Subject: Biography
... even though I am not retired yet (29yrs service and thinking about it)
I publish a 'YYZ NEWS' e-mail bulletin from time to time.
I just got back from a trip to Hong Kong. The purpose of the trip was
primarily to photograph airliners making the famous (or infamous) Kowloon City
approach to Kai Tak airport before it closes on July 5th.
I took video camera with me as well as some print film. Despite some
lousy weather for photography I managed to get some good shots I believe.
There is no other airport in the world that I know of where 747s and other
widebody aircraft make a 40 degree turn on to final within one mile of the
airport....and do it visually at minimum altitude and minimum speed over built
up residential urban area. It is something to behold!
All of the "fun" of landing at Hong Kong will be gone on July 6th when
the new airport opens at Chep Lap Kok. Interestingly enough, as luck
would have it Air Canada flight 837 arrives at Kai Tak aiport on the
evening of July 5th, then the aircraft will be ferried over to the new
airport the next morning for departure of flight AC836 to Vancouver.
My personal info;
... started with A.C. in the Resv. office , at 130 Bloor St. West,
Toronto, on Jan. 27 th, 1969.
In April 1973, transferred to YYZ Airport, working in the Passenger Service
world, in Terminal 1. Through the years, worked as A/Contract Carrier Mgr.,
did A/Passenger Superv. assignments. Worked in the Scheduling Department,
and in the Stoc Center, where to-day he is a Shift Co-ordinator,
assigning Gates, at Terminal Two.
... had a very keen interest in Aircraft. From the Mid 1960's
(I have) been recording Aircraft Registrations, first in the Toronto Area,
but in later years, world wide.
... instrumental in the Publishing of the North American Aviation News,
for about 11 years. This is a book which records and illustrates
Aircraft Facts, Registrations, and Stat's, including pictures.
This publication included features, on Airline and Route News, and
often articles on De-Havilliand Twin Otters, and then Dash 7s, etc.
... found personel time valuable and no longer involved with
this type of publication.
Currently, married, and living in the Town of Richmond Hill
just North of Metro Toronto.

. Another story regarding the Vanguard aircraft -
Am forwarding this which I got from my son, the lawyer, in Calgary.
Am enjoying the nostalgia trip on the Vanguard. It was a friendly old tub
and I had a soft spot for it. It was my first flight ever - BEA from
Heathrow to Edinburgh. Only BEA and AC bought it. In cruise it had a
characteristic thrum which would zing through the cabin every few seconds.
When I worked at the base, somebody more technical than I explained that
the fuselage had unfortunately acquired some of the properties of a tuning
fork. Can anybody confirm?

. In NetLetter nr 275, Ken Day sent information regarding the Vanguard story
from Bill Norberg - we inadvertantly referred to Ken as Auldis - sorry Ken
-moving right along, here is a story from Ken.
Bill' s contributions usually prompt recall of similar or related events
one of which concerns the super constellation operating on the North
Atlantic during the winter in the mid-fifties. Perhaps Bill would flesh
the story out from the technical standpoint. It concerns clear air
carburetor icing although the problem was not initially readily identifiable.
At one point, consideration was given to routing flights via Santa Maria in
the Azores.
One flight of note during this period was operated westbound by Captain
Steve Abulet. It is "reported" that Captain Abulet lived up to his nickname
particularly during this operation. The aircraft literally roller coastered
across "the Pond" with engines cutting in and out with grave doubts as to
whether the flight would clear the Greenland Icecap and the Meany Mountains
prior to Goose Bay.
The situation was such that Steve was unable to leave his seat for a very
very lengthy period. The purser, Bill Mallar was called upon to show some
imagination and initiative and he settled - several times- on the first
class green styrofoam Ice Bucket.
In the months that followed, a frequent question was whether Steve's ice
bucket was on board that day!
Ken Day email:This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
(We, the editors, took the liberty of asking Bill Norberg for his comment,
as suggested by Ken Day, and here it is) -
Re the E-mail from Ken Day. Yes I certainly do remember very well the
incident involving a Super Connie and Capt. Steve Albulet.
I was in charge of Maintenance Mechanical Performance Analysis at the time.
The incident is still clear in my mind. In fact it was going to be one of
the stories I was planning to send on to you.
The flight in question was westbound and operating at a fairly high
altitude when it began experiencing losses of power on a number of engines.
They could restore power inmtermittently but it looked quite serious for a
while.
We felt the aircraft was experiencing the problem due to low outside
temperatures and wanted the crew to reduce attitude in an attempt to
experience warmer OAT's. Captain Albulet was not about to give away what he
no doubt considered his ace in the hole....altitude! He struggled on with a
varying number of engines continuing to give problems.
It was only when he was within virtual gliding distance of Goose Bay that
he stated to reduce altitude. When he did so,as predicted, he was able to
restore power to all engines. The cause was hang-up of the pistons in the
fuel injection pumps that fed fuel to the cylinders.
The problem was resolved by modification action.
By the way we knew Capt. Steve Albulet as "Squeaky Steve" due to his rather
high pitched voice when excited. He was a great pilot!

