Definitely need to know!
For sometime now, since the introduction of the new T421/T423 Passes, we
at the NetLetter and Duane Frerichs at the RAPCAN eMailNews have been
carrying on a spirited email dialogue with Industry Travel in an endeavor to
understanding the new procedures in light of the numerous emails from both our
readers asking for clarification.
We print here the various emails sent to Industry Travel by Duane Frerichs
and the response recently received -
Linda Kwoon responds for Industry Travel -
Sorry for the delay in replying to you. I am sure you understand
how hectic it can be at Industry Travel and some days are even more
hectic than usual.
I will comment to you step by step. Please see below in CAPS.
My sincere thanks for your attempts to clarify pass itinerary procedures. I
even notice that like Gus and I, you were working yesterday, Sunday. Your
dedication is appreciated.
I BELIEVE A LITTLE SACRIFICE FROM TIME TO TIME COULD GO A LONG
WAY. IT SURE HELPS ME TO GET PREPARED FOR THE UPCOMING
BUSY WEEK WHICH IS A TREND LATELY.
The many e-mails back and forth confirm that there is presently a great
deal of confusion and misunderstanding with the recent implementation of
Form T421. Not only among pass holders, but sales and check in personnel as
well.
HOPEFULLY, THE FEB ISSUE OF HORIZONS AND THE
PAYROLL/PENSION INSERT AS WELL AS TRAINING/JOB AIDS TO AIRPORT CUSTOMER SALES/SERVICE AGENTS WILL HELP CLARIFYING THIS
NEW WAY OF COMPLETING PASS TICKETS.
Terry and Vesta via The NetLetter, and I (Duane) via the RAPCAN eMailNews,
communicate with probably two to three thousand retiree's and they in turn
pass our information onto others who are not on e-mail. We appreciate your
prompt responses to queries from our membership. Not only does it help our
retiree's, I think it benefits Air Canada by reducing the number of
individual queries that you would receive and it simplifies and speeds up
check ins, etc.
I FULLY AGREE.
The form T421 contains 12 instructions for completion. Instruction 10 is
the area of major confusion .
The form T421 initially had two major changes from our old passes. The
discontinuation of stop over coupons (now reinstated) and the auditors coupon.
You state in your e-mail Mon, 29 Jan 2001 07:11
"Your new option is to indicate Toronto-?? (depending on the flight
you can get on) and leave all remaining coupons blank. We now can
indicate the next destination as we travel, e.g., Toronto-Calgary,
in Calgary, write Vancouver, in Vancouver, write Victoria, etc. "
I would agree that this is the only option that makes sense and is
practical, considering the standby nature of our travel and the necessity
to frequently use alternate travel plans. Instruction 10 also states "do
not use flight coupons out of sequence" and "once travel has been completed
all remaining coupons must be voided" which would confirm that the coupons
should be filled out only for the next leg being flown.
A big part of the existing problem: I think it's fair to say is that most
pass users treat the T421 "Instructions for Completion" as the final authority.
Does Air Canada plan to reissue the T421,removing the statement "The
complete itinerary must be indicated by the Cardholder on Flight Coupon No.
1" and changing the instructions to indicate entering each leg in the next
T421 coupon, only for the next leg being flown?
YES, THE REVISED INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE IN THE NEXT RUN OF TICKETS.
Using your suggestion above on entering one leg at a time, coupon 1 most
likely will not be the final destination. How does the finance department
confirm that the correct zone service charge has been indicated on the pass?
WE HAVE A GREAT AUTOMATED TRIP PASS MODULE THAT CAN
RECONSTRUCT ALL THE COUPONS USED ON THE SAME TRIP PASS
TICKET NUMBER AND WILL ASSESS THE CORRECT ZONE CHARGE AND
APPLICABLE TAXES.
I assume that instead of using the former audit coupon for determining
zone service charges the finance department (?) must check all the coupons
used, to verify the correct destination zone charge was indicated on the
pass. Is that correct?
YES. SEE ABOVE NOTE.
On another issue, would you confirm that you statement in your e-mail to
Terry & Vesta, Fri. 23 Jul 99 reconfirming that "passengers holding Family
Affair tickets are treated as revenue passengers and will not be denied
boarding unless they volunteer or unless it is absolutely necessary during
an irregular operation" is still correct?
YES.
I would suggest that answers to these specific issues be included in your
clarification in the payroll insert and the February issue of Horizons?
Linda, once again many thanks for your interest and help in resolving this
issue. We all appreciate and cherish our passes. We consider ourselves part
of the Air Canada team and want our pass system to work as efficiently and
problem free as possible.
HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PLEASURE TO SERVE OUR EMPLOYEES,
WHETHER ACTIVE OR RETIREES. THE NETLETTER AND PERIOD
EXCHANGES OF EMAILS BETWEEN OURSELVES HAVE BEEN
BENEFICIAL TO BOTH OUR RETIREES AND OUR DEPARTMENT.
BEST REGARDS
LINDA
Thanks Linda,
I think your answers have gone a long way in clarifying and resolving these problems.
Hopefully once everyone has received the Feb. Issue of Horizons and their
payroll/pension insert pass travel will be much improved for everyone.

