. Need to know -
We have been following the dialogue on the acra mailing list on the
acra web site regarding Pass photo ID cards -
In our NetLetter nr 133 dated March 11th 1997 was the following information -
Quote -
'The following information from Irene Vazalinkas of Industry Travel Office -
Subject: Reissue of ID & Travel Cards for retirees.
We are planning to reissue all travel cards for the retiree
group next year. All those based in Monteral area will be
welcome to have their photo taken in our department.
All others will be given instructions to provide us with an
acceptable passport-sized black and white picture. We will
also be mailing signature forms'

David Livingstone provided this information -
.... the letter he'd mislaid probably went to eastern Canada only.
it was sent Sep 21 from Industry Travel to "those who retired prior to 1992
& who are still in posessionof 2 cards (the ID photo card and a travel
card)."
New cards will be issued this fall for eastern Canada retirees and
they expect to complete the project by the end of 1999 for other regions.
I assume most retirees west of the best haven't got the letter yet. I'd
include the whole text but I'm a lousy typist and I haven't yet figured out
how to scan and get an edited document instead of a picture.

CONTINENTAL TRYING TO SET UP ALLIANCE
Continental Airlines and Northwest Airlines have held talks about
widening their partnership to include three European carriers,
adding another ripple in the wave of global airline alliances.
The carrier has approached Air France, Italy's Alitalia and KLM Royal Dutch
Airlines about forming a larger global partnership.
A likely name for the alliance is Wing.
A British doctor who came to the rescue of a fellow passenger on
an American Airlines flight is suing the airline to recover the cost of
his intervention, which he puts at USD 200 per hour for a total of
USD 900. "I was asked by a rich, ruthless commercial organization
to undertake a service as a professional. I did that service. I did it
well. I deserve to be paid," said Dr. John Stevens, who has pledged
to donate the money to charity. American Airlines said it thanked
the doctor with a bottle of champagne and a flight voucher, which
he declined.
American Airlines is canceling flights due to a shortage of pilots.
American pilots take most of their retirement money in a lump sum
from a company mutual fund, and their contract provides for a three-
month window to retire at a set share price. As result, pilots who
leave now get retirement distributions based on July's stock prices
that were much higher than current performance. Lately American pilots
have been receiving distributions of up to us$3-million apiece at
retirement!

. Time for another story from Bill Norberg -
Subject: Our first 747 is damaged!
The arrival of our first 747 was a major event in the early spring of 1971.
We in Maintenance had been preparing for its arrival for a long time and
felt we knew quite a bit about them. However when you come face to face
with the first 747 you will be responsible for maintaining you feel a little
humbled. It was a huge aircraft and so much was to depend on its
performance and reliability.
We had no practical back up for a 747 flight at that time.
After the aircraft arrived at Gate 22 of the Dorval Terminal after its
delivery flight we moved it to our new 747 sized hangar for training and
modifications. We tended to treat the aircraft like fine china as no one
wanted the unenviable reputation of having "dinged" our first 747.
We had two bays in the new 747 hangar at Dorval and one was completed in
time to accept this first 747. As the construction work had just been
completed on this bay we wanted to be sure there were no tools, pieces of
construction material or other foreign objects that could fall off the
beams and walkways in the ceiling area of the hangar and hit the aircraft
below. We had our facilities people check all these areas the day before
and felt comfortable that all was well.
The aircraft was finally placed in the hangar. Not long after a
construction workers safety helmet was to fall directly on the top of the
747 damaging the SATcom antenna, for which we had no spare as it was not in
use at that time. We recovered the helmet but were never able to identify
its owner. No doubt a worker from the unfinished bay was curious and came
across the walkway to have a look at this marvellous new huge aircraft.
There is an old saying..."If it can happen....it usually does".
We eventually were to become good friends with the 747's and realized that
the sky did not fall if we had a technical problem with one of them. We
just had to take it on as we did with every other aircraft. As I remember
it we had 38 days of the operation on the Miami flight before we had our
first maintenance delay.
The honeymoon was over.