. In NetLetter nr 275, we made mention of the Russian super-jumbo AN24.
Vlad Slivitzky sets us straight -
Hi Everybody !
Although I don't expect to be commenting very often on aircraft type and
characteristics and things, not being a "technically minded fellow".., I
thought I would offer, as an exception, the following comment:
Re: RUSSIA DEVELOPS SUPER-JUMBO. Of course I wish the Sukhoi Design Bureau
team all kinds of luck and success in this endeavour. God knows they need
some successes these days, when the whole country, including the Russian
aircraft manufacturing industry, is in such dire straits. I have some
doubts, however, that they will succeed on their own without large foreign
(or "New Russian") financial investments. That, by the way is an aside.
The main reason I write is to correct a small error in the report. Currently
the world's largest Cargo aircraft is the Antonov AN-124 also known as the
Ruslan (as in "Ruslan and Ludmila"), a legendary Russian hero. The poor
little AN-24 is a Viscount vintage turboprop that still forms a major part
of the CIS domestic fleets. It's not very comfortable !

The following are actual stories told by travel agents about their
actual experiences (and you wonder why US citizens generally score
less than the rest of the world on geography):
A secretary called in looking for a hotel in Los Angeles. She gave
me various names off a list, none of which I could find. I finally
had her fax me the list. To my surprise, it was a list of hotels in
New Orleans, Louisiana, which has the postal zip code LA. She
thought the LA stood for Los Angeles and that New Orleans was a
suburb of L.A. Worst of all, when I called her back, she wasn't
even embarrassed.
A man called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what
was wrong with the vacation in Orlando. He said he was expecting an
ocean-view room. I tried to explain that that's not possible, since
Orlando is in the middle of the state. He replied, "Don't lie to
me. I looked on the map and Florida is a very thin state."

