Air Canada's flight AC001/11Oct made an emergency landing at Sapporo in
northern Japan enroute from Toronto to Tokyo recently. The A340-300 (C-FTNP or
FIN982) experienced some engine trouble as it approached the northern island and
landed at 1349 local time. "The pilot, after seeing the exhaust temperature rise in
one of its engines, decided to make the landing" an official said. He shut down the
bad engine and landed on three.
All 217 passengers were transferred to a domestic flight and flown to Tokyo.

. From your co-pilot, Terry.
During our recent driving tour around BC with a couple from the UK, we managed
to obtain accommodations at various motels for a cost varying from ca$40.00 to
$65.00 a room. Some of the techniques employed to reduce the first 'offering' by the
motel when we enquire the cost of a room with two beds, is to ask for a senior
discount - the owner usually smiles and tells us it is already reduced! When this
fails, we specify that we really want two rooms, as our wives are still in the car. Yes
we have two rooms adjacent and non smokers. So we try to negotiate a reduction
because we want two rooms - sometimes that works. Alternatively, we ask for a
room with two bedrooms, this works to give a reduction over two separate rooms
and, finally, we try for a cash discount or no tax over using a credit card,
and that worked too! (Several times)
Cost of gas ranged from 68.9c to 79.9c a litre, and we travelled 3,277 kilometers.
Cost for the Columbia Icefield adventure was ca$25.95 each.
At Lake Louise, we took the summer sightseeing gondola. This is a good deal if
taken prior to 10:00 as they throw in an all you can eat breakfast for an extra ca$2.00,
or all you can eat lunch for an extra ca$6.00. Neither meal appears on their adverts.
My ticket for the gondola ride cost $15.00 for a senior or student. My senior ticket
shows 'Sen/Stud' and I don't tell anyone what the 'sen' means!
So our trip was all about good motelling, good food, excellent scenery, wonderful
sunny weather every day and, best of all, good companions.

Subject: Bill Norberg's memories of Trudeau
Unlike Bill Norberg, I have no recollections of Trudeau to share, but an
incident happened recently with Stockwell Day when he was travelling on Air
Canada. As he was approaching the back of the plane to take his seat, a
couple of people recognized him and shook his hand as he passed. When an
elderly lady called him over, he went to her to shake hands and when he
stuck his hand out, she handed him her cup and saucer.
He graciously took the cup from her and carried it up to the galley.
Apparently, her daughter who was travelling with her was mortified, but he
is such an engaging fellow, he thought he would just tell her that his job
was, unfortunately not with Air Canada, but that he was in the business of
serving the public, just the same. He is a really nice guy.

IT'S A SICK, TWISTED WORLD:
A collection of 270 airline barf-bags has been donated to the museum at
San Francisco International Airport by a private collector, the Wall Street Journal
reported last week. But before you go running off to see it, just know that we weren't
quite clear on one thing: whether the theme for the exhibit was "before" or "after."
Highlights from the collection will be displayed later this year, commensurate with
the opening of the new international terminal ... we vote to schedule the exhibit
somewhere between "Out To Lunch" (a collection of lunch boxes) and
"The Romance of Travel."
IF YOU HATED THIS FLIGHT, PLEASE COME BACK SOON:
A lawsuit filed by 168 passengers who were stranded on the tarmac in Milwaukee for
six hours on Christmas Eve 1997 has been settled by United Airlines.
Pax on the ill-fated flight said they were stuck without food or functioning restrooms
for six hours after Flight 1536 from Orange County to Chicago was diverted to Milwaukee
and finally cancelled. Each passenger will get $500 in cash and a $500 voucher good
for another flying extravaganza in the friendly skies.
No word on blackout dates for the afflicted.
Canada-Russia flights possible
Flying commercial flights over the North Pole would cut hours off the circuitous routes
planes now fly between North America and Asia and save airlines hundreds of millions
of dollars each year, according to a new study commissioned by Canada and Russia.
The study found that it would be feasible to fly nonstop between such cities as
Vancouver and Beijing or New York and Bangkok. Flight times could be cut by two
hours or more if airlines use polar routes, said the study by Nav Canada, the country's
privatized air traffic control authority, and the Federal Aviation Authority of Russia.

