It's a great way to keep informed!
Apparently our requests for the above may have knocked down Air Canada's
Intranet and some of our readers reported that their requests were
rejected on Fri and Sat. So I sent out this form response:
Dear NetLetter reader:
You are not alone in being rejected<G> I'm just the messenger and I put
the address in the NetLetter exactly as I received it. Try again on
Monday, because it looks like a very good e-mail address to me. (ps
sometimes the AirCanada intranet can go down, and maybe with over 700
readers of the NetLetter all trying at the same time, to gain access, it
did) Let me know please if when you try again, you get thru. Thanks
On Tuesday I received this reply from one of our readers: Many thanks
for your reply and suggestion. I waited until this morning and sent a
new request. No automated rejection has appeared, it seems your
diagnosis was correct. Thanks again.Bill Bartlett (ps in the meantime
Alan Rust is checking into this matter closer. He has better resources
than I have.)
his message to me read: I applied for the Horizons list on around Jan
25/00 and it was not rejected, but I haven't received a confirmation
that the mail was received or any electronic communications from them. I
have been pursuing this in the last few days and I am pretty sure the
address is working now. I sent a another message last night and it
wasn't returned. I contacted the "Help Desk" today and they are looking
into it, I'll check back with them tomorrow they might have been
overwhelmed by the response. I really don't know if it applies to
retirees or not, I asked them but they haven't replied yet. (I don't see
why it wouldn't).Regards,Alan wiladvfur
Wed Feb 9 Subject: Horizons Mail I've looked into the problem regarding

Page from a Log:
I would like to shed a little more light on Doug Davidson's reminisce of
the "dance floor" fiasco (Newsletter #447). At the time (and 1972 comes
to mind as the year of the deed) I was working within the Public
Relations Department in Montreal as Manager, Television, Radio & Film
Services and one quiet (and as I recall) sunny afternoon received a
query from our PR Manager in Vancouver, Al Carlson, concerning a rumour
which was flying around that fair city relative to Air Canada's
(supposed) plan to provide a lounge for First Class passengers on the
upper deck of the 747's complete with dance floor, bar, hostesses
(flight attendant's) in lounging pajamas and a piano replete with
pianist to provide the background music. It was further rumoured that
these exclusive enclaves were to be named (you guessed it) "The Mile-
High Club". The idea of Air Canada actually providing passengers with
this service was so ludicrous to those of us in the PR department that
we passed it off as one big joke and so informed the media who, as one
can imagine, were clamouring for interviews. But, it was necessary to
inform those entrusted with the broader powers of office that this
rumour was raising its ugly head and besmirching the pristine name of
Air Canada (you can tell I worked for 35 years in PR) and also being a
graduate of CYA University (cover-your-...well you know) didn't
particularly relish the thought of being seen as the man who tried to
stop the steamroller by standing in front of it if, in fact, the rumour
held any credence at all. I drafted a quick memo to my colleagues in PR
and added a few queries of my own ("How the hell are they going to get
the piano up the circular staircase?") and thought it prudent to advise
the Marketing Department, just in case...A phone call to that "bastion
of banality" (Ok, I'll admit we were rivals for the public's attention
in those days.) and the subsequent response to my query caused me to
open my mouth so wide in shock that a ten-pin bowling ball placed in
that orifice wouldn't have touched my dental work. (You guessed it
again!) The rumour was no supposition at all - it was totally valid! The
Marketing Department had advanced so far with this little gem as to be
choosing the fabric for the lounging pajamas and (as Doug Davidson has
confirmed) pulling the aircraft in for the installation of the dance
floors and (presumably) the dismantling of several pianos. As I recall,
the previously sunny afternoon at that moment took on a very heavy
overcast as the proverbial fan, a permanent fixture in the PR Department
which rarely ceased its wild spinning, commenced to spew out another
dank offering upon the unfortunate (and in this case guiltless) heads of
those assembled. In a desperate effort to remain "spic and span" I raced
(slightly ahead of the deluge) armed with the dreadful revelation into
the office of Don McLeod, at the time Director of Public Relations and
my immediate boss. Don had developed a bit of a nervous tic over the
years and when confronted with the (seemingly daily) dispatch that "All
hell has broken loose on the 41st floor!" (the site of Air Canada's
Executive offices) would run his fingers over his scalp and through his
ample hair in practice of a form of tension relief. Upon receiving my
news he commenced his almost uncontrollable habit to such a degree that
he very nearly rendered himself bald...Needless to say, in the face of
massive (and deserved) negative response from many organizations dealing
with women's rights and some governmental bodies, the idea was (to be
polite) shelved. As a former public apologist for the airline, I just
want to go on record as stating that at no time did the Public Relations
Department receive a briefing on this plan of action from Marketing
prior to the leak of information to the Vancouver media and had we been
brought into the picture at its conception would have insured that it
would never have reached full-term. Yes, even as its sobriquet, "The
Mile High Club" was about to be placed in the hands of the advertising
media for distribution to the travelling public, I am, to this day,
incredulous that not one person in Marketing knew of its other (and
perhaps even more exclusive) meaning. And if you, the reader, don't know
its "air force" nomenclature, ask your Mother. Or better yet, ask former
members of the Marketing department who, I can assure you, today know of
the "real" sense of the term (I believe to their everlasting regret).
Perhaps, now that I have opened an old Marketing wound, I can expect to
have the old fan turned in my direction and be once again the recipient
of its fetid offerings. Terry Denny -

