. Need to know.
Bill Rowe sends this reminedr -
YWG is still having problems with incorrect billings and considerable
backlog. Therefore everyone should keep track of all passes especially
Buddy Passes retaining coupon # or the receipt portion of the pass ticket
for their records. Remember for every airport that charges a fee (exception
is YVR and YUL were you must pay at departure time) will be automatically
added to the pass charge. At YYZ Personal Passes are exempt but Partner
Passes are charged.
Also ensure your printing is clear and distinct.....use ball-point pen
only.....many passes being received that are hard to read because of poor
printing of details by the pass-holder.
Best regards Bill Rowe Pionairs Pension & Benefits Rep.
Edie Etheridge in LHR sends this information -
Instances have occurred when friends travelling alone on partner passes
have no return space listings. This is due to the fact that the sponsor has
not made any return listing, possibly due to the fact the partner is not
sure of their plans. After the outward trip is made, the PNR is deleted
after 24 hours as there is no other requirement. The lack of a listing for
the inward trip puts an uneccessary stress on both the partner and check-in
staff. Although the sponsor initiates a listing using their pin number, the
partner is able to adjust any listing by contacting reservations and
quoting the reservation number. So even if the partner is unsure of their
return travel plans, a listing should be made, therefor a PNR will exist
and can be adjusted as necessary on or before the date the listing is made for.
.Claude Constantineau sent us this query -
From my pay cheques when I have some passes listed with the charges, it
seems that the date of the ticket or pass which is imprinted when you print
the pass with the card is the date used on the paycheque.
I find this confusing since as a retiree, I usually print several passes
when I am at an airport and when the charges are deducted, the date of the
ticket and the travel date are two very different things. I t would seem to
me that the outbound travel date is the date that should be shown; I just
hope that Industry Travel is going to use the outbound travel date in the
counting of the allotment and not the date of the pass.
Secondl;y, the format of the date is confusing; in Canada we use day/month,
on the cheque entries, they use the american way of month/day could they
not specify the month in plain letter ? Claude
Constantineau
Air Canada payrolls have advised us -
The travel date shown is actual travel dates picked up from the flight
envelopes at time of scanning.
The date shown on the paystatements is the date format that is the
Air Canada
standard effective in 1999.
All Air Canada departments are required to comply with this
standard.

From: Edward Tierney
Subject: First 707 at Dorval Airport.
"Where's them there propellers then ?" Casting the mind back some years
sometimes brings on a grin or two. This particular grin raised by a comical
sequence imposed by bad weather as is so often the case.
These were the days when the Connie, great airplane in its time, was about
to face eventual relegation. All of this though was beyond the ken of yours
truly who only reads the Beano pictures and slowly so.
ULX. A bright wintry day. Ramp line maintenance equipment condition at a
low ebb. Half the units undergoing shop repair, depleting mobility for
everyone. Empty Hangar with myself concentrating on two swinging feet as I
sat glued to a workbench. With all the guys out working, wherever.
Contemplations ended as the Crew Chief wheels back into the hangar with.
"Throw your tools in the back (of the jeep) and come on!" Sliding in beside
him......Sheasgreen says....."This ones unusual, we've to meet Air France.
Its one of the new jets diverted from New York" Myself....."What? Gosh,
what do we know about jets....what if I run into trouble?" (STANDARD TCA
REPLY) "Sure if you need help we'll get help to you" Mollified is the word
for it but on arrival at the transat terminal as I step out of the jeep
with my tools... Whirrrr! and Jimmies away, leaving me without any form of
radio contact. Aware of this, strolled into the Air France office to ask
for the necessary check sheet. Being handed a Connie check sheet, asked for
a 707 one. Answer..."None, just work off that sheet as best you can"
Situation. No aircraft in the transat area only an uneasy silence. Having
no idea what a 707 even looked like became aware of the approach of a
circling visitor. Down it came clearly in focus but with the strangest
sounds. (No cropduster this). Taxied in and parked, the ground handlers now
trying to manoeuvre standard ramp equipment to service this overgrown
species with some difficulty. As the passengers deplaned I began a tour
around, hopefully looking intelligent and up to the job. Later, as start up
approached took up the standard "standby position" suitably attired with
red cap and badge........when dreaded thoughts struck me.... The what ifs?
Surreptiously increased my distance from the plane kept the usual weather
eye open for...well whatever. Then of course as engine No 2 started up I
immediately was struck by the absence of information picked up by a
quickening propeller or the puff of smoke and ragged roars. But comforted
by the nonchalance of the start up crew easy going activities when I
noticed a crack in the decorum. On spotting the lead ground crew guy
displaying agitated movements then turning towards me with a beckoning arm.
Handing me his communication headset I then heard instructions in French.
Gesticulating ..No comprendo... reached the headset back to be told "The
Captain wants you to open No 4 engine" At that the engines were shut down.
But what a dilemma. Ok I knew where No 4 engine was but how was I to reach
up to it? How to open the cowling? For on my earlier walkaround had noticed
an absence of the usual Dzus fasteners, with all the cowling gleaming like
an unbroken sheet of seamless metal.
Meanwhile unknown to me the Montreal media got wind of the unexpected
arrival out at the airport and had already arrived at the terminal in droves.
First down the steps was the Flight Engineer who knew full rightly that no
one at ULX would have the foggiest clue what actions to take. But that
wasn't the problem facing me. No, the big problem was the huge three
quarter circle of pressmen/photographers now ranged around the plane. What
a letdown for TCA and crew 31 with the evening papers screaming out about
our inadequacy. No radio.....looking 360 degrees for help just noticed one
of TCA ground controllers car about to disappear behind the crowd. I waved
and waved and wa....oh heck, he's gone. What to do? To my intense relief
the controllers car pulled up behind me with the call "Right Eddy, what can
I do for you". Relief! I jumped in beside him and said pull that window
down quick as I relayed the dilemma to him. Calling the tower to clear the
airside crowd took only a few minutes.
Mounting the platform with the Engineer who had no English, plus a
necessary interpreter it went like "xxxxxxx" "screwdriver" hand over
screwdriver. "xxxxxxx" "sidecutters" "xxxxx" "spanner" "xxxxx" "lockwire"
(faulty air valve, to be opened manually) All done. Once the airplane
departed.......had to go back to the hangar.

