. Need to know.
Be prepared when travelling—make sure you have required
visas in case of denied boarding.
Active and retired employees, eligible family members including infants
and children, and travel partners travelling on a standby basis should
always have valid travel documents and visas required for every
intermediate station stop en route to final destination.
Employees are responsible for payment of immigration penalties incurred
due to lack of correct documentation or visas.
Recently, some employees were denied boarding in São Paolo, en route to
Buenos Aires. This stop caused problems—Brazil requires transit visas for
individuals who are not travelling on a confirmed basis.
For details of visa requirements, consult the country’s consulate or TIMATIC.

. Swissair to begin tying up unruly passengers
Passengers aboard Swissair flights next year shouldn't
be surprised if they see flight attendants wrestling rowdy
passengers to the floor and tying them up. The airline
widely regarded as a backbone of Switzerland's tourist
industry, said it will supply plastic ties to cabin staff next
year and authorize them to restrain any passengers endangering
flight safety. The airline is drawing up guidelines to set out
exactly when flight attendants can try to make use of the new
maneuvers. There were 502 cases involving "unruly passengers"
on Swissair last year, nearly double the number recorded in 1996.
The figure includes people persistently smoking in the toilet.
Airline PDA's
Everybody loves a vacation, but going through airports can
be a big drag. And the longer the check-in lines the bigger
the drag. But one airline is joining the palm craze in an
effort to move you along a little faster these days. Is
this a dream? An airline agent approaches you, enters your
name into their handheld, prints your boarding pass, and
sends you on your way before you wait in line? No, really
this is one American Airlines agent's job. With technology
developed by Palm, she's offering an alternate to those long
check-in lines nobody wants to get stuck in.
California man fined in air rage case
A California man
was fined $5,000 Wednesday for an air rage incident that forced
an airliner to land in Calgary during a flight from Great Britain
to the United States. Albert Roche, 44, of Santa Monica pleaded
guilty to causing a disturbance and mischief on an international
flight. Roche flew into a rage Nov. 2 when his alcohol service was
cut off by a flight attendant. The Virgin Atlantic Airbus A-340, en
route to Los Angeles from England, was diverted when Roche swore and
threatened the flight crew and passengers.
CONCORDE FIXES PROPOSED:
This week the manufacturers of the Concorde unveiled the first proposed airframe modifications that might allow the plane to regain its airworthiness certificate.
Meeting in Paris, officials from BAE Systems and EADS France outlined plans
to British and French aviation officials that focused on reinforcing the aircraft's
fuel tanks. The fix involves floating a lining made of a rubber/Kevlar
compound in the wing fuel tanks to prevent a major leak if flying debris
ruptured the wing. British Airways, frustrated with the slow pace of
returning the aircraft to flying status, has warned that the Concorde
program may become economically unviable if it stays grounded beyond
next summer.

Subject: 60th Anniversary
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
An unusual coincidence has been discovered.
Sixty years ago, on November 11, 1940, I was employed by Trans-Canada Air Lines
(TCA) at Toronto's Malton airport. The taxi suffered a flat tire on the bumpy dirt road
to Toronto's main airport so I thumbed a ride the rest of the way for an
appointment with station manager E.P. "Billy" Wells who hired me at $60.00
per month.
Billy Wells had been captain on TCA's first Vancouver-Seattle flight on
Sept. 10, 1937, with Maurice McGregor as co-pilot. Wells also had been a
reconnaissance pilot for the famous Lawrence of Arabia in the first world war.
And now for the coincidence.
On the very same date 60 years ago, I only recently learned that the first group
of wartime ferry flights arrived in Britain - seven Lockheed Hudsons, the military
version of TCA's largest aircraft at the time, the Lockheed 14.
Due to wartime secrecy it was not publiclized and I only discovered the
coincidence when researching an article. The ferry command's subsequent delivery
of nearly 10,000 aircraft by air made a decisive contribution to the Allied victory.
Let us keep history alive!

. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn.
Get your pictures soon of the huge Martin Mars flying boats at Sproat Lake on
Vancouver Island. Weyerhaeuser, the larger of the two forest companies involved
in supporting Forest Industries Flying Tankers has decided to withdraw funding
for the planes. The company was spending about $2 million per year to maintain
the two Martin Mars aircraft for less than 80 hours of flying per year.
A spokesperson said the company is interested in maintaining the water
bombers as a tourist attraction, but will use more cost-effective methods to
fight forest fires.

