. The editors of the NetLetter are pleased to send you the
following message -
An open letter to all Air Canada Pionairs
As you are all aware, Air Canada has now countered the hostile Onex
offer to buy Air Canada and merge it with Canadian Airlines International.
It is a complex offer with much debate to follow in the financial community.
For the Pionairs, the one key element of Robert Milton's speech was his
statement to .....retain.... the present Air Canada Board of Directors.
I have spoken strongly on the importance of this matter while visiting
Pionair groups across Canada and in the United States.
As I stated... improved Pionair pension, health care and travel benefits
relied on a 'Pionair friendly' board of directors.
These improvements would be at risk under an Onex Board which
Gerry Schwartz has said, on a number of occasions, will replace the
present Air Canada Board of Directors if his takeover attempt is successful.
Today's Air Canada offer , in my opinion will be well received by the
shareholders, but more importantly, for the Pionairs, it's a great counter
attack in a winning strategy.
The battle isn't won, but the total picture has brightened considerably.
Stay tuned.........
Saville Hambleton, President, Air Canada Pionairs

. Need to know.
We recently received the following query re Buddy Passes -
A Vancouver Island Pionair couple is taking a cruise together with their
friends.
The cruise is from Athens and return, they plan to fly to Frankfurt,
then LH from there, and will provide their friends with a buddy pass.
They will return the same route.
The buddy pass only lasts 60 days, their cruise is an around the world
affair taking 6 months or so.
The problem - how can the Pionair get a buddy pass from his 2000 allotment
to cover the return. He understands that buddy passes can be requested
from February onwards(?), but he will be in Australia by then.
What are his options to obtain the pass? Perhaps being made available at
FRA, or can they be mailed c/o the cruise line?
To which Linda Kwoon - Industry Travel YUL responds -
I have been able to get a response from the Winnipeg ECC on the
best solution for our retiree to travel with his buddy on the round
the world tour.
First, all partner tickets issued from 1999 allotment expire on
January 31, 2000. Therefore, our retiree must purchase a new
ticket for his partner for the return. Since they will be on the
cruiseship, ECC has informed that they will accept a telephone call
or even a fax from our retiree to request a partner ticket as of
February 1, 2000. ECC will mail the ticket to the forwarding
address c/o the cruiseline.

. During a recent trip through Washington State, your co-pilot had
occasion to stop at the Wenatchee Airport. It was here, in October
1931, that Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon flew a single-engined
Bellanca monoplane from Sabishiro Beach, Japan to Wenatchee, Washington
- the first nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean. Pangborn and
Herndon were on the last leg of an around-the-world flight challenging
the 8 day record set in June by Wiley Post and Harold Gatty in
the famous Winnie Mae. The 41 hour 13 minute, 4,500-mile flight wrote
the names of Pangborn and Hendron forever into the annals of aviation
history. A suitable plinth, and pictorial display is in the airport
terminal.
In an unrelated trip - Lauda Air B767-300ER flew around the world
piloted by the airline's president, Nicki Launda (former world champion
formula one driver). The flight of 21,460 nautical miles took 47 hours
in the air. On board were a group of 100 passengers, who had won their
trip in a newspaper contest and a crew of 14.

. News from the districts.
The Vancouver Island fall luncheon was held on Wednesday Oct 6th at
McMorrans in Victoria. Pionairs, spouses and friends total 66, with
out of town members from Delta, Vancouver, Surrey, Nanaimo and
Ladysmith.
MC'd by District Director John Jeffrey who introduced John Innes who
invites all Pionairs to the 5th Pionairs Annual Golf Tourney which
will be held at Glen Meadows Golf Glub on June 13/14th next year.
Applications are being sent to all Pionairs across the system. The cost
for 2 rounds of golf and the steak dinner is ca$120.00 per person,
For non golfers, caddies and support groups the steak dinner will be
ca$25.00 per person.
Saville Hambleton the National President of Pionairs was next introduced
and told us that he and his wife had spent the last 10 days visiting
and speaking to Pionair groups in 3 cities over 4 1/2 time zones. The
Pionairs are in good finacial state, taking over a modest surplus from
the preceding directorate. The total Pionairs now numbers 6,324.
With Newfoundland organized the number of districts is now 16.
With regard to the take-over bid by Onex, Saville mentioned that the
pension will remain untouched as it is a separate entity to Air Canada,
is fully funded and by law inviolate. The fund is ca$4.1 billion.
Saville urged any and all Pionairs who write to their respective MLA's
do so on a personal basis and not as an Air Canada Pionair.
In closing, all Pionairs across the system were all invited to
Party2000 the annual A.G.M. in Vancouver Apr 28/29 & 30th next year.

