From Employee Travel -
New policies for booking positive space travel.
On November 30, new policies are being introduced to make positive space
bookings for business and pleasure easier. The most important change is the
reduction of the number of restricted flights. Fewer restrictions mean better
flight options when traveling on AC, Tango, Air Canada Regional and Central
Mountain Air, Calm Air and Air Georgian.
Here are the changes you must keep in mind when arranging for positive space
travel:
Travel can only be booked in H class (economy) or C class (executive) within 21
days of the first flight departure. All other subsequent flights on the same
PNR are not restricted and can be booked anytime.
Flight restrictions for positive space travel have been reduced to only
Rapidair flights. Fewer blackouts mean that there are more choices for positive
space travel.
Rapidair restrictions do not apply to passengers with confirmed connections
between Air Canada and ACR.
Wait-listing in H class is not permitted.
Note: Send your questions regarding the program to Employee Travel at

. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -
The Globe & Mail published a story last week, written by a Jan Wong,
bragging about how she smuggled a box cutter and other sharp objects onto
some Air Canada flights when she travelled out west. The revelation
embarrassed the airline and set off more calls for Transport Minister David
Collenette to federalize the passenger-screening process. She was going to
Victoria to attend a Canadian Association of Journalists writers symposium,
sponsored by Air Canada. No where in Ms. Wong's story did she mention one
entirely germane fact; that Air Canada paid for her tickets on the trip
from Toronto to Victoria, to Calgary and back to Toronto. As part of its
sponsorship of the CAJ event, the airline provided "contra" --free tickets
in exchange for ads in the conference program. Ms. Wong, who gave a talk on
her "Lunch With" column was among those who received the gratis
round-trippers. Indeed, the ticket Ms. Wong used on her box-cutter flights
was stamped "VIP" and "journalist" --a fact that she allowed in the story
without further explanation of its origins.
Ethical questions aside, Ms. Wong's stunt places the CAJ in a rather
precarious position, having a prime sponsor which was so badly sandbagged.
"Obviously, it puts us in an awkward position," CAJ president Rob Cribb told
us, "Air Canada is aware we had no control over the story and we would not
be responsible, (but) it certainly would have been easier on us if the Globe
& Mail had financed the trip." (The above report was from the Ottawa
Citizen--Nov 11th)

Netscape Messenger Tip #1 What is Netscape Messenger
and Messenger Express?
Netscape Messenger is Air Canada's new office e-mail system.
It is being introduced over the next few months and will soon
become our standard system. Messenger Express is the tool that provides
access to your e-mail account via the Internet/Aeronet
from a computer where the Netscape software is not available.
With Messenger Express, employees can access their e-mail from another
office, from home, or on the road - anywhere in the
world. For more information, check out the Netscape Messenger
e-mail Resource Centre on Aeronet.

Here is a good tip to avoid spreading a virus in case you get one.
In your address book, just open a new contact with 0000 (this is zero)
without an e-mail address. This contact will go on top of your list and if a
virus comes in with the intention of going to all your friends, your PC will
show an error and will stop the spread. It makes sense to me!
From one of our readers via RAPCAN.
Your writer regarding this subject is on the money (and will save you money
if you heed his advice.) Also be aware that NAV 2002 will do an automatic
live update for one year free from the date you install the program. (This
is different than previous versions where a popup notice would advise you
that it was time to update - this does it for you when you go online.) For
email it will also scan outgoing mail as well as incoming. This is a
blessing for all your recipients should you have a virus. One more thing,
delete all nabbed viruses - don't use the repair or to quarantine options.
Safe computing.

Subject: Partner Passes.
Author: Gus deJardin <
Date: 11/21/01 11:28 AM
Good morning Robert,
Attached is a copy of the letter sent to your office Monday specifically
asking if "children of the retiree and their spouses could travel
unaccompanied on partner passes ?"
The letter then identifies them as well experienced pass travellers
familiar with behavior and dress code requirements. As they have "grown
up" in this travel environment, I suggest that they be excluded from
requiring the employee or spouse ie: mom or dad, having to accompany
them.
Would your office consider that this is a valid exception ?
******
Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2001 16:16:43 -0500
From: "Robert Petryk"<
Subject: Re: Partner Passes.
Good afternoon Gus
Thank you for your comments.
One of the primary reasons partner program changes are being
implemented is to help reduce the operation problems that result when
large number of nonrevenue customers that are being stranded.
Our reduced capacity and increased load factors results in hundreds of
C5's are being stranded or left behind across the system everyday. We
have examples of C5's waiting for up to 7 days to get out of HNL. Last
month there were over 300 C5's waiting to travel eastbound from
Vancouver.
We issued over 500,000 partner trips this year.
40% - 50% of the nonrevenues on flights today are unaccompanied C5's.
Increased security and the need for positive baggage match creates a
tremendous burden on airports as they try to load non revenue baggage
for those that are being cleared at the last minute.
On time performance and flight delays are being encountered everyday as we
process the loading of nonrevenues - many of which are C5 unaccompanied guests.
At least one major US Airline is contemplating the complete cancellation of
its
partner program including accompanied partners. Most other carriers require
that
employees and retirees accompany their guests at all times. Unaccompanied
partner travel is the exception.
Non dependent children are eligible to purchase Family Affair tickets. I
realize
this is more costly but it also allows them to travel on a confirmed basis.
Our goal with this recent policy change is aimed at creating a partner program
that is sustainable over time. We realize we will never create a policy that
meets everyone's needs and expectations.
I appreciate your comments and hope this note helps explain why these changes
are being implemented.

