Travel alert certain regions in Brazil are plagued by police strike.
Since July 5, police in the Bahia state, which includes Salvador and many resort areas, have been on strike for better wages. The army has been called to action to maintain control, as many shops have been looted and criminal activity has increased. Some businesses are closed. During this time, given the potential for increased criminal activity, exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings.
Travel alert changes to tourist visa rules for travel to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia coming this fall.
Until September 30, Canadians visiting the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia for less than 30 days don't require a tourist visa. A 30-day tourist pass, at a cost of $7 CA, will be issued upon arrival at the border or airport. Canadians whose stay will exceed 30 days still require a tourist visa. Effective October 1, Canadians travelling to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia will again require visas that can be applied for at Yugoslav diplomatic or consular offices.

BA aims for Concorde flights in Sept
British Airways and Air France plan to resume commercial Concorde
flights in September and October respectively, according to the
working group set up to get the supersonic passenger plane flying
again. The Anglo-French Concorde Working Group said on Monday the
plane's manufacturers were working to finalize the conclusions of
tests on the modified plane and hoped to submit their results to
regulators by August 15. "BA is aiming to resume commercial flights
in September, while Air France aims to restart commercial flights
when the next IATA season starts in October," the group said in a
statement after a meeting in London.
Wayward Muffy Is Stowaway Problem for Airline
A wayward cat forced a U.S.
airline to cancel a flight on Thursday by clambering up into
the wheel well of an aircraft and refusing to budge even when
offered a tasty slice of fresh salmon. The gray and white cat
named Muffy broke out of her cage in another airline's baggage
room and darted down the tarmac and clawed her way up into a
Continental Airlines MD-80 jet, forcing 82 passengers off the
plane from Providence to Newark, N.J. After eight hours of
trying to coax and tempt the would-be stowaway down
maintenance crews finally had to remove panels on the bottom
of the wing, near its seam with the body, to pull Muffy out.
She was returned to the other airline and reunited with her
family, a Continental official said.

. With regard to the information for identifying alphas in the Speech Recognition system,
given in NetLetter nr 606, referred to as "the military alphabet", we received the following
clarification from Ace McCool aka Jack Desmarais -
Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc. is not the military alphabet, although our military do use it.
It is the International Civil Aviation Alphabet. Thus it is used all over the world, by
all airlines, though not by all military forces.
(We should have known that, as the military alphabet is - probably -
Arsenal, Bomb, Cannon, Dynamite, Explosive etc - with tongue in cheek eds!)

. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -
A British Airways Concorde made a 3 1/2 hour test flight July 17th taking off from London-Heathrow and returning to RAF Brize Norton. The aircraft route took it out over the Atlantic ocean up towards Iceland before turning around. The airline has strengthened the wiring in the plane's undercarriage, lined the fuel tanks with Kevlar and made other changes meant to prevent fuel leaks. Further test flying will take place during August with the goal of getting the aircraft's Certificate of Airworthiness re-instated by September.
Collingwood Airport Ontario is having its 13th annual "Gathering of the Classics" on August 4th. Last year saw 80 classic aircraft on display from all over Ontario. Gates open at 0900.

. Smilie.
Several years ago while instructing in sailplanes, I took a young boy
for his first flight. I had to fly from the front seat to keep the
weight and balance of the Schweizer 2-33 within the envelope. I found
a weak thermal and racked the glider into a steep 360-degree turn.
Since I was concentrating on milking all the lift I could from the
thermal, I neglected to keep my passenger apprised of what I was doing.
After completing about 20 consecutive 360s, I heard a weak, quivering
voice from the back seat ask, "What's the matter mister, is it stuck?"
. Bob Carson sends us this one -
Two tourists were driving through the lower half of the North
Island of New Zealand, on their way to the Marlborough Sound.
As they were approaching Paraparaumu, they started arguing
about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth
until they stopped for lunch. As they stood at the counter, one
tourist asked the blonde employee, "Before we order, could you
please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce
where we are, very slowly?" The girl leaned over the counter
and said, "Burrrrrrrr, gerrrrrrr, Kiiiiing."