Taxiing down the tarmac, the jetliner abruptly stopped, turned around and

"The pilot was bothered by a noise he heard in the engine,"
explained the flight attendant, "and it took us a while to find a new pilot
A man telephoned an airline office in New York and asked,
"How long does it take to fly to Boston?"
The clerk said, "Just a minute."
"Thank you," the man said and hung up.
A man walks up to the counter at the airport. "Can I help you?" asks the
agent. "I want a round trip ticket," says the man. "Where to?" asks the
agent. "Right back to here."
One of the airlines recently introduced a special half-fare rate for wives
accompanying their husbands on business trips. Anticipating some valuable
testimonials, the publicity department of the airline sent out letters to
all
the wives of businessmen who used the special rates, asking how they enjoyed
their trip. Responses are still pouring in from angry wives asking, "What

COMMENT LETTER TO THE NETLETTER EDITORS.:
Bill Rowe's piece in the latest NetLetter (629) was very illuminating and
comforting
if you are a member of the canadian pension plan.
Bill's title/position is not "Canadian Pionairs Pension and Benefit
Representative"
but <Overall>" Pionairs Pension and Benefir Plan Rep" ....
since the NetLetter serves NOT ONLY Canadians, it would have been
appropriate to
also cover the situation relative to US and other countries' AC Pension
Plans.
Other countries' TCA/AC/CPAIR employees made major contributions over the
years
which helped make the company what it is today (and has been even before
Robert took over).
As a world airline, let's get this attitude of "Canada First" out of our
system; Air Canada is no longer a Crown Corporation!. The same Company
source that provided Bill with the status report on the Canadian Plan would
have been able to provide similar information on the safety (or otherwise)
of the Company's investment of our pension contributions and the Company's
matching funds in countries outside of Canada.

I've received some queries from readers re the safety of the U.S. and U.K.
Pension plans.
Pensions are protected in much the same way as Canada by their respective
countries legislation. I've been advised that AC has separate rules and
administrative procedures for each plan. The AC-U.S. Pension Plan and the
AC-U.K. Pension Trust are both in full compliance with their respective
government legislation and regulations. Furthermore both plans are fully
funded and in very good shape despite the downturn in the markets.