. Brian Dunn sends us some more information -
To clarify the item regarding the Air Canada 747-133s, here is the latest
info. FIN305 (C-FTOE) attempted to fly YYZ-YVR on Saturday morning
October 3rd, but blew #2 engine after takeoff and had to return to YYZ.
After an engine change, it went to the paint hangar and had the logo removed
from the tail and the titles and logo removed from the fuselage.
It ferried YYZ-YUL October 5th at 1500hrs. It will have seats removed from
inside and be flown presumably to Marana Arizona.
All three 747-133s have been sold jointly to P&W engines and Evergreen Intl.
P&W will get all the engines after the aircraft are ferried to the desert,
and Evergreen will have the airframes. We presume they will take off all
spare and usable parts, then eventually chop up the remains.
FIN304 (C-FTOD) is sitting at Montreal waiting its turn to be "un-painted"
and ferried south, while FIN303 (C-FTOC) will remain in service for another
week or two before being retired.

. Sheila Moscoe gives an update on the Pearson (YYZ) Airport retirees -
Subject: T2 Coffee Klatch
Well, our second monthly T2 Coffee Klatch was a huge success!!
We had almost 30 people there, and what a reunion!!! A few of our former
supervisors like Bill Mason (sporting a gray pony tail!!) and John
Cannemeyer were there. Now that we're all retired, they don't seem like
"older" supervisors anymore...just our age, if you know what I mean.
Anyhow, we are looking forward to putting out an updated name list and
seeing more airport sales retirees.
Spread the word. It's the first Tuesday of each month at the
Golden Griddle on Airport Road, in the Airway Centre,
just opposite the terminals.
P.S. I noticed in the Netletter you referred to Mississauga...but since
we're "oldtimers", we still like to refer to the airport as Toronto or
Pearson. Thanks SheilaThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

. Terry's travel tips.
U.K. Air Passenger Duty Tax
When departing the UK, there is a UKP10.00 tax included in your pass
cost if the destination is another UK destination or anywhere in the
European Union which includes Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Eire,
Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Finland,
Sweden, Norway and Iceland. For other worldwide destinations the tax is
UKP20.00.
Passengers travelling via Heathrow, Gatwick or any other UK airport to
destinations outside the UK will not be liable to pay twice, provided
they are not stopping over. It is suggested that you provide flight details
showing onward - intransit - travel to Industry Travel requesting a
refund of tax. For example if you use a pass Canada - UK - Canada it will
include the GBP20.00 tax for your return, if you use a zed ticket on an
airline to any other destination, the tax will be included in the fare
charged - you could be eligible for a refund if your onward travel is the
same day!
Always carry your Air Canada ID card as you may be asked to produce it
at check-in. Relatives, partners and buddies should also ensure they have
some form of identification with them, especially for domestic flights
on which a passport will not be required. Allow plenty of time to complete
check-in procedures. It is recommended that minimum check-in times be
exceeded.

ICEs to replace short-haul flights
German Railway and Lufthansa are agreed that rail will in the future largely
replace domestic air services. Although the switch will start modestly with
flights from Koln, Dusseldorf and Stuttgart converting to ICE services once
the Koln -- Frankfurt high speed line is completed, there are plans for
many more domestic air feeder routes to be covered by rail services in the
long term.
Key to the proposals is completion in 1999 of a dedicated inter-city station
at Frankfurt airport. Stations offering similar facilities are being built
or planned at the airports in Koln-Bonn, Dusseldorf, Berlin and Leipzig.
Meanwhile, Lufthansa passengers will from this month benefit from a
'moonlight check-in' facility in Dusseldorf, Koln, Bonn, Nurnberg and
Wuerzburg stations by handing in checked baggage and collecting a boarding
pass the evening before departure.
Not strictly air, but somewhat relevant.
The Australian government selected the French TGV for the Sydney - Canberra
high speed railway. Interestingly, Qantas is one of the partners in the
consortium which will build and operate the line. Qantas plans to eliminate
short-haul air services between the two cities after 2003.
The journey time would be 81 minutes, compared to 50 minutes flying time.
Sydney airport is around 40 minutes from the city by taxi.
The new line will run via Sydney airport with stations at the domestic and
international terminals.

. News from Toronto by Brian Dunn -
Aeroflot Russian International will be commencing scheduled service
into YYZ for the first time effective October 26th with twice-weekly
A310 flights. Their previous flights were officially charter flights.
This time they will route their Monday flights SVO-YUL-YYZ, then
non-stop YYZ-SVO for the return.
Mexicana Airlines will be moving over to Terminal 2 from Terminal 1
sometime this fall. They would like to become full members of the Star
Alliance group, but are now content to code-share with United to/from
U.S.A. points. It is expected that an announcement will be made about
Mexicana code-sharing with Air Canada on their services from Toronto and
Montreal to Mexico City once a moving date has been established.
Mexicana currently operates three A320s per week from/to Mexico City and
Toronto.
Air New Zealand and Air Canada have launched a new code-sharing
agreement effective October 8th. The Vancouver to HNL leg is flown with
Air Canada 767-300s on "wet-lease" to Air New Zealand, and then passengers
switch to Air New Zealand 767s for the HNL to Auckland leg.
Air New Zealand is set to become a full member of the Star Alliance group
in 1999. Brian Dunn