Deja vu - hasn't something like this happened before?
METRIC-ENGLISH CONFUSION DOOMS NASA SPACECRAFT:
Okay, we'll be the first to admit that we sometimes confuse our meters
and yards, but for NASA, a metric mix-up apparently caused last week's
loss of the $125 million Mars Climate Orbiter spacecraft. Orbiter
manufacturer Lockheed Martin Astronautics used pounds for thrust, while
NASA's JPL was thinking in newtons, the metric unit for thrust.
NASA has convened three panels to investigate the failure mode, we suspect,
inch by inch -- or is that centimeter by centimeter?
AMERICAN AIRLINES LOSES SUIT OVER TURBULENCE ENCOUNTER:
As if airlines didn't have enough problems dealing with flight delays
and complaints of poor service, now they have to worry about how badly they
scare their passengers. Setting new lows for both unreasonable lawsuits
and unconscionable jury awards, 13 American Airlines passengers who suffered
approximately 30 seconds' worth of severe turbulence during a 1995
flight were awarded $2.22 million last week. With the exception of one,
none of the plaintiffs suffered lasting physical injuries.
YOU RECYCLED WHAT? It will take a lot of recycled soda cans to pay back
this mistake. An employee smashing crates so the wood could be recycled
accidentally destroyed three new 737 rudders at Boeing's factory in
Renton, Wash. Boeing officials were not sure how the unmarked crates
were put on carts identifying them as ready for disposal. The rudders
cost an estimated $500,000.

. Need to know.
The following query was sent to us by Zek Zabolotniuk to which
Industry Travel has responded -
Some of us have not aged as gracefully as we wished and have become
somewhat infirm. Our joints creak and visits to the bathroom are more
frequent. As retirees we understand the protocol of space available
travel but are unsure how we can make our needs known to the customer
service agent handling the boarding should space become available.
Employee's or retirees with mobility problems due to paralysis almost
always need an aisle seat to allow easy access not only to the seat but
to the washrooms. This also minimizes the disturbance to revenue
passengers seated in front. I have not experienced any problems however,
this request is made after the boarding pass is handed to me and most
often it has to be reprinted. Is there any way I can make this situation
known in advance without creating the impression I am making a demand?
Thanks B.M. Zabolotniuk.
Response -
It is a valid situation indeed and sure is becoming more frequent
with the aging population.
Vicki and I discussed this matter at length and here are our
comments:
While the policy for non-revenue travel does not permit advance
seat selection, there is no harm in informing the agent at the time
of checking-in on the reason for requesting a particular seat.
However, we must bear in mind that our revenue passengers are also
in the same boat and there are only so many seats near the
washroom. However, we do not see why the agent cannot accommodate
as long as space is available.

. Trip!
Your Co-pilot has returned from his vacation - what an event that was. We
picked up our friends from the UK at Vancouver Airport.
Our friends were going to share the costs with us, so we used our van. we
planned to do the North Cascade circuit in Washington State.
At the border, our UK friends had to fill in forms and pay us$6.00 each
as an entry fee.
Route 20 is the road through the mountains. On our first day, we had a
very close encounter with a deer. Just as we got onto the road after
visiting a
lookout. Fortunately we were only travelling about 45 mph, neither of us
saw the animal until we heard the bump and saw two black eyes surrounded
by antlers staring at us as it bounced off the van. The animal scuttled
off into the bush after picking itself up off the roadway.
Fortunately, no one in the van was hurt or even shookup - it happened so
quickly, and we were able to control the van and drive to the shoulder
before all the fluid ran out of the radiator.
The time was 18:00, so plenty of daylight left. I was able to stop
a passing car, and the couple kindly drove me 25 miles to Winthrop the
nearest town. I left the other three of my party at the 4,500 foot mark
with the van which had suffered a smashed front end and in no condition to
drive.
3 hours later, my van, wife and friends were collected. I made arrangements
to have the van towed back to Vancouver for repair, and we rented a car
locally which only had 100 free miles, so we drove back to Seattle for a
rental car from a major company. We got the usual airline deal, and were
able to drop it off at Vancouver Airport. One word of warning here,
Canadians are not allowed to rent a car in the US and have it dropped off
in Canada, so the rental agreement had to be completed by my UK friends.
So we lost two days spent on the phone making arrangements, but then
continued our trip. We visited the Coulee Dam in the evening and watched
the laser show using the spill way for the screen. We saw some spectacular
scenery in the mountains, going from scrubland with tumbleweed, fields and
orchards and majestic towering mountains - just incredible.
We paid a visit to the Boeing plant and saw B747's being assembled, which
was very impressive. The a visit to the Science Centre in Seattle and the
Omni theatre which our friends had never seen.
We just breezed through the customs point with no trouble, although we were
expecting our UK friends to have to pay the US departure tax but, while
being interrogated by the officail, someone shouted loudly, which distracted
him, and he just waved us through while he was trying to see what the fuss
was.
Our friends were part of the group of UK retirees visiting for a couple of
days, and we met up with the group when we got back to Vancouver - and
that will be another report. The cost of repairing my van was ca$7800, then
there was the cost of towing as well - quite expensive for my insurance
company!
(BTW - I have asked Dawn, my wife, not to call me dear for a while!)