Air Canada and IBM form strategic partnership.
July 20th marks the beginning of a seven-year, $1.4 billion CA strategic agreement between Air Canada and IBM. This new partnership will allow us to e-enable the airline, enhance customer service, and develop future solutions based on a world-leading information technology (IT) infrastructure. As a result of this agreement, Air Canada expects to save approximately $200 million in IT costs over the term of the agreement. This relationship encompasses far more than computer systems management. It's about innovation, pursuing new business opportunities, increasing shareholder value, and improving the overall travel experience of our customers. In addition, IBM will invest in various venture capital and technology projects at Air Canada. (Employee Communications)

. We have another story from Tom Martin, following the one in NetLetter nr 605 -
The only other time I thought I'd had it was when Del Bourgeois and the late Al Turner and I were on our way back from Lima, where we had been negotiating with Aero Peru to provide tech. support for the two L1011s they were leasing - the ones originally built for the California operator with the lounge in the belly. We were on our way back to MIA on an Aero Peru DC8 40 series - ex Air Jamaica - that Aero Peru were still operating and for which we were providing tech services. On take off from Mexico City the Captain had to abort and I remembered our Flt. Ops people weren't thrilled with the AP crew skills. The Captain turned around and restarted his take off while we said a few prayers, but we made it. Lots of memories.

. Experts: Wright Plane Near Miracle
Aviation experts building a flying
replica of the world's first airplane have found the Wright
stuff - in the hands of modern pilots, anyway - is a little
wrong. Orville and Wilbur Wright made four brief flights on
Dec. 17, 1903, marking the first time a manned plane sustained
powered flight. That same day, a gust of wind mangled their
handmade aircraft and it never flew again. "I'd say it was
almost a miracle they were able to fly it," said Jack Cherne
an aeronautical engineer who is chairman of the Wright Flyer
Project, sponsored by the Los Angeles chapter of the American
Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Using that data
they created a computer flight simulator that shows the plane
to be so unstable, it is nearly impossible to fly.
ELECTRIC AIRPLANE TO DEBUT AT OSHKOSH...
The Worcester Gazette recently interviewed Jim Dunn, president of
Advanced Technology Products Corp. Dunn is leading a collaboration
between Advanced Technology Products and a Florida company to create the
world's first electric-powered airplane. An early prototype, to be
powered by batteries and fuel cells, will be debuted at the EAA
AirVenture Oshkosh 2001 Fly-In.
ONE STEP CLOSER TO SOLVING THE EARHART MYSTERY:
According to Space.Com,
recent satellite images seem to reveal the wreckage of an airplane in an
area often suspected as a possible crash location of Amelia Earhart.
The images were taken over Nikumaroro, formerly Gardner Island. All of
this is great news for an expedition scheduled to leave Los Angeles on
August 24. The group's earlier expeditions to the island have revealed
some artifacts believed by some to be evidence of the doomed flight.

Make sure you have proper travel documentation before you leave home.
Air Canada has recently been assessed an increasing number of immigration fines for individuals, including active and retired employees, family members, widows/widowers, and travel partners, travelling without appropriate travel documents. Our top four list of countries and their fines per person in Canadian dollar equivalents are Australia $4,000, England $4,300, Brazil $3,600, and China $2,200. These fines are passed on to the active employee, retiree or other eligible pass holder whenever an infraction involving him, a family member, or travel partner occurs. To avoid these unnecessary fines, make sure you, your family members, and travel partners have the required travel documents, such as visas and passports, for all destinations, including potential stops along the way.

Come join us for a delicious buffet luncheon and visit to the National Aviation
Museum for an all-inclusive price of $25.00.
The National Aviation Museum is one of the finest aviation museums in the
world. Over 120 aircraft chronicle the ancient dream of flight and the significant
part played by Canadians in the development of aviation. Major themes of
aeronautical history are reflected the efforts of pioneering individuals to build
and fly their own aircraft, the many Canadians who flew the legendary machines
of the two great conflicts of the last century, the birth of air transport, and
examples of jet engine technology as well as the uniquely Canadian
experience of bush flying, and the phenomenal growth of the aviation industry in
Canada over the past fifty years
The museum will be closed to the general public on this day, but the large well-stocked
Gift Shop will be open for the Pionairs to shop. The parking is plentiful
and free. The museum will open at 10:00 o’clock and close at 16:00 with the