Well three cheers for Pacific Coastal Airlines of BC. They know where
their loyalties lie because it serves some of western Canada's logging
communities, whose practices are frequently criticized by ecological
activists. Apparently, they denied passage to a Greenpeacer last August
to a coastal logging town. The passenger reported this to the Canadian
Transportation Agency who rapped the airlines knuckles and threatened
them with severe punishment if it banned Greenpeace staff again.
"Pacific Coastal states that it provides transportation to many loggers
and logging industry personnel...and that, as a result of Greenpeace's
attitude toward the logging community, it thought that carrying members
of this group could compromise safety," the agency said in its official
ruling. However, Daryl Smith, the airline's founder, told the National
Post newspaper he regarded Greenpeace as a "quasi-terrorist
organization" and "we don't want them on our airplanes" said Smith. He
is a former logger himself.

ALASKA AIRLINES SENDS ALERT ABOUT FRAUDULENT WEBSITE It is with great
regret that Alaska Airlines alerts the public that a fraudulent website
has been created on Internet soliciting donations for the families of
the passengers and crew of AS Flight 261. The site is not sanctioned in
any way by Alaska Airlines. Further, the fraudulent site may also cause
further damage by the spreading of a computer virus to those who visit
the site. The only official site for information about Flight 261 and
benevolent fund raising efforts for the passengers and crew is
www.alaskaair.com. Alaska Airlines has mobilized its own specially
trained team of employees to support and care for the family of the
passengers and crew on Flight 261. The airline will continue to help
loved ones and families through this difficult time.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - It was one of those private pacts a daughter makes
with her dad. The one who died first would send a signal to the other
that all was well in the hereafter. Two days after her mother and father
plunged to their deaths on Alaska Airlines Flight 261, Tracy Knizek
believes she got that message. A commercial fisherman who helped scoop
debris from the crash site found the red-and-gold Mason's ring worn by
her father, Bob Williams. Until she was told of the ring's recovery, the
Suquamish, Wash., woman had struggled to accept her parents' deaths. It
was only a year ago, after her grandfather died, that she reminded her
father of an agreement they made years earlier. "Ever since I was a
little girl, my dad and I had a deal. Whoever died first, the other one
would come back and tell them what it's like," she said.