. Update on AGM '98 from the National President of Pionairs - Olie Moore -
Subject: AGM '98 & AGM '99
There were 423 members in attendance. Roy McCormack had prepared the
Registration & Table Seating charts on computer for the first time at an
AGM. There was a chart which read 'Who's at the AGM?' People found
friends they hadn't seen in a long time. Roy & his wife June; Fraser
O'Shaughnessy and his wife Rosemary; and many of the District Director's
and their wives helped in the large task of registering people as they
arrived.
Bill Ripley and his wife Bev worked on the tours. The weather was
excellent for the Sunday tour to Niagara, the Monday afternoon City tour
and the Tuesday luncheon cruise on the lake.
The reception was held in the Lakeview Room, which is at the top of the
Hotel and gives an excellent view of the city with the CN Tower, the
Dome and the sailboats out on the lake. There were cash bars and the
hors d'oeuvres were served by hotel staff.
The Dinner Dance was great fun. Gordie Tapp came to entertain us and
Peter Appleyard and his orchestra gave us excellent dancing music.
Gordie and Peter together with their wives joined us for the delicious
dinner.
There were two door prizes donated by Canadian Interline Travel, and
Dargal Interline.
Lamar Durrett was our guest speaker at the Banquet and he gave us a very
encouraging message about Air Canada. We are in great shape!! He and
his wife, Barbara are charming and spent time circulating to speak to as
many of the attendees as possible. As is the custom each year, the head
table was piped in to the dinner. The piper was a member of the Toronto
Police Pipe Band. AC donated a door prize of two AC passes, confirmed
space, anywhere on the system.
Doug Lovat & Paul Garratt gave very informative talks at the first
business meeting and Roger Clarke & Irene Vazalinskas joined in for the
Question & Answer panel. Irene will be retiring at the end of May and
will be greatly missed as she has been a dedicated employee and someone
Pionairs called on for information and help when preparing the Travel
Guide for the first interim publication. Irene introduced Vicky Benoit
as her replacement and we look forward to a good relationship with
Vicky.
At the Tuesday morning business meeting Roy McCormack, our Treasurer,
presented the Financial report; Leo Goulet our Pension & Benefits
representative gave us an update on our pensions and benefits and our
President Olie Moore presented many other items for discussion. Ron
Vigars gave a good talk about the Netletter and encouraged everyone to
'join'. There were door prizes won at each of these meetings which were
donated by the 14 District Directors. Bob Robbins & Don Demeza spoke on
the Travel Guide and certificates of appreciation were presented by Olie
Moore to those who had worked on the publication. Bob Robbins, chairman
of the group;
Don Demeza, chief writer; Stephanie Mandzie, District Director from
Winnipeg, Ron Vigars from the USA and Al Croome, District Director from
London,ON, who all did some research.
The AGM '99 will be held at the Sheraton Wall Centre in Vancouver. The
dates are April 25,26,27/99.
The hotel is beautiful, only 4 years old and is on Burrard St. Very
close to shopping & restaurants. Other hotels in the USA as well as
Canada were researched but the rates were higher or the facilities were
not adequate. We hope for a good attendance. Look forward to seeing
you there!!

. More comments on the AGM '98
From Bob Troup -
Hi,Fellow Passengers,
Had a great time at the A.G.M. in Toronto. It sure was nice to meet and
greet so many old friends, and to spend a few hours reminiscing about the
great times we had spent on shared holidays. " Our Gang " consisted of Gord
McMullen, Charlie Pungent, Bill Stevens, George Daman and Chuck Kennedy,
and their respective spouses. All of us had started with the Company in
Winnipeg, and undergone the somewhat traumatic move to Dorval. I think this
dislocation was partly responsible for our becoming such a close-knit crew.
We could have spent hours recounting our many vacations spent together,
from the famous $99.00 all-inclusive fam trip to the Hawaain Islands, to
villas in Jamaica and long weekends over in London. I have kept a journal
of all the trips that Dolly and I have made since joining T.C.A., and it
makes very interesting reading.
But, alas, how the times have
changed. I was fortunate enough to win the door prize on the final evening
of the A.G.M. last week; a positive space pass for two, anywhere on the
system, presented by Lamar Durrett, and I am at a loss to know where to go.
We usually spend some time in Barbados in the winter, but, I think
forty-two trips to that beautiful island are enough; time for a change,
don`t you think? So I am looking for some ideas. It will be marvellous not
to have to worry about getting on a flight, it took four days to get out of
Grantley Adams last March, and we are getting a bit long in the tooth for
that !!! All suggestions will be considered. Thanks.

YYZ NEWS -- TUESDAY, MAY 5, 1998
1) Air Ukraine (UKR/6U) have joined the ranks of scheduled international
carriers at YYZ. They will be flying bi-weekly on Saturdays with inbound
flight making a tech-stop at Shannon enroute from Kiev to YYZ.
Scheduled arrival time is 1615 hrs and departing at 1815 hrs.
2) Finnair (FIN/AY) will re-commence their summer only scheduled service on
23 May with two MD-11s per week from/to Helsinki on Wednesdays
and Saturdays. Arrival time is 1450 hrs and departing at 1730 hrs.
3) Air Portugal-TAP (TAP/TP) has officially ceased flying into YYZ as of
end of April 1998. However, Air Luxor (LXR) have commenced service as
of May 3rd operating on Thursdays and Sundays to Lisbon. They are using
the same L-1011-500 that TAP was using and so far at least with no name
on it. It is believed that Air Luxor is a new charter company set up by
TAP to operate on some of their former routes.
4) MALEV (MAH/MA) will commence summer operations effective May 24th
operating on Wednesdays and Sundays from/to Budapest till end of August,
then on Tuesdays during September.
5) JARO International(LRC/JT) will commence summer operations effective
Sunday May 24th with weekly service from/to Bucharest. One of the very
few passenger Boeing 707s left in service in the world.
6) Aeroflot International (AFL/SU) ceased flying to YYZ on April 1st,
but is expected to resume service in June.
7) Air Canada (ACA/AC) has received Canadair Regional Jet C-FZSI (MSN7160)
and put it back into flying again as of May 2nd. This brings the fleet
back to a total of 23 aircraft.
8) Canadi>n Airlines International (CDN/CP) commenced flying Toronto to
Boston May 4th along with their partner Canadi>n Regional (CDR/CP) four
times per day.

