. Here's a story from Bill Norberg to get the year a rollin'
Subject: Remember when anything was possible?
When I was taking my flying instruction at the YWG Flying Club in 1941,
I was to get to know a most interesting member of that Club. His name was
"Doc" George. He was a medical doctor and was one of the Department of
Transport approved doctors to carry out pilot medicals for the annual
renewal of pilots licenses. He gave me a number of medicals and they were
quite interesting as he would talk flying in preference to anything medical.
Doc George loved flying and had been involved with it one way or another
for many years. He owned his own aircraft which he kept in a small hangar
behind the Flying Club. His aircraft was as unique as was the "Doc"
himself. It was called a Barling and without doubt was one of the ugliest I
had seen up to that point in my flying experience.
It was a low wing monoplane with polyhedral wings that were absolutely
square at the ends. The wing chord was very thick giving it a very heavy
look. The landing gear shock absorbers consisted of a number of 1/2 inch
shock cord bands connecting the two struts in the centre.
It was powered with a Le Rhone rotary engine in which the crankshaft
remained stationery while the cylinders rotated to which was attached the
propeller. It was alleged this provided better engine cooling. It was a heavy
lumbering aircraft but he loved it. He was also very generous to all us
budding pilots and would allow us to fly with him regularly.
He managed to acquire a newer aircraft in Toronto called a BA Eagle and
arranged to have it ferried to Winnipeg for him. It was a low wing aircraft
with retractable landing gear and was quite a sleek looking aircraft
especially when compared to its predecessor the Barling.
I was at the Flying Club the day it was due to arrive and everyone was
quite excited for him.It had not arrived by the expected time and he was
getting a bit worried. It did not have radio so there was no way of
determining what was happening or when it would arrive.
A number of TCA pilots were members of the Club and of course all knew Doc
George. As the tension built they managed to "arrange a test/training
flight" with a Lockheed 14 and headed east to scout for the aircraft.
It was located safe and sound and it arrived in good order much to Doc's
relief. Imagine trying to do a similar thing in today's world?

I was going to send you a blurb on the Pionairs Luncheon from last Sunday
Dec 6th, but I figured someone else would.
However, I just want to let you know, that there were 188 in attendance
(up from 107 last year). It was held at the Old Mill; lovely setting. And
the best part is - there were a lot of younger new Pionairs in attendance
and this time the chair recognized the new attendees.
An excellent luncheon, and it was nice to see former fellow colleagues.
(I also won a door prize!!! a nylon jacket from a Ford dealer....and I just
bought a GM last month!!).
So, bye for now....have a great season....and thanks for the netletter.

. Don Demeza reports an unusual flying experience:
Just after dawn on Saturday, December 12th two Sandhill Cranes, wingspread
over 6 feet, circled over Keller Drive in Belleville. They spotted a paper
delivery person on Keller so surprised him by landing - right in front of our
house.
They wore bands, numbers 202 and 204 which provided an 800 number. This put
me in touch with Bill Lishman, commonly known as "Father Goose". Bill
advised that our visitors were Frank and Edna, two of seven cranes that
had followed his ultra light south a year ago. They had returned north on
their own and were now following the return path established by the ultra
light.
Bill was pleased they were still on course having been reported a day earlier
at Grafton, Ontario. Their next visits should be Bloomfield, Kingston and
then across the border to Watertown. He said they unfortunately loved people
but not to worry about cars as they had previously survived a stroll down the
main street in Peterborough.
The cranes spent the day on Keller Drive enjoying celebrity status.
The Intellegencer (local paper) will feature them on the front page Monday.
Frank took off three times, circled, calling to Edna who refused to be
enticed away from her adoring human friends. I chased her down the street
and almost took off myself but Edna was having none of it. We hope they will
soon leave but the flow of people attracts the cranes.
They love to look in car windows and spent a half hour on our front porch
looking in the window and pulling at the Christmas decorations. They also
like zippers and shoe laces - quite an education.
Departure was around 3.30 p.m. when Frank and Edna were challenged by the
smallest dog on the street - it can hardly climb the curbs.

Car Rental U.K.
I thought your readers would like to know of "European Cars Service" of
Toronto.
I have no association with this company other than being a satisfied
customer.
First rate service and prices! with Kennings. I faxed a request for
a car in Glasgow, with very short notice (two days) and got a confirmation
next day from Andre. I have no experience with their services for continental
Europe but have used them several times for the U.K.
Address and phone no. as follows.
European Cars Service, 25 Adelaide St.East, Suite 1512, Toronto ON
M5C 1Y2 tel and fax # (416)266-2413
(BTW gas price per litre around London is GBP0.69 (C$1.80) - eds)
Ken also sends this experience -
YYZ Security
Last week I was given a hard time going through security at YYZ bound for
LAX. My carry-on bag conformed to the dimensions o.k. but the person at
the x-ray machine challenged the weight. Turns out it was less than 2 kilos
over the 10 kilo limit. How she judged between 10 kilos and 11.8 kilos
surprises me. Alright I exceeded the limit, but I did so in all innocence,
and have never had this problem before. I've never bothered to weigh it
before; does anyone? They also challenged my wife going through with a
carry on bag, a hand bag, and carrying a third item, - a book. Thankfully,
although it was close to departure time, the Air Canada staff were able to
check the bag through. Traveller beware.