. News from CAIRE and PIONAIRS -
Pat & Bob Hill (of CAIRE Chapter 2) sent this message -
My husband, Bob, and myself - both former employees of Canadian Airlines,
have yet to receive the notification in the mail to apply for membership in the
AC Pionairs organization. It seems most of the people at the CAIRE
Chapter 2 Meeting last Thursday, January 25, at the Cowichan Golf &Country
Club were in possession of this document along with the info. regarding the
Annual (CAIRE) Luncheon scheduled for April 11 in Vancouver.
Could you please advise me whom I could contact to get copies of this
application form as we are most interested in becoming members of
the new AC Pionairs? <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. >
The following response was from Barbara Hambleton - National secretary of Pionairs -
The CAIRE luncheon notice was sent out by John Smerdon Caire.
We "piggy-backed" on his mailer and used the opportunity to send our
Pionair application with it.
We don't have names or addresses of the Caire people so if anyone else
asks you this question please refer them to
John Smerdon (he doesn't have e-mail)
1-604-275-4501, 465 Coventry Drive, Richmond, BC V7C 4R7.
FYI we have already received over 400 applications.
We are really looking forward to having them join us and hope to see a lot
of new members at our Pionair AGM in May, being held in Calgary.
We will send the Pionair AGM package out to every one who applies to become
a member. Thanks, BarbThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

. Tom Martin sends this story -
It seemed ironic to me to see Dave O'Neill's name appear in N/L 552 as
a new subscriber at the same time as a Smilie appeared about the Barf bag.
It brought back memories of the first trip Dave and I took a trip to the
Middle East on contract business maybe 20 years ago. We arranged to meet
the Saudia Tech Rep - Roger? - and his charming wife Diane. They in effect
acted as our hosts and guides for the to visit SV to try get more contract business.
From there we were to go on or own to Gulf Air to try to convince them to do
business with us. Roger, Diane, Dave and I boarded an SV flight to Jeddah,
but first we had to buy a bottle of sherry, which I didn't figure out, however enroute
there was no alcohol so that explained the purchase. As we neared Jeddah, we
could hear the clinking of empty bottles all around us under the seats. Also as
we neared our destination, Diane said - watch the lavs. There were a number of
beautifully dressed women on board and there became a steady stream of
these ladies going to the lav and reappearing fully covered in traditional garb.
During the mornings we would have our meeting with the SV people, then our
hosts would take over. They had a house in an American compound where they
said have a look at our swimming pool. There was a bare outline of the top of the
pool, the rest had been filled with sand by the local keepers of morality - no
half bare women in bathing suits would be tolerated. One afternoon we went to
the Red Sea for a swim. Far too mucky for me, so while Dave and Roger went for
a dip, I suggested to Diane we go out on the pier for a dive in. Lots of locals were
there and Diane said she'd be pinched black and blue - no thanks.
In the souk (market) when I wondered about the safety of so much gold and
jewellry unattended I was told anyone who stole would lose their hand - not to worry.
Another evening we went to a local apartment for a party and were asked what
we wanted to drink - rum, rye, scotch, gin. I said whatever you have most off.
Turned out to be local hooch made by non Arabs and a dash of colour was
added to satisfy the choice of booze - it was all the same.
As the "barf bag" coincidence, we left for Gulf Air and onboard we were given a
small bottle of water and clever me decided it would be smart to save it so I grabbed
a sickness bag from the seat back, opened it by sticking my hand in it and YUK,
it had already been used. Big Dave got a kick out of this, but I was not amused.
We did continue to do business with SV, but no luck with Gulf, at least then.