. Smilie.
We can't verify this story, but it seems that aircrews are getting more
resourceful about supplementing their incomes...
It is reported the following announcement was heard over the cabin PA system
of a Cathay Pacific B747:
"Ladies and gentlemen, we are overbooked and are offering anyone $1,000 plus
a seat on the next flight in exchange for their seat on this flight."
After a short pause, the offer was loudly accepted by someone in the cockpit.
Karl Eliason sends us another 'Southwest' joke -
This is an actual joke I heard on Southwest Airlines, just after a
very hard landing in Salt Lake City, one of the most bone jarring
experienced; The steward came on the intercom and said, "That was quite
a bump and I know what ya'll are thinking. I'm here to tell you it
wasn't the airlines fault, it wasn't the pilots fault, it wasn't the
flight attendants fault.......it was the asphalt!"

We receive many email notes thanking us for keeping in touch in a

I live in Mississauga Ont.
I retired from Air Canada on Apr/94 after spending 35 very happy years with
the company. I joined Trans-Canada Air Lines Jul/59 in Prestwick Scotland
in the commissary department, after four years there I transferred to sales
in both PIK and GLA. In Dec/70 I was successful in obtaining a transfer to
Flt Ops scheduling in YYZ, at that time we scheduled both pilots and IFS,
when these departments divided I decided to join IFS, there I remained as a
Flight Att. supervisor/OBM until my retirement.
I have been asked, when required to do consultant work for World Duty Free

. News from the districts -
The Vancouver Island District held their Fall Luncheon on Oct 7th, emceed
by the Director Bill Fisher to am appreciative crowd of 80 Pionairs and
guests which included 4 from Vancouver, 2 from Langley and several from
'Up Island', together with a group from the Maple Wings Vancouver Dogwood
Chapter.
Names of some of the Pionairs you may remember include Kitch Olson,
Ernie Olson, Edgar Farthing, Saville & June Hambleton, Cec & Arlene
McCulloch, Norm Stoddart, Leo Goulet, Sheldon Doskie, Fred & Monique Coyle,
Ernie & Lois North, Mr & Mrs Jack Somerset.
Bill Fisher entertained us with a variety of jokes before we enjoyed the
roast beef lunch. Guest speaker was Olie Moore, National President of
Pionairs who told us the tale of the 1st B747 for Air Canada being
accepted at the Boeing factory at Renton. This aircraft was being used
for publicity purposes, but the cost of hiring professional 'passengers'
was more than the budget allowed. Roy McCormack, National Treasurer for
Pionairs was the rep. at that time and came up with an idea. It seemed
that a local golf club was expanding its facilities but were short of
money, so they agreed to have 200 or so of their members act as
passengers for the
photographs in exchange for a donation towards their future plans.
(Olie did not say if the 'passengers' got Aeroplan points for that!- eds)
Olie informed us that -
attempts are being made to form two more districts of Pionairs,
one in Newfoundland and another at Sydney/Grace Bay.
The decision to hold the 1999 AGM in Vancouver was, originally, due to
the most favourable costs after an indepth review of the offers from
Anaheim. With the unfavourable exchange rate now prevailing it would
appear that the decision was the correct one. The accommodation cost
for Vancouver is ca$127.00 per night and is good 3 days ahead and 3
days after the AGM to allow for those who wish to stay longer.
The package for the 1999 AGM is due to be mailed mid January.
The company has agreed to print the new Travel Booklet, and this is
planned to be mailed to all retirees by early November. Updates will
be via the Horizons.
In closing, Bill Fisher reminded us that the Christmas Lunch will be at
the Dunsmuir Lodge on Thursday Dec 10th. Cost ca$20.00 pp.