COMMENTS from our readers.
Subject: Dance floor
Hi guys and gals:
So, Coleman Andrews of SAA thinks he has a world first by installing a
dance floor on his aircraft?
Ain't nuthin' new under the sun. Air Canada had dance floors thirty
years ago. When the first three 747s were new, the upstairs was used as
a cocktail lounge for first class passengers. We installed a dance
floor, well, sort of. For safety reasons, it ended up being a slab of
marble. Very heavy but not very big. I remember the guys in Maintenance
joking at the time that if the aircraft came to a sudden stop it would
shoot forward and slice the captain in two.
First class passengers back then were mainly grey-beards travelling on
business. Who, exactly, were they supposed to be dancing with? Don't
answer that! It wasn't long before the dance floors were ripped out.
Good luck, Coleman Andrews. Doug Davidson in Texas

GOOD FLIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT, AND PLEASE BE QUIET: AVweb told you last
summer that Virgin Atlantic will offer private cabins with double beds
later this year, and now other airlines are, um, embracing the concept.
British Airways next month will introduce single beds in business class,
and American Airlines says that by spring 2001, it will have seats that
convert to beds in first class on all transoceanic flights. We can only
hope that pax really just want to get some shut-eye, and will spare
fellow travelers from witnessing their determination to join the mile-
high club.

U.S.A. Industry News: FAA requires improved performance from airport
security screening companies. According to Aviation Daily, companies
hired by airlines to perform security screening duties at airports will
need certification. The FAA will establish uniform performance
standards, strengthen training and testing standards for screeners, and
impose more stringent experience and training requirements for security
company managers and instructors. With these new rules, the FAA hopes to
regulate screening for detecting dangerous objects and prevent them from
being brought on board. Screening companies and airlines will be
accountable for screener performance and training.

Jake the inventor is struggling through the air terminal with two huge
and obviously heavy suitcases when a stranger walks up to him and ask
"Have you got the time?" Jake sighs, puts down the suitcases and glances
at his wrist. "Its a quarter to six" he says. Hay, that's a pretty fancy
watch" exclaims the stranger. Jake brightens a little. "Yeah, it's not
bad. I've been working on it for months - Check this out" - and he shows
him the time zone display, not just for every time zone in the world,
but for the 86 largest cities in the world. He hits a few buttons and
from somewhere on the watch a voice says "the time is eleven till six"
in a Cape Cod accent. A few more buttons and the same voice says
something in Spanish then Japanese. Jake continues "I've also put in
regional accents for each city". The display is unbelievably high
quality and the voice is simply astounding.
The stranger is struck dumb with admiration. "That's not all" says Jake.
He pushes a few more buttons and a tiny but very high-resolution map of
New York City appears on the display. " The flashing dot shows our
location by satellite positioning" explains Jake. "View recede ten",
Jake says, and the display changes to show eastern New York State. "I
want to buy this watch" Says the stranger.
"Oh, no, its not ready for sale yet; I'm still working out the bugs."
"But look at this", and he proceeds to demonstrate that the watch is
also a very creditable little FM radio receiver with a digital tuner, a
sonar device that can measure distances up to 125 meters, a pager with
thermal paper printout, and most impressive of all, the capacity for
voice recording of up to 300 standard-sized books. "though I only have
32 of my most favorites in there so far" says Jake.
"I've got to have that watch" says the stranger. "No, you don't
understand; its not ready" "I'll give you $1,000 for it". "Oh, no, I've
already spent more that than--" "I'll give you $5,000 for it!" "But its
just not-" "I'll give you $15,000 for it!" And the stranger pulls out a
checkbook. Jake stops to think. He's only put about $8,500 into
materials and development, and with $15,000 he can make another one and
have it ready for merchandising in only six months. The stranger
frantically finishes writing the check and waves it in front of him.
"Here it is, ready to hand to you right here and now. $15,000. Take it
or leave it." Jake abruptly makes his decision. "OK", he says, and peels
off the watch. They make the exchange and the stranger starts happily
away.
"Hay, wait a minute", calls Jake to the stranger, who turns around
warily. Jakes points to the two suitcases he'd been trying to wrestle
through the terminal.
"Don't forget your hard drive and batteries".