Boston's Logan Airport to provide for stranded passengers
Logan Airport soon will provide lodgings of a sort for passengers stranded
overnight because of bad weather.
The Massachusetts Port Authority, operator of Logan, has purchased 500 cots.
When 10 or more people are stranded at the airport for four hours or more,
they can use the cots to get some sleep. It will be up to the airlines to provide
pillows and blankets.
UFO Shuts Down Russian Airport
An airport in southern Siberia was shut down for an hour and a half recently
when an unidentified flying object (UFO) was detected hovering above its
runway. The crew of an Il-76 cargo aircraft refused to take off, claiming they saw
a luminescent object hovering above the runway of the Siberia's Barnaul airport,
local aviation company director Ivan Komarov was quoted as saying.
The crew of another cargo plane, refusing to use the runway for the same reason
landed their jet at another airport, Komarov said. The UFO took off and
vanished from the airport 90 minutes later, according to the report.

. Pickings from the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -
The last Canadian Airlines 747-400 is being re-painted this week into the new
"Air Canada" colours. During February and March the airplanes that require a
change in FIN number will be converted. This includes all of the Boeing 737
fleet and four of the 767-300s. The four 747-400s will also be changed during
this time period. Meanwhile, one by one each of Canadian's 767s, 747s and
Airbus aircraft are being converted to metric measurement to match Air Canada's fleet.
The current objective is to have all of this work done by the end of April at the latest
which will coincide with one operating certificate being granted by Transport Canada.
It's been a long time since Air Canada served Stephenville Nfld. (YJT) airport but the
airfield saw two Boeing 767s on January 28th.
Flight AC881 (with aircraft C-GDSY/FIN616) enroute from Paris to Toronto made an
un-scheduled stop there due to engine problems. Aircraft C-GAUH/FIN603 was
ferried down from Toronto later in the afternoon to pick up the stranded passengers
and bring them back to Toronto. Meanwhile, the wounded airplane ferried up to
YYZ on January 29th after receiving attention from mechanics.

I like that, Author unknown, contributed by Gord Dalziel ...
REDUCED FARE ! !
Rather than have us drive him to the Vancouver airport so early in the
morning, our son considerately took the airport bus.
The driver collected the fares when they arrived at the airport. Bruce,
dressed in his navy commander's uniform, was the last to leave and was
delighted to be told his fare was only $9. When he had made the bus
reservation, he had been told the passenger fare was $18. As Bruce walked
towards the terminal, the bus driver called after him, "Now fly that plane
carefully, sir!"
NOW THAT'S SOME PLAN ? ? ?
My helicopter crew was to augment another squadron during an exercise
at CFB Gagetown in New Brunswick. During the briefing we were surprised
to learn that the mission was going to take almost three hours of continuous
flying. We carry only two hours of fuel. Asked about this, the mission commander
replied, "I know we're short, but there isn't enough time to refuel so
we'll have to do without."
JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS
It was part of my job as a private in the Base Traffic Section at CFB Goose
Bay, Labrador, to keep passengers informed about service-flight arrival
times. I called the Military Control Centre one day and asked, "What's the
word on the Herc?"
"CANADA, in big black letters," was the reply.

landed their jet at another airport, Komarov said.

