. Nice to know!
Questions and Answers
Q Who are Canadian Airlines' (CDN) domestic commercial partners?
Effective April 2, CDN's domestic partners are Air Norterra,
Calm Air, Air Alma, and Air St Pierre.
Q What about RESIII? Are we keeping it?
Yes, for the time being. A long-term plan has Air Canada (AC)
and CDN aligning with our Star AllianceÖ partners.
Q When will Partner/Parent passes be accepted on CDN?
This is still under review by the integration team.
No decisions have been made yet.
Q Is AC purchasing CDN's fleet?
No, there are no plans for AC to purchase CDN's fleet.
Q With CDN going to RESIII, will any AC resources be used to
train CDN staff?
Without doubt, we will be relying on the expertise of AC to support
the migration to RESIII. This support could take the form of
classroom instruction working with CDN trainers, or on-the-job
coaching_probably both. Training teams from each airline are
already working together to support the integrated summer schedule.
This collaboration will continue.
Q Is the start up of WestJet operations in Eastern Canada still a
great concern to AC?
WestJet's strategy is to cater to the leisure and Visiting Friends
and Relatives (VFR) market segments, and to stimulate demand with
a "no-frills, low-fare" product. Its product may also attract some
price-sensitive business travellers, who can adjust their schedule
to book on WestJet's limited frequencies. Historically, AC has a
strong market share in the East. It will compete with WestJet.
Q Did the sale period for Canadian Regional Airlines (CRA) start on
March 15 as originally planned?
No. The valuation process was far more involved and complex than
originally anticipated. It has taken more time than we would have
liked. All parties are currently finalising valuation details and
the sale process should begin by the end of March.
Employees should take comfort in the fact that AC and CDN are
extremely committed to CRA and will work to complete this process
as quickly as possible. We remain optimistic the results will be
positive for CRA and the mainline.
Siberian tigress travels with Air Canada. As official carrier for
the Toronto Zoo, on March 1, Toronto Cargo shipped a five-year-old,
300 lb. Siberian tigress to Los Angeles, then to Utah. The whole
Air Canada team helped make her trip memorable: Ramp attendants
provided extra care and handling and both pilots met her before she
was loaded in the aircraft.
AirBC brings spring across Western Canada. Flower shipments from
Victoria kept AirBC Cargo and Ramp personnel very busy.
In the past 10 days, over 32,000 lbs of tulips and daffodils have
been shipped from Victoria to Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg via
Dash-8 aircraft.

. Rumour mill -
Rumour (a): Retirement incentive packages will be offered only to
Canadian Airlines' (CDN) management employees.
Rumour (b): Employment length will not be a consideration when Air
Canada (AC) offers retirement incentive packages.
Rumour (c): There will be no canvassing for volunteers for the
Voluntary Separation Program when it is offered.
Truth: These are all false. In late April, eligible employees will
receive a detailed information package. AC will provide a
1-800 number to assist these employees in answering questions
regarding the Program.
Rumour: Air Georgian will be receiving five Beechcraft aircraft from
Air Alliance.
Truth: This is false.
Rumour: AC and CDN Maintenance departments will be sold to another
company at the end of the "no-layoff" period in 2002.
Truth: Both AC and CDN have great reputations in the maintenance
repair and overhaul business. We have the opportunity to earn
considerable profit by doing work for third parties.
Technical Operations is a profitable business and there is
no desire to sell it. Continued growth in profitable business
is our best guarantee against layoffs.
Rumour: CDN employees will be merging into AC, but without a pension
plan.
Truth: This is false.
Rumour: AC Administrative and Technical Services (A&TS) employees
are in the process of becoming unionised.
Truth: This is mostly false. The International Association of
Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) has filed an
application to represent 10 employees at the Central Baggage
Office in Dorval.
Rumour: AC will cease service to Zurich (ZRH) and that route will be
taken over by CDN.
Truth: This is false. AC has no plans to stop service to ZRH.
Rumour: CDN customers are now able to book AC Aeroplane seats on AC.
Truth: This is true.
Rumour: Eighteen months after CDN migrates to RESIII, both AC and CDN
will revert to SABRE.
Truth: This is false. AC's long-term goal, four-five years in the
future, is to align its reservations system with Star Alliance
members.
No decision has been made on which system will be used.

