. We have another CF-TCC update from Alan MacLeod -
The latest on Tango Charlie Charlie is as follows.
While in Montreal, hangared in what use to be known as the "DC-8" hangar, TCC had
some worthwhile grooming and replacing of interior fittings.
The Interior Finishing Shop removed the curtains, all the seat covers, cushions and
carpeting. They were all laundered. The aft bulkhead was recovered with new vinyl, as
the original from 1984-85 re-furbishing was becoming a bit worse for wear. This was done
at the suggestion of the Forman, in the finishing shop. His name is DIDIER PIRON. His assistants who helped with the work are DANIEL De LAFONTAINE and SYLVAIN BRODEUR. They also volunteered to replace the headliner. A tip of the hat to these guys who worked on their time off to do this job. I plan to take them on a breakfast flight to Lachute, and I have a rain check for the new headliner installation !!.
On the 15th of June the aircraft flew to Ottawa for DREAMS flying weekend of 16,17,and
18th. First day was at Uplands, then last two days from the museum at Rockliffe.
Flights were full and 127 people had a flight over Ottawa and the surrounding area.
Capt. Gerry Norberg and Mike Clarkson, AME from Winnipeg, volunteered their time.
Good for them.
TCC then went to Oshawa, after DREAMS flying, on the 18th. It was leased to a company, CINE NOVA. Cine Nova, a Canadian firm, had been contracted to make a TV documentary on the life of Amelia Earheart . For three days TCC flew out of Oshawa. Then the filming crew packed up their trucks and proceeded to "Beacon Hill Air Park". Beacon Hill is the residence of Capt. Ken Patry, in the Nobelton area.. There the filming crew used Ken's Cessna 195 as well as another one belonging to retired Capt Don "Smoke" Patry, for further filming for two days. Amelia Earheart flew a Lockheed Vega aircraft for years. It is similar to the Cessna 195 in appearance. The documentary will be on the History channel early this fall. It also will be distributed by a French TV production company in France, and around
the world, in fifteen different languages. Tango Charlie Charlie is becoming more famous!!
((For you Amelia Earheart affectionados, Chapter 12 in the book 'More Than A Pilot'
by Don McVicar has some information you may find interesting - eds))
Weekend of June 22, 23,24 and 25th saw the aircraft in Toronto. It flew from the Toronto
Island City Center Airport for DREAMS. One hundred and forty four (144) folks had a flight over the weekend. All were ecstatic and happy---even a couple of folks that became airsick in the bumpiness!!.
The passenger that takes first prize, to date as coming the longest way to fly on TCC,
and support DREAMS TAKE FLIGHT, flew this weekend. His name is HERMAN DE WOLFE. Herman heard about TCC on the TCC web site. He lives near Bussells in Belgium and bought an airline ticket to come to Toronto to fly and support TCC.
Thank you Herman ! Incidentally, Linda Huttson, DREAMS coordinator in Toronto, invited Herman to stay at her home during his visit to help keep his costs down. Good for you Linda. Herman's picture with TCC will appear on the TCC website later on.
AME Denis Savoie, from Winnipeg volunteered his time to be with TCC. Capt. Ted Dodds and Capt. Ken Patry, on vacation, volunteered their time to fly over the weekend.
TCC is now in Toronto Island, Shell hangar. It will next go to Summerside for the COPA
(Canadian Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association) convention. This is the third time TCC
has been invited to their convention. It will fly, while there, to help raise funds for the new Prince County hospital, as supported by COPA.