On approach to my home airport, I was flying slowly down the 5,000-foot

. Alan MacLeod has sent an update to the CF-TCC saga -
Just a short note to say TCC is back in the museum now and having a
rest for the winter.
When we were in Calgary with TCC we parked at gate 14 there for about
half an hour. This to drop off Ted Dodds,a TCC pilot, so as to catch his
flight back to Toronto. While there the interest in the aircraft by the
ramp personnel of all operators was phenomenal. The ramp came to a
standstill!! Also in the passenger departure lounge the passengers
became so engrossed in the aircraft they crowded around the windows for
a closer look. They were very impressed, I was told, that Air Canada
still maintains the aircraft and operates it for the DREAMS program.
Great PR.

A DOG'S LIFE NOT THAT BAD AFTER ALL:
Well, we all suspected it, but now we know. Dogs traveling on a commercial
airliner are a lot more comfy than the rest of us sitting up there in coach --
or even first class.
Guidelines mandate that a dog must be able to stretch out and turn around in
comfort, requiring containers twice the width of the dog. No such generous
regulation exists for mere humans. In fact, the minimum requirement is 26 inches
from the back of your seat to the seatback bumping into your knees -- and that's
before the jerk in front of you slams his seat into a full recline.

. Help!
Margaret Cantwell was recently in contact with a Mr.Rob Neillands in England.
The reason being that he placed a letter in the Times Colonist asking any veterans who
were in the Battle of Normandy and had interesting things to tell, to please write him.
I believe he is a writer. Rob can be contacted email
Margaret goes on to tell us that -
I contacted him because I thought he might be able to tell me if Ken's squadron,
the Queen's 600 RAF, was still functioning etc. I want to visit it when I am over there
next year. He emailed me immediately and said yes it is and he would get the details
and send them. He then put me in contact with a Mr. Tyson who is the editor of the
Squadron News letter and is sending it to me . When he verified Ken's connection
(he joined the Squadron in 1938) he again contacted me and said I been made an Associate Member of the Squadron !

AIR CANADA said recently that it is looking at acquiring more Airbus, BOEING
and Bombardier jets as part of its ongoing fleet renewal program.
In a conference call with reporters on Air Canada's third-quarter results,
Robert Milton, president and chief executive, said the airline was looking at
replacing about 100 aircraft in the "lower end" of its fleet, including its McDonnell
Douglas DC-9s, Boeing 737s, Fokker F-28s and British Aerospace BAe 146s.
LOUISE THADEN'S TRAVEL AIR FINDS A HOME:
It is the best museum you've never heard of, and now it is the new home of a
rare piece of aviation history, the 1929 Travel Air built for racer Louise Thaden for
that year's All Women's Transcontinental Air Race. To see it, set your GPS
for the Will Rogers World Airport (OKC) in Oklahoma City, Okla., home to the 99s
Museum of Women Pilots. The museum is a treasure trove of items, many of them
belonging to Amelia Earhart, the 99s' founder.
Iraq Says National Airline to Fly Again
Iraqi Airways, whose aircraft have been grounded since the 1991 Gulf War, plans
to resume domestic flights Sunday. Flights would resume on November 5 between
Baghdad and the cities of Basra, 375 miles to the south, and Mosul, 270 miles to
the north. Repairs at Basra and Mosul airports had been completed and the flights
would use planes already in Iraq.
Star Alliance partners Singapore Airlines Ltd and AIR CANADA said they had
sealed an agreement on code-sharing, a practice which allows passengers to
connect seamlessly from one carrier to another.
The agreement took effect from October 29. The services are to be routed daily
via London Heathrow and three times weekly via Copenhagen.

. Smilie.
NICE ESCARGOTS STOP CARGO (AND PAX):
This must have been a NOTAM that no pilot had ever seen --
"Runway closed on account of slime."
It seems that last Thursday heavy rains drove zillions of snails out of the waterlogged
ground onto the main runway in Nice, France, forcing its closure while maintenance
crews scooped up the unhappy little mollusks. By the time it was all over, the runway
was closed for five hours and over 6 cubic yards of the critters had been hauled away.
No word on whether the snails were of culinary quality.

