Dan Morey recommends that everyone check their pay statements very
carefully, obviously there seems to be some confusion in addition to backlog as
he is being charged for a trip he never took and has asked for more details.

Have you received a letter introducing you to Speech Recognition and the
Employee Travel Website? By now, active and retired self-ticketing Air Canada
and former Canadian Airlines employees should have received a letter from
Robert Petryk, Director, People Services, outlining enhancements made to these
innovative products. With Personal Identification Number (PIN) in hand, you can
click a mouse from any location with Internet access or dial a toll free number
from anywhere in North America. You can use Speech Recognition to make travel
listings for yourself and eligible family members in the language of your
choice. Partner travel can be listed with the ETW only. If you haven't yet
received this letter, please contact the Employee Call Centre at (800) 413-1113
and provide your name and employee numberthe agent will check your Card Holder
Information Profile (CHIP) to determine if you're entitled to use this
technology and will provide a PIN accordingly.
From Employee Communications -
Halifax welcomes self-service Express Check-in kiosks. Today, customers
travelling through Halifax International Airport will be able to check-in with
one of eight self-service Express Check-in kiosks near the Domestic check-in
area. This addition provides customers with access to this efficient and
innovative product in eight key cities in Canada, bringing the total number of
kiosks to 137. Reminder: All active and retired employees and pass-eligible
travellers must use the kiosks to check in, where available. Effective
September 1, check-in service at the counters will no longer be permitted for
employees
and pass-eligible travellers at stations with kiosks. Exceptions, such as
individuals who don't have an Air Canada employee ID/travel card, major credit
card, or Aeroplan or Star Alliance? Frequent flyer card will be served at the
check-in counter. Each kiosk station has a dedicated baggage area,
identified as ?Express Baggage Drop-off.?
Testing! Testing! Coloured boarding cards for self-service Express check-in
kiosk users. Effective today, for approximately six weeks, individuals
using the
kiosks will receive a fluorescent green boarding card. The coloured cards were
designed to alert gate agents that customers, including pass-eligible
travellers, checked in using the kiosk and that documents may need to be
verified or alerts such as ?CERT, APIS, FEE, FAM, or TKV? actioned.
The Employee web site travel.aircanada.ca, under Publications, has a booklet
called "Partner Travel Guide" which can be downloaded and printed for handing
to anyone you give a partner pass to, outlining how to use the privilege.

PARIS (AP) -- The supersonic Concorde, outfitted with tougher tires and
armoured fuel tanks, is likely to get approval to fly before the end of
the month, just over a year after the fleet was grounded following a
deadly crash. Certificates allowing the elite needle-nosed plane to return
to the skies will be restored simultaneously by British and French
authorities "probably before the end of August 2001," said a statement
issued at the close of a meeting Monday by a group of British and French
officials. British Airways has said it hopes to resume commercial flights
in late summer, Air France by autumn.
Air Canada hires ex-WestJet chief

*** Zeppelin returns to the skies
CNN BERLIN, Germany -- A Zeppelin has taken to the skies again nearly
70 years after the last fatal cross-Atlantic journey by one of the
airships. The Zeppelin will take passengers on regular hour-long
cruises across Lake Constance near the Swiss border, the site of
the first airship flight a century ago in 1900. Footage of the
Hindenburg Zeppelin catching fire as it approached the landing
strip at Lakehurst, New Jersey, in 1937, killing 35 of the 96 on
board, has not dimmed the enthusiasm for the mode of transport.

A Flight Attendant for a major airline watched a passenger
overloaded with bags attempting to stuff his belongings in the
overhead bin. When the passenger was informed that he would have to
check the oversized luggage, he became very frustrated.
"When I fly other airlines," he said irritably, "I don't have this
problem." The Flight Attendant smiled and replied, "When you fly
other airlines, I don't have this problem either."

