Bring alternate tickets if you're Barbados-bound. High passenger loads
create a strong possibility of denied boardings. In certain instances,
employees have waited days for a flight. Employees are urged to
purchase reduced rate tickets on other carriers before leaving their
home base. Make sure travel partners are fully aware of the travel
partner program and remind them they can only travel on an Air Canada
or Regional Carrier flight when travelling without the employee.

Rumour mill
Rumour: Air Canada (AC) intends to allow Canadian Airlines (CDN) to go bankrupt.
Truth: This is false. Air Canada has no such intentions.
Rumour: AC will participate in a computer purchasing program for its employees.
Truth: This is currently under investigation by AC. No decisions have been made.
Rumour: The Competition Bureau isn’t happy with the way the integration of
Air Canada (AC) and Canadian Airlines (CDN) is evolving.
Truth: This is false. AC has committed to meeting all requirements established by the
federal government and the Competition Bureau.
Rumour: AC and CDN Maintenance departments will be sold to another company at
the end of the “no-layoff” period in 2002.
Truth: Both AC and CDN have great reputations in the maintenance repair and
overhaul business. We have the opportunity to earn considerable profit by
doing work for third parties. Technical Operations is a profitable business and
there is no desire to sell it. Continued growth in profitable business is our best

. Our Chief Pilot found and sends this timely information -
Firm Offers Free Tool To Fight 'Love You' Virus
By Ken Fermoyle
A temporary free solution for the "I Love You" virus and its various
mutations, latest in the epidemic of malicious viruses, is available
from Binary Research International (BRI). Other sources also offer
information about and help stopping the virus.
The virus, called the "worst in history," began to appear as "Joke"
files and possibly other mutations within 24 hours or so of its birth.
It acts as a worm and those who use Microsoft's Outlook Express seem
to be most vulnerable.
Those interested in BRI's solution can download the e-mail content
filtering program MailMarshal directly from BRI's web site
www.binaryresearch.net/
Alternatively, Binary Research will ship the
software to those who prefer to receive it on CD. While the normal
evaluation period for MailMarshal is 21 days, Binary is offering to
extend that an additional three weeks to ensure the ""I Love You""
threat has subsided.
The widespread and devastating impact of the virus caught individuals,
governments and corporations of all size off guard. Estimates of lost
productivity and commerce as a direct result of this one virus attack
are in the billions of dollars-and still climbing.
I have not yet tested MailMarshal V.3, a third-generation e-mail
management software tool from Designer Technology Ltd., an Auckland
(NZ) software developer. I plan to do so ASAP but wanted to get this
word out quickly as possible because of the urgency of the virus
problem. Also, BRI's track record is excellent.
BRI is the former wholly-owned subsidiary of Binary Research Ltd. of
New Zealand, best known as the original developers of Ghost (now
Norton Ghost), the hard-disk cloning utility that was acquired by
Symantec Corp. in 1998. BRI is also the master distributor for
RemotelyAnywhere, SkunkLabs' Media Studio, Win², News Clipper and
WebMarshal.
Reportedly, MailMarschall offers immediate, simple, effective e-Mail
protection, without requiring users to download the latest virus
definition enhancement. By relying solely on an anti-virus solution,
organizations need to wait several hours or even days for a potential
fix.
"With its ability to scan incoming messages, MailMarshal denies or
quarantines messages based on a variety of criteria. It can control
the movement of commercially sensitive data and proprietary
information, give legal liability protection, block junk mail and
eliminate inappropriate use," a company spokesperson reports By
monitoring and controlling key words (lexical scanning), users or
system administrators can effectively remove the threat of malicious
viruses, including the current "I Love You".
One last word of caution, the equivalent of "Don't quit your day job!"
Don't ignore your other virus protection software. True, it sometimes
takes time for the virus-killers to work out and post their solutions,
but they remain valuable tools to help keep your system from being
vandalized.
Steve Bass, Pasadena IBM PC Users Group and PC World columnist offers
the following advice.
"You may have already received one [copy of the virus e-mail ]. If not,
be patient. Because the "I Love You" worm is heading your way.
"Two rules to follow: Update your virus file right now. Scan **every**
e-mail attachment before opening. If you're interested in the details,
read PC World's New article
<www.pcworld.com/pcwtoday/article/0,1510,16582,00.htm>. Or look behind
the scenes with Steve Gibson <www.grc.com> compilation below.
The PC World article reads in part:
"Like the Love Letter virus, the variant spreads when the 10307-byte
attachment is opened. In the original version, the message text reads,
'kindly check the attached LOVELETTER coming from me.' In both
versions, the .vbs extension indicates a Visual Basic Script. If you
open the attachment, the script inserts a number of files into Windows
system directories. The virus then sends a copy of itself to all the
addresses in a Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express directory."

. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -
Air Alliance (aka Air Georgian) started up new non-stop service between YYZ and
Akron-Canton OH today with three flights per business day being offered using their
Beech 1900D aircraft. These flights will be sold in CRS systems as "Air Canada" flight numbers feeding into the latter's hub at Toronto.
A Cathay Pacific Airways A340-300 made history recently when it flew non-stop
from Toronto to Hong Kong using the new Polar 2 route. The flight (CX829) departed
YYZ at 0102hrs local time on the 18th and covered the distance of 7221 nautical miles
in 14hours and 59 minutes. The aircraft arrived at its gate in HKG at 0421hrs local time,
cutting almost three hours off the usual journey time with a tech stop in Anchorage.
The flight goes straight north from YYZ to Hudson Bay and on towards the Arcitc
Ocean passing within 50 nm of the North Pole, before heading south towards Russia,
Mongolia, central China and into Hong Kong. Currently this route is experimental and
won't be ready for regular use until Russia is able to upgrade their computers for ATC
coverage and teaching of enough controllers in basic English.

When the HMS Triumph, an aircraft carrier, entered Venice harbour on a visit several
years ago, it was necessary to turn completely around 180 degrees. With not enough
tugs available, the captain ordered 10 Firefly fighter aircraft tied down on the aft deck,
and 10 Seafire aircraft tied down on the forward deck facing the opposite way to the
aircraft at the aft. Using the propeller thrust of the tied down aircraft, the carrier was
eased through the 180 degrees, and then, repositioning one set of aircraft, moved
the vessel sideways about 300 feet to it's moorings off St. Mark's Square.

When the HMS Triumph, an aircraft carrier, entered Venice harbour on a visit several

and 10 Seafire aircraft tied down on the forward deck facing the opposite way to the
aircraft at the aft. Using the propeller thrust of the tied down aircraft, the carrier was
eased through the 180 degrees, and then, repositioning one set of aircraft, moved
the vessel sideways about 300 feet to it's moorings off St. Mark's Square.