Employee Travel policy in effect October 22.
To coincide with RESIII migration, the Employee Travel policy will come into
effect October 22. Please review the document sent to your home so you’re
ready to travel come October 22. New trip pass tickets for personal,
parent/partner, and business travel will be available at most ticketing locations
around October 16, for use October 22.
The Employee Call Centre (ECC) will accept parent/partner travel requests under the 1999-2000 allotment until 11:00 pm CT October 16.
In accordance with their commitment to process parent/partner tickets within seven days, ECC agents will accept requests for parent/partner tickets until 11:00 pm CT, October 16. New parent/partner trip pass tickets (T423) can be used for travel October 22. Note: Air Canada partner tickets issued on 014 revenue ticket stock before October 16 will be accepted until January 31, 2001.
New trip pass tickets in effect around October 16.
Barring unforeseen delivery problems, Air Canada, Canadian Airlines, Canadian Regional Airlines, and the Regional Carriers’ ticketing locations should have the
new personal (T421), parent/partner (T423), business (T425), and crew movement
(T405) tickets on hand by October 16.
We urge you to read the appropriate instructions prior to completing the new passes.
Air Canada will purchase 12 A321 and two A319 aircraft.
Today, as part of our on going growth and fleet renewal strategy, Air Canada
confirmed the purchase of 12 160-seat A321 and two more 112-seat A319 aircraft. Aircraft delivery will take place between October 2001-December 2002, for
immediate deployment in Domestic and Transborder markets.
This acquisition will allow us to start our fleet renewal program to replace older
generation aircraft such as the DC-9 and Boeing 737. Introduction of the A321 to
our fleet builds on the many benefits derived from commonality of A320 family
aircraft types.
It’s all in the voice—Speech Recognition system up and running.
If you’re an active or retired self-ticketing Air Canada employee eligible for personal travel privileges, you now have access to an exciting new Speech Recognition system. The interactive voice-enabled system will let you register for personal travel on Air Canada and its Regional Carriers’ flights, modify existing registrations, and check
flight loads and schedules. Later this month it will include flights operated by
Canadian Airlines and Canadian Regional Airlines. A mailing with all the details—including your Personal Identification Number (PIN)—is now on its way
to your home address. Eligible employees at the Air Canada Regional Carriers,
Canadian Airlines, and Canadian Regional Airlines will have access to Speech Recognition early in 2001.