From: Derek & Pearl Piers <
Subject: ROME
Hello from Halifax
You may remember a few months back when I was asking for info on hotels
in Rome. Well.........we've been there and back and think I should tell you that Rome
is a great destination.
We found the Hotel Trastevere, in the Trastevere area of Rome............centre of Rome
within walking distance of the Vatican, Coliseum, Forum, Ruins, etc., etc. Phone
39.06.58.14.713, FAX 39.06.58.81.016. Highly recommend.
Rates very reasonable at L150,000 for a double room......we had two bedrooms with
double beds in each, bathroom, dressing room, loads of closet/storage space, and
in one bedroom a small fridge, stove, sink, cupboard with all the dishes.
You could move in to this place for a year. Very clean, and very secure.....lots of
keys to lock doors. Owners/or Managers very friendly, spoke perfect English.
A single room is L120,000, triple room L180,000, and quadruple room L200,000.
Drive from the airport to the hotel was a bit hair-raising at 160 kms, @L85,000.
Since we were leaving our hotel at 5:30 am to return to the airport we booked the hotel
taxi. Turned out to be beautiful large Mercedes, excellent driver/Tour Guide who spoke
perfect English........ will show you around Rome for a few hours, a day, will give you a
guided tour to any part of Italy, for 1 or 2 weeks if you wish. His commentary from our
hotel to the airport was both humorous and informative. Highly recommended.
Trip from hotel to the airport cost L120,000............well worth it.
Rome is AMAZING. We were awed by the Vatican and St. Peter's. Can think of only
one word............Magnificent!!!!! We saw the Pope who was speaking to the people from
a canopied stage in St. Peter's Square. This was the day prior to, and the start of, his
80th birthday celebrations.
He "welcomed the people from Canada".......we felt truly welcomed!
Food was excellent. Many many restaurants in the Trastevere area, and we ate in a
different one each day.
Only down side to our visit was an encounter with the gypsy's.......who stole my
husband's wallet from a deep front pocket in his shorts while we were touring the
Coliseum, Forum, or somewhere. Realized it was gone when he reached in his pocket
to pay for lunch. Those gypsy's are "very good at their job" and it will take an expert to
hold on to a wallet if they want it.
Upside to the story.........the Canadian Consulate were very helpful. Among the items
missing, besides money and VISA card was the driver's license. We had an AVIS car
rented in England.......so the Consulate office gave us a letter confirming the stolen
driver's license, the license number and all necessary info .............and thus we were
able to carry on that part of our trip uninterrupted.
To get to Rome via LHR we purchased tickets through employee call centre..........guess
they were ZED fare..........which were good on both Alitalia and British Airways.
The two airlines fly, one per hour approximately, to and from Rome from Heathrow.
British Airways seemed to be full both ways. Alitalia (when I phoned to register) were
wide open both directions and on the day of flight they were still wide open......so.......we
flew Alitalia Heathrow-Rome-Heathrow. Excellent service and loved their beautiful green
decor and flight crew uniforms. Flights were 1 1/2 - 2 hours.
The service at check-in and departures in Heathrow were par-xcellence......
......specifically Air Canada, but also Alitalia.
Our headquarters in England was The White Hart Hotel, High Street, Dorchester-On-
Thames, Oxfordshire, OX10 7HN. Ancient coaching inn, very clean, comfortable, and
staff very friendly and accommodating. Delicious food. Very beautiful area.
Highly recommended. A bit more expensive than Rome.
Cheers.............Pearl Piers
(It has been suggested that photocopies of all your documents should be made and a
copy left at home and carry one copy to leave in the hotel safe. This will help with
getting quick replacements - eds)

Changes in effect when listing for standby and Family Affair for self-ticketing active and retired employees only. It seems everyone is calling General Reservations! Self-ticketing active and retired employees from Air Canada, Canadian Airlines, and their respective regional carriers purchasing a Family Affair ticket or wanting to list for personal standby travel can call the local General Reservations office or the Employee Call Centre. Booking business travel and non self-ticketing activities, such as requests or changes to ZED fares, parent, or travel partner passes must be done by Employee Call Centre agents.

. Albert Siegmann responds to the subject of 'Renaming Dorval' -
About the renaming of Dorval Airport I must say that, despite the fact that I admire the
Rocket Maurice Richard for his performances on the ice and respect him for his life off
the ice. I disagree with the renaming of the airport to his name. He had the honor to have
a nice and large arena to his name during his life time, I would not mind at all if they
rename a street, a park or anything else to his name, but an airport please no!
If the Dorval Airport has to be renamed there are plenty of Canadian aviation pioneers
who have worked very hard to bring the Canadian Aviation to where it his now. I could
name quite a few but I will leave that to more qualified peoples.
Incidentally I very much appreciated the story by Rob Robbins in a recent Netletter about
the origin of the Chicago O''Hare Airport name. Butch O'Hare was a real aviation hero.