. Bottoms up!
The lengths to which airlines go to make sure passengers are sitting
comfortably rarely make the headlines. In the interests of research
British Airways made a plea to staff recently for the use of their ...
bottoms. It was not a piece of cheek, not a request for silly asses.
The airline simply needed volunteers to check out the best foam to be
incorporated in a new business class seat.
(and also to make sure the staff were comfortable when they were
upgraded! - eds)

. Found on the internet.
Airtours of the UK, is the first airline to offer a new concept in
passenger convenience ... underfloor toilets. The loos are housed below
the main deck on a new Airbus A330-200 jet. They allow the airline to make
more use of revenue generating cabin space without reducing cabin seat
size or pitch. The lower deck toilets are also much roomier than those
normal and offer travellers a more comfortable environment by eliminating
toilet queues in the main cabin aisles.
On Airbus A340's, Airbus offers operators a sleeping section in the
forward lower deck area which can accommodate up to 10 passengers.
YOU SNOOZE, YOU LOSE: Or so it appeared when a British pax overslept as
his EgyptAir flight landed during a stopover in Manila, Philippines.
The passenger planned to deplane in Manila, but found himself in Tokyo,
where EgyptAir refused to help him get back to Britain. The passed-out
pax had the last laugh: A British court awarded him 1,150 pounds for his
troubles.
KLM TO LAUNCH LOW FARE CARRIER
Dutch carrier KLM is to join the low-fare industry with the launch of
its own carrier called Buzz. Buzz will be based at London's
Stansted airport and will take over five routes currently operated by
KLM UK to Berlin, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Milan and Paris and add
two new routes to Vienna (Austria) and Lyons (France).
Buzz will operate initially with eight 110-seat British Aerospace 146
regional jets pulled from the KLM UK fleet.
British low-fare carrier EasyJet has proclaimed itself Europe's first
Internet airline after ticket sales on its web site reached 40% of all
tickets issued. Mocking a long-used British Airways motto,
EasyJet owner Stelios Haji-Ioannou told a Geneva conference
"forget the world's favourite airline, take the web's favourite airline."
To encourage online bookings, EasyJet is offering a small discount
on all tickets sold through the web site, the only carrier to do so.
British low-cost carrier Debonair has cancelled all its flights while
receivers for the company try to find a solution to resume
operations.
Norwegian low-fare carrier Color Air was shut down by its owner
after he failed to find additional funds to finance the flagging carrier.

. This should be a good one for all those retirees .. Janet Grunwald
After a spring break, a teacher asked her young pupils how they spent the
holidays. One child wrote the following:
"We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa. they used
to live here in a big brick house, but Grandpa got retarded and they moved
to Arizona.
Now they live in a place with a lot of other retarded people. They live in
a tin box and have rocks painted green to look like grass. They ride around
on big tricycles and wear name tags because they don't know who they are
anymore.
They go to a building called a wrecked center, but they must have got it
fixed, because it is all right now. They play games and do exercises there,
but they don't do them very well. There is a swimming pool too, but they
all jump up and down in it with their hats on. I guess they don't know how
to swim. At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old man
sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape.
Sometimes they sneak out. Then they go cruising in their golf carts.
My Grandma used to bake cookies and stuff, but I guess she forgot how.
Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And they eat the same thing every
night - Early Birds. Some of the people can't get past the man in the doll
house to go out. So the ones who do get out bring food back to the wrecked
center and call it pot luck. My Grandma says Grandpa worked all his life
to earn his retardment and says I should work hard so I can be retarded
some day too.
When I earn my retardment I want to be the man in the doll house. Then I
will let people out so they can visit their grandchildren."