AIR CANADA PIONAIRS 23RD ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
MINI-MINUTES
I can only describe the theme of AGM 2000 as smaller turnout, bigger enthusiasm.
It almost appeared that a sense of relief was present because everyone realized that finally, Air Canada was #1 in the nation and rightly so.
The opening night reception featured the outrageously dressed and somewhat talented
PIONAIR PLAYERS from the Montreal District with a couple of imports from the Toronto District. They sang 5 familiar tunes that had the words changed to suit their
Pionair audience. Three cheers for Pam Rosholt for her efforts to put the show together!
The Business Meeting, the morning of the 29th went as scheduled (we finished on time). Reports from Norm Stoddart on finances and Bill Fisher on membership were both upbeat.
We should see a small surplus in our bank account at the end of August and our membership is approaching 6,500.
Leo Goulet gave his last report as Pension & Benefits Representative after serving
the Pionairs for 8 years, longer than anyone else on the Pionair Executive Board.
Leo advised that an actuarial assessment of the Air Canada Pension Fund as of
January 1999 found it was underfunded by $210 million . If this picture remains
unchanged, Air Canada would have to contribute $40 million a year for the next
5 years to make up the shortfall. The January 1999 snapshot of the Fund does not
take into account that the fund earned over $700 million over the balance of 1999.
Our thanks to Leo for his efforts over the years and we wish he and Marylin all the
best in their new retirement. We are very pleased to announce that Bill Rowe will be
the new Pionairs Pensions and Benefits Representative effect May 1, 2000.
Of major interest was the report of Kay Napolitano on the results of the 1st ever National Survey of the Pionairs. Pionairs were asked for their thoughts on the format
of our AGMs and the effectiveness of the District Newsletters. The majority opinion
voiced support for the present AGM format, but found the cost of attending was becoming a problem. District Newsletters were well received but a greater frequency was requested with more information from the Executive Board in them.
The last item on the morning agenda was the announcement of the site for the 2001 AGM.
To the obvious delight of the audience Calgary will be the host city for the 24th AGM.
The USA District meeting in the afternoon was characterized with the usual expert commentary by Pete Pemberton on the US Pension Plan and the almost complete turn around from last years criticism of Great West Life, to praise this year for handling Pionair claims.
The Dinner/Dance on Saturday evening was a grand affair with Pionairs dancing to the music of the great Dal Richards Big Band Orchestra.
The Business Meeting Sunday morning featured a panel made up of Vicki Benoit, Manager Industry Travel, Doug Lovat, Director of Pensions and Employee Benefits,
and Sue Welscheid, Vice President People. Ms. Benoit focused on items such as: the 30 year Anniversary pass not being retroactively offered to employees retiring before 1987, the acceptance of Air Canada passes on Air Georgian and Central Mountain Air, the delivery of delayed baggage directly to the home of retirees and refund of USA transborder charges for Air Canada personnel and retirees transiting the US.
Doug Lovat spoke on the new premium schedule for the Plan 2 Health Care Program and the prohibitive level of these premiums if eye care were to be added. Much broad statistical data was also offered on a province by province basis detailing costs of the Plan. After the formal part of the session Vicki, Doug and Sue handled questions from Pionairs on a personal, one on one basis.
The closing Banquet Sunday evening featured Sue Welscheid who spoke on the tremendous challenge and daunting task facing the Company integrating the workforces of Air Canada and Canadian Airlines. It is admirable, to say the least, that the people who are charged with this task are meeting the challenge with great resolve. Sue also showed a video featuring Robert Milton speaking on the commitment of the Air Canada team to see a totally successful conclusion to the task at hand. The text of Sue speech is available to all Pionairs through your District Director and a copy of the video of
Robert Milton's address will also be made available to interested Pionairs through your District Director as well.
Of note in conclusion, the District Directors at a meeting the day prior to the AGM voted for action on increasing Pionair membership which the Executive Board will
act on.
On the matter of integrating the Canadian Airlines Retirees into the Pionairs, this will
require more lead time than first anticipated and I would ask all Pionairs to bear with us as we make our way through a very complicated process.
The enthusiasm is already building for AGM 2001. It will be bigger, more exciting, and even cheaper than we've had for a long time.
See you all in Calgary May 18th to 20th, 2001.
Saville Hambleton,
President, Air Canada Pionairs

Milan & Rome / Paris - Route Switch Off
Air Canada (AC) is cancelling the wet lease arrangement with Canadian
Airlines (CP) to operate to Milan and Rome for the Summer 2000
schedule. Earlier this year, they announced route switches with CP
that would have seen AC operate to Milan and Rome while CP flew some
of AC's flights to Paris.
AC/CP route swaps are found elsewhere in the new integrated schedule.
However, bilateral agreements between Canada, France and Italy
required the use of CP call signs and flight numbers on flights
operated by AC to Milan and Rome, as well as the use of AC call signs
and flight numbers on CP to Paris. However following discussions with
the Air Canada Pilots Association (ACPA), the flights to Rome and
Milan will be moved back to Canadian, and Air Canada will take the
flight to Paris.
The decision was made in light of ACPA's position that wet lease
payments were required on the route-swap, which would effectively
double pilot costs, and prevent the arrangement from being financially
viable.
Addressing overbooking concerns:
We've all seen several media reports over the past few days concerning
overbooking problems reported by the media, on behalf of the public.
While we are trying to explain the realities of the situation to the
press, the facts we offer have not always been reported. Here's the
some of the more important information we have been giving to
reporters, which may or may not have appeared in the stories you've
seen:
On any given flight, on any given day, airlines are able to
historically track the number of "no-shows" for a flight, thereby
allowing carriers to sell seats that may have otherwise been left
empty. No-show factors can vary from as much as 5-20% on a select
route. While airlines operate as close to the line as possible, it is
rare for an airline or airport to have more than a handful of denied
boardings on a daily basis.
Unfortunately, the integration of Air Canada and Canadian Airlines has
made previous tracking unreliable, and on occasion at airports across
the system, traditional no-show factors have simply not materialized.
In addition, a number of information technology problems associated
with the integration, have resulted in instances where one system has
continued to sell seats on a flight that was already full. The
majority of exceptional denied boarding circumstances of the past week
have been a direct result of glitches experienced within these
information technology systems. We continue to monitor this closely,
but have hopefully eliminated the IT problems that have been the root
cause of many of these problems.
·Despite perceptions to the contrary, Air Canada's rate of passengers
who have been involuntarily denied boarding year-to-date as of March
2000, is essentially unchanged from 1999.
·When compared to the top 10 US carriers, Air Canada's rate of
passengers denied boarding is less than half that of the US airlines.
These are expressed in terms of "denied boardings" per 10,000
passengers. In 1999, Air Canada's rate was 8.9/10,000 passengers
compared to the US average of 20.5/10,000 passengers.
·Of over 4.1 million passengers who flew on Air Canada for the first
quarter in 2000, 4,628 were denied boarding. While this is a
relatively small number of passengers given the overall volume of
passengers travelling, it can still be improved. We continue to work
on decreasing the number of passengers inconvenienced.
·We are in the process of reviewing our overbooking standards on
routes where there have been increased numbers of denied boardings
over the past month, outside of the current IT problems. We will be
adjusting our reservation systems accordingly to accommodate these
changed circumstances and new booking patterns.