. Bill Norberg has sent us another interesting story -
Subject: Airline memories of Pierre Elliott Trudeau
The happenings of the past number of days have brought back many memories of our
departed Prime Minister. No doubt many of our employees both active and retired can call
upon incidents or occasions when his presence or influence had an impact on the destiny of
Air Canada. I know I have had a number myself and the events of the past few days have
refreshed them in my mind.
As we all know our President Mr. G.R.MacGregor retired in May 1968 after some 20 years at
the helm. The question of his replacement was of great interest to many individuals both
within and outside the airline. It was common knowledge that his preferred choice as
replacement might well have been Herb Seagrim. But, as was the case before
privatization, selection of a new President of Air Canada was in no small way a political matter.
Another event was to take place that same year. The Honorable Lester B. Pearson, the then
Prime Minister had announced his intention to step down and the race was on to select his
replacement. It was obvious that no selection of a new President for Air Canada would be
made until his successor was chosen.
The political plum was just too valuable to be dispensed lightly.
There was a vacuum and the then President of Canadian National Railways, Mr. Norman MacMillan QC, who was also a member of the Board of Directors of Air Canada, served as
Acting President.
At the same time as all this was going on Air Canada had just gone through the Thompson
Commission Hearings about the closing of the Winnipeg Maintenance base which had a
great deal of political significance at all levels of Government.
The then Minister of Transport was the Hon. Paul Hellyer who was also very interested in
becoming the next Prime Minister of Canada along with a number of other hopefuls.
We had two races going on concurrently:-
1. Who would be the next Prime Minister of Canada?
2. Who would be the next President of Air Canada?
The memories of Expo 67 in Montreal and General DeGaulle's famous statement
"Vive Le Quebec Libre!" from the City Hall building in Montreal had inflamed the bi-lingual
question.
This too was to have an implication on who would be the next President of Air Canada.
I was Director of the Winnipeg Maintenance base at the time and was heavily involved in
resolving that political problem. I was contacted by Headquarters in Montreal to arrange a
meeting for the purpose of meeting with the Minister of Transport to discuss matters
relevant to the Base issue.
I set up the meeting and a number of Air Canada top people were in attendance in addition
to myself.-
Herb Seagrim who would have liked to be President of Air Canada.
R.H.McIsaac a Board member from Winnipeg who apparently also would have liked to be
President of Air Canada.
The Minister of Transport who was actively campaigning to become the next Prime
Minister, arrived along with his deputy Minister and the meeting was to start.
Before the meeting got underway the Minister made a statement:-
"If you think Air Canada is going to get in the way of my political career, you have another
thought coming. Now lets get on with the meeting".
As history records, Paul Hellyer didn't get the nomination to head up the Liberal party and
become the next Prime Minister...Pierre Elliott Trudea did.
Neither Herb Seagrin nor R.H.McIssac became President of Air Canada.
Pierre Trudeau in order to satisfy the bilingual issue selected Yves Pratte as Chairman
of the Board and the Deputy Minister, who was in the meeting along with Paul Hellyer,
became President of Air Canada...Mr. John Baldwin.
We all know the chain of events that followed that important selection.
My wife and I were on a flight from Kingston Jamaica to Montreal . The flight was loaded
but for some reason it was not departing on schedule. After about 10 minutes or so a
helicopter landed just a short distance away from the aircraft. A tanned Pierre Trudeau
jumped out of the helicopter and bounded up the stairs into the aircraft.
It departed immediately.
He quietly set about reading some papers and kept very much to himself. A group of
people were in the First Class cabin who had apparently won a flight in some contest.
Once they realized Mr. Trudeau was on board they set about trying to speak to him and
eventually wanted him to pose for a group picture with the family. They weren't very subtle
about it but Mr. Trudeau was most gracious and consented to their request. It was a typical
example of his ability to deal with people in a most understanding way.
We were very impressed with his funeral service today and in particular the eulogy by his
son Justin. One of the finest we have ever heard.
Maybe some others have memories of Pierre Trudeau they might wish to share.
Take care and be well.
Sincerely Bill Norberg <

For any photographers or plane spotters who may have seen a strange looking 767-300 arrive at YYZ on Sunday afternoon.....the mystery is solved. It was a 767-300 leased to Balair of Switzerland which had previously worked for Air Europe in Italy, hence the
Balair tail scheme with the Air Europe cheatline. It was HB-IHT and was brought into
the Air Canada paint hangar where it will be rolled out in new Air Canada colours and Canadian Airlines titles as C-GHLA (FIN656). This of course, also leads to speculation that there must be a FIN655 about to arrive as well, but so far no sightings.

FLYING BROTHERS ...
My younger brother and I, Canadians of Japanese descent, were assigned to
the same unit as navigators on 437 Transport Squadron at the Trenton, Ont.,
airbase. As soon as my flight landed in Lahr, Germany, after one routine
flight, I reported to the weather office to debrief the duty meteorologist
on the transatlantic weather my crew had encountered. As it happened, an
hour later the next home-bound crew, including my brother, reported to the
weather office for their preflight briefing. The meteorologist hadn't spoken
for long before he peered quizzically at my brother in his flight suit,
handed him the pointer and said, "Here, you know the weather much better