As you may have already noticed WE HAVE CHANGED OUR NAME. To just
plain
THE NETLETTER.
By dropping the 'Between Yourselves' moniker. As we think that our new
retirees signing up would not know about the reference to 'Between
Ourselves,' which was my first choice to name this NetLetter back in
1995.
How time flies, we have 445 issues under our belt and there doesn't seem
to be any end to it! Please keep the articles coming and the
smilies<G>.
My co-pilot has left the right hand seat empty for a while, so I will
carry on the best I can.
So far this month we have signed up 31 new readers, I think that is a
record month.
We are in touch with AOL and with the help of Alan Rust's expertise we
should have all our AOL users back on line soon. We think that the
problem is anti-spam software which may have been activated sometime in
November. FYI the Archives files are now current.
Linda Kwoon advises me that she is in the process of reviewing the
complete Retiree's Travel Guide and will be providing us with minor
modifications made throughout the year for the Pionairs and anyone who
have access to the Netletter. She will also include the new AC/CP
interchange of trip pass tickets on each other's carrier, which was
recently announced.
As well as the recently enhanced employee interline agreement with
Central Mountain Air, Alberta City Link and Canadian.
(Ps This information has already been received and I shall post ASAP.)
We are also today introducing changes in our E-mail address.
<NEW> Our joint e-mail address is NOW:
PLEASE change your Address Books.
(and no need now to cc either Terry or myself separately as we would
like to keep our personal e-mail addresses separate from the NetLetter)

. From the YYZ news issued by Brian Dunn -
For the history buffs, in conjunction with the Canadian Aviation
Historical Society convention in Calgary this May there will be a 70th
anniversary re-enactment of the Prairie Airmail flown by historic
Fokker
Super Universal CF-AAM that was recently restored to flying condition.

Found on the internet.
30 YEARS LATER THE ORIGINAL "JUMBO" STILL FLYING STRONG...
It's hard to believe, but the Boeing 747 has been with us for three
decades. Last week marked the 30th anniversary of the first commercial
flight of the 747 by Pan Am. More 747s have been delivered (1,238) than
any other widebody jet in history.
According to Boeing, thirty years ago B747 cockpits had nearly 1,000
lights, switches and gauges -- and an array of analog instrumentation.
There were three crewmembers to soak it in. Today the crew has been
reduced to two, reflecting a similar change in cockpit simplicity
through
the use of advanced CRTs and computerized systems.

Ross Graham sends us this story -
Subject: Moon Landing
This is a true story...
On July 20, 1969, as commander of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module,
Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon.
"That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind",
were televised to Earth and heard by millions.
But just before he re-entered the lander, he made the enigmatic remark:
Many people at NASA thought it was a casual remark concerning some
rival Soviet Cosmonaut.
However, upon checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian
or American space programs.
Over the years many people questioned Armstrong as to what the
"Good luck Mr.Gorsky" statement meant, but Armstrong always just
smiled.
On July 5, 1995, in Tampa Bay, Florida, while answering questions
following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26 year old question
to Armstrong.
Mr. Gorsky had died and so Neil Armstrong felt he could answer
the question.
In 1938 when he was a kid in a small Midwest town, he was playing
baseball his friend hit a fly ball, which landed in his neighbors
who were Mr. and Mrs. Gorsky.
As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs.
Gorsky
say to Mr Gorsky
"You'll get sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!"