From: Lewis Hand <
I've just received my book from Jim Upton the author of a book on the
L-1011 Tristar. The book is very well done with several pictures of the
Tristar in Air Canada colors. Jim worked at Lockeed for many years and was
project manager for the Lockheed CP-140 Aurora. Jim has also authored
books on the Boeing 777 and the Lockheed L-188 Electra. I am pleased to
say I have all three books and I am very impressed with photography and
detail particularly from a pilots point of view. The books, personally
signed by Jim, can be ordered directly from Jim and Carol. Their web site

TIPS TO REMEMBER
Tips to remember when you travel on both Air Canada and Tango by Air Canada.
If you travel on both Air Canada mainline and Tango flights (AC series
6000 - 6099 )
in one trip, remember that you must register two PNRs :
one for Tango and one for AC,
however, only one trip pass is required and you will only be charged once.
Self-ticketing employees and retirees must make their reservations via the
Employee Travel website or by calling Speech Recognition. Non-self-ticketing
employees and retirees should call the Employee Call Centre.
As there is no baggage transfer between Tango and AC, any checked baggage
must
be picked up at each station and checked in again for the next flight leg.
Travel priorities remain the same.
'---o-o-0-o-o---'
" ' "
BAGGAGE
To check baggage or not to check baggage, that is the question.
Baggage will not be boarded unless it is associated with a
passenger on the aircraft.
This is because of the new security measures.
A positive baggage match is required for all passengers, including standby.
Checked baggage is allowed when travelling standby, but there is no
guarantee
that your bag will make the flight.
For this reason, employees are asked to travel with carry-on baggage only.
Also ensure that your travel partners are aware of these new
baggage procedures. By travelling light, you will help the Company reduce
the
number of flight delays and misplaced baggage.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT STORY.from the National News.
Thurs. Oct. 25 - 6 p.m. ET
Okay, you are not going to believe this one.
A container is found on a ship bound from Egypt to Italy and inside is a
man dressed in a suit, plush surroundings including a laptop computer,
mobile phones, a toilet, good food ... in fact, all the things one might
expect when travelling business class on one of the world's great
airlines.
Oh yes, he had a couple of other things too. A Canadian passport ... or
something that looks identical to a Canadian passport. An air ticket to
Toronto. Some identification that would have allowed him on to airport
tarmacs in this country. And finally, he had a background that Interpol
finds interesting ....

Subject: Pension notes

Is my AC Pension safe ??
1. The Air Canada Pension Plan ( Canada) is registered with the Office
of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions in Ottawa and the Canada
Customs & Revenue Agency It is supervised by federal law (that is right
across Canada). It is completely separate from Company operations/finances
and cannot be touched by the Company for any reasons. In the unlikely event
that the Company ceased to exist, the Plan would still operate, as it does
today, for retirees. All monies (contributions from employees and AC) are
invested by an AC Pension Plan Master Trust through various financial
advisors. As Sponsor of the various plans ( 5 for AC 7 for CAIL) the
Company is responsible to make up any shortfall between contributions and
benefits. This would have to be addressed during any radical restructuring
of the Company.
2. The AC Master Pension Plan Trust invests the money in equities
(60+%), bonds (35+%) and real estate (1.5+%) It is in everyone's interest
that the financial performance of the Trust performs well. In the past
several years it has shown very good growth, which is needed to sustain our
benefits. Since the Fall of 2000 that growth has slowed considerably,
especially in the light of the current stock market. Little if any growth
is expected for 2001. As markets tend to be cyclical it is hoped growth
should resume in the future. Until it does however, any thought of
increased benefits are unlikely. Much will also depend on how fast the
current AC financial problems are resolved.
3. I cannot address anything in relation to the CAIL plans as I am
simply not familiar with them. But they are somewhat similar. And I'm still
learning much about our own plans.
4. Valuations of the Plan must take place every 3 years and are often
done more frequently by our sponsor, AC.
Valuation relates to the liabilities of the plan.....that is the ability of
the plan to meet it's obligations for Pensions. It DOES NOT EQUATE TO
GROWTH of the money in the Trust Fund. In other words you might have growth
but no surplus funds......growth is essential to meet normal obligations.
Even a surplus might not allow extra money for improvements without extra
contributions from both AC and the active employees. Our sponsor tends to
take a conservative approach to the Plan and in light of difficulties other
large plans are currently experiencing (Ontario Teachers, Ont. Municipal
Employees, etc.) this has served us well. However the Pionairs have
improvements in mind for the future and in conjunction with the unions will
put them forward at the appropriate time.
5. Ad Hoc increases.....we would all like to see more than the current
50% of CPI. However over a 17 year period this has resulted in an increase
of over 30%. In the past nine years the increase has been 19 %. We tend to
forget the value of 'compounding' each years increase (small as it might
seem). The cumulative effect is good when compared to many other companies.
Of 298 companies surveyed (with plans comparable to ours) on 33 offered
increases of 50 % or more. The remaining 265 offered either no indexation
or something less than 50%. FYI the ad-hoc increase this year cost
approximately $12 million. Based on Canadian market practice, our
indexation policy seems to be competitive and appropriate.......more would
be better of course, and that's a future challenge.
6. Surplus : Evaluation of the Pension Fund must be done every 3
years. Our Pension Trust is frequently done every year (for example the
current evaluation is for the year ending Dec. 31, 2000, the results of
which will be presented next week to our Committee). Any surplus that might
accrue in the Pension Trust Fund as a result of an evaluation of
liabilities versus assets, done by arms-length professionals for the
Sponsor ( AC), can only be used for legitimate Pension purposes....for
example, an enhancement of the benefits or keeping the plan viable in light
of bad market conditions (which is what's happening currently), that sort
of thing. The Sponsor cannot access funds directly, even for investment
purposes. All access to the Fund is through an appointed Custodian, in our
case CIBC MELLON TRUST. They must be in agreement on the purpose of
withdrawing the funds. Since they are governed by Federal law with respect
to Pensions they would only agree to legitimate use of funds, e.g.
investments ( all of which are specified by Federal law ), payments for
retiree benefits, refunds to employees leaving AC who do not qualify for
pensions, etc.
7. The Sponsor ( AC) cannot access the funds for its own use.
Therefore any talk about misuse of Pension Trust Fund money including any
surplus is simply fear-mongering, outright misleading info and not correct.
Under Federal Pension law a significant surplus might allow the Sponsor
AC ) to take a 'contribution holiday', that is not contribute for the
current year. Conversely if the Fund is in a deficit (as a result of market
conditions, etc.) the Sponsor ( AC ) must make up that deficiency as part
of the guarantee of benefits to retirees. The Sponsor is responsible to
ensure the Fund is viable hence the need to investment contributions
somewhat aggressively but prudently.
8. In summary : is our plan competitive ? Not bad indeed. Could it be
improved upon ? Anything can !
Is our Plan SAFE ? The short answer is YES.