It's Jenn Callum, writing for my father, Bryan McCormick - he wants to know
what kind of special deals (if any) he can get at Disney World. For

They're taking our daughter for a week in September.
Would anyone know this information?
Appreciate your help!

. Bob Robbins sends us an upade on AGM 98 -
So much went on in the four days, that I find it hard to structure
things for you. Here are some of the highlights I perceived:
- I think Roy McCormack reported a total attendance of 423 persons.
- I especially cherish the unplanned "reunions" with people I'd worked with;
they started the evening we arrived, and kept happening from breakfast time
to bedtime for five days. Heartwarming happenings - every one of them.
Goose Bay alumni sparked so many remembrances of exactly fifty years ago.
It was great to chat with Bill Willows, Claude Berry, and of course my recent
working partner Don Demeza. I'd hoped to talk "Goose Bay" with Charley
Mackie, sparked by his items in "BETWEEN yOURSELVES", so was disappointed at
not finding him on the participant lists.
Len Sampson and I swapped some good lies about the starting days of TCA's
own Air Cargo Services at Montreal's International Terminal a couple of
years later
- 19 Ottawa District Pionairs attended: - Incoming District Director
Pat Hare, Bev. and Tom Anderson, Don and June Demeza, Ann and Rodney Dove,
Grace and John Macauley, Malcolm and Sally Macdougall, Ilene Pedwell,
Jessie Rougeau, Noreen Searson, Rachel Tennant, Helen and Lloyd Wedge,
Anne and Bob Robbins.
- Most Pionairs and many spouses seemed to enjoy the numerous Agenda items
of the Monday and Tuesday mornings' Business Meetings.
Especially outstanding were the presentations of Doug Lovat, Director
of Pensions and Employee Benefits, of Paul Garratt, Vice-President of
Human Resources and Roy McCormack, Pionairs' National Treasurer. Each
used overhead-projected transparencies to get across complex messages.
- Doug Lovat described how our Pension Fund continued to accrue substantial
investment earnings, and now tops C$5 billion. He also detailed the
background to the increase in premiums for the Voluntary Supplementary Health
Plan; amounts claimed are steadily increasing as average age of Plan
participants increases, medication prices rise, and as Provinces cut back on
Medicare coverage.
Doug and delegates discussed the cancellation of services provided by
"Metropolitan Assistance for Travel Emergencies" (MATE). Doug explained that
this did not change the amount of coverage provided by the Supplementary
Health Plan for involuntary out-of-country expenses (a lifetime maximum
amount of C$25,000).
The MATE program provided various of kinds of assistance to help
subscribers obtain travel-emergency assistance, but any cash paid out came
from the individual's Air Canada Supplementary Health Plan coverage.
He stressed that in many out-of-country health emergencies, expenses quickly
soar 'way above $25,000, so he urged anyone travelling outside of Canada
(and sometimes when travelling in Canada outside their home Province) to
purchase substantially higher coverage. Such extra insurance often includes
at least some of the help-finding services that were provided by MATE.
- Paul Garratt's presentation to the delegates' Business Meeting,
and President and CEO Lamar Durrett's closing banquet presentation both
focussed on the Company's 1997 stellar economic performance.
However that subject was complex, and both executives had attentive
audiences. Mr. Durrett made it clear that while 1997's bottom line well
exceeded any previous year's, the next big job is to reduce the large debt
that the Company carries. During the evening, he and Mrs. Durrett very
actively circulated among the 400-plus of us, leaving a trail of good
impressions.
- On checking into the AGM, everyone received an Interim Copy of the
"Air Canada Pionairs' Travel Guide". Bob Robbins and Don Demeza briefly
reviewed work done to date, and introduced other members of their team -
Al Croome, District Director, London Ont., Stefanie Mandzie, District
Director, Winnipeg. and Ron Vigars, Westport, Conn.
President Olie Moore was declared to be a team member for his help in getting
the Desktop Publishing and the Printing done by AC Headquarters!
Irene Valinskas, Manager Industry Travel provided tremendous help by editing
everything we wrote. Michele Sansoucy translated all the completed
material.
The project team have contributed a lot of hard work to date.
Now they need feedback from those more than 400 persons who have
been given an Interim Copy. Please contribute an hour of your
time to study the Guide and to let us have:
* Your questions
* Your criticisms
* Your compliments
* Your suggestions
See the Guide's Cover Page for where to send your effort. This will
enable completion of the first edition of the Guide for probable
distribution to all Pionairs in early July.
The future? It depends upon feedback from retirees and the availability
of volunteers.
- President Olie Moore presented a Pionairs' plaque of appreciation for her
help over the years to Irene Vazalinskas, Manager Industry Travel.
Irene retires at month's end.
- There were many more highlights.