. Malcolm Macdougall sends some memories of the late Bill Bredt -
Subject: Bill Bredt
When Sally and I stepped down as Pres. and Secy/Treas. of TCA Alumni
we handed over to Bill and Maxine. We couldn't have left the Alumni in
better hands. What a fine couple! Efficient yet always kind and cheerful.
I recall an incident in 1990 which was so typical of Bill.
When returning from the 75th Anniversary Celebrations of 20 Squadron
RAF in Laarbruch, Germany, Sally and I stayed at the Royal Air Force
Club in London as a guest of a 20 Sqdn. officer. Next morning I was at
the registration desk trying to get accommodation for a longer stay and
having little success when from some distance behind me I heard Maxine's
voice saying to Bill, " There's Malcolm Macdougall!".
Bill came over and sorted things out so that we got a room.
Subsequently, when I told him that I wanted to be a member of the club,
he signed the Proposal for Election form and then took the form with him,
sought out Joc Laver and got his signature as my seconder.
At a later date when our daughter was very ill, Bill and Maxine were
very helpful in co-ordinating with the Hudson VON in getting volunteers
to drive her in to hospital for treatment.
Truly, " the airman is home from the sky ".

. T2K coffee group -
Don't forget the upcoming coffee klatch on Tuesday, April 4th at the
Golden Griddle - Airways Centre on the airport strip at 1100.
Al Graham is hoping to attend as many people are expressing concern
about former retirees not being included in pension raises.
Several people have been discussing this since last November and feel
that perhaps it's time to engage a lawyer to look into the matter.
This would mean everyone kicking in an amount of money as a retainer.
So you might want to attend this klatch and pass the word along to all
other retirees.
Also I would appreciate you spreading the word about the party for
Sam MacDonald. Sam Macdonald has gotten her transfer to YSJ.
As a matter of fact, she has already gone. But she will return to pack
up and for a party in her honour. April 10 - 1500 hours

. Phil Pawsey sent this to the RAPCAN newsletter issued by Duane Frerichs
I have heard this before and think it is true but not completely sure.
Paying Attention
One of strangest "crashes" in aviation history, as related by noted
aviation author Ernest K. Gann, involved a PBY Catalina amphibian that
was being ferried to Europe by way of Greenland. Flying across the
Greenland icecap, the pilots were simply relying upon their view out
the windshield without watching and cross-checking their instruments.
The first indication that anything wrong was when they realized that
there was no sound of the plane passing through the air and that the
airspeed indicator read zero, even though engines were turning at normal
cruise power. Since the scenery as they flew over the icecap consisted of
nothing but white-on-white, their senses had fooled them into thinking
that they were flying straight and level when, in reality, they were in
a very slow descent.
The descent was so slow, in fact, that, at cruise power, they had
literally flown right onto the icecap. Their touchdown on a smooth,
snow-covered area was so light that they simply slid across the icecap
as the snow gradually reduced their speed until they came to a complete
standstill. The "landing" was so light and the slow-down so gradual that
neither pilot felt a thing.
When they realized what had happened, they shut down the engines and
jumped out onto the snow, laughing themselves silly.
Postscript: Their laughter didn't last long, though...because of all
the snow, they couldn't get up enough speed to take off again and spent
a couple of cold days waiting for a rescue party to arrive.

. Bob Robbins sends us these memories -
Subject: The Late Captain George Lothian
News of Captain George Lothian's death tugged my heartstrings.
He and I were members of Transatlantic Regional Operations Manager
Captain Maurice McGregor's management team.
Here's one happy memory:
In the early fifties Maurice often had Friday morning meetings of
the team. He and George loved their cigars, and each usually consumed
at least one per meeting.
One Friday George and Maurice lit up their stogies, and the meeting
ground along as usual. However on this morning Maurice seemed to find
that participation was steadily fading away. It took him a while to
notice that all eyes were on George, and a little while longer to see
that they were focussed on the lengthening ash on George's cigar.
It was only after the ash was at least four inches long, and it became
evident that George was puffing deeply and rapidly, that the meeting
collapsed in roars of laughter. George finally confessed, showing us
that he'd straightened a paper clip and buried it in the outer length
of his smoke!
Another memory of George....
One day in the fifties I was on the Dorval Trans-Atlantic ramp just
after a flight from the UK had arrived. George was the Captain, and I
noticed that he seemed to be searching the ramp for something.
When I asked if I could help he said that he was looking for the Station
Attendant who signalled his aircraft onto the ramp. I pointed out
Bob Sauberli, and then asked him if there was something wrong.
He said no, but that he'd been recently complaining about poor signals
by our Station, and Bob had done so well that he wanted to recognize a
significant improvement -- after probably more than 20 hours up and a
North Star Atlantic crossing! George was always a gentleman.
With fond memories

