. We have a bio for John Clark -
I found out about your publication through Joe Timp, a close neighbour.
As to my bio. I joined TCA in Nov.55 and after flight training flew the DC3
as an F/O, since then it has been one aircraft after another until my last
flight on the 747 June 92. Other than training courses I have been based
in Toronto throughout. I enjoyed every minute of my career with TCA/AC
and in no small measure to the people I have met in all the stations.

. Bob Carson sends us his bio -
Interesting story: How I joined TCA.
When I was 16 the Air Force had a program in which you could join the
Reserves and go to courses twice a week and get paid. In addition you would
work at an airbase in the summer and also get paid which was a big deal.
After three years and completing High School they had trained me to be a
Fighter Controller Operator (Air Traffic Controller). I applied to the
airport and went through the aptitude test, Exams and many interviews as
was the case for government jobs then.
I was accepted as an Air Traffic Controller Trainee and went to the airport
to discuss my posting. They explained to me that my first posting would be
in Cartier Mines. Most people would not know where Cartier Mines is and
neither did I. It's at the bottom of Forbisher Bay in northern Quebec.
Being 19 they assured me that there was a girl behind ever tree up there
except there are no trees. They thought this was funny but I didn't.
I said to them you got it all wrong, "I live at home with my parents, have a
girlfriend and want to work in Montreal even though the city bus did not go
all the way along Cote de Liesse". They then explained the career path. You
would work your way up through Bagotville, Three Rivers, Quebec City then
ventually Montreal.
At that point I said thanks but NO THANKS. They were rather annoyed at me
since I had taken all the governments time on test and interviews all to
eventually say no. I left their office and across the hall was the TCA
employment office. I walked and ask to fill out an application. The girl
took it and went inside and I was interviewed by another guy. I was asked
if I could go over to the Base for another interview and was given a bus
ticket to take the Provincial bus from the airport to the base. As a bonus
I was also given a ticket to get home which was great since the city bus
only went as far as Rolls Royce (I think). This was Friday and I spent that
afternoon at the base and started work the following Monday and stayed for
35 years and 1 day since 1996 was a leap year.
That was November and was only put on permanent on Feb 28, 1961. That
Christmas Bill Sadler came to the base and talked to us about the companies
results. Restraint was necessary for the next year so I went home told my
Mother I better start looking for another job this one will not last but it
did.
I think I got carried away but here it is.

. One of the recent 'cons' to join us was Doug Davidson who writes from
Kuwait. Doug is presently on a two-year contract as Deputy Finance
Director, Kuwait Airways.
Hi folks:
A quick report on the effects of the recent "Saddam" crisis on the airlines.
BA was the first to react. Mind you, they are particularly sensitive.
They were criticised for allowing a 747 to be trapped in Kuwait at the
start of the Gulf War. Crew and passengers were taken to Baghdad and the
aircraft destroyed.
Their daily 777 from LHR normally turns around with a crew layover in
Kuwait. They introduced a station stop at Bahrain on the return trip, with
a crew change there so that crews did not have to stay in Kuwait.
Arrival in LHR was three hours behind sked, fouling up all the connections.
BA offered passage out of Kuwait to any staff who felt uncomfortable
staying here. In the meantime, London banned the issuance of non-rev
tickets to and from Kuwait. The result was that those who did want to
leave could not get a ticket. The left hand knoweth not what the right
hand doeth.
Yield management challenge: flights were all oversold. When the U.N.
reached an agreement with Iraq, cancellations and no-shows exceeded the load.
Kuwait Airways (and all others) operated normally although in-bound loads
could be described as light. It's an ill wind etc.... I was at the
airport when BBC and CNN crews were leaving to look for action somewhere
else. The boxes they carried with them were unbelievable. Great excess
baggage revenue!
There was never any sense of crisis within Kuwait. Very few people left
the country. It sounds much worse on CNN. Till the next time......

. Here is a bio from John & Dolores Gallagher -
John D. Gallagher joined TCA Dec 1951 and was kicked out March 1991
[age 60 rule]. I was a pilot for those 40 years. Promoted to Captain 1957
on the DC-3 and flew most of the fleet and the last 7 years on the B-747.
I was always based at Toronto. My wife, Dolores [of some 45 years] live
just north of YYZ on a few acres. I was part of the CALPA executive from
1957 in the safety division - accident investigation and I'm still a
consultant with them. "Them" now being ALPA-Canada, ACPA and IFALPA.
I was in the office a few months ago and just for fun I put my employee
number in the computer to see what would happen. You never know - maybe
they still owe some $$.
The message said I was expired.
I knew I was retired but to be told I'm expired is wrong!