. Need to know.
Employee Travel inform us that they are still negotiating with FedEx for a
discount, we shall inform you if and when this happens.
In NetLetter nr 606 July 26th we printed this from Employee Communications
-
Setting the record straight Air Canada employees don't receive an annual
free trip pass.
We can't establish how, when, or where this story began, and we want to put
an end to its perpetual motion. Active and retired Air Canada employees
don't receive an annual trip pass with service charges waived as part of
their pass allotment. (Employee Communications)
Lo and behold we find this statement dated Aug 1st -
: Management does not have to pay service charges for personal travel from
September 1, 2001 - September 1, 2002 because of the salary reduction. Does
this include taxes? Does it include my new C1 priority?
A: This question has to be answered in two parts. Taxes: In some cases taxes
will no longer apply, but there will be exceptions. For travel in Canada, there
will be no GST, QST or HST (except on AIFs). However, some countries will
charge taxes and these must be paid by the employee (e.g., for transborder
travel the U.S. Immigration Fee will apply). More information on affected taxes
will be available in the coming weeks. C1/J10 priority: We do not plan to
include the waiving of service charges on this new priority since it is a
four-month type trial.
(We suppose the denial statement is right in part, the message reads
".... Setting the record straight Air Canada employees don't receive an annual
free trip pass." the word "an" implies one. Also "Active and retired Air Canada
employees don't receive an annual trip pass with service charges waived as part
of
their pass allotment." - only the active employees NOT retirees. - eds)
Travelling with an infant? Here is some information for you from Employee
Travel -
If the infant is travelling on a (T421) pass there is a box for
North-American travel.
For international travel, a separate employee ticket is required for the
infant where
the box for infant would be ticked and the birthdate completed in the
appropriate section.
If the infant does not occupy a seat, a refund of the service charge is
applicable.
FOR T421 INFANT - NO PROOF IS NECESSARY AS THE INFANT WILL NOT BE
CHARGED UNLESS THERE IS A SEAT NUMBER ON THE INFANT'S FLIGHT COUPON
WRITTEN IN BY THE CHECK-IN AGENT.
A ticket is required for the infant on international flights only.
On the T423 Partner/Parent pass, there is no such procedure as to "tick"
infant. Each partner requires a partner ticket, regardless of age.
If the infant does not occupy a seat and if the infant is the travelling
partner's own infant,
the service charge will be refunded on request.
2 YEARS OF AGE IS THE LIMITATION. THE PARTNER ALLOTMENT WILL BE
REINSTATED.
A LETTER FROM THE EMPLOYEE EXPLAINING THE REFUND REQUEST AND REINSTATEMENT OF
THE PARTNER TICKET ALONG WITH COPY OF PENSION
STATEMENT INDICATING THE DEDUCTION MADE AND BIRTH CERTIFICATE OF
THE INFANT IS REQUIRED.

Please be aware that the numerous emails we have been receiving with regard
to the new C1 priority have been passed on to the Pionair Executive who are
actively following this situation on behalf of the Pionairs, and have made the
position of all retirees abundently clear, but would encourage you all to send

For those of you wondering how the credit card would work in the kiosks for
check-in,
this is an explanation -
The kiosk system is set up to read magnetic stripes that appear
on major credit cards for example (Visa, MasterCard, American Express).
The system does a name search, matches the name on the credit card with the
name on the locator/PNR, and produces a boarding card.
. From Employee Communications -
Travel billing back to normal. In June, we told you about a backlog of trip
pass charges that dated to last October, and that Payrolls was working
diligently to
clear that backlog by the end of August. We're pleased to report that the
backlog of personal travel billings has now been cleared up, and Payrolls is
back to a normal 60 to 90 day billing cycle. With personal travel billing back
to normal, it's a good time to urge everyone to keep track of personal passes
used, as well as those you give to friends and family. Often, an
employee/retiree will
forget they gave a pass out and be surprised when the billing comes through. By
the way, if you find an error please contact your local People Services
representative or Employee Travel (formerly Industry Travel).

I'm a member of the Air Canada Emergency Response Team. In the event of an
AC accident we respond to assist the families of the passengers. We receive
a full day training every year on how to deal with these persons. We are all
volunteers and dedicated to assist our airline and ALSO our partner
airlines. There are 1400 of us, yes that's fourteen hundred, AND 99% are
retired .
Maybe Mr. Milton should be reminded of the fact that it's THE RETIRED who do
this work.
Maybe we should all go on strike!!!!! That might get his attention.

. Our chief pilot, Vesta, sends this from the flight deck -
Solar craft goes for altitude record
- A giant solar-powered flying wing has begun an attempt
to reach a higher altitude than any non-rocket-powered aircraft.
The American space agency Nasa launched the Helios aircraft
from Barking Sands on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, after two
previous attempts had been delayed by bad weather. The aim of
the flight is to get the 74 metre-wide-wing to 100,000 feet
(30,000 metres) - three times higher than any commercial jet.
FOSSETT ABANDONS HOT-AIR BALLOON JOURNEY
Bad weather has snuffed out U.S. millionaire Steve Fossett's dream of
being the first person to sail alone around the world in a hot-air
balloon.
America's multi-billion-dollar stealth bombers
could be rendered obsolete by a British invention that uses existing
mobile telephone masts to detect and track aircraft that were
previously invisible to radar. US stealth fighters and bombers such
as the F117, B1 and B2 played key roles in the Gulf and Kosovan wars
as they are almost impossible to detect using conventional radar.
However, the ease with which the mobile telephone mast system
developed at a laboratory in Hampshire - can be used to detect the
aircraft has greatly concerned the military. The head of project
said: "I cannot comment in detail because it is a classified matter
but let's say the US military is very interested."