Last night while I lay sleeping, I died, or so it seems.
Then I went up to Heaven, but t'was only in my dreams.
But, it seems St. Peter met me, there at the Pearly Gate.
He said "I must check your record. So stand right there and wait".
He returned and said "Your record is clouded up with flaws.
But on earth I see you laboured, for a very worthy cause.
You fought snow and ice in the winter, and sweated in the summer heat.
You couldn't afford a big meal, when you stopped for a bite to eat.
I see where you drank whisky and used tobacco too.
Fact is you've done lots of things, which a good man shouldn't do.
We can't have men like you up here, your life was full of sin."
The he read the last of my record, grasped my hand and said.
"Come on in."
He took me up to the Big Boss, said "Take him in and treat him well.
He worked for Air Canada, Sir. He's had his share of hell."

A bit on the lighter side from down under.
Dear Vesta - Was clearing out old Netletters recently and in nr 491 there
was a reference to a novel “The Rainbow and the Rose” by Nevil Shute.
Possibly of interest to those who may have read it is that Tasmania was the
scene of that part of the story where a young sick girl was airlifted from
a rugged part of an island back to hospital on the Australian mainland by
the old pilot. The particular part of the island was visited by Shute and
is in the SW where a tin miner, Deny King, lived with his family including
two daughters. the area was and still is virtually uninhabited and only
accessible by boat, ( a lengthy trip S. from Hobart, round the SW Cape and
the into Port Davey and bathurst Harbour) and small aircraft. Deny
gradually gave up his mining but the area became a rendevoux for the many
bushwalkers, (amongst whom were our own two daughters) who came down from
the North through the National Park or walked the South coast track, each a
two-three day trip. He became a Tassie Icon and only died about 6 years
ago. Interestingly an Australian author, Christobel Mattingly, has only
recently completed a biography of Deny with the help of his daughters and
covers many stories of his doings over the years in this remote spot. The
book is called “King of the Wilderness” and has just gone into its second
printing after only a few weeks on sale. I dont have a note of the
publishers here but if anyone is interested just let me know. Regards and
many many thanks as always for the wonderful service which you provide
particularly to us Down Under.

. Air Canada news -
Why is Air Canada Spending Money on Tango Now?:
Air Canada is launching Tango at minimal expense. A small number of the 13
A-320 aircraft were still in Canadian Airlines livery and were due to be
painted; the majority were already in Air Canada livery, therefore
requiring minimal repainting with simple, clean graphics. Tango will be
staffed with existing Air Canada employees and will feature low fares,
electronic ticketing, a simple pricing structure and a unique "all extras
are optional" policy.