Dear Tom, I am volunteering the Northern California Pionair Group to
help in the project. If you can gather the book in Canada and send
them down to SFO via Air Canada Cargo (with cargo passes), we will
deliver them to Pier 23 in San Francisco.

Tom Grant makes this comment -
We got this wonderful response from N. Ca and Mac Francis.
In order to coordinate this effort, readers should not send their books just
yet.
They should package them and get them ready for shipment and let me know
that they are ready. This way Mac will not have to go to SFO and the Pier
too often. I will run what we are doing on the Pionairs website.
Cheers, Tom Grant <

. Charles Mackie thought we would enjoy this tale -
Subject: The Labrador Cat
Here is a little story that happened to me away back in 1946 while I
was OIC in Goosebay Labrador. It's not directly concerned with aviation
but it was a memorable occasion for myself.
The building we where housed in Goosebay was one of the first building
constructed in Goosebay, and was called Chateau Terrington.
It had the first control tower erected on the roof of this building,
and was not in use because of the newer tower etc in place in Labrador. So
it was an excellent place for myself to put up my Ham radio station under
the call of VO6L.
The caretaker and housekeeper for the guys at this time where an
elderly Swiss couple who brought along a cat with them when they arrived.
The cat had the distinction of being the only cat in Goose bay at the time,
lots of dogs but no other cats so was spoiled and made quite a fuss over.
Well the cat got sick, and the old lady asked me to try and get some
medicine for the cat from the RCAF Dispensary, so I went and they gave
me some medicine for the cat, but the cat did not get any better.
One day I was on the air talking to a chap in New Jersey and in the
course of the conversation he was calling himself "Doc" so I asked him
what sort of doctor that he was, and he said he was a Vet.
So I told him about the sick cat that we had and how important it was
to the local community and could he precribe for the cat from the symptoms
I gave him. He did and I then went back to the dispensary and got the
required medicine and gave them to the old lady to give to the cat. Well
the cat recovered nicely.
A few days after this took place I was on the air again and there was
this chap frantically trying to get a hold of me. It was the Vet and he
had told several audiences re his prescribing for the cat in Labrador
and also told the local press, so everywhere he went people where asking
him about the Labrador cat.
I told the Vet that I had the cat on hand and was going to make it
meow proof of the cat being okay. Well I did everything to that cat to
make it make a noise but not a peep out it, so the cat got curious about
the microphone you could see your reflection it it. Well the cat saw this
and as soon as it touched the mike with its nose, it got a shock from the
RF energy that was on it.
Well that sure got the cat howling.
Eventually we regained our composure and turned the transmission back
to the Vet in New Jersey, and we heard a lot of howling and barking from the
dogs located in his hospital, as he had his radio staton located in the
hospital and the animals there heard the Cat and were reacting accordingly.
I still have the press clippings sent to me by the Vet a Dr Charles
Dibbell, relating the story to the Press in New Jersey.
So hope you find it interesting , and have lots more stories to tell
you as time goes on.
Hope this finds you all Healthy and Happy
Charles Mackie