About the AC Family Network.
The AC Family Network is busy building a group of sites (a "Network" so
to speak) of special interest to the AC "Family".
The main site is at: www.acfamily.net with other complete web sites
beneath it. We "host" some of those other sites (for free) in order to
bring a broader range of content for all active or retired employees.
Some "sub" sites are independent from the AC Family Network and operated
by different administrators and webmasters who maintain separate member
lists for their own groups.
The NetLetter and A-Crew are part of the overall system and although
independently operated, we work together as a team to bring information
to all groups of all ages.
I hope this explains the setup better.
For further information please go to: http://www.acfamily.net/who.html

Air Canada will commence daily non-stop service between Toronto and

As of March 26, the Star Alliance members are:
Air Canada, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Ansett Australia,
Austrian Airlines Group, Lufthansa German Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines

RUMOURS AND TRUTHS
Rumour: AC will merge AC and CDN seniority lists.
Truth: This is false. The Company is not the custodian of seniority
lists.
They're owned and controlled by the Unions and their membership.
The final decision on whether to keep the lists separate or file
applications under the Canada Labour Code to merge them is ultimately
up to the Unions and their membership.
Rumour: Eighteen months after CDN migrates to RESIII, both AC and
CDN will revert to SABRE.
Truth: This is false. However, AC's long-term goal is to align its
reservations system with Star Alliance members. No decision
has been made on which system will be used.
Rumour: Due to the integration of AC and CDN, AC will introduce a
Weight and Balance office in Vancouver (YVR).
Truth: This is false. Air Canada will not start up a Weight and Balance
office in YVR. Details on the CDN Weight and Balance operation's
integration into AC is still under review.
Rumour: AC will now perform CDN's passenger service handling in the US.
Truth: CDN and CRA will be contracting passenger service handling from
AC at Newark (EWR), Houston (IAH), LaGuardia (LGA), Los Angeles
(LAX), Miami (MIA) and San Francisco (SFO). At other stations,
CDN and Canadian Regional Airlines (CRA) will remain with their
current provider or contract their work to United Airlines.

. Vesta, our Chief pilot thought this may be of interest -
March 8, 2000 OTTAWA, March 7 /CNW/ - NAV CANADA and Air Canada are
pleased to announce the completion of successful transatlantic
communication trials that will significantly improve the communication
between aircraft flying across the North Atlantic and the Gander Automated
Air Traffic Control System (GAATS). The traditional method of communication
with aircraft over the North Atlantic is via voice communications using
High Frequency (HF) radio where the quality varies depending on atmospheric
conditions. The increasing growth in the number of flights over the North
Atlantic further emphasizes the problems of HF communications due to
frequency congestion. The communication system known as ``Controller Pilot
Data Link Communications'' (CPDLC) replaces voice communication with a
digital communication link whereby a coded message, such as a position
report or a clearance, is transmitted. Messages are relayed between the
aircraft and controllers via satellites, air-ground stations and ground
networks. CPDLC introduces into the cockpit a communication system that
will provide faster, more reliable communication and help reduce pilot and
controller workload.

In Boston our flight was delayed at the terminal for about an
hour. When the plane finally taxied onto the runway the captain
came on the intercom to apologize. Making light of the issue,
he said, "Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to apologize for the
delay. It is crucial to the company that we provide the same
service to all of our customers. The ground crew was on break and
we had to wait for them to return to insure that the right number
of bags were sent to the wrong location."

stock. The service charge will then be collected at the
time of ticket issuance.
q. What will happen to people if Air Canada or Canadian no
longer flies to a station or the schedule is reduced?
will we do something about pass priorities?
a. We have examined a number of options in an attempt to
deal with this issue. we considered adjustments on
a system-wide basis as well as on those routes that
would be heavily impacted by flight reductions. as you
are aware, the two airlines have separate and distinct
pass policies, and travel privileges on each airline
are affected by company service dates. At this time,
we are unable to integrate both service dates into one
program.
q. What happens to our travel benefits for business and
personal travel?
a. There is no change to the current interline agreement.
employees can fly on both carriers as per the enhanced
reciprocal exchange of passes that were recently
announced.
q. Will our travel priorities be affected when travelling

