reading this in the preview pane, you'll need to open the message to see the icon.) If the Retrieve From Server icon is not showing, then this message is no longer on the server."
If you know the sender, you download the email and attachment per the instruction. But if you don't know the sender or don't want the attachment, you should not simply ignore this by sending the message to the Trash. Why? Because the large attachment is still sitting on your ISP's mail server taking up space in your mail box. And if you only have, say, 10mb of space, you can see that it wouldn't take many discarded attachments of this size to fill up your mail box and have all incoming mail bounced back to the senders.
What should you do? Follow the procedure as outlined in the Warning, but instead of clicking on the "Retreive From Server" icon, click on the "Delete From Server" icon. As soon as you check for new mail, the email with the attachment will be deleted from the mail server and not downloaded to you.
(The foregoing is based on Eudora Pro. MS Outlook and Outlook Express are similar in function.)

A Japanese tourist offered a Montreal-based Airport agent $200 CA for his Air Canada Grand Prix shirt. From a customer service perspective, we're sure the agent would give the customer "the shirt from his back," in this case, the agent politely refused, and kept his shirt. Gives a new meaning to how "hot" Air Canada's Grand Prix merchandise is.

. Colin Bailey sends us this information -
Subject: The Viking Aircraft
I read with interest the item regarding the Viking aircraft. I had the dubious honour of
working in them back in 1947. They were in fact the civilian version of the "Wimpy" Wellington
bomber and utilized the same geodetic construction. One of the passenger "delights" of this
machine was the fact that the main spar went through the cabin and had to be climbed over
if you were seated in the front of the cabin. All the "avionics" were war surplus using such
equipment as the 1083/84 as the high frequency gear. The antenna was the old trailing
antenna which had to be winched in and out by hand. On occasions a red faced radio operator
would appear at the radio shop to announce that he had forgotten to wind it in prior to landing.
Unlike in war time this meant that the police had to be informed to check and find out if any
property damage had been done. One passenger complaint that caused a certain amount of amusement among employees was the frequent report of people getting a violent electric
shock when sitting on the toilet. It subsequently emerged the metal seat had not been bonded
to the frame and picked up a charge as the aircraft went through certain types of cloud.
Strange as it may seem to us today, the Viking, even on a short trip from London to Paris
would carry a captain, first officer ,navigator and radio operator.
London Airport in those days was not yet Heathrow but Northolt.

. Tom Grant, Editor of the RAPCAN web site sends this tip -
Well, it seems that a lot of people got stung (again) by the recent virus hoax.
It goes to show you can't be too skeptical in cyberspace. Here is an analogy given to
me by a teenage neighbour which might help.
"If you received an "official" looking letter in the mail at your home, that said in order to
prevent all your furniture from being destroyed, your food from being contaminated, the
ultimate destruction of your house and finally the wrath of God being brought down upon
your family, you should turn off the power and water supply, sit on the floor and chant and sacrifice the family dog. Then you should make copies of the letter and send it to everyone
on your Christmas card list. Would you do this without first checking the validity of the letter?"

. A comment on the list in NetLetter nr 591 from one of our readers -
The subject checklist in NL591 is a good one but I suggest that "nearby" in
the first item ("Keep your luggage, purse and valuables nearby when
checking in.") could be woefully inadequate.
TRAVELLERS BEWARE! The notorious overseas risks of very adept
purse/bag-snatchers and pickpockets, etc. now apply in Canada too; at least
in Montreal. Police and h/motel staff confirm that there are one or more
known gangs doing the rounds of h/motels and the airport looking for
opportunities. We can testify from painful and costly experience, with
consequences still unfolding. Even though you're standing right beside
your bags, it only takes a split second for one member to grab something
and disappear after others have created a diversion, engaged you in
conversation, etc.. We had the long shot bad luck to cross paths with such
a gang, while my briefcase was briefly unattached to the other bags, all of
them "nearby", in the small lobby of an airport h/motel about 6 p.m. on a
recent Saturday.
Briefcases and bags that look likely to hold laptop computers are especial
targets. Mine looked like it but "fortunately" my laptop was in the shop
for repair. Unfortunately, the bag did contain passports, travellers cheques,
credit cards, cash, blank cheques, house keys, and significant personal
information.
With such extensive, potentially catastrophic losses, it soon became clear
that there was no alternative but to return home. One specific reason: if
you lose your Canadian passport in Canada, a replacement requires the same
process as a normal applicaton/renewal (App. Form, photos, guarantor), PLUS
making a Statutory Declaration (as to how lost) which must be notarized or
equivalent. So you'll need proof of citizenship (eg, birth certificate,
which I left at home because I had a passport!).
The aftermath is a long, complex and on-going process (I feel I could write
a book and/or become a consultant!).
Finally, I'd suggest an additional line item to the NL591 checklist:
- If a stranger approaches you or speaks to you or a commotion occurs,
ensure the security of your purse/wallet/bags/possessions first, before you
look at him/her/it.