. Star Alliance news -
First Star Alliance™ branded lounge opens at Zurich International Airport. Star
Alliance yesterday opened its first alliance branded airport lounge at Zurich
International Airport. The 6,900 square-foot facility will be the prototype for
future Star lounges that are planned to open at several airports, including
Brussels, Buenos Aires, Manila and Los Angeles.
From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn.
Lufthansa are cutting back on their winter schedules worldwide by dropping
service to Rio de Janeiro, Bogota, and Tashkent. They will also operate smaller
aircraft on some of their trans-atlantic routes such as Frankfurt-Vancouver
which will become an A340-300 instead of the current mix of 747s and A340s.

With regard to the use of kiosks for checking in as mentioned in the last
NetLetter, the following should also have been mentioned -
The wonder of the kiosks is that we can and must use them to check in with
carry-on or checked baggage. Designated kiosk drop-off counters are located
near the kiosks, to make checking luggage easier.
Norman S. Bindon sends this information which points out the advantages of
using the kiosks -
The procedure is to use the kiosk and then give your bags to the
agent at the special express check in desk just beyond the kiosks. On a
recent flight the check in line snaked back and forth four times and then
ran from domestic check-in to the other end of terminal 2 at YYZ. My check
in took 30 seconds because no one was using the kiosks. I assume about 90%
of those in line could have.
The following was issued to the readership of RAPCAN (Retired Airline Pilots
of Canada)
penned by Duane Frerichs, reprinted here to give a wider readership of this
most
importatnet issue.
Subject: Pionairs Membership
Ladies & Gentlemen:
The Pionairs are the official retiree representatives and spokesmen with
Air Canada regarding Pension, Travel Benefits, etc.
The C1/J10 travel pass issue has highlighted, and emphasized, the need for
the Pionairs to speak for the interests of the retiree group with a strong
voice, and numbers count. At the present time about 8700 out of 13 - 14,000
Air Canada retirees are members of the Pionairs.
I am enclosing a Pionair Membership application and would encourage all
retirees, AC and CDN, who haven't already joined the Pionairs to do so. I
think you will find the annual membership fee, money well spent.
C1/Y10 Update:
I have rx'd a number of BCCs from our membership to Susan Welscheid
yesterday. Keep them coming!!!! At the end of the day, whether we are
successful or not in overturning this policy, I'd like to be able to know
that we gave it our best effort.
It appears that Air Canada has two standard form replies to our e-mails.
Don't worry about their reply, it's the number and quality of your letters
and e-mails that will count.
I've just received the following, it's encouraging that the retirees are
not the only ones unhappy with the C1?Y10 for active employees only.
The CEC is the Air Canada "Common Employer Council". They announced
the following through the IAM International Association of Machinists
on August 10, 2001.
"The CEC unanimously passed a motion calling on Air Canada to amend
its recent changes to Employee Travel. Although we agree with the
application of a common entry date which credits periods of layoff for
boarding priority, we are opposed to the new "type trial" C1/J10 pass
concept. This is the scheme whereby active employees can "buy" the
right to exercise super seniority over senior colleagues when
boarding an aircraft for leisure travel. The company will sell an
active member a C1 boarding priority for a fee of $60.00 to $160.00.
In effect this is nothing more than a cash grab that will see members
ante up hundreds of additional dollars when airport improvement and
immigration fees are added. All other employees utilizing the (also
increased) $25.00 to $55.00 C2 passes, will be subject to being bumped
by C1 purchasers, regardless of seniority. Even worse, this proposal
excludes all retired members from participation. We will now attempt
to change this ill-conceived policy to one that benefits all members."
Thank you,
Duane

Subject: Flight Tracking
Wondered if this website may be of interest to some of your readers.
http://www.biztravel.com
If you know someone travelling by air, you can go to the website - click
on Flight Tracker, under traveler Toolkit - it's about halfway down the
page on left of the main text body.
You can select any airline, put in flight number and it will track the
stats for the flight in progress - it shows a little map of the country
and the plane moves across the screen so you can see where it is - then
it shows the altitude, the speed and other stuff too!!
Only major Canadian airports are currently listed - other info also
that's available are lowest fares between city pairs etc.
A friend of ours was enroute YVR-YYZ the other day, when it was about 30
mins out of YYZ it was time to leave home & pick them up at Pearson -
fun - fun - fun.