a. There will be NO difference for Air Canada employees
travelling onStar Alliance carriers. Canadian airlines
personnel, however, could eventually enjoy similar
benefits once the two airlines become fully integrated.
q. I,m a commutter. what does this mean for my travel
priority?
a. On Air Canada flights your priority remains unchanged
however, the company considers commuting as part of
personal travel. Should Air Canada no longer fly to
a station or reduce the schedule, you will be able to
travel on Canadian airlines using your personal travel
priority but at a lower priority than Canadian airlines
employees.
The reverse would apply to Canadian airlines employees.
q. Can I use my trip pass ticket on CP operated code-sharing
flights?
a. Yes, trip pass tickets are accepted for travel on AC/CP
code-sharing flights. However, if the flight is operated
by CP, registration must be made through CP reservations
office.
Manchester/Glasgow situation
Whether travelling
there on direct flights or on one of our winter schedule,s
three weekly circle flights between Manchester-Glasgow
to/from Toronto, contingent travellers, including travel
Partners, cannot be accepted on board unless empty seats
are available from Manchester. Employees should make
alternate travel arrangements for themselves and travel
Partners before leaving home base.
AC/LH joint venture flight
Please note that AC employees and eligible family members
as of November 15 may fly on the AC/LH joint venture
flights by using their T-421 trip pass tickets. LH will
accept Parent/travel Partner tickets on T171 stock at
the Air Canada service charges. Travel Partner (max 2)
must be accompanied by the employee.
unaccompanied Partner travel is not recommended because
Partners travelling alone can,t purchase reduced rate
back-up tickets on other airlines.

. Roy Campbell sends us his bio -
I learned to fly at the Cranbrook Flying Club, Cranbrook BC in 1950.
I got my Private there and my Commercial at Vancouver with the
Vancouver's U-Fly. I was on the TCA F/O course in July, 1953.
My first base was Calgary on the DC-3's until spring of 1955 when
I transferred to Vancouver. I flew the Coast run on DC-3's, then the
Mountain run on North Stars. My Viscount debut came in 1957, the
aircraft I would be on for the next twelve years.
A move to Winnipeg happened in 1961; promotion to Captain status was
reached in 1965. The DC-9 was next in 1969, on which I remained until
1979 when I took early retirement to go into the Baptist ministry.
Winnipeg remained home until moving to Grand Forks, BC, in 1997,
my wife's home town.

. Remember when?
Gordon White has sent us some back copies of The Canadian Airline
Pilot magazine - here is one extract July 1963.
At midnight April 12th 1963, Trans-Canada Air Lines Douglas DC-3
CF-TES fin 391 touched down at Winnipeg International Airport to
herald the end of another chapter in the history of Canadian aviation.
For Captain Gerald Palmer, First Officer David Hennigar and
Stewardess Jean McIver, it was not only the end of another circuit
over the Prairie Milk Run, but an end of an era born more than
17 years before. It was the last DC-3 operation of by Canada's
national carrier. One pilot was heard to remark that if he got paid
by the number of landings rather than the number of flying hours in
the DC-3, he would be rich. Altogether the 30 DC-3's flew more than
875,000 hours and no DC-3 was ever involved in a passenger fatality
nor was any written off. They were retired honourably from TCA to
continue service with such organizations as DOT, Frontier Airlines,
Quebecair, Central Northern Airways, Matane Air Services, Gulf Aviation,
Rimouski Airlines and TransAir.
CF-TES msn 11906 fin 391 was sold to TransAir April 13th 1963 oo
Lambair Ltd in June 1967, withdrawn from service 1970 and sent to
the Western Canada Aviation Museum in Winnipeg where it is (was)
preserved in its original Trans-Canada Air Lines livery.

. Tail end.
CAN I GET A FOOT MASSAGE, TOO?
USA Today reported this week on the efforts by some airline pilots to
go the extra mile for passengers trapped on the ground by flight delays.
The "extra mile" is down the street to get hamburgers, pizza and other
fast food to help placate an increasingly restive (and hungry) flying
public when they are stuck at the gate. For example, one United Airlines
pilot whose plane diverted to Minneapolis-St. Paul in February phoned
Domino's from the cockpit, and had 15 jumbo pizzas brought to the rear
stairs to feed 105 unhappy passengers.
Airline managers are happy with such initiatives, as long as the pilots
pick up the tab.