It seems that Carl Icahn is just not going
to be happy until he has another bankrupt airline to play with. The
financier, fresh off his failed attempt to take over Trans World

Vegas-based carrier has been in bankruptcy proceedings since December.

. Smilie.
Sent to us by Bill Maclaren - a retired BA employee who served 40 years with the airline
and has been retired for 23 years. Back in the 1980's we had a BA 747 arrive
at our JFK terminal with over 400 passengers and I'll let you guestimate the
number of pieces of baggage on board. One of the first male passengers
entering the customs area asked the attending Passenger Officer if there was
a restroom in the customs area. The traffic officer confirmed "Yes there
was" and showed the passenger to the restroom. Ten minutes later the
traffic officer was puzzled to see the passenger emerge from the restroom
carrying a bag. He was even more puzzled when the passenger said " That is
the quickest I have ever had my bag delivered to me. I was standing in the
restroom when suddenly two ceiling tiles fell to the floor and my bag dropped
at my feet! The baggage conveyor belt (which has 4 feet sidewalls) passes
over the restroom area on its way from ramp side to the carousel in the
arrivals area. The baggage had become wedged over the men's washroom and
this particular passenger"s bag had climber to the top of the baggage jam up,
toppled over the 4ft walls knocking out two ceiling tiles and conveniently
dropping at his feet. At that time BOAC had the slogan "BOAC takes good care
of you!" and the passenger commented that the airline was "Living up to it's
slogan" That was "one for Ripley"
The foregoing is from my talk "Anecdotes from 50 years in Civil Aviation" which
I have given to church groups and retired mens' clubs

---unquote---
I am a widow and have always used 421 pass tickets. Can you clarify?
Joan Strick
Saville Hambleton has responded -
In error we omitted three words to the line you are referring to in the 'AGM
Highlights', that line should have read .... 421 passes 'on interline
carriers'. We have since corrected the 'Highlights' release. Sorry about
that. Regards, Saville
From the YYZNEWS issued by brian Dunn -
In addition to previously announced winter route flying Air Canada will also be operating four A320s per week from Toronto to Holguin Cuba effective December 5th. The much talked about new non-stop A340 service between Vancouver and Delhi India has still not been put into the Reservation systems for sale.
The Canadian government still has to decide whether Air Canada or Canada 3000 is going to be given the route authority and neither airline can sell seats until that has been established. Canada 3000 announced their intention to fly the route quite a bit ahead of
Air Canada and since AC has been in and out of the India market three times previously,
it is not at all assured of getting the route authority back this time!
Helen Gordon sends this advice -
Subject: Travel: Cuba
Just read about the discounts with Air Canada Vacations to Cuba. As a
retired employee who has travelled to Cuba at least 18 times I am well
aware of prices to Cuba. Even with a discount with Air Canada Vacations
they are way overpriced compared to what is offered by other travel
companies in the Toronto area. Saturdays Toronto Star offers in June,
Tryp Cayo Coco for $525/ AC Vacations $825. Sol Club $569./AC Vacations
$855. Even though a discount may be offered, sometimes NOT using an
airline discount can be less expensive. Phone around. Helen Gordon
Following the death of several members of the Nepalese royal family, the Nepalese government has declared a period of national mourning. A curfew, which may continue indefinitely, is currently in effect and should be strictly respected.
Be prepared for possible travel disruption. Travellers should exercise extreme caution,
avoid large crowds and demonstrations, and be sensitive to the local culture.
If travel plans can't be changed, once in Nepal, ensure you're registered with your
country's Embassy or Consular office.