. FOUND ON THE INTERNET.
Ottawa International Airport is set for a major expansion starting
next spring. The 38 year old airport is running out of space and the
project includes a new terminal building and parking garage. The new
terminal will be built adjacent to the existing building and will be
twice the size. No decision has been made on the timing or the
possibility of an airport improvement fee.
SAY "GOOD BYE" TO A GRACEFUL LADY:
The end of an era in military aviation came last week as the U.S. Air Force
retired SAM 26000, the VC-137 that served as Air Force One during some of
the most visible, traumatic and turbulent times in U.S. history.
SAM 26000 was the plane President John F. Kennedy took to Dallas on November
22, 1963, and the one that carried him home in a casket later that day.
The USAF will restore the plane to its early-1960s configuration and put it
on public display.
A "LOT" OF VODKA?
Poland's national airline LOT was forced to cancel a flight last weekend
after two members of the crew showed up inebriated.
The chief stewardess and a mechanic had been drinking, forcing an
unscheduled RON for Saturday's charter flight 6202 out of Tenerife.
"After blood tests by medical services in Spain it emerged that the chief
stewardess and the ground mechanic were under the influence of alcohol,"
said the carrier.
TURBULENCE DETECTOR:
The beginning of the in-cabin food service has always seemed to signal the
onset of increased turbulence. Now, NASA says its tests on an experimental
laser device may allow flight crews to detect clear air turbulence, making
for a smoother cabin service.
FROM THE "WHY DOESN'T THIS EVER HAPPEN WHEN WE FLY" FILE:
Some people just can't wait to get comfortable on an airline flight.
This evidence comes via an Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle, WA
to San Francisco, and involves an unidentified woman whose comfort level
apparently involved shedding her clothing...all of it. Eventually,
security was called and she was escorted off the flight.
No word on the fate of her luggage, or if the event took place in lieu of
the movie!
As reported in McGraw-Hill's Aviation Daily recently.
It seems that at a hearing called by the Senate Judiciary antitrust
subcommittee on March 19, seven airline CEOs -- Robert Ayling of
British Airways, Gordon Bethune of Continental, Richard Branson of
Virgin Atlantic, Robert Crandall of American, Gerald Greenwald of
United, Leo Mullin of Delta, and Stephen Wolf of US Airways -- found
themselves crammed together cheek-by-jowl at the witness table.
Whereupon subcommittee chairman Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) cracked, "Sorry
about the crowding, but welcome to coach class."

Glad to be aboard.... I have had several nice Emails since my name has
been added to your list. Thank-you great fun hearing from nice people I
used to work with. As promised a short bio for you...
Maynard Bartlett born in Harvey Station, New Brunswick. Started with
Trans-Canada Air Lines in April 1959 in Toronto. Records.. Went to
Los Angeles when we opened in 1967, transferred to Dallas/ Fort Worth
in 1977 APO Manager. Retired February 1986.
I then went with TranStar Airlines in 1986 and transferred back to Los
Angeles . TransStar was part of Southwest Airlines I stayed as their City
Manager for three years until they closed the station. I am now
living in the Dallas/ Fort Worth Area and would enjoy hearing from all my
buddies. ---------- Maynard Bartlett <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. >
And one from Darryl Richmond -
I do appreciate getting copied and already have received a number of
messages from friends of the past, who upon learning of my retirement
through your Netletter, have contacted me by way of EMail.
I started to work for Air Canada in April 1961 and retired effective March
1, 1998.
During the first six months of my career I worked with Regional Operations
in Toronto, but shortly after joining Ed Zakala asked me to join
In-Flight Service. I spent the next approximately 1 year with them and then
transferred to Maintenance (now Technical Operations), working for
Charlie White, Cy Clissold, etc in various activities associated with
manpower reporting, budget, and aircraft scheduling/maintenance related
functions.
Approximately 7-8 years later I transferred back to In-Flight Service at
the request of Kerry Collins and spent the next approximately 20 years
involved with scheduling matters (Planner, Planning Supervisor, Scheduling
Manager, Route Operations Manager, and Flight Attendant Manager) while all
the while enjoying many projects involving labour relations (contract
negotiations) and organizational reviews.
Approximately 1991, I left In-Flight service to join Human Resources as the
Manager of Personnel & Employee Relations, in Toronto, the position from
which I retired.
Once again thanks for including me on your mailing list and I do look
forward to keeping in touch with AC through your Netletter.
Regards. From: "Darryl" <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. >
And now from Bob Troup
Born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Started with Air Canada in 1951, in the
Winnipeg machine shop. Moved to Montreal in 1965. After an assignment in
Maintenance Planning, setting up the tooling for the new Powerplant shop,
I spent the rest of my active career looking after the maintenance of the
equipment in that area. Took early retirement at the end of 1977,
and have had a wonderful twenty years of travel with my wife of 56 years,
Dolly. Presently living near our two daughters, in Windsor, Ontario.
Hope to see a lot of old friends, and to meet many "surfers" at the A.G.M.