. Tom Martin sends us this story -
The Netletters often bring back memories for me and the combination of 598 about Air Ontario taking over the Cleveland - Toronto route and 602 about the thunderstorm over Denver reminded me that a good many years ago John Carruthers and I, representing TCA (I said it was years ago) and two men from Canadair had been to the B.F. Goodrich Brake & Wheel Plant in Akron to look at what they described as a new product, a liquid cooled brake. We were on our way home on a DC3 out of Cleveland bound for Toronto. The weather was rainy and overcast and the airplane was bouncing so we had our seat belts on. I was seated by the front bulkhead on the single seat side and the Stewardess was leaning over to offer me a cool drink when BANG - the lights went out and the nose of the airplane seemed to be at about one o'clock. The Stewardess literally was thrown to the back and I braced my feet on the bulkhead and thought this is it - we've had it. However the crew got the airplane back level and the Captain announced we'd had a lightning strike. The valiant Stew then came to each of us to make sure we were OK, but her knees were scraped and bleeding and her stockings ripped. When we landed at YYZ, we talked to the Captain who said he had been told not to land because of the weather whereupon he had said there is no way I'm going back across Lake Ontario. John and I tried to convince the Canadair men to join us on "a great big Connie" headed for YUL, but they decided to take the overnight train instead. We carried on, sitting on the bunks up front, a little edgy, but we made it safe and sound

Original plans called for Boeing 777s to replace the A340s this coming September, but this has been deferred until March 2002. A senior SIA official said that three recent inflight engine shutdowns on the 777 prompted the airline to delay replacing the A340 with the 777 on the route.

and conditions will match those of the New York-to-London run, an
airline spokesman said. The plane will fly out over the Atlantic
Ocean, turn around southwest of Iceland, and return to a Royal
Air Force base in Oxfordshire, according to British Airways.
Detroit-Bound Girl Ends Up In Florida
An 11-year-old girl made it home to Detroit, although
it took her 21 hours to fly from Los Angeles. Aunnalise Woods
boarded a flight in Los Angeles Saturday morning to come visit
her father. When she changed planes in Phoenix, Woods said that
an airline chaperone told her to board the wrong flight, so she
wound up in Orlando instead of Detroit. Her father showed up at
Metro Airport, expecting her flight to arrive at 6:40 p.m.
Saturday. Woods didn't arrive until many hours after that.
America West Airlines gave the family a $400 voucher for their
inconvenience. However, the family said that they will be
contacting an attorney.

A Navy officer was cutting through the crew's quarters of his carrier
one day and happened upon a sailor reading a magazine with his feet up
on the small table in front of him.
"Sailor! Do you put your feet up on the furniture at home?" the
officer demanded.
"No, sir, but it's not the same thing, is it?"
"What do you mean, 'not the same'?"
"Well, we don't land airplanes on our roof at home either!"

Yoko Ono, the widow of murdered Beatle John
Lennon, visited the airport named for her late husband Monday and
said he would have been "very proud." "Thank you very, very much for
remembering John and for loving John," Ono said as she introduced
the new logo for Liverpool John Lennon Airport. "John always
reminded of us of the sense of fun in life. I hope the airport will
send a great message to all corners of the world. As John said,
there is no hell below us, above us only skies." The airport's new
logo includes a Lennon self-portrait and the printed line "Above us

Harrison Ford finds missing Boy Scout
Harrison Ford starred in a search-and-rescue
sequel for a missing Boy Scout in a forest just south of Yellowstone
National Park. The actor, a part-time Jackson resident who offers
his flying skills and helicopter for rescue missions, joined a
search for a missing Utah Boy Scout who had wandered off a trail
Monday and spent a cold night alone in the secluded forest, said the
Teton County Sheriff's Office in Wyoming. After two hours of flying,
Ford and another searcher found 13-year-old Cody Clawson, clad in a
T-shirt, shorts and sandals, about 10 miles from a Boy Scout camp at
8:30 a.m. Tuesday. He landed nearby to whisk the soggy, cold, tired
and hungry scout to safety. Clawson survived the rainy night by
taking cover under a rock outcropping.