Name change?
With the new double beds and the launch of a mile high club on Virgin
Airlines, will this now mean the airline might change its name to
Non-Virgin Airlines?
I'm a flight instructor, and was teaching a brand new student how to
taxi the airplane. On initial call-up, I said, "Ground, Nxxx with ATIS,
ready to taxi to active, will be doing taxi practice."
The controller suggested we taxi all the way down to the inactive area,
but that was more than we wanted, so I said, "No thanks, we're ready to
taxi to the active ... I just wanted to warn you that we may be slow and
crooked."
ATC's comeback: "Well, why don't you just let the student taxi?"

. Margaret Cantwell sends another story -
I was talking to Bill McNutt recently ...he was at Victoria
Airport for many years (everyone knows Bill). He does not have a computer
so I'll be giving him copies of "Between Yourselves" as I do for
Allan (Hoppy) Hopkins who was also at Vic. Airport for many years and I
am sure everyone knows "Hoppy".
Bill passed me this this little item to send on to you -
"In the early 60's it was impossible to get RN's (stewardesses) on the
Vancouver - Victoria run. There was a great shortage at that time
of RN's. The Co-pilot had to do a check in the cabin of the seat belts.
Also Bill tells me that one day Ken Cantwell (Vancouver, my late husband)
acted as "stewardess on the Vancouver Victoria run!" Ken did not tell me
about that!!
If any other Pionairs do not have a computer or access to E Mail - let
me know and I'll gladly see you get a copy. Also anything to contribute,
I'll e-mail in.

NEW BRUNSWICK DISTRICT
FALL LUNCH 1999
Timberland Motor Inn & Restaurant
Route 114 Penobsquis
Phone # 433-2480
1300 hrs Thursday October 28th
We'll be back at Timberland this fall - the same location we met at last
Spring. On the new part of the Trans Canada from Fredericton or Saint
John, take exit 418; from Moncton take exit 432 and follow the signs to
Penobsquis, Timberland is on the old highway near or beside Animal Land.
The Inn will need a head count by Monday, Oct. 25th, so please let your
contact know whether you and your spouse will be there.
Monthly Luncheons.
Now that the golf season is over, the Saint John retirees get together
once a month for lunch, usually on the last Thursday of the month and
usually at a different location each month. A phone committee advises the
Saint John group of the date and location, but all New Brunswick or
visiting retirees and spouses are welcome.
Frank Cogger (672-2159) is the organizer and he can give you details of
an upcoming lunch.
PARTY 2000
-and it will be a great party!
It's the AGM in sunny Vancouver, April 28,29 & 30.
You'll enjoy the Sheraton Wall Centre, a first class hotel in a central
location, and best of all, you'll enjoy getting together again with
old friends - and making new ones.
One of the highlights at this year's meeting was a question and answer
session with representatives from the pass bureau.
Calling all Golfers.
Earlier this summer, the Cape Breton District held a very successful
Pionairs Golf Tournament at Baddeck NS. Well over a hundred Pionairs and
Spouses enjoyed Maritime hospitality at parties and banquets, played a lot
of golf and lost a lot of golf balls. Next June 13-14 the tournament is
moving to the opposite coast and will be hosted by the Vancouver Island
Pionairs at Sidney B.C. Take it from someone who went to Baddeck last
summer - you don't need to be a low handicap golfer to have a lot of fun!
Further information, and registration forms will be available at
the luncheon.
Dreams Take Flight.
By now you will have received your payroll deduction form for charitable
donations, with Dreams Take Flight now added to the list. Earlier this
month a flight operated from Halifax with children from our district on
board. Let's support this very worthwhile cause.

. Millennium.
When the chimes of Big Ben in London England ring out the old year at
midnight on December 31st 1999 and welcome in the new millennium, where
is one of the places to celebrate? The only possible answer is London's
Dome, official partner is British Airways. As well as a huge variety of
attractions to keep visitors busy in the innovative themed 'zones', the
Dome will be an international showcase for the best of British design and
ingenuity.
With the biggest roof in the world, covering 20 acres, it could hold
18,000 double decker buses, two Wembley stadiums or 13 Royal Albert Halls.
The base area is 25 times greater than the Taj Mahal with more than a
million square feet of fabric covering. Tickets are now available from a
booking line, internet, railway and bus stations, travel agents, tour and
coach operators and the UK National lottery retailers. All tickets must be
prepurchased. The closet Underground station is North Greenwich, the
journey time from Waterloo station is 12 minutes.
In a further millinnial celebration, British Airways is building the London
Eye, the world's tallest observation wheel on the South Bank of the Thames
opposite the Houses of Parliament. It will rotate every 20 minutes to
give 960 people a breathtaking view of London and, on a clear day, up to 30
miles away.
The web site for the Dome is http://www.dome.co.uk