With Class
People often joke about citizens in Eastern European countries
flying with animals on the planes. When I was visiting a small
country in that part of the continent I had the option to upgrade
to first class. I looked at the brochure that didn't note any
differences between coach and first class, so I asked the attendant
what the difference was. The attendant responded, "In first class
the stewards clean up after the animals. In coach, you have to."

needs. Active employees, retirees, and parents can use CTOs for
personal ticketing needs. Faxes and telephone calls won't be accepted

. From the newsletter of Brian Dunn - YYZNEWS -
Air Canada's latest A330-300 C-GFAF (FIN931) ferried YUL-YYZ on the
19th and made its first revenue flight today on AC105/AC148 to/from
Vancouver. It is tentatively planned as of this writing to operate
AC918/AC919 to Miami on the 21st.
Air Canada announced that it will proceed immediately with the
consolidation of its regional airline subsidiaries, Air Nova, Air
Ontario, and AirBC. Joseph Randell, President and CEO of Air Nova and
Interim President of Air Ontario and AirBC, has been appointed President
of the consolidated airline.
Consolidation will take several months and in the meantime each carrier
will continue to operate separately, but the new "Air Canada Regional"
will have its corporate headquarters in Toronto. Should the sale of
Canadian Regional Airlines not be successful pursuant to the
undertakings given by the Competition Bureau, CRA will be integrated
into the consolidated regional airline.
Canadian Airlines Corp have started a re-paint program for their
fleet to a "transitional" colour scheme. The first aircraft to be done
is a 767-300 (FIN640) and will be rolled out before the end of January
in a basic white fuselage with small Canada Goose logo on the forward
fuselage and CAC titles. The tail will be the standard Air Canada
tail...green with maple leaf logo on it. FIN639 will follow, and then a
mixture of 737s and A320s throughout the spring and summer. There may
be some of the aircraft painted in Air Canada paint shops if capacity
becomes an issue.
MONTREAL AIRLINER'S CLUB
The next meeting will be held on January 30th in Room 368 between 1300
and 1600hrs at the Dorval terminal building. All are welcome. For more

Swissair retired its last Boeing 747 airliner.
AUSTRALIAN FUEL WOES ESCALATE.
THOUSANDS OF AIRCRAFT GROUNDED.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) of Australia
grounded thousands of piston-powered aircraft in eastern Australia
indefinitely, until it finds a way to ensure that fuel systems are free
of the effects of contaminated avgas. Any aircraft that used fuel
from that batch is grounded until a procedure for cleansing and
rehabilitating the fuel system is devised -- and nobody can say how long
that will take. The avgas, which was also distributed in New Zealand,
has affected an estimated 5,000 planes.
Meanwhile, flight-school operators and crop sprayers watch their businesses
bleed away, and services such as air ambulances, firefighting and mail
delivery are affected.
AOPA-Australia says the crisis will cost millions of dollars and threatens
thousands of jobs.

From Brian O'Hare Retired AC YYZ...living in Arizona
Now thats service...
An Alaska Airlines 737 jet was headed for Nome with 111 passengers all
headed to the finish of the Iditarod sled dog race.
The flight was filled with sponsors, mushers families, and lots of
Alaskans onboard.. Serving the flight were 3 brand new Seattle based
Alaska Airlines flight attendants.
The weather went below minimums in Nome and the flight had to divert to
Kotzebue ...upon landing in Kotzebue the flight attendant announced on
the PA "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Kotzebue, for those passengers
headed for Nome, Alaska Airlines always gets their passengers to their
destination...right now Alaska Airlines is getting buses lined up to
take you and your bags from Kotzebue to Nome."
At this, 111 call buttons started going off with questions like -
"What's the name of the bus company from Kotzebue to Nome?"
"How long is the bus ride?"
"Will our bags go on the bus?"
The flight attendant turned 8 shades of blue when she learned
the joke was on her - no road exists between Nome and Kotzebue....
Ron Miles sends us this one -
Gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Welcome to
Flight Number 293, non-stop from New York to Los
Angeles. The weather ahead is good and therefore we
should have a smooth and uneventful flight. Now sit
back and relax - OH MY GOD!"
Silence followed and after a few minutes, the captain
came back on the intercom and said, "Ladies and
Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you
earlier but while I was talking, the flight-attendant
brought me a cup of coffee and spilled the hot coffee in my lap.
You should see the front of my pants!"
A passenger in Coach said,
"That's nothing. He should see the back of mine!"