As mentioned in the Employee Travel document sent to your home in
September, some delays in processing service charge deductions were
anticipated to ensure the new automated revenue accounting system's integrity.
As a result, from the February pay period onward, you'll begin to see travel service
charges deducted from your pay or pension. Don't worry service charges will be
deducted on a staggered basis travel that was completed in November,
in all likelihood, shouldn't be charged with travel completed in early January.
From Industry Travel -
You will be receiving shortly an insert with your pension station
concerning the use of stopover coupons. Where previously, stopover
coupons used to be requested where connections or stopovers were
required between your Flight Coupon No. 2 and last coupon, the new
procedure is that one must have used completely all the 6 flight
coupons and HAVE REACHED THE FINAL OUTBOUND DESTINATION, e.g.,
GANDER-ST. JOHN'S-HALIFAX-MONTREAL-TORONTO-VANCOUVER-
VICTORIA, a stopover coupon will be given by the airport Customer

flights from Victoria to Gander.
In other words, for one-way outbound travel, the maximum number of
6 flights coupons will apply.
In example, YYJ-YVR-YYC-YWG-YYZ-YYC-YVR-YYJ, once all the

PIPER DAKOTA ATTEMPTS PACIFIC CIRCUMNAVIGATION:
Hard as it is to believe, there are still aviation records left to attempt.
Polly Vacher has become the latest, hoping to circumnavigate the earth
solo in a Piper Dakota. What makes this trip record-setting is that the
Dakota will be the smallest aircraft flown solo by a woman along this
particular Pacific route.
WHAT ME, WORRY?
Her friends at work may be concerned about the possible
US Airways/United merger, but US Airways flight attendant
Cynthia Malinoski doesn't have a care in the world.
Malinoski was on a layover in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday, January 12,
and decided to while away the time by doing a little gambling.
A few quarters later, Malinoski was $9 million richer, thanks to a big
payoff at a Megabucks slot machine.

We know of pass holders either visiting to US from Canada via other than
air transportation either land or sea, and returning by pass or visa versa.
We asked Industry Travel for guidance -
The person is flying from Halifax to Vancouver to Nanaimo on pass
then driving down to Phoenix and flying back to Halifax via Toronto on pass.
I assume the pass would read
Halifax
Vancouver
Nanaimo
Phoenix
Toronto
Halifax
and be zone 2 charge.
The Nanaimo to Phoenix leg would not be used.
US taxes would only apply from the US not both ways.
Industry travel responds -
We are currently working on valid pass routings on one trip pass ticket.
I can confirm that the itineraries below will be considered as one trip.
The US taxes will apply. Payrolls advised that their system will continue to
capture both US departure and arrival taxes. The retiree will then have to
apply for a refund on the arrival tax (since he will be not going back to the
U.S.).
(Photocopies of document covering charge ie payroll stub, and
the unused coupon(s) should be included with the claim - eds)
Simon Farthing sends this information -

Stop Over coupons are reinstated.
Individuals who need more than the six coupons contained in their

can use stopover coupons for each additional flight segment to
complete their return journey.
Stop Over coupons are to be used only when all six coupons of the
personal and parent/partner trip pass ticket are completed.
At each subsequent station, upon presentation of your used trip pass ticket,
a stopover coupon can be requested for each additional flight segment.
Airport departure tax from Auckland, NZ.
If you're headed down under beware the airport departure tax at

Subject: the only way to fly
A Canadian company that opened an
"oxygen spa" last year at the Calgary International Airport — offering
travelers a chance to breathe nearly pure oxygen for a few minutes to
recharge their system — says the idea has been a hit and will likely
expand to other locations. The Calgary spa features six lounge chairs
where customers relax while breathing oxygen through tubes.
It also offers massages and other services.
(Now if they would add a separate tube for vodka martinis and the put
the whole thing on a 747 (business class of course) this might
combat blood clotting ;-)