True Travel Stories
The following are actual stories told by travel agents (and you wonder why
US citizens generally score lower than the rest of the world on geography)...
I had someone who wanted to stay at the Bob Newhart Inn in Connecticut.
When I explained that the inn was fictional, the customer became very irate
and insisted "I know it is real, I see them check in every week!"
Also, I really did have someone ask for an aisle seat so that their hair
wouldn't get messed up by being near the window.
A client called inquiring about a package to Hawaii. After going over all
the cost info, she asked, "would it be cheaper to fly to California and
then take the train to Hawaii?"

. Tom Grant sends us this -
I was wondering how many of your readers take the National Geographics
and after reading them are reluctant to get rid of them unless it is to a
"good home." Now, since most of these readers have cargo passes, I would
like to suggest a possible destination for the valuable, but not easily
placed, issues.
I would direct everyone to the January 1998 NGeo and the "Helping Build
a Bridge" article in the BEHIND THE SCENES department. Also they should
have a look at http://www.bridge.org/ which is the Bridge-to-Asia site.
The question is how can we get our NGeo mags to SFO and to the docks using
Air Canada and volunteer power?
I ask your readers to suggest some ideas after looking at the article and
the website. They can email me, Tom Grant, at
(Sounds like something the Pionairs USA could think about - eds)

. Following on our recent article re the Vanguard, Mike Leduc sends this -
I remember the V/G quite well, as a matter of fact it was the first
aircraft in which I flew first class and it was in the rear! From a
passenger perspective, I quite liked the aircraft. It was fun (?) to
watch passengers when the craft reached an altitude where the prop pitch
changed and the engine RPMs changed.
Also, I remember a former mechanic who transferred to our department, one
Harold Macdonald, who didn't like the V/G. I believe he said "One Vanguard
should be cut lenght-wise and put on display to show how not to build an
aircraft". Cheers, Michael Leduc

. Found on the Internet.
El Al announce that only cartoons and nature movies will be shown in the
rear section of its B747 for passengers who find in-flight movies
'too raunchy'!
A New airline British South Atlantic Airways based in the Falkland
Islands will be operating a B737-200.
(Some of us will recall that B.S.A.A were the initials for British South
American Airways, a forerunner to B.O.A.C and now British Airways - eds)
AIRCRAFT ORDERS
German leasing company Bavaria is ordering five Boeing 717-200s.
This is the first order for the 100 seat 717-200 since Boeing decided to
rename the MD-95 which it acquired as part of the Boeing McDonnell merger.
Prior to the merger, the MD-95 attracted a single customer, the former
ValuJet, with an order for 50 aircraft.
The roll out of the first 717-200 is planned for June 10.
French regional carrier Brit Air (DB) has an order with Bombardier
Aerospace for eight CL-65 aircraft.
US flag carrier Continental Airlines (CO)'s regional subsidiary ordered
25 Embraer ERJ-135 jets with options for a further 50 aircraft.
The first ERJ-135 rolled out of Embraer's factory in Brazil on May 12.
A Cathay Pacific Boeing 747-200 was the first widebody aircraft to land
at Hong Kong's new Chek Lap Kok airport as part of the Hong Kong airport
authority's first airdrome trial.
The new Chek Lap Kok airport is to begin commercial operations on July 6 to
replace Kai Tak airport.
A STORY OF THE WEIRD:
A Denver man is suing Continental Airlines because he was injured by a
tubby seatmate. Michael Townes claims he needed surgery to repair tendon
damage caused when his elbow was pinned to the armrest for two hours.

. Smilie.
Back in the days when direction finding equipment was being installed in
towers, a pilot enroute from Pensacola to Norfolk and not knowing
exactly what his position was, called:
"Atlanta Tower, this is N1234"
"N1234, go ahead"
"Could you give me one of those practice DF steers?"
"Sorry but we don't give *practice* DF steers."
(short pause)
"Well, how about one of them other kind, then?"