Subject: AC Travel Partner & Parent Program - 2002
From: Fraser O'Shaughnessy <
Air Canada Travel Partner and Parent program 2002
The Air Canada Partner and Parent Travel Program is renewed for another year.
Important changes were made to this cherished privilege to ensure its
continuation during times of operational strain on the airline.
Why change the program?
Within the current program, employees bear a heavy responsibility for
individuals traveling on their passes. Partners are not used to the regulations
of the industry and are unaware or unprepared for the rigors of stand-by
travel. Partners often faced stressful situations that have escalated to create
operational issues, delayed flights and loss of revenue.
Stand-by travel is a special privilege that Air Canada is proud and pleased to
provide for its employees and their travel partners. To safeguard the existence
of this program, many options were researched and all the benefits and major
concerns were taken into consideration.
The new program will continue to offer you the enjoyment of traveling with
parents, relatives and friends on a space available basis. Parents and partners
will share an annual allotment of ten (10) space available passes for travel on
Air Canada, Tango, Air Canada Regional and Tier 3 carriers. In addition, eight
(8) space available passes can be used on our Star Alliance carriers.
Program Highlights:
Effective February 1, 2002, active or retired employee, widow/widower or spouse
must accompany their partners on all flights.
Parents are permitted to travel unaccompanied at their current boarding
priorities.
The responsibility of travelling with a partner can not be transferred to
parents and dependent children.
Pass holders can travel with their spouse, dependent children and a maximum of
4 travel partners and 2 parents per trip.
Widow/widowers receive 4 partner tickets each year.
Partners and parents must abide by the Company policy on conduct and dress code
Partners and parents are permitted to travel on all Air Canada and Tango
flights, Air Canada Regional and Tier 3 carriers.
STAR Alliance Partner Program Allotments and conditions remain the same
-employees and retirees can use up to eight (8) space available tickets per
year, for relatives and friends. Only two (2) travel partners are permitted on
any trip and must be accompanied by the employee.
Travel must be booked through Speech Recognition at (888) 834-6660 (outside
North America, call (514) 369-2739) or log on to the Employee Travel Website
at travel.aircanada.ca.
For employees who do not have access to SR and ETW, call Employee Travel
Services formerly the Employee Call Centre at (800) 413-1113. As of November
29,General Reservations stopped handling these calls.
Employees must keep account of their allotment for partner and parent passes.
Service charge levels remain the same and are subject to applicable taxes and
fees.
Service Charges (one way or return)Zone 1Zone 2Zone 3North America Domestic and
Transborder Short Haul. Includes Regional flights / excludes Caribbean.
70North American Domestic and Transborder Long Haul, Caribbean, & Mexico
100Trans Atlantic and Trans Pacific travel and flights from North America to
Hawaii, Australia, & South America160
Program Benefits
Partners travel on the employee’s priority, which reduces the chances of being
stranded at an airport for hours or even days.
Fewer operational issues, such as line-ups, flight delays and congestion at
gates.
Employees can ensure the proper conduct of their partners, instead of bearing
the repercussions of partner misconduct.
A lesser amount of on-board incidents due to partner misconduct.
Eliminate fraudulent selling or bartering of partner passes
Important Dates
December 31, 2001: Last date partners and parents can travel outbound
using
the 2001 trip pass allotment.
January 1, 2002: Employees receive their 2002 allotment of ten (10)
partner and parent passes for travel on Air Canada, Tango, Air Canada Regional
and Tier 3 carriers.
January 14, 2002: Employees receive the 2002 eight (8) parent and partner
pass for travel on Star Alliance carriers.
January 31, 2002: Travel for partners and parents using the 2001 pass
allotment must be complete.
February 1, 2002: All partner travel must be accompanied.
Questions & Answers
Q: Why are you taking this privilege away from employees in the midst of
layoffs, terminations and uncertainty in our organization?
A: Air Canada has not abolished partner travel privileges for employees.
Partner travel issues have threatened the existence of the program for quite
some time. The Company made these necessary changes to reduce the operational
burden and strain it created on our organization.
Q: Are these changes, in part, due to the misuse or fraudulent
behaviour by
some employees and their partners?
A: Yes. Abuse of travel privileges will not be tolerated. Employees
suspected of fraud or misuse will be investigated and subject to severe
consequences, including a suspension of travel privileges or dismissal.
Q: Why was the number of passes decreased from 14 to 10?
A: The number of passes has not decreased. The allotment of 14 passes was
an exception to the program for October 2000 to December 2001.
Q: Now that my partners can’t travel alone, I am forced to travel with
them. Will you consider offering me a reduced service charge?
A: We do not make a distinction for the ‘reason’ why the employee travels,
therefore, service charges will not change. Partners do not have the travel
privilege entitlement with Air Canada you do.
Q: Why can parents travel unaccompanied but partners cannot? This
suggests
that parents are trusted to uphold the policies but partners aren’t.
A: There are very few incidents involving parents, but there have been
numerous incidents involving partners. In addition, parents are recognized and
have historically been extended travel privileges within the industry.
Q: Will you lower the cost of Family Affair, now that other family
members
cannot travel unaccompanied?
A: Although we are looking at options for family members, we are
unable to
communicate information at this time.
Q: What do I do if I am registered on a flight with 2 partners and the
flight only has 2 seats available?
A: You must wait for a flight that has 3 or more seats available. If you
elect to travel with only one of your partners, the other partner will not be
able to travel on the pass and will have to purchase a revenue fare ticket.
Q: What happens if I don’t make the flight that I registered my partners
and myself on, but they are boarded anyway?
A: It is your responsibility to advise partners not to check-in or travel
without you. Any instance of partners travelling unaccompanied will be
investigated and the employees’ partner travel privileges will be suspended for
5 years.
Q: Can my spouse and I travel with 4 partners each on the same flight?
A: No. Spouses can only accompany partners if they are travelling on a
different flight without the employee.
Q: Am I able to accompany another employees’ travel partner?
A: No. You can only accompany partners who are using your partner pass
allotment.
Q: Are these the only changes to the partner program? Will there be any
more changes?
A: Travel privileges, including the Partner Travel Program, are subject to
change without notice. Changes are not made lightly and every thought is given
to evaluating the benefits and issues surrounding the program to ensure its
feasibility.