The Vancouver Island Pionairs Fall luncheon was attended by 44 people who sat
down to a smoked Salmon luncheon.
Out-of-towners included -
Terry Baker and Sheila Snow from Nanaimo.
Karl and Joy Schultz and John McManus from Vancouver.
Bill and Rita Quinn who moved from Kelowna.
Nona Deyman from Seattle.
Wynne Evans from Parry Sound, ON.
Chaired by John Jeffries, Director of the Vancouver Island Pionairs.
Guest speaker was Nicole Williamson, Sales and Marketing Coordinator for
Interlining Plus (formerly Canadian Interline Travel).
Nicole came armed with pamphlets of some interline tours and cruises, and
talked about some of the various services available from Interlining Plus.
The chairman introduced the subject of attendance at the various functions, and
some discussion took place regarding some ideas for increasing attendance. The
Vancouver Island has approximately 450 retirees, of which only 300 are Pionair
members. The telephone committee each spoke on their findings, and the various
reasons given for not attending the various functions. As the Vancouver Island
has the most senior retirees, many do not want to either drive the distance or have
a health problem.
The final guest speaker was Jo Kennedy, President of the C.A.I.R.E. chapter 2
which covers Canadian Airlines retirees for Vancoiuver and the Islands. During
her speak, Jo explained briefly, the make up of the District, and how the various
Presidents form their national board.
From the 268 retirees in the district, some 168 belong to C.A.I.R.E
Luncheon meetings are held bi-monthly, at different locations, on the fourth Thursday
of each month, with an average attendance in the 90's.
The various locations have been Travelodge in Victoria, Silver Bridge Restaurant in
Duncan, Coast Western in Courtenay and the next one will be in Nanaimo at the
Cottonwood Golf Club at Nanaimo Airport.

Virgin Airlines has claimed another world first by allowing passengers to receive

If the call comes while a passenger is watching an inflight movie, it will ring through

An on-line check-in service was launched by British Airways during the summer. The

If successful, the trial will extend to its top 200 corporate customers next March 2001.
BA claims it is the first airline to offer such a service for international passengers.

Some local flying club students were visiting the tower for the first time and being
shown all the equipment, radar screens, radios, etc., by the two controllers on duty.
One of the students asked, "Have you ever had a real live emergency?"
The controllers thought for a minute and then one replied, "Well yeah, we did run out

He smiled and nodded knowingly, "That's why we ask."

Subject: A/C TV Commercials
I have sent the following letter to the Advertising Dept. of the Company.
I wonder if more people should express their appreciation of the Company's high
quality commercials as well.
----------------------
Over the years, I have found that Air Canada's publicity was as times
rather mediocre not to say blah. Recently, I have to raise my hat and
salute the great improvement made in this area.
The Company's lighthearted and funny publicity seen when you watch the
Grand Prix on TV as well as the equally entertaining commercials shown
during the Olympics 2000 in Sydney have attracted a lot of attention
from the public because of its originality, class and imagination. Their
distinctive quality have generated some very positive comments.
I particularly enjoy the clear message they deliver without the use of
either English or French.
Congratulations are in order. Please transmit this email to the
Advertising Department for they deserve a medal for their
accomplishment. As far as I am concerned, make it Gold.

. In a recent edition of the eMailNews issued by Duane Frerichs appeared
this story from Phil Pawsey <
There is a story about a young pilot who was finally ready for his first
operational flight, which involved providing air cover for the landing
forces in Normandy. This eager airman picked up his parachute and
helmet and left the flight shack well before the others. Being his first
trip, he wanted plenty of time to get settled before the rest of the
pilots and squadron commander came out.
The young pilot found his plane parked on the far side of the tarmac,
climbed in, buckled up, plugged in his cords, fiddled with the seat
adjustment lever for a bit and then sat back and waited. He watched as
his squadron mates came out and strapped them-selves into their planes.
When the squadron leader made his appearance, the young fighter pilot
flipped on his switches, placed his thumb over the starting button and
glued his eyes to his prop. He pressed the button, but nothing
happened. Again he pressed, giving it a good poke this time. Still
nothing.
Meanwhile the other spits had fired up and were already taxiing to the
take-off point. "Come on, start," he shouted, but the engine remained
silent.
The frustrated young pilot watched helplessly as each pair of Spits sped
down the runway. With growing despair he saw his entire squadron become
airborne and head toward the English Channel. Looking about, he spotted
a flight sergeant some distance away. "Chiefy," he called. The F/S
looked up, smiled and waved, then walked over to the parked Spitfire.
"What can I do for you sir?"
"The damned plane won't start chiefy."
The flight sergeant smile broadened, as if awaiting the punch line to a
joke. "I'll need a boost," our hero implored impatiently, wondering
what the idiot was finding so funny.
The flight sergeant looked right at him and then said: "There's no
engine in this aircraft, sir. It's being serviced."
The young pilot's helmeted head did a double-take. No engine? How was
that possible? Had he, in his haste, inadvertently misread the plane's
identifying letter? He would soon find out. This is H isn't it chiefy?"
"It's H all right, sir. But this is a 416 Squadron aircraft."
On his embarrassing walk back to the flight shack, the over-zealous
young pilot noticed his 421 Sqdn. Spitfire sitting all alone on the
tarmac.
Now the question, if an airline had been running this show, what
classification would the delay be?