. Two responses to the story by Bill Norberg in NetLetter nr 254 -
Bob Carson writes -
Good comment from Bill Norberg.
When I joined the company in 1961 the 650 was on it's way out and being
replaced by the IBM 1401 with 16K of memory plus operated in character
mode. Did you ever wonder why the coding on many of the Sindaily items were
9 for YES and 8 for NO which was from the 650 as a Numeric machine. As a
computer "Tab Operator" working shift when the winter nights were very cold
we would arrive and lean against the 650 with all it's tubes and warm
ourselves before starting work. Bob Carson <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. >
and from Tom Martin -
Bill Norberg's memories described in NL254 bring back a lot of memories for
me of getting started with computers back then. P&S didn't have an Anne B.
to help us out. Today this PC beast of mine knows very well its the boss,
but then we didn't understand that. When P&S was getting ready for the 650,
I was assigned half time to help with the planning and when we thought all
was well and the system was a go, we had some rude awakenings. We found
people thought they had to have a paper copy of every transaction and we
were flooded with paper, and they were confused. We ended up creating a
"snag clearance" group which I headed and which had Internal Auditors, YWG
Finance people & P&S on it. Once in a while Bill Sadler and or Henry Kiel
would show up to see how things were going and we ended up working the
afternoon shift so as not to interfer with the daily operations and so we
could try to fix what the day had created. When we were finished after many
months, a small permenant group was set up and as I recall our NL co-pilot
Terry Baker was transferred from the UK to be a part of it. I recognize at
least one NL subscriber who was on the C&SS side then - Irv Christiansen.
I'm not sure what the Company is doing about Y2K, but I believe they are
working hard to cope with it and hope they don't have to go through the
growing pains we did with that old IBM650.
Tom Martin <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. >
(Yes quite right Tom, I was transferred - needed a 'limey' to help sort it
all out.<g>)

. Terry found this in the book - 'Ocean Bridge'
The worlds first 'alliance' or code-sharing in the airline industry was
probably between Imperial Airways of Great Britian and Pan American of the
US.
In 1932 when the two companies found it convenient to cooperate on various
international routes. In Bermuda they combined their resourses on the
New York to Europe run.

Regards. From: "Darryl" <
Bob Troup.

Bob Carson <
and from Tom Martin -
Bill Norberg's memories described in NL254 bring back a lot of memories for
me of getting started with computers back then.
Tom Martin <
(Yes quite right Tom, I was transferred - needed a 'limey' to help sort it
all out.<g>)

. Terry found this in the book - 'Ocean Bridge'
The worlds first 'alliance' or code-sharing in the airline industry was
probably between Imperial Airways of Great Britian and Pan American of the
US.
In 1932 when the two companies found it convenient to cooperate on various
international routes. In Bermuda they combined their resourses on the
New York to Europe run.

. Terry spotted this in the book 'Ocean Bridge' -
In 1927, the Government of Canada initiated an experiment known as the
ship-to-shore airmail service to Europe. By using mail planes in
conjunction with ocean liners in the Gulf of St. Lawrence it was possible
to speed up delivery between North America and Europe by more than a day.
The RCAF flew the first flights, and then it was taken over by a private
company named Canadian Transcontinental Airlines, later absorbed by
Quebec Airways. Flying from Dorval the planes made contact with incoming
and outgoing liners at Pointe-au-Pere near Ramouski.
In 1932 the exchange of mail was made at Red Bay, a further 600 miles
east of Pointe-au-Pere thus saving 2 to 3 more days of the transit time
of mail to and from Europe.
(Knowing how long mail takes today, this method is still being used! - eds)

. Those of you interested in the early days of TCA and the CGTAS time
frame may be interested in a book suggested by Charles J.L. Mackie
The book is called "the Water Jump" and is by the author
David Beaty. The ISBN 0-06-010296-9, and Library of Congress catalogue
card number 76-5116. The publishers are Harper & Row and are American.
It is an excellent book and is all about the story of Tranatlantic
Flight, from the very first poeple to attempt the crossing until up to
the present day. Although it is an American publication TCA is mention
in several times in connection with TCA efforts in the early days of the
CGTAS , even had a photograph of the inside of the Lancaster loaded with
Mail and I well remember crawling the length of the aircraft over these
bags of mail to get to the flight compartment.
The book was mailed to me from an old time pilot who was involved in
the early days by the name of Bill Fleig. Senior Capt of Reebok Aviation
in Bedford Mass. He overheard me telling few tales of the early days
over the air and dropped in and said he would forward me the book and to
return when I am finished with it.
It is one of the better books that I have come across re the early
days on the Atlantic, and it sure brought back a lot of memories for me.