At our last Pionair Board of
Directors' Meeting I was asked to pass on the following question :-- As
most retirees do not have living parents, would it be possible to allow
the children of the retiree and their spouses to travel unaccompanied on
partner passes?. The children of retirees are well-experienced
space-available travellers and are very familiar with the policy, code
of conduct, and the dress requirements that is expected of them. As far
as we, the Pionairs, know, there has not been any incidents involving
these non-dependent children and their spouses when using Partner
Passes. Certainly they are not going to do anything to endanger their
parent's pass privileges. At other times widows/widowers have asked why
they have reduced pass privileges and is it possible for them to have
the same pass allotment as the deceased retiree. Their reasoning is that
they still have the same relatives and friends as previously wishing to
use the PA Pass. In the program document I believe that there is a
contradiction between Highlights item #4 and Q&A #9. Many thanks to you
all in Industry Travel for coming up with a good solution to a difficult
and embarrassing problem. Regards, Fraser
From: "Robert Petryk"<
Good afternoon Fraser
The retiree or spouse can have up to 4 partners on any particular
flight - the max number of partners on any flight is 4.
If the employee or retiree is not travelling a spouse can still bring
up to 4 guests per flight.
Another example if the retiree and spouse both wanted to bring 4
guests each (total of 8 guests) they would need to travel on sparate
flights - ie. 4 partners per flight.

RE: Email Address Changes.
With the demise of @home.com as far as Canadian email users are concern,
there has been a deluge of change of address requests. It would be prudent
to help those with the necessity to change their address by make a few
points on how to do this.
Don't assume that every place you have put your email address handles it
the same way. That means you can't just put every address in your address
book in one email saying "Hi - here's our new address!"
Person to person is no problem and generally you can do this in groups by
using the Bcc (blind carbon copy) method to groups of your friends and
relatives.
However, when it comes to newsletters and website and mail list this is
another story. These are independently run separate entities. They all have
different ways of handling email address databases.
* First check to see if the entity requires you to change your own email
address in your profile - self-administering. This is generally true of all
places where you self-registered in the first place. Go to the place where
you first registered and there is usually the information on how to change
your address. Some times it is as simple as unsubscribing your old address
and subscribing your new address.
* Second, always give your old address as some lists only deal with
addresses - no names.
Here are some of the ways to change your email address with independently
operated entities of the ACFamily Network.
the NetLetter
- send your name, old address and new address to <
RAPCAN & RAPCAN eMailNews
- send your name, old address and new address to <
Pionairs Email Notification Service
- send old address and new address (names not listed) to
<
Your Pionairs membership file
- go to the Pionairs website www.pionairs.ca and you will find a change of
information form to submit via the Internet
ACFNews
- go to www.acfamily.net/acfnews/index.htm#subscription and simply
unsubscribe you old address and subscribe your new one (you will get an
email to acknowledge that you indeed what to subscribe - this is for your
protection against unwanted subscription.)
ACFNews Notification List
This is a list mainly of Air Canada email addresses which can only handle
text. If you are on this list:
- send your old address and new address (names are not listed) to
<
ACFamily Network Portal and Forums
All areas of the ACFNetwork Portal and Forums are self-administrating. They
do not have access to passwords so you must change your email address by
logging on with your old address, etc as before through www.acfamily.net
and click PROFILE and edit your profile which includes your email address.
Also change your address in the ConList by going to the ConList and
clicking MODIFY/RENEW LISTING, then put in your Conlist number and password
and then change your information.
If you have a classified ad, just follow the instruction for changing your
listing.