. From your co-pilot.
One of the criteria used by airlines to gauge success is the all important load factor,
this is the number of seats filled out of the number available.
Seems like American Airlines have finally solved this problem. Their average load factor
is in the region of 70%. By removing seats, ostensibly to give more leg room, their
load factor zooms right up to the 85% mark or so. All this without giving better
service, more food, more free drinks etc - and it puts them at the top of the heap as far
as load factors go, making them appear as a very successful airline - now that's food for
thought!
Naturally, if our airline did that there would be no room for us cons would there?

. Alan MacLeod sarts us off with the first report of the season -
Subject: Lockheed CF-TCC "Tango Charlie Charlie" UPDATE
We flew TCC from Winnipeg to Montreal on the 27th and 28th of April.
The aircraft is in pristine condition, as usual, after winter storage in
Winnipeg. This didn't happen accidentally. It happened because Winnipeg
maintenance staff volunteered extra work time to ensure its
airworthiness.
Capt. Patry, Capt. Norberg and myself did our recurrent training on the
aircraft in St. Andrews over a two day period. Capt. Patry and I then
ferried the aircraft to Dorval via Thunder Bay (over night), Sault St.
Marie, Muskoka, where we picked up Capt.Ted Dodds. Then on to Toronto
Island and Dorval. Capt. Dodds did his recurrent training enroute to Dorval, and also in Kingston.
The same grooming crew that volunteered their time to wash, clean and polish the aircraft
last year, did it again over a four day period in Dorval. They (the grooming crew) will be
treated to a local flight for a breakfast in the Laurentians later this summer.
You see, this crew works midnight shifts and volunteer to stay after their shift to work on
TCC. They do this for four days running. When TCC is back in Dorval, we plan to take
them for their breakfast flight--like last year.
Capt. Harvey Reid and I flew the aircraft to Downsview, on the 5th of May, so it could be
present at the Toronto Aviation Trade show. It was a GREAT success there with over
500 people visiting it over the 3 day period. DREAMS TAKE FLIGHT staff in attendance
there, have booked the aircraft to capacity for June.
On May the 10th TCC was at the departure ramp along with 195 children for their flight
to Disneyworld on an A340 aircraft. It was a spectacular departure show with fire trucks,
helicopters, police cars etc.
The aircraft is now in Toronto and will remain there until it goes to Muskoka on May the
26th. It is planned to fly there for DREAMS TAKE FLIGHT and participate in the
Muskoka Air Fest weekend on the 27th and 28th. from there it come back to Montreal
for the first weekend in June.

Eastern 702: "Tower, Eastern 702 switching to Departure...by the way,
as we lifted off, we saw some kind of dead animal on the far end
of the runway."
Tower: "Continental 635, cleared for takeoff, contact Departure on 124.7...did you
copy the report from Eastern?"
Continental 635: "Continental 635, cleared for takeoff...and yes, we copied Eastern
and we've already notified our caterers."

flying when he's with a woman.

PIPER MALIBU
It was a really nice day, right about dusk, and a Piper Malibu was being vectored into
a long line of airliners in order to land at Kansas City.
KC Approach: "Malibu three-two-Charlie, you're following a 727, one o'clock and
three miles.'
Three-two-Charlie: "We've got him. We'll follow him."
KC Approach: "Delta 105, your traffic to follow is a Malibu, eleven o'clock and three
miles. Do you have that traffic?"
Delta 105: ( long pause and then in a thick southern drawl ):
"Well ... I've got something down there. Can't quite tell if it's a Malibu or a
Chevelle, though."