Recently you added another retiree to the list, Stu Muirhead,
renew our old friendship in YUL and, as we were planning a trip through
Penticton, arranged to get together at that time.
On Sept 13 he had a severe stroke and is now recovering slowly in
Penticton General Hospital. It was quite a shock when we arrived on the 27th
to meet him to find that he was in the hospital and not the restaurant for
dinner.
I pass this info on to any of his friends either in the valley or YUL.
Best regards Norm Stoddart

ALFRED HITCHCOCK, REVISITED:
Airline flights get delayed for any of a number of reasons, but this is
one takes the suet.
A small bird flew into the cockpit of a UAL plane last week as the crew
was completing preps prior to pushback on a Dulles-London run.
No flight of fancy, this, the bird managed to hide in the Boeing 777-200's
electrical panel.
It took 2 1/2 hours to de-bird the plane after which the airline decided
to change planes, apparently wanting to play it safe in case the little
fella had pecked on some important part. Let this be a lesson to all of
you would-be stowaways. Don't try to play it cheep.
WOULD YOU STOP BUGGING ME:
It's always something: screaming babies, hygienically challenged seatmates,
what gives? The passengers of one recent Delta ATL to SFO flight were
really and truly bugged.
Cockroaches, a "handful" of `em, were spotted by pax and crew near the
food service area. The pilot bugged out, refusing to fly the bird.
Flight 217 was delayed for three hours. Said a Delta spokesperson,
"We're obviously not going to accept anything less than a pest-free plane."

. After reading the story of the Viscount structure from Bill Norberg,
Bill Sim sent this message to Bill Norberg, but feel sure he would want
to share it -
Hi Bill,
Maybe you could tell them the story, about how the insulation was applied
to the skin of the Viscount when we received them from England. I remember
it well, the adhesive was red in colour, I still believe that this was the
same substance the I used in The R.A.F. for anti-corrosive treatment on
metallic parts.
We called this material 663. In the R.A.F. I was a M.T.M.
Motor Transport Mechanic. While I was with 90 M.U. I was assigned to the
Anti-corrosive unit, I have forgotten the name of the town it was between
Preston and Blackpool,(just remembered the name it was Warton ), some very
good nights at The Blackpool Tower.
I remember well, that to inspect the aircraft skin from the inside of the
aircraft, we had to remove the fibre glass insulation. As the English would
say "we build them, you maintain them", anyway it was a tough job with lots
of solvents around. It's a wonder we didn't blow the aircraft apart, one
spark and the crew and the aircraft would have been gone. We were a happy
bunch singing and laughing enjoying the job. We did not know that we were
doped up from the solvents we were using, in those days we only smoked
cigarettes.
Bill, thanks for the memory. If my story is a little mixed up, we can blame
it on some of the fumes that maybe are still in my system from the old
Viscount days in Winnipeg. Maybe you would like to check out how the carpet
were stuck to the aircraft floor, before double-sided adhesive tape, of
course. This was all changed by the same guys, before the spar job.
I was there, Bill Sim.

SHORT FINAL...
Y'know, we've got to get our kids out more. As evidenced by this tale -
After completing a flight lesson for the day, the guy asked the instructor
if he could give his 12-year-old son his first ride in an airplane.
The instructor being a genuine promoter of general aviation (and a good
friend), the youngster got his first ride in the left seat.
After landing, the instructor asked his young charge how he liked the ride,
to which he exclaimed, "Wow! Just like the flight simulator on my computer,
only the graphics are a whole lot better!"

Subject: AC YVR Pionairs Fall Luncheon September 23/98
It was considered a very successful and enjoyable event as 125 Pionairs
joined together in a Happy Hour/Meet and Greet session prior to a the
luncheon.
Ollie & Mary Moore, our National President and Secretary were unable to
attend for obvious reasons, however their greetings and good wishes were
extended via email and the chair.
Our special guests were Pat Crothers, DSM Holland America Cruise Line and
Westours Inc., and husband Mel, (Signature Vacations).
Pat's address was extremely interesting, as well as the video featuring
Holland America Cruising and the building and transiting of the Panama Canal.
Following the address many prizes were awarded the lucky ticket holders and
the meeting concluded at 1415.
A special questionaire was distributed to all attendees asking for members
input relative to future YVR Pionair activities and programs for 1998 and
1999.
All members have been apprised of the Canada Pionair AGM scheduled for
April 26/27/28/1999.
The YVR Pionair Spring Luncheon Date is Sunday April 28, 1999 at the

. Help!
Klaus Stahl looking for some help -
We are planning to travel to Australia/New Zealand in November 1998.
Can anyone give us advice on the best (least expensive, most direct) flights
from North American to Auckland or Sydney, and on air travel within
Australia itself? Right now we are under the impression that for flights
WITHIN Australia retired employees get no discount at all. Even the
Boomerang fares, i.e. discount fares available to everyone, appear expensive
compared to the discounts we usually enjoy. - We are aware of Air New
Zealand's discount, but they do not fly within Australia.
If someone has been to Australia/New Zealand within the past 12 months,
any other travel hints re hotel discounts etc. would also be appreciated.