. Doug Hicks sends this -
A recent issue of Horizons had an article on the Company's deicing
operation. Perhaps this story in the news letter might help to understand
the "beginnings of this project"
In the late 40s I was Ramp Supervisor at Toronto. Working the midnight
shift the weather was ripe for the trial. The forecast was for at least four to five
inches of snow. Now the plan was to park a DC-3 on the gate overnight with
no covers and let the snow fall. Gate one was selected, the aircraft was to be
used on the Ottawa flight in the morning at 0730.
At 0700 the plan started, buckets of glycol (that had been removed
from North Star RR engines on a Maintenance check) and long handled mops.
Maintenance and ramp personnel manned the equipment? In no time the snow
had been removed, the entire aircraft glistened in the shiny glow of the green
glycol. Passengers were boarded some, 15 to16, not one made any mention
of the aircrafts' strange appearance, the aircraft was now dripping a green
colored liquid. The flight departed a few minutes late, when it had left the
gate, there was this perfect outline of a DC-3 aircraft in glycol green.
Doug also sends this information -
For the Book fans of the Net Letter.
There is new book out in Canada called "As for the Canadians"
by Rita Donovan.ISBN 1-894543-03-3
It is about a very exclusive Club called the "Guinea Pig Club".
To gain admission to this Club you must have served in the RCAF during
WW2 and suffered burns. Today, the membership dwindles rapidly with now
less than 50 members. Oddly there are 3 members of this club who are now
retired Air Canada employees.
John "Jack" Harding, Henry "Hank" Ernst and myself Douglas J. Hicks

Your call is important to us!
Last summer, an Ontario senior, phoned Air Canada at 8:30 one morning
to firm up a tentative booking made earlier to Kauai. Still on hold at 2 pm,
she took a break to run errands. At 10:30 pm she tried again. Once more
a prerecorded voice asked her to "please stay on the line." She did, falling
into a fitful sleep with a pillow holding the phone to her ear. At 6:15 am.,
an agent answered and completed the booking.
Total wait time elapsed: 13 hours and 15 minutes, about the length of time
for a flight from Toronto to Kauai.

FLYING BROTHERS ...
My younger brother and I, Canadians of Japanese descent, were assigned to
the same unit as navigators on 437 Transport Squadron at the Trenton, Ont.,
air base. As soon as my flight landed in Lahr, Germany, after one routine
flight, I reported to the weather office to debrief the duty meteorologist
on the transatlantic weather my crew had encountered. As it happened, an
hour later the next home-bound crew, including my brother, reported to the
weather office for their preflight briefing. The meteorologist hadn't
spoken for long before he peered quizzically at my brother in his flight suit,
handed him the pointer and said, "Here, you know the weather much better

Simon Farthing sends this information -
From my last trip,
airport tax is $15 US in Nassau, no exemption for stopover.
$20 US in Havana at all terminals, probably no stopover exemption either.
Last year was Can $40 in Montego Bay, with 1 day stopover exemption
Simon Farthing
Stop Over coupons are reinstated.
Individuals who need more than the six coupons contained in their
personal (T421) or parent/partner (T423) trip pass tickets,
can use stopover coupons for each additional flight segment to
complete their return journey.
If you're headed down under beware the airport departure tax at
Auckland International Airport is NZ $20.
The Cardholder Information Profile (CHIP) process is now complete.
The limited ticket allotments for 2001 are securely entered in RESIII for

Subject: the only way to fly
A Canadian company that opened an
"oxygen spa" last year at the Calgary International Airport — offering
travelers a chance to breathe nearly pure oxygen for a few minutes to
recharge their system — says the idea has been a hit and will likely
expand to other locations. The Calgary spa features six lounge chairs
where customers relax while breathing oxygen through tubes.
It also offers massages and other services.
(Now if they would add a separate tube for vodka martinis and the put
the whole thing on a 747 (business class of course) this might
combat blood clotting ;-)

Last summer, an Ontario senior, phoned Air Canada at 8:30 one morning

she took a break to run errands.