Subject: TV Special
Melanie Wood, CEO of Mood Productions is researching the lives and
careers of Grant McConachie and Gordon McGregor; the purpose being to
produce a TV special much along the one produced recently on Max Ward.
She is desperately searching for any "clues about McGregor's personal
life"
For anyone "who would have counted themselves a friend"; "Anyone aho
knows about his family";
Melanie knows he didn't children, but did he have any brothers or
sisters? Who was his wife? Did she have any brothers or sisters? Would
any of them have inherited his estate including family photos, and his
memoirs?
The book "Adolescance of An Airline" was taken from his papers
(diary/journal) she looking for the original manuscript.
She is asking for any clues and/or leads
FYI: she has already spoken to and interviewed; Claude Taylor, Clayton
Glen, Ross Smyth and I have suggested several other retirees, however, I thought if a
call went out to your mailing list that perhaps "someone out there"
would be the person/persons she is looking for.
I'm sure she would welcome information and stories about Mr. McConachie
as well from our CAIRE confreres as well
Kindest personal regards Fraser

*** Government recognizes secret Air America pilots
For years, they operated in secret -- civilian pilots who worked for
the CIA on missions they couldn't even discuss with
their families. But on Saturday, 25 years after Air
America dissolved, the government finally recognized
them. The CIA presented a unit citation to the men
Saturday evening. Most people likely have never heard
of Air America, unless they know the 1990 Mel Gibson
movie by the same name. Air America began after World
War II in the 1940s when the Civil Air Transport
commercial airline was started in China. Pilots hauled
relief supplies and evacuated people throughout the
country during China's civil war.