A rumor of a possible Canadian air traffic controller's strike in the offing

. News from the Districts.
Subject: Halifax Pionairs
Hi: The following from Charlie Stock:
Due to the closing of Armdale Yacht Club for the month of January,
there will be no January meeting, the next meeting will be the first
Wednesday in February, the 3rd.
Also a very successful Christmas Party was held at the Armdale Yacht,
their were about 70 in attendance, down slightly from last year.
Olie Moore attended the party, he was enroute home from Sydney, where a
new Pionairs group was formed. Mitch
Subject: Montreal District Pionairs.
131 Montreal Pionairs and guests held their Christmas dinner Dec.3rd
& elected Pam Rosholt to succeed Herb Guilfoyle as regional director
for 2 years.
Sam Gatelaro, has donated one of his painting for the last six or seven
years (I'm the one that has to pry the painting from him, he's easy)
and the lucky winner Mrs Sheila Reynard. Sheila's husband Russ has been a
long time worker for the Montreal Pionairs.
We got $501.00 from the 131 that attended our dinner, I figured it about
$3.80 per head, who said that Air Canada people are cheap.
Apart from Dreams take Flight. The Montreal District's, original adopted
charity is still, The West Island Volunteer Bureau. A part from the 501
dollars that was donated, to this add approximately 90 Christmas wrapped
gifts for seniors.
FYI I recently had a call from our new Director Pam Rosholt, asking me to
go and help sell some Dreams take Flight, clothing tee shirts, etc.,
this took place Dec 11th at the Dorval Maintenance Base cafeteria.
Take care Bill S.
Bob Carson and his wife Esther recently attended the Dorval C&SS retirees
monthly 'Bored meeting', these are his comments -
We went out to lunch today at Chenoy's (that is where they serve Smoked
Meat remember that) with the group from C&SS.
They meet every first Thursday and I do attend when in town. I'll give
you a little nostalgia there was a good turnout today - Kal Kalonowski,
Gilbert Gibson, Gord Henkle, Eric Lalonde (who is my neighbour),
Bonnie Alexander, Mavis & Lois Morrison and Monica & Bob Belding.
Andy McCready and Ed Mason usually attend but were not there today.
R. H. (Bob) Carson" <
TCA Alumni -
The Alumni was >very nice and wonderful to see old friends again. A
very small turn out this year only 43.
We know there are are a few people not well enough to travel also the
Canadian dollar is for the pitts but we sure need some support.
We hope this is not the last year.
The new president Mary Emmerson is going to send out a letter with some
suggestions and hope all the members will answer.
Thanks again Mary Ryder

. Final part of the story found by Vesta, part 1 was in NetLetter nr 335 -
Airlines Soc team make schedule work no matter what.
By PETER FITZPATRICK
Meanwhile, SOC staff through out the room are busy carrying on with
their routine tasks. Overseeing cargo is Ross Leighton, who is doing
calculations for ferrying two 6,500 kg engines to London. There
are a whole range of items, from horses to radioactive material,
that moves by plane. Recently, Air Canada shipped 27,000 kg of
Toblerone chocolate from Zurich. Across the way at another cubicle,
Erwin Wagner, in the load and balance section, is calculating
how a plane in Phoenix should be loaded. Each plane needs to be
balanced like a teeter totter, without too much weight forward or
aft, he says. Thus each piece of luggage and cargo is loaded on a
pallet that is assigned a place in the hold and the instructions are
then sent to the ground crew in Phoenix. The level of detail on the
screen is impressive, including a note that there's a "live puppy"
on board. Next, Mr. Wagner has to calculate the amount of fuel to
load in the plane's various tanks. The key is to have enough fuel,
but not too much because any surplus is extra weight that has to be
carried and reduces fuel efficiency. Another factor in the fuel
calculation is the weather and headwinds the plane can expect to
encounter en route. Over at another panel of computers, Larry
Babcock calls up North American weather patterns on his screens
and feeds the information to route planners. These same computers
can also show real time air traffic, and with a point and click of
his computer mouse, he can pinpoint and identify any plane larger
than a Cessna aloft anywhere in the world. Meanwhile, over in
operations control, SOC officials are re jigging a London departure
to give the delayed Delhi plane time to make a connection. As well,
the weather is worsening in Thunder Bay, making it increasingly
dicey to send a DC-9 into the storm. To remedy the dilemma, Drew
Tapson types a series of commands into the various keyboards
before him to replace a DC-9 designated for the route with a larger
Airbus A319. But the Montreal-Toronto jet, which is due to leave
within two hours, is still doubtful because of its technical
problems. Suddenly, Doug Platt in maintenance control hangs up the
phone and announces the plane is available. Its problem, a clogged
lavatory, has been fixed. Mr. Bredt doesn't crack a smile, but
continues to survey the room. "These are one of the few guys in the
airline who I'm happy to see sitting back with their feet up on the
desk because when they're hammering on their keyboards that means
we've got some problems," he says.