. Ian Gardner sends this message from OZ -
Many thanks to both yourself and Terry and confirm that am receiving
letters regularly and find lots in them of interest particularly when
we receive very little Canadian news. Any movement as to changes in the
AC/CAI-story of particular importance e.g. plans of AC to operates
international route to Sydney, Aus.- as we were hoping to make a trip
to see our son later this year.
Meanwhile, for the record, a potted history of the 30 plus yrs spent
with the Company :
Joined TCA in Prestwick, Sep 1947 as P/A then Rsvns and finally Sales Rep.
In 1963 moved to HQ Sales and Marketing until l969 apart from two brief
spells at YHZ airport prior to moving to Prague beginning of 1970 to set up
Sales and Ops there for start of new service. Moved back to HQ again late
1970 again in Sales/Mktg prior to moving to MBJ part 72/73 before returning
to HQ in Planning and Industry Affairs, remaining there until retirement in
late ''77. Brief spell as consultant with Jim English in Cayman Islands in
'78 before moving to Geneva at end of year to join IATA for 2 years.
Finally retired to Scotland at start of l980 enjoying return to homeland
for 16 years but regular trips to OZ to see two daughters and families
finally persuaded us to move ourselves out to the sunshine in Tasmania. So
far no regrets whatsoever except that we are further away than ever from
son Neil and family in YQM.
Best regards and good wishes for the continuing good work in keeping us in
touch. Ian Gardner-------

From: Edward Hill
Subject: fight in cockpit
It was interesting to read about this "fight in cockpit" in your latest
newsletter.
It brings back memories when I was a DC-9 Capt. flying into YYT.
My F/O was Jean Guy Page and we were about 800ft on final when this
drunk came bursting into the cockpit and hammered me on the right side
of my head. I yelled at Jean Guy for help while I concentrated on flying
the airplane and making a decision whether to land or go around.
With all the commotion in the cockpit I decided to land and declared an
emergency. The tower got hold of the Mounties and when we stopped on the
runway the flt. attendant opened the front door and the Mounties
proceeded up the stairs. Meanwhile our attacker met the Mounties at the
door and cold cocked one of them and down the stairs he flew. The rest of
the Mounties finally subdued him and gave him the what for.
He was arrested and thrown in the local jail. Meanwhile I was laying
charges against him along with the Mounties. A few days later I received
a phone call from one of AC lawyers to ask me if I would consider
dropping the charges. I asked why and he advised me he was a priest on
holidays and he drank too much rum before leaving YHZ. Also the Mounties
worked him over that week-end. I reluctantly agreed and that was the end
of it.
Thought it might be interesting reading for your viewers.

TERMINATION OF ALASKA AIRLINES (AS) CODESHARE
CDN and AS have agreed they will end their codeshare on Aug. 20.
CATHAY PACIFIC (CX) CODESHARE ALSO ENDS IN AUGUST
CRA UPDATE
In response to employees concerns, CRA answered the following questions
from their employees this week:
Q. What is the status of the Regional integration process?
A. An integration structure has been formalized that outlines
responsibilities for core departments and sub teams. These teams are
working to find "quick wins" and synergies in our current operations,
as well as determine the best path forward as we move toward a single
Regional airline. In the meantime, we remained focused on the
priorities of maintaining safe and reliable operations, and
implementing the Summer 2000 Schedule.
Q. Is AA talking to the government about buying CRA?
A. Media reports indicate AA has been in discussion with the federal
government regarding foreign ownership laws. However, we have
received no indication of an interest to purchase CRA from any party.
THE TOP OF THE WORLD
The Ottawa Citizen recently reported that as early as next year,
Canadian airlines and their passengers could be saving significant time
and money flying non-stop to Asia over the top of the world and through
once-forbidden Siberian airspace via new polar air routes. The current
flight time for a Boeing 747-400 travelling from YYZ to DEL, via the
traditional North Pacific route, is 15 hours and 25 minutes. Nav Canada
estimates a more direct polar route would trim that by about 2 hours.
YVR to DEL would save 4 hours and NYC to HKG would save 5 hours.

'The cabin is done in an 18th century palace, with stunning decor,
fine furniture, bookcases, elegant columns, panelling and inlaid
wooden tables'.
Alas, such luxury was not being offered by an ultra-competitive
airline .. but on a B737 Boeing Business Jet.