. Bill Sansom has sent us his bio -
Here is a bio of my AC experience.
Started working at AC in July 62 as a Learner Mechanic in the accessory shop.
Moved out to the DC-8 maintenance overhaul check in the fall of 62. I then transferred
to Dorval LIne Maintenance on a DC-8/DC-9 crew. In February 1966 I transferred to
Flight Dispatch in UL. In Nov 66 transferred to VR as an Assistant Flight Dispatcher.
In February 1969, I was promoted to a Flight Dispatcher and transferred back to UL
where I remained until 1978 when the Corporation consolidated all of Flight Dispatch
in Toronto.
In 1983 I was promoted to Shift Manager, Flight Dispatch. In 1986, I accepted a
position of Manager, Flying Operations in Flight Operations Headquarters UL and
remained there until 1991 when I was transferred back to YZ as a Shift Manager
in Flight Dispatch due to the "right sizing" of Flight Operations.
In 1993, I accepted a position in Flight Safety As Manager, Flight Safety and on
Sept 01, 2000, I retired after 38 yrears, 1 month and 27 days with TCA/Air Canada.
As a side note, my father, William P. Sansom retired in Oct 74 with 34 years and 3
months service and my sister, Maxine Sansom retired on Oct 01, 2000, with 34 years,
3months.
Oct 01, 2000 was the first time in 60 years that a Sansom was not on the active
payroll of TCA/Air Canada and we accumulated over 106 tears of service.

. Help!
Subject: history question
Dear TCA persons:
In 1943/4 (I was 7) I made a trip with my mother and aunt via TCA from
Moncton NB to Charlottetown PEI in a very small plane (7 passengers) that
also carried the bags of mail.
I'm now designated "memoir writer" for the family and I'd like to write up a bit
about that trip. But I want to make it more useful by getting correct terminology
and facts.
What kind of plane would it have been?
How high would we have flown? (We could see women hanging out their wash
as we passed over)
Our memories say that we paid about $11 (maybe $7 for me).
Is there a resource for such information?
Thanks Eva Haddix

A PIG IN A POKE ON A NONSTOP TO SEA:
Finally, the no-kidding winner of 'when pigs fly' award. All was normal on
USAirways Flight 107 from Philadelphia to Seattle recently until a 300-pound pig
was brought on board and given the first row of first class. During taxi at SEA, the
porker ran squealing through the cabin and then jammed itself into the galley, where
it refused to budge until given food (bacon bits?) The owners managed to drag the
porcine pax onto the jetway where it left a calling card for the other deplaning
passengers, one of whom got a shoeful.
A USAirways spokesman admits that the airline is humiliated about the whole thing
and promises that pigs will never fly again.

Air Canada Launched Daily Nonstop Service between JFK And Vancouver
on Monday, October 30.
With the introduction of this new service, Air Canada adds JFK
to the roster of New York area airports it serves (the airline also serves
LaGuardia and Newark). Air Canada offers the JFK-Vancouver service aboard
new, state-of-the-art 112-seat Airbus A319 aircraft.
October 28 marked our last Toronto-Austin, TX flight.
After almost five months of operation, disappointing peak summer period
performance, and low advance bookings, Air Canada has cancelled the route.
As a result, aircraft will be redeployed on more profitable routes.
Customers can still enjoy codeshare service with Star Alliance member United Airlines
Self-service Express Check-in kiosks—
you can use your Employee ID/travel card or credit card to check in.
A new application was recently added to the award winning self-service
Express Check-in kiosks that allows active and retired employees to check in
using a credit card. When using a credit card rather than your employee
ID/travel card, you’ll see a prompt to confirm your identification.
Using a credit card is a good alternative if your employee ID/travel card is

Great teamwork turns an emergency landing in Sapporo into an
international success story. During early October, an A340 aircraft—en route
from Toronto to Tokyo—experienced engine problems and made an emergency
landing in Sapporo. What followed was a six-day, international team effort to
replace the engine. It involved: locating a freighter to transport the engine from Vancouver; clearing the Russian-leased crew and aircraft through Customs to
land in Japan; dealing with restricted landing access and working restrictions
at Sapporo Airport—during evening and overnight hours it’s a military base—;
and flying in a crew from Vancouver Line Maintenance.
Kudos to everyone involved in this extraordinary effort.

. Terry's travel tips.
Michelle Daines sends us this tip -
My daughter and I took the Miami City Bus from Miami Airport to the Miami Beaches
area. It is air conditioned and safe as there are plenty of airport employees and security
guards who get on and off. It was under $ 2.00 U.S. each versus the $ 30.00 to $ 50.00
U.S. charge for taxi, shuttle or limo.
We got a great view of all the different sectors of Miami, some of them poorer than
others. It was a true lesson on local life and we took the bus back as well.
It was just a little hot waiting for the bus because the schedule was not as frequent
as we would have liked, but hey, well worth the small delay.
It took 45 minutes because it stops at local bus stops but not at each stop.
So try it!