*** Thai PM says Thai Air "Sucks"
Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who
was quoted last month as saying Thai Airways International "sucks,"
said on Monday the airline provided good service and only minor
improvements were needed. The Bangkok Post newspaper last month
quoted Thaksin as saying he would not travel on Thai Airways, the
country's national carrier, were he not a public figure.
"It sucks," he was quoted as saying. The newspaper said Thaksin
also complained that Thai's fares were higher than others and that
it lacked an effective plan for the future.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PIONAIRS 24TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
May 18 - 20 in Calgary, AB
'Some Said It Was The Best Ever !'
Over 400 Pionairs, the best turnout since 1996, got a foot stomping start to
3 days of work and play with a Western Theme Reception Friday night.
"Miss Molly", a local legend on the Calgary entertainment scene, had Pionairs
up line dancing, square dancing and even doing the 'chicken' dance…pretty old chickens!
Saturday morning was the Pionairs' business session with the first order of the
day to officially welcome our Canadian Airlines colleagues into our Airline retiree family by a unanimous vote amending our by-laws to make them eligible for all positions within our organization. This was followed by presentations on
a) membership (we're now over 8200 strong) by Bill Fisher, 1st VP,
b) a Pensions report by Bill Rowe, our Pension and Benefits Rep.
( our fund is now worth $6.26 billion and performed well compared to others)
c) a financial report by Norm Stoddart, Treasurer (a very positive report on our
finances and that Pionair shareholder value should be up again this year)
d) Kay Napolitano, 2nd VP reported that 25% of those attending this years
AGM took tours in and around Calgary…easily a record.
Saville Hambleton, President, reported on two new Pionairs initiatives:
1. An official Pionair Website pionair.ca, for our many new and computer literate
members
2. A Retiree Assistance Program that will focus on our older members who can
get information from local District RAP Coordinators. The RAP coordinators
will provide guidance or coaching on community services available on a wide
range of problems affecting the elderly. In addition, these RAP Coordinators
will assist with tasks that most of us take for granted, like filling out a pass or
registering for a flight!
The highlight of the meeting appeared to be the announcement of the city hosting
our 25th Annual General Meeting in 2002.
Naming Halifax as the host city brought wild applause.
The last official matter on the agenda was to elect a new Executive Board to take
us through to 2003.
With no nominations from the floor, Fraser O'Shaughnessy and his team of Mae Watson, Mary Moore, Ed Storrie and Frank Marando were elected by acclamation . Rounding out Fraser's team will be Bill Rowe who is just starting his second year as Pension & Benefits Rep.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:45 AM
The afternoon was devoted to the USA District Meeting. the two major features
were improved comments on Great West Life's handling of medical claims and the passing of the torch from Art Thrun to the new District Director, Art Suffron.
A plaque was presented to Art Thrun for his leadership of the last 2 1/2 years as Director. The US Pionairs continue to be plagued by the inequities of being billed in US dollars for passes that have only a Canadian dollar tariff figure.
A fantastic Dinner/Dance closed the day for everyone. The music of the 14 piece "Prime Time Big Band" orchestra had Pionairs on the dance floor until 11:00 PM.
A prize from Dargal Interline for a trip for two on the Rocky Mountaineer was won by June Walker and from Interlining Plus the prize was a 7 day Caribbean Cruise for two won by Sheila Freckleton.
On Sunday, Rev. Lee Donahue, District Director for Southern Ontario conducted
a morning all faiths service offering the message that we can all find ourselves in the greatness of God.
The business session for May 20 was the Company's opportunity to bring Pionairs
up to date on pensions, benefits and reduced rate travel. We were fortunate to have 5 Air Canada personnel attend……
Robert Petryk, Director People Services,
Caroline Drouin, Director Pensions and Employees Benefits,
Vicki Benoit, Manager Industry Travel,
Linda Kwoon, Administrative Assistant Industry Travel
Caterina Trotto, Administrative Assistant Archives/Corporate Records.
Mrs. Trottos' 3 day presence at our AGM was proof positive that Air Canada
is serious about maintenance and display of archival material.
VICKI BENOIT
1. There is no proposed date at this time for harmonizing boarding priorities
for AC and CP retirees.
2. Power of Attorney authority for infirm Pionairs is being worked on with more
information in a few weeks.
3. Immigration fines for improperly documented AC personnel, including
Pionairs and travel partners, will have to be paid personally.
4. Select pass agreements with Lufthansa, Swissair, Continental and Alitalia
remain in effect, but travel on British Airways will be discontinued shortly.
5. Partner travel passes (14) in effect until Dec. 31, 2001.
Effective Jan. 2002 that number is reduced to 10.
Star Alliance partner travel for 2002 is 8 passes but Pionair must travel with
partner (limit 2 partners per trip).
6. Service charge deduction backlog is being cleared up.
7. Airport improvement fees must now be collected on pass travel….this will appear
on pension cheque.
8. Pionair widows/widowers still not allowed to use 421 pass document.
9. Employees/Pionairs working or living in other countries must pay for passes in
currency of that country.
10. When traveling both AC and CP on same trip, enter the priority of airline of first
leg, computer handles the rest.