. A recent 3 part TV program aired on Discovery channel featured an Air Canada
flight from Toronto to Frankfurt and included many interesting facts about the
background work involved in operating any flights.
Flight 876 started with shots of B767 fin 633 with Jim Guild Chief Pilot B767 as
Captain and Jim Guild First Officer.
Robert Milton told us about the outstanding qualities of the B767 and how economical
this aircraft was to operate - notwithstanding the model of a B747 on his desk!
The passenger load seems to have been either 75 or 200, although, probably, it was
75 passengers who were connecting onward at Frankfurt.
It appeared that Fin nr 631 was shown at take-off to operate the flight, arriving as
fin nr 636 - all good stuff!

. Derek & Pearl Piers sent us some information on their recent jaunt -<>
I've just returned from Nova Scotia's beautiful Cape Breton Isle..........and took a drive around the Cabot Trail. It is breathtaking....................and will be more so in a week's time when the fall foliage has reached peak and they celebrate 2-weeks of "Celtic
Colours"............... when Celtic music resounds through the mountains 24 hours a day!!!!!!! Also visited Louisbourg.........restored and operated as it was in the 18th century......MOST interesting and worth a full day visit.
A drive around the beautiful Bras D'Or Lakes will make you want to be part of this beautiful Island. (I'm saying "Island".........it is part of Nova Scotia and attached via the
Canso Causeway).
For the golfers there are a number of championship courses, including of course
Canada's No.1 course at Keltic Lodge. We need not leave Canada for scenery,
history, and recreation.

Need to know.
Employee Travel policy postponed until new RESIII migration date determined. In light of RESIII migration postponement, the Employee Travel policy won’t take effect October 1, as listed in the Employee Travel document sent to your home. As a result, nothing changes—active and retired Air Canada and Regional Carrier employees continue to use 014 personal trip passes (T421), and active and retired Canadian Airlines and Canadian Regional Airlines employees use 018 U-Write passes. Until RESIII migration is complete, travel partner/guest privileges remain unchanged—Air Canada and Regional Carrier travel partners can only travel on Air Canada or Regional Carrier flights, and Canadian Airlines and Canadian Regional Airlines’ guests can only travel on Canadian Airlines and Canadian Regional Airlines flights. A firm date for RESIII migration hasn’t been established. The date will be communicated in The Daily once it’s available.
Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) applies to revenue and contingent travel. Air Canada has recently been fined AUD $5,000 for travel partners travelling without an ETA to Australia. An ETA replaces a visa for 32 nations and is a must for revenue and contingent travellers. A quick reminder that it’s up to agents at the departure station to verify if the traveller has an ETA and if not to apply for one on line. Employees are responsible to ensure travel partners are aware of required travel documents.
Tough times ahead to reach the Employee Call Centre (ECC). ECC agents are swamped with calls from active and retired employees requesting parent and partner passes. To help reduce the load—if you’ve already sent a fax to the ECC don’t send another—agents are getting through them as quickly as they can and are presently experiencing a seven-day processing delay.