. Re the story on the North Star aircraft -
A friend of mine related the following story to your co-pilot Terry -
They were flying off the coast of Labrador with a trailing magnetometer,
which was used to map the ocean floor contours to check movement. On one
occasion, they were unable to retract the drone prior to landing. They alerted
St. Hubert airfield, who arranged for all traffic to be stopped, including
vehicles on the road at the end of the runway. The North Star
finally landed with the drone trailing behind it. My friend was looking out of
the side window to observe the antics of the drone, and notice the open mouths
of the astonished members of the public when, after the aircraft had passed
them, they saw the drone chasing after it.

From Employee Communications -
C1/J10 boarding priority privilegewhy isn't it available to everyone across
the Air Canada network?
A number of people have asked why the C1/J10 boarding priority is only
available to active
Air Canada employees. This once a year, higher boarding priority privilege will
be available on a trial basis from September 1-January 11, 2002. We opted to do
this on a trial basis to allow the Employee Travel and Call Centre teams to
evaluate its use and acceptance by employees and impact on the operation. Put
simply, offering it to active Air Canada employees, spouses, and eligible
dependants provides a reasonable sample of potential users to determine future
policy decisions. Due to capacity issues and limited number of business class
seats in the Air Canada Regional network, the Regionals have elected not to
participate in the program and will review the results of the trial.

As you are aware this C1/J10 trial represents a major and drastic change in
Air Canada's Travel Pass Policy, which if implemented, will have long
lasting and a very detrimental effect on retirees.
Air Canada has stated that it will review all aspects, including the
feedback - both positive and negative - from employees before implementing
this policy. The following is a copy of an e-mail I sent August 8. Whether
you agree or disagree with my comments, I strongly suggest that each of
you, in your own words and in your own way, advise the Company your
thoughts on this issue, before it becomes policy.

Subject: C1/J10 Pass Trial for Active Employees
Cc:
Dear Mr. Petryk and Ms. Welscheid:
I am advising you of my strong objections, not only to the possible
implementation of C1/J10 passes for active employees only, but for even
considering a trial period.
I'm told that this new, enhanced privilege was not requested by any
individual but was a decision as part of Air Canada's ongoing review of the
privileges enjoyed by our employees and retirees; that some carriers do not
always offer exactly the same programs to active and retired employees; and
that Air Canada will review all aspects, including the feedback - both
positive and negative - from employees before implementing this policy.
It is my opinion that Air Canada's policy of treating all of it's employees
fairly and equitably regarding travel pass privileges, is a perfect example
of what made Air Canada stand out, and set an example to other carriers
that discriminate and do not always offer exactly the same travel pass
privileges to active and retired employees
Yes, I understand that it has always been and continues to be the
prerogative of the
corporation to make changes to the pass policy, but I ask you, WHAT IS
WRONG WITH OUR PRESENT PASS SYSTEM?
Up until now, it has always been Air Canada's policy to treat all of it's
employees, active and retired, fairly and equitably, recognizing the fact
that each and every employee made a contribution to the success of Air
Canada, no matter what his job or pay scale. I believe that everyone
considers this fair and that it has worked extremely well. Why would you
want to change this policy now, when Air Canada is in turmoil and employee
morale is in a nose dive and at an all time low?
Introduction of your proposed C1/J10 pass entitlement for active employees
only, not only discriminates against the retired employee, (even though you
insist this is not so) it initiates a policy where the less skilled and
financially disadvantaged employee ( both active and retired) is placed at
a great disadvantage in exercising his travel privileges.
Therefore I am requesting
1. The our present, fair, equitable and well functioning pass system remain
unchanged, or
2. That if Air Canada policy makers feel it is absolutely essential that
C1/J10 passes must be introduced on a limited basis, that it apply to
all Air Canada employees, both active and retired.
Thank you for your time and attention,
Duane Frerichs - 30292

In NetLetter nr 611 we advised you that effective Sept 1st, standby staff
and retirees must use the kiosks to check in.
Diane Carignan - editor of Horizons, advises that the stations equipped with
kiosks at this time are Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto,
Ottawa, and Montreal.
To encourage pass-eligible travellers who don't have an employee ID/travel card
(i.e. travel partners, eligible family members), a credit card with magnetic
stripe also does the trick.
Those with luggage to check will still have to check in with an agent.