*** Disassembled spy plane in Ga.
A cargo plane carrying the fuselage and other
salvageable parts of a Navy spy plane arrived at Dobbins Air Reserve
Base on Thursday, more than three months after the surveillance
plane made an emergency landing on China's Hainan island. Lockheed
Martin Corp. has selected a P-3 Orion plane - nearly identical to
the damaged spy plane - as a "donor" for wings and other parts
needed for repairs, a company spokesman said. Lockheed Martin
manufactured the $80 million spy plane and has a repair facility
nearby. The EP-3E, loaded with sophisticated electronic surveillance
equipment, made an emergency landing April 1 on Hainan island after
colliding with a Chinese fighter jet sent to intercept it over the
South China Sea. The collision and China's 11-day detention of the
U.S. crew, caused the worst tensions between Beijing and Washington
since the bombing of China's embassy in Yugoslavia.

Cherry, who took over the helm of Aeroports de Montreal in mid-June, said
he's just settling in to his new job and expects "to stay the course" for

Singapore, plans to meet Singapore Airlines chief executive Cheong
Choong Kong later Wednesday to discuss a possible deal. Singapore
Airlines has not specified the size of the stake it is seeking
saying only that it wants to increase it significantly. Air New

During the heat of the space race in the 1960's, the US National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA), decided it needed a ball point pen to write
with in the zero gravity confines of its space capsules. After considerable research
and development, the Astronaut Pen was developed at a cost of about $1 million.
The pen worked and also enjoyed some modest success as a novelty item back
here on earth.
The Soviet Union, faced with the same problem, used a pencil.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: A UPS employee became self-loading cargo
when he took a nap onboard a UPS 747 bound for the Far East. The
Anchorage-based cargo handler woke up when the jet was over the Pacific
Ocean -- bound for Hong Kong. It was too late (read: expensive) for the
captain to turn the jumbo around, so the employee had to make himself
comfortable for the remainder of the flight. UPS officials contacted
government representatives in both China and Korea (the jet's next
scheduled stop) to warn them of the undocumented "package" onboard and a
UPS representative noted that "our human resources and security people
are scheduled to sit down and talk with him." Whatever the outcome, it
seems likely that the handler won't be getting any frequent flyer miles
out of the deal.

From: Murielle St-Germain <
Air Lingus Flight 101 was flying from Heathrow to Dublin one night,
with Paddy the Pilot, and Shamus the co-pilot. As they approached Dublin
airport, they looked out the front window.
"B'jeesus," said Paddy, "Will ye look at how short dat runway is."
"You're not kiddin, Paddy," replied Shamus.
"Dis is gonna be one a' de trickiest landings you're ever gonna see,"
said Paddy.
"You're not kiddin, Paddy," replied Shamus.
"Right, Shamus, when I give de signal, you put de engines in reverse,"
said Paddy.
"Right, I'll be doing dat," replied Shamus.
"And den ye put de flaps down straight away," said Paddy.
"Right, I'll be doing dat," replied Shamus.
"And den ye stamp on dem brakes as hard as ye can," said Paddy.
"Right, I'll be doing dat," replied Shamus.
"And den ye pray to de Mother Mary with all a' your soul," said Paddy.
"I be doing dat already," replied Shamus.
So they approached the runway with Paddy and Shamus full of nerves and
sweaty palms. As soon as the wheels hit the ground, Shamus put the
engines in reverse, put the flaps down, stamped on the brakes and prayed to
Mother Mary with all of his soul. Amidst roaring engines, squealing of tires
and lots of smoke, the plane screeched to a halt centimetres from the end of
the runway, much to the relief of Paddy and Shamus and everyone on
board.
As they sat in the cockpit regaining their composure, Paddy looked out
the front window and said to Shamus, "Dat has gotta be de shortest runway
I have EVER seen in me whole life. Shamus looked out the side window
and replied, "Yeah Paddy, but look how wide it is."
Sent in by Jim McKeachie" <
The passengers were leaving the plane after landing, and one smiling, satisfied passenger paused to congratulate the flight attendant. "Stewardess," he said happily, "I want to compliment you and the crew and especially the captain for getting here right on time. It's not often that an airline gets to where it's going exactly when they claim it will. I'm going to call your home office and let them know how pleased I am." "Why, thank you, sir," the flight attendant answered, "but I think you should know--this is yesterday's flight."