11. Going beyond your partner pass limit will result in a full fare charge for every
excess pass used.
12. A new partner travel brochure will be available soon.
13. Spouses photo ID cards are now discontinued.
Spouses may use their ID card they have now (the old gray and white one)
if it has no expiry date on it. Otherwise, a passport or Drivers license will be
accepted for ID.
14. Access to CICs (travel reference information - formerly DRIs) will be available
soon on the Internet.
15. Anniversary "J" class pass reservations may be booked positive "Y" at anytime.
Computer automatically rebooks to "J" 72 hours prior to flight, subject to
availability.
16. Off line Pionairs should load up on pass blanks when they go through on line
cities.
17. Fedex discount still has bugs, solution is ongoing.
18. Speech recognition system still has problems with callers who have accents…
this is being worked on.
19. For family affaire travel, infants under 2 require validation form even though
they don't pay for a seat.
BOB PETRYK
Looking forward the Company is:
a) Focusing on self service, automation and greater Web access.
b) Exploring 'sector' billing for trips of more than 90 days.
c) Considering instituting payment by credit card instead of payroll deduction.
d) Examining the possibility of Pionairs looking at their billing account (pass charges)
on the Web.
e) Planning to have interline travel agreements on our Employee Website.
CAROLINE DROUIN
HEALTH:
1. Basic plan (no cost to retiree) still administered by great West Life
2. Voluntary plan (enhanced coverage for medical and dental services) is not available
for retirees who opted for basic plan at retirement and is administered by Sun Life.
3. Canadian Airlines retirees ….management retirees only were entitled to post
retirement medical coverage. It was very limited and ceased at age 65.
Other employee groups did not have access to any other company sponsored
coverage. They were however given access to a separate medical plan,
Pacific Blue Cross.
Participation: since 1995 the participation to the Basic plan has decreased 8.7%. New retirees are now joining the Voluntary plan so it has increased participation by 45%.
This now represents 58% of all Air Canada retirees participating in the Voluntary plan.
Financial: In 1995 the Basic plan was paying out approx. $862,000. but we are now paying out $1.5 million ….76% increase. The Voluntary plan payments have increased 132%…from $2.1million to $5 million in the year 2000. The per capita costs on the basic plan has increased by 91% whereas on the Voluntary plan it has increased by 70%. This is because the majority of newly retired employees are joining the Voluntary plan and the age of the basic plan participants is increasing therefore requiring more medical attention. This trend is expected in the future. The Basic plan is not affected by medical inflation as is the Voluntary plan because most provinces provide drugs to older retirees. Therefore our company medical plan does not have the expense of these whereas with the rising cost of drugs, we see a definite increase in these costs for our younger retirees in the Voluntary plan.
4. 58% of AC retirees now in Voluntary Plan
5. Contributing to higher costs for both plans are………
a) higher new drug costs and government shifting of costs
b) increased utilization rate(advertising creating awareness of new drugs)
PENSIONS
1. The pension payroll (Canada..main plus pilots) increased 4% over last year and
now is 11,273 retirees not including Canadian Airlines retirees.
2. Canadian retirees number 4,126 who have a total of 7 plans compared to
Air Canada with 3.
3. Average age of AC retirees is 69.3
4. The main plan paid out $173million in 2000
The pilots plan paid out $54million in 2000
US & UK plans paid out $74million in 2000
5. The adhoc adjustment in Canada was 1.25% and in the US was 2.6%
(covering 2 years)
This annual indexation for all countries cost AC $12million in 2000.
6. To improve the dental coverage in voluntary plan would very likely require an
increase in premiums.
7. Any change in the adhoc (ie 50% to 60% of the CPI) would require approval
by the AC Board of Directors.
8. Increasing the adhoc to full indexation may result in a lower base pension.
9. Voluntary health plan premiums are reviewed annually to take in changes to
Provincial health care funding.
CATERINA TROTTO
Thanks were given to Fraser and Joan Muir for their many volunteer hours put in.
Air Canada is committed to preserving the integrity of Aviation Heritage and sharing it with others. She thanked everyone for their donations to the Archives.
The meeting adjourned at 12:00 Noon.
The Air Canada Banquet on Sunday evening featured Sue Welscheid, Vice President People and a great supporter of the Pionairs. She spoke on the many integration stages that have been successfully completed. The outstanding ones relating to seniority issues with the collective bargaining units are more difficult to achieve. Sue detailed the very aggressive route expansion program the Company has embarked on and the acquisition of Skyservice, a Toronto based non scheduled carrier. This majority ownership position may result in Skyservice operating a low cost Airline operation on behalf of Air Canada if ongoing discussions with ACPA (the airline pilots union) do not come to fruition. Even if Skyservice does not operate this low cost airline, the purchase is worth it by the acquiring of Skyservices corporate jet fleet and very successful business.
Sue concluded by drawing for positive space tickets for 2, good anywhere in Air Canadas' system. The lucky winner was Carol Malec from Winnipeg.
Sue received a great round of applause and was presented with a white Stetson, symbol of the friendly city of Calgary.
Complete details of all business sessions are available in "minutes" form from your District Director upon request.