. George Brien sends us this message -
Ezine 609 re North Shore startup in 1955 brought back some memories for me as
related below-
In Dec. 1955 , I was based in YFC with a title called "Regional Spare
Operations Agent", and when Station Manager
Wils Himmelman called me into the office and slowly took his pipe out of his
mouth, I knew it was time to get my bags packed .
Regional Spare was another way of saying "where we need you, we'll send you"
TCA had just traded off Canada- Mexico City routes with CPA in return for DC3
routes in Quebec YUL/YQB/YBG/YZV and also
YUL/YVO/YUY/YYB/YXR/YYZ and I believe they threw in YQA(Muskoka) as a
bonus.!!!!
My assignment was to YBG,(Bagotville) , a RCAF base in the Kingdom of Saguenay
and the job description was a bit vague but to assist in training and setup of
the new station. One of the CPA agents remained and transferred to TCA and we
were joined
by new recuits Dennis Kerwin and Jock Vernier from YUL who would be trained as
Operations Agents.
The new station Manager was Gus Vanesse, an ex Bush Pilot and then Assistant
Flight Dispatcher with TCA/YUL
The Terminal building looked more like a large two story house than an Airport
Terminal, even more so because the ex CPA agent along with his wife and
children lived on the second floor which made it convienent for us as she
provided lunch for us at noon.
We all stayed at the Chicoutimi Hotel and since Gus had the only car, he
provided the ground transportation for us all.
I was joined by Operations Agent Earl Young from Stephenville and we worked the
8hr x 7day shift for the length of the tour.
( Our union was not quite as rigid in those days but we did enjoy a great per
diem).
Most of our duties consisted in training the new recuits on procedures etc
working on the joband since Earl and I were limited in our knowledge of the
French language, we had to leave the check in procedures to the ex CPA chap and
handle the radio/tely comms along with weight and balance.
At the time we were running North Stars on the route YUL/YQB/YZV and Stn Mgr
Gus, as an ex dispatcher, was always trying to make up time on the station
stop. One day we went all out and had the passengers/bgge off . reloaded and
flight dispatched in 6 mins and that was the highlight of the month for Gus and
he got it out of his system , and we went back to normal work pace.<g>
As Xmas got nearer, I was beginning to worry about getting home. Working 7 day
weeks built up some time off so on Dec 23 I got the OK to leave and caught the
last seat on the flt deck and made it home for Xmas.
I thought that was the end of the YBG experience but I ended up going back in
Jan/56 for another 6 weeks. The people and the team spirit in those days was a
great motivator to get things done and altho it was about 45 years ago, I can
still recall the great guys we had to work with up there.

Last of the Spitfires grounded in style
The last Spitfire ever built is to go on display
in a giant museum hall at Duxford, the Cambridgeshire base where
one of the most famous planes in British aviation history came
into service in 1938. A heritage lottery grant of £9m and a £5m
grant from BAE Systems, towards the £19.3m project, will be
announced today. The grant comes as part of a raft of awards
being given to projects around the country, with the National
History Museum emerging as one of the major beneficiaries.
Further Concorde test flight
Concorde has taken to the skies again in the latest of a
series of test flights. A British Airways Concorde took off from
London's Heathrow airport on Tuesday morning for a 90-minute crew
refresher flight to Shannon airport in western Ireland. The trip
which involved a 30-minute section at twice the speed of sound, is
part of numerous tests which are being carried out in preparation
for Concorde's return to passenger services in September. Since the
accident BA's seven Concorde and Air France's remaining five have
been fitted with new tougher tyres and special bullet-proof fuel
tank linings at a cost of £17m. Tuesday's supersonic test flight
under the command of BA's chief Concorde pilot, Captain Mike
Bannister, follows two successful verification flights by the same
plane into the Atlantic last month.

Air Canada at Vancouver put an 8-year old girl on a flight to Whitehorse

her at the airport in Fort St. John BC(YXJ)! The girl had to be put back on the
same plane and flown from Whitehorse back to Vancouver, then flown on another
aircraft to Fort St. John. The girl flew approximately 6500km,s about the same
as Vancouver to Cartegena Columbia in South America!

. Smilie.
More from Murielle St-Germain
The following are actual stories provided by travel agents:
I had someone ask for an aisle seat on the plane so that their hair
wouldn't get messed up by being near the window.
A client called in inquiring about a package to Hawaii. After going
over all the cost info, she asked "Would it be cheaper to fly to
California and then take the train to Hawaii?"
I got a call from a woman who wanted to go to Capetown. I started to
explain the length of the flight and the passport information when she
interrupted me with "I'm not trying to make you look stupid, but
Capetown is in Massachusetts." Without trying to make her look stupid, I
calmly explained, "Capecod is in Massachusetts, Capetown is in Africa."
Her response...click.