Danka and Conrad Karsen send us this information.
Subject: Ireland Holiday
Just back from a marvelous two weeks in County Cork, Ireland, and thought we would
pass this on.
Picked from an ad in Horizons, we called John and Madeleine Hurley (she is a CSA at
Pearson) about renting their house on Dunworley Bay, on the south coast, West Cork.
It was really special. The house itself is fully equipped with modern European appliances,
three bedrooms, although the third is suitable for one person only. There is a living room
with a fireplace, love the smell of peat in the evening, dining area and kitchen, bath with
tub and shower and the small caravan outside holds a BBQ, lawn chairs, etc.
A firm gravel parking circle surrounds the house.
The site itself is truly spectacular, at the very end of a winding country road, high on a
cliff, overlooking Clonakilty and Dunworley Bays and surrounded by fields on the other
three sides. Green takes on a whole new meaning here. Sunsets are memorable.
It stays light until 2200 or so. Expecting rain, the weather couldn't have been better
20 May through 02 June, sunny and warm during the day and rain occasionally at night.
A special sight is the rain approaching across the Bay.
Walking in the fields or down to the beaches is a great way to spend an hour or so early
in the morning or evening. At high tides the sea is crashing on the rocks while at low the
beach is extensive. Lots of birdlife.
It's a short drive to the village of Timoleague, where there is a centuries old abandoned
Abbey, 600 people, 6 pubs, a butcher, bakery, gas station/convenience store, post office
and an off license store for items of a liquid nature to be consumed at home.
Lots of small towns within a 40km radius, Clonakilty, Kinsale, Schull, Glandore all quaint
for sightseeing and purchases. The drive along the coast is worth the thrill a minute
narrow roads. Cork, a small city, is about 40 minutes away and if you want to see Dublin,
the 2hr 30min train ride from Cork is the way to go. A return trip ticket is good for 5 days
although we wanted to get back to Dunworley.
Seafood was excellent, in Kinsale, and in Glandore, the Glandore Inn (dine outside
overlooking the harbour or inside if you prefer the pub atmosphere or it's raining),
the Courtyard Bar in Schull and for haute cuisine, the culinary school Ballymalloy (at
Shanagarry) reservations a must. If you leave early enough for Ballymolloy, you can
stop at Blarney Castle for that rock kissing thing. Lots of pubs in all these towns and
villages, some serve a noonish meal but few have evening fare.
Some of the pubs have entertainment in the evenings, De Barra for one, in Clonakilty.
No problems with a ZZ fare on EI, LHR-ORK-LHR once you get to LHR. A little flexible
and we had no real problem ex LHR for Canada on AC.

Aubrey Winterbotham of WACA sends this -
After just having returned from Mauritius through Paris, I thought I would let your readers
know about the existence of the Cocoons at Charles de Gaulle airport.
They are located in Terminal 1 and cost 200 French francs per couple for a 12 hour stay.
It is a room with a bed, a TV set and a shower and is ideal for someone connecting with
a flight that requires a place to lie down, have a shower and put on a fresh shirt.
You are not allowed to stay more than a day or overnight, it is not a hotel.
There is free shuttle bus service between the terminals.
Visiting Europe?
The following cities fall within the 751 - 1600 mile range for ZED fares from LHR.

. Need to know.
Integrated employee travel policy news. For the peak summer period, the Family Affair program remains unchanged—it’s valid on Air Canada or Regional Carrier operated flights only, and Air Canada’s travel partner and Canadian Airlines’ guest travel programs can’t be extended on the other carrier. Effective today, boarding priority for all active employees will be based on Company service date and retired employees on length of service, rather than the current practice of time of check-in or date of registration. Air Canada and its Regional Carrier employees will travel on Canadian Airlines with an S4J6 boarding priority—the same as Canadian Airlines’ retirees with less than 25 years service. Canadian Airlines and Canadian Regional Airlines’ employees will travel on Air Canada and its Regional Carriers with a C4/Y10 boarding priority—the same as Air Canada’s Regional Carrier employees.
Changes are in effect when listing for standby and Family Affair travel. Increasing number of calls have recently added to the challenge of keeping call wait times for active and retired employees to a minimum. Effective today, active and retired employees purchasing a Family Affair ticket or wanting to list for standby travel can call the local General Reservations office or the Employee Call Centre. This initiative is part of the Call Centre’s two-year project called Call Centre Automation Initiatives.

. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -
On June 5th Canadian Airlines introduced another one of their recent acquisitions to
YYZ with the appearance of another leased 767-3H5 (FIN 651) ex ZK-NCM.
The aircraft arrived from and departed to Vancouver.
The aircraft is actually leased to Air Canada by ITOCHU AirLease, but operated by
Canadian Airlines.
After the collapse of the proposed merger between KLM and Alitalia it is now evident
that KLM is talking to British Airways about a possible merger, that would create the
world's third-largest airline. The combined airline would be valued at more than
$7.5billion with a fleet of almost 600 aircraft.

. Update on ACFamily.net web site from Tom Grant -
Just to let you know a new item has been added to the Airshared portion of the A-Crew and RAPCAN websites. We know some of you are new to the Internet so we thought we could help you out by having a webpage with helpful tips.
When you log onto either website you will find a separate link on the About Us page called "Internet Tips." This link will take you to a listing on "virus control", "email" and "websites of note."
Viewers are invited to make submissions to add to the tips. However, for discuss or questions you are referred to the Conference Area on the ACFamily Network website at www.acfamily.net.
The HEADLINE NEWS is a feature of the A-Crew and RAPCAN websites.
This service was put online to complement existing email news services you receive.
It has been just over a month since we started this service.
We have been please with the response from readers so far and the time-frame for
putting news online from varied Internet sources has been met.
What is the advantage of this feature to our readers:
1. Relevant articles to our readership base such as: Canadian commercial aviation,
aviation travel, Air Canada news, and Canadi>n news. However, articles are not
limited to these areas, for example, an article relating to the Internet may be posted
if it is relevant to our readers and their use of the World Wide Web and email.
2. The postings are current as possible given the resources available to our website.
The feature is updated once, sometime three times, daily during the week depending
on the rate of relevant news that comes in.. Articles over ten days are usually deleted,
except some articles relating to Air Canada and Canadi>n that may be relevant for a
longer period of time. However, most articles will be offline after 30 days.
3. The format is a "headline" format. In that we mean a headline is given in a listing on
the opening page. The reader can then make a decision on whether to read further.
If so, a link to a full article or abstract is given. If the link is to an abstract, there is
usually a link on that specific page to further details. And once again the reader can
decide whether or not to read more. This format saves the reader from scrolling through
lines and lines of text to see what is online.
4. The news is online 24 hours a day 7 days a week so the readers can view the
headlines at their convenience.
We do not presume to be a "wire service", more of a clipping service in a sense.
For those that would like to be inundated with news, there are innumerable services on
the Internet that one can subscribe to.
We hope you will find this website feature useful and as always your comments are
appreciated.

BRITISH AIRWAYS HOLDING TALKS WITH KLM...
In the 1990s, it was merger-mania time for the major aerospace companies, and now
it looks like this may be the decade of airline mergers. With economic pressure in
the airline industry leading to numerous consolidations, British Airways is holding
informal merger discussions with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
The discussions take place amid the proposed $11.6-billion takeover of US Airways
by UAL, parent of United Airlines.

I would like information about doing a tour of the South Pacific Islands.
Any information ie where can I write to for a suggested itinerary by air to cover the area.
Would like a package deal of some kind. I believe that there is a price for air travel
covering many Islands. Is there an Airline that does this or a travel agent somewhere.
Would appreciate any thing so that I can make a start on planning.

I GUESS I SHOULDA SAID "HELLO, JACK" INSTEAD:
A simple greeting to a man named Jack on a bizjet caused an uproar at Oakland
International Airport outside Detroit, Mich., on Monday. "There was a guy on the
plane named Jack, and someone walked in and said, 'Hi, Jack,'" police Lt. Rick Crigger
said. "The mike just happened to be open and the tower heard it." Thinking someone
might be hijacking the corporate jet, controllers called in the local police and SWAT
team.
Back in the days before altitude alerters were mandatory, but with
altitude reporting installed, a crew was climbing their BAC 1-11 up to
an assigned altitude of 17,000 feet. At about 17,700 feet, the pilot
flying noticed the inadvertent altitude bust and started back down
towards 17,000.
Just as he was getting ready to level off, ATC called: "NXXXXX, say
your altitude."
The fast-thinking captain replied, "Just passing through 17,000."
Whereupon the faster-thinking controller asked, "Which way?"