Subject: ASSOCIATION OF CANDIAN AIRLINES INTERNATIONAL
Hi: I am involved in publicizing the 2001 annual luncheon for Canadian
Airlines International Airlines Employees.
On April 11, 2001 C.A.I.R.E. will again be hosting an annual luncheon for
employees who have retired from Canadian Airlines International, or from one of the constituent airlines.
At our last luncheon in June 2000 we were privileged to view some excellent
videos which dealt with “who we were in the past” some well deserved nostalgia.
But a new era is unfolding before us, and our luncheon this year will focus on
“what we can become in the future”.
As we all know, the management of Air Canada is moving as quickly as possible
to integrate all Canadian Airlines operations and employees under the Air Canada
Operating License and name. As part of the integration process, Air Canada has
given approval for the enrollment of all Canadian Airlines retirees into the Air Canada “Pionairs” retiree association. This will ensure that all retirees both Air Canada
and former Canadian will have recognized representation in any future liaisons with
the Company regarding retiree matters. It is our plan, and our hope, that at our
April 11th luncheon in Vancouver that we will have very senior Executive Officers
of Air Canada, as well as the Pionairs National Executive, speak to us about the
vision of our airline in the future.
A limited number of table reservations for groups of 10 will be available and it is
hoped that a number of retired pilots will elect to form a few groups and join us
in what is expected to be the final luncheon prior to our amalgamation.
Thanks in advance and if any questions please advise.

. Frequent flier?
A California civil engineer, earned a lifetime of free air travel through purchases
in local food stores. Taking advantage of a promotion offering frequent flier miles in
exchange for product bar codes, he took his mother-in-law on a shopping spree.
Buying 12,150 cups of Healthy Choice pudding cups at 25 cents a pop, turned the
entire amount over to food banks in return for help removing the labels before the
contest deadline. He then exchanged the code strips for 1.25 million frequent
flier miles.

From the eMailNews issued by Duane Frerichs -
Subject: DC-3
I had an experience also with the uniform eating DC-3. On a very warm day on
our west coast we had opened the cockpit side windows in order to help cool
the "greenhouse". I was executing the take off on runway 08 in Pat Bay and my
tunic was hanging behind me on the wall. Just after lift off there was a short
"fwupp" and Don Orr remarked "some people have to learn the hard way".
We advised the radio operator of the happening and when we returned they had
retrieved my tunic which was lying on the bottom of runway 26.
The only evidence of the encounter it must have had with the propeller was a tiny
deep nick across a braid on the right sleeve which never diminished, even after several cleanings. Bernie McCormack
In an advert dated Sept 1953, B.O.A.C. announced "Off season Atlantic fares"
with "really big reductions" between Nov 1st and Mar 31st -
Montreal to London Eng return
Regular First Class ca$685.80, out-of-season ca$588.40,
Regular Tourist ca$486.00, out-of-season ca$417.30

He then exchanged the code strips for 1.25 million frequent
flier miles.

. Found on the internet.
The Come Back Soon award goes to 90 year old Kitty Synacak of Germany
who flew home to Stuttgart with Canada3000 following a visit to Canada. But
when the flight landed Kitty remained sitting. Only on the return flight back
to Toronto did the crew notice she was still aboard, quietly enjoying the hospitality.

. Remember when?
Not much different from today's "seal sale" offerings!

Art Frolick sends this information with a mayday included!
My wife and I took advantage of your recommendations at the DeVere Hotel
in Sydney, and we report that it is quite adequate.
Price is right, the location is interesting. But we are enjoying every minute.
Now we are considering a week or so in Waikiki starting Feb 5 or thereabouts.
Do you have any good leads on hotel accommodations?
BTW, having a great time in Sydney, OZ