Countdown for Korean airport -
Korea's new airport, Inchon, is trying to avoid the problems which plagued the
opening of Hong Kong and other international airports such as Denver, Kuala Lumpur.
Inchon is due to open in March 2001. To ensure there is no last minute problems,
systems will be tested well in advance. This be by a full test flight involving a B747,
5,000 people and 3,500 pieces of luggage.

This is the talking robot cleaner which says "Excuse me please, I am cleaning".
It started working at Manchester, UK airport during this summer. The automated

passengers and luggage as it washes vast areas of a terminal at a steady 3 mph.

. Remember when?
The first Douglas DC6 was received by C.P.A.L. on Jan 17th 1953 and registered as
CF-CUO and commenced revenue service on the north Pacific on March 10th 1953.
This aircraft was used on the inaugural flight to Mexico and Lima from Toronto on
Oct 24th 1953. The route was extended to Buenos Aires on Jun 1st 1956 and to
Santiago on Sept 21st 1957.
Aircraft CF-CZE was used to inaugurate Montreal to Lisbon on May 30th 1057 and
Montreal to Madrid on Jun 6th 1957.
In 1953, C.P.A.L. applied to operate cargo flights Vancouver to Edmonton and bought
2 Douglas DC6A aircraft registered as CF-CUS and CUT. Trans-Canada Airlines
protested and the licence was denied. T.C.A. then bought 3 Bristol Freighters for this
service, but found it uneconomical - no doubt causing a certain amount of glee
at C.P.A.L.

Remember this Guy?
IATA: A Ticket to Ride
"During the 1960s, John Lennon wrote '…She's got a ticket to ride…but she don't
care,'" said IATA Director General Pierre Jeanniot to the European Aviation Club in
Brussels, 14 September. He continued, "This song might be the rallying cry for the
development of the future European transport system where I believe it is both
desirable and feasible to have only one ticket to ride, on a quite complex intermodal
journey, without anyone having to care about reservations, connections/transfers,
further ticketing, baggage delivery or control authorities." Jeanniot pointed out that
most of today's major European air hubs are congested and that few major hubs are
being planned.
"This situation suggests that it is perhaps time to look at the development of regional,
secondary, hubs with good railway feeders.
Are you a passenger complaining about tiresome flight delays this past summer?
Guess what: it's your fault. That was one of the messages that came out of the
Senate Commerce Committee hearing today on what has been a summer of record
air traffic congestion — above the clouds and on the ground.
Among those who were criticized for flight delays were passengers who complain
about congestion but evince a “not-in-my-backyard” attitude to airport and runway
expansion. Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John McCain, R-Ariz., noted
that, at the 28 largest metropolitan airports, there have been only three new runways
built in the last 5 years.

From Bernard Desanlis <
A husband and wife are travelling by car from Key West to Boston. After almost
24 hrs on the road, they are too tired to continue and decide to stop for a rest.
They stop at a nice hotel and take a room, but they only plan to sleep for four hours
then get back on the road. When they check out four hours later, the desk clerk
hands them over a bill for $350. The man explodes and demands to know why the
charge is so high. He tells the clerk that although it's a nice hotel, the rooms certainly
weren't worth the $350 rate. When the clerk tells him $350 is the standard rate, the
man insists on speaking to the manager. The manager listens to the man and then
explains that the hotel has an Olympic-sized swimming pool - and a huge conference
center that were available for the couple to use. He also explains they could have
taken in one of the shows for which the hotel was famous for. "The best entertainers
from New York - Hollywood and Las Vegas come here to perform," explains the
manager.
No matter what facility the manager mentions, the man replies " But we didn't use it!"
To which the manger replied, "It was there and you could have!" The manager is
unmoved and eventually the man gives up and agrees to pay. He writes out a check
and hands it over. The manager is surprised when he looks at the check. "But Sir,"
he says, "this check is only made out for $100!"
"That's right," said the man. "I charged you $250 for sleeping with my wife."
"But I didn't!" exclaims the manager.
"Well," the man replied "She was here, and you could have!"