. Need to know.
We received this information from Industry Travel to clarify priorities on CP which was the
subject of a previous NetLetter -
All AC retired employees are processed on an S4J6 priority, same as
AC active employees when travelling on CP. S4J6 is the priority
given to CP retired employees with less than 25 years of service.
CP policy gives a better priority to their active employees and
retirees with 25 years+ of service. We will all go after them in
the same manner as they will ALL be carried on C4/Y10 basis while
we travel with C2/Y10, regardless whether their retirees have 25
years or less.
It is unfortunate of course that this can cause an impact on the
routes no longer operated by AC. However, on the new AC routes, we
will be boarded BEFORE THEM.

Ray Steven sends this query -
In an Employee Travel letter, dated December 1999, Vicki Benoit, Manager,
Industry Travel, specifically item 11, entitled Future Projects, outlined
future improvements to Air Canada's travel programs. In this item, she states
- "By the year-end, Air Canada employees and retirees wishing to register
space available travel will be able to use a voice activated system called
"Speech Recognition". This system can be used to register for flights as well
as check flight schedules and obtain load information".
I was wondering whether this project is on schedule and will be available by
"year-end 2000", and whether one will be able to use a touchtone telephone,
with prompts, to access the information on loads, be able to list and/or
cancel listings, as is common with other carriers systems?
Ray Stevens,
Industry travel informs us -
The Employee Call Centre in collaboration with Industry Travel will be implementing this
fall (instead of summer) the Speech Recognition system that will permit all active
and retired employees (who can self-ticket T421 trip pass tickets) to register for flights as
well as cancel listings, check flight schedules and obtain load information.
When it comes closer to implementation time, all active and retired employees, including
widows/ers will receive a communication package including their PIN number to access
this system.

A thousand thanks for your NetLetter dedicated to the memory of Jim Bain.
I thought you might enjoy what you caused in me! Thanks again, guys, for the joys
you bring to me.
Ken Denman, ex-Sales in TCA/AC also enjoys reading each issue.
Bob sent this personal message to Alan Bain, and kindly gave permission for us to include
it in a NetLetter -
"Hello Alan
What a delightful contribution you made to the Netletter!
Many thanks for making it available to so many of the people whose lives were touched
(or more!) by your Dad.
I joined TCA in 1940 as a radio operator, and then as Station Manager at several points.
The last one was at the Montreal Trans-Atlantic terminal. In the early fifties I was
loaned to the Management Development Group for "two years" -- and stayed in training
and organization development assignments until taking early retirement in ''72.
One of those assignments was to work with Jim and his management team during and
after the period of McKim's organization development consulting. We came to know each
other very well, often sharing thoughts and wishes of personal nature.
I remember that for some time he wished he had a Rolls Royce automobile, and finally
settled for a Bentley. I got a kick out of his pride in giving me a ride in it. How I wish I
could have given him the keys to try out my recently-acquired Lexus -- the latest in a
series of Toyotas!
After retiring from AC, I worked in the Federal Government in Ottawa for eight years -
doing much similar work to that in AC's.
I hope you and yours are healthy and happy.
Sincerely"
Robert M. Robbins

Subject: Dorval Airport rename
I think I heard on TV that the citizens of Montreal want to rename
Dorval International Airport
to
Maurice (Rocket) Richard International Airport.
They have my vote.
And I worked there from 1953 to 1970 and loved every moment, rain or freezing
rain, snow or snowbound. And of course, I was a 'Rocket' fan.
I didn't know how much I cared til I watched his funeral last week.
I hope a lot of our readers will agree to the name change.

. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn-
Skyservice Airlines announced on May 31st that effective in November this year they
will switch over to become a scheduled airline. They will install a 2-class seating
arrangement in their A320s and A330 aircraft and connect major cities across Canada.
They are expected to announce which major airline and airline alliance group they will be
joining up with and speculation is rampant that it will be the oneWorld alliance
organization. They will also announce a new name for this airline. This would help to
provide feed traffic for both American Airlines and British Airways throughout Canada.
The airline is planning to connect Halifax in the east with Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto,
Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver.
They will also fly to select U.S.A. cities, but none were named.
JetBlue Airlines, the new startup at New York JFK has been talking to the Air Canada Technical Operations people about long-term A320 maintenance requirements.
JetBlue hope to have a large fleet of A320s in service within their first couple of years.

Australian Association of Retired Airline Pilots (excerpts)
You have probably heard about the famous 617 Squadron Dambuster's raid,
which blew up one of the dams on a German river. A so-called "bouncing
bomb" invented by Barnes Wallis did this. What is generally not known is his
reading of the exploits of a crew of 635 Squadron that gave him the idea.
It happened this way:-
We were in our Lancaster, T for Tommy, getting near our target with a full
bomb load, flying through a lot of flak. Over the Ruhr a piece of flak went
through the starboard under-carriage door and blew out a tyre. We were near
the target and all pretty busy, but Len our pilot came on the intercom and
said "Chuck, you've got nothing to do for the next little while, I'll lower
the undercart, you go out and change the tyre. (Chuck was our wireless op.)
So Chuck reeled in his trailing antenna, tied the end around his waist,
grabbed the spare tyre, put it around his neck, climbed down under Willie
our Flight Engineer, and went through the front turret.
Now Chuck, using the tire iron which was part of the Lanc repair kit, pried
the blown tyre of the rim and let it fall. Then with the spare in position
around the rim, he signaled for Len to roll the Lanc violently to port,
which literally jammed the new tyre on the rim. Geoff, our navigator went to
Chuck's position and reeled in the antenna, bringing Chuck back in through
the front turret.
It was only later, when the damage report came back out of Germany that we
found out what had happened. When the blown tyre landed it was upright on
the Frieden river reservoir, and this together with its forward speed caused
it to bounce and roll along the full length of the reservoir on top of the
water, knocking out a dam control tower and its ack ack crew at the end. The
tyre ended up in the Frieden river some 100 ft below.
When he heard this Barnes Wallis immediately saw the possibility of using a
bomb like this on German dams and set to work to perfect it. The famous
Dambuster's raid was the result. He was not aware of the squadron or crew
who had done the op in the first place, which had given him the idea, so 635
Squadron and us were never given credit.
Actually, as this was a RAF station, because we didn't bring the spare tyre
back after signing out, we were accused of loosing it and stores got its
cost added to our bar bill. This left us so impoverished we had to survive
on NAAFI beer for a month.
You can be decisive, derisive, and dismissive or any other "did" but the
author doesn't want to know.

. For the Vickers Viscount affectionados -
During the late 1970s, Alidair at East Midlands Airport acquired a large number of ex-Canadian Viscounts and refurbished them either for their own use or for resale.
Viscount 757 had originally been CF-TIF with Trans-Canada Air Lines (c/n 386) but, by
October 1978 had become 9Q-CPY being delivered to Zaire Aero Service, Kinshasa.
It lasted barely 3 years there, and was withdrawn from use at Ndola (the domestic airport at
Kinshasa) in 1981.
The last 700-series Viscount in service in the UK. G-BDRC (c/n 52) was a Viscount 724 built in 1955 as CF-TGO for Trans-Canada Air Lines. It then became F-BMCG with Air Inter from 1964 to 1975, G-BDRC with Alidair ( wearing the titles of their subsidiary Guernsey Airlines, with whom it was named "Sarnia II" ), and was sold to Janus Airways in 1984. In 1986 it was withdrawn from use and dumped at the Manston (Kent) Fire School, finally being cleared for scrap in August 1993.

. Smilie.
Two members of the Lothian and Borders traffic police were out on the Berwickshire
moors with a radar gun recently, happily engaged in apprehending speeding motorists,
when their equipment suddenly locked up completely with an unexpected reading of well
over 300mph. The mystery was explained seconds after as a low flying Harrier hurtled
over their heads. The 'boys in blue' were upset at the damage to their radar gun and put in
a complaint to the RAF, but were somewhat chastened when the RAF pointed out that
the damage may well have been more severe. The Harrier's target acquisition computer
had locked on to the 'enemy' radar and triggered an automatic retaliatory air-to-surface
missle attack. Luckily, the Harrier was operating unarmed.