JETSON-LIKE COMMUNICATIONS AIRCRAFT
A new aircraft called High Altitude Long Operation-Proteus is designed
to circle for hours some 50,000 feet high over major cities, functioning
like a communications relay satellite does in space and carrying
broadband wireless services, including high-speed Internet access and
video- teleconferencing. A region might receive 24-hour service from a
fleet of three planes, each flown by two-man crews on eight-hour shifts,
with each aircraft flying fixed patterns providing coverage to an area
75 miles in diameter. Industry analyst Jeffrey Kagan says, "I knew it
wouldn't be too long before the Jetsons became reality. In the next
several years, you will see truckloads of methods for delivering high
speed methods of data to homes and offices." (San Jose Mercury
News 23 Sep 98)
FREE INTERNET SERVICE IN THE U.K.
British consumer electronics retailer Dixons Group and
telecommunications firm Energis are teaming up to provide a free
Internet service to citizens in the U.K. Users will not be required to
pay any registration or usage fees, but will be charged $1.68 a minute
for technical support. The move is expected to force other Internet
service providers in that country to reevaluate their pricing
structures. (Wall Street Journal 23 Sep 98)

. Time for another story from Bill Norberg -
Subject: The L-1011 and ground spoilers.
The tragic loss of the DC-8 in YYZ in 1970 due to inadvertant deployment of
ground spoilers in flight was to have repercussions when it was time for
the MOT to provide type certification for the L-1011 in Canada. The MOT was
very concerned about what had happened to the DC-8 and were determined to
use the power of their office to bring about whatever was necessary to
prevent future such incidents. We had a number of meetings with our
technical specialists and theirs to discuss what could or should be
done. The matter as we saw it was one of adherence to established and
approved procedures rather than an interlock or mechanical method to
prevent such deployment.
One could take their thinking to such actions as fuel shut-off valves or
even shutting down engines in flight. Those actions are often necessary but
no one would intentionally use them in an inappropriate manner. In any
event their concern was raised when they learned that the use of ground
spoilers in flight was a fundamental part of the auto approach system of
the L-1011. It was called "Direct Lift Control" or DLC and was a method by
which the aircraft in an auto approach configuration was maintained on the
correct glide slope.
Normally this action was carried out by the autopilot where any deviation
from the proper glide slope sent a signal to the autopilot elevator servo
to apply a corrective action and restore the aircraft to the correct
position. This tended to make an aircraft "porpoise" or hunt somewhat about
the proper glide slope angle. In the DLC system the ground spoilers were
deployed to a 10 degree angle before engaging the auto approach system. Any
deviation from the proper glide slope now fed a signal to the ground
spoiler actuator and either increased or decreased the ground spoiler
angle. As the ground spoiler angle increased the wing lost some lift...as
it decreased it increased wing lift. This had the effect of moving the
aircraft vertically up or down rather than in a cyclic hunting fashion.
This tended to keep the aircraft tightly coupled to the glide slope with
minimum hunting action. It was a great system.
The MOT were not convinced and we had to take a number of their key people
to the Lockheed plant at Palmdale California for a test flight and
demonstrations by the Lockheed staff. We used the L-1011 aircraft being used
for certification tests by Lockheed. It was equipped with extensive
instrumentation as well as water tanks throughout the cabin to permit
testing at various C of G configurations. There were only seats at the front
of the aircraft for about 10 people. It also had an escape chute from the
cockpit area down through one of the lower cargo doors which could be
activated under emergency conditions. We were each assigned a parachute and
given instructions about how to exit.
It was a fascinating flight and the MOT staff were given an excellent
demonstration of the DLC system and its capabilities. Our problems were
over as far as certification were concerned. It was interesting to note that
during that flight the aircraft flew in excess of Mach .9 for the first
time as well.

US airlines are now required to ask international passengers for the
name and telephone number of a next-of-kin whom to contact in
case of necessity. Passengers do not have to provide the
information but the airlines will have to have a system in place to
collect the information. The obligation stems from the difficulty
TWA had in locating relatives of some of Flight 800's victims.

From Don Hancock - Director Vancouver BC Pionairs -
Subject: AC YVR Pionairs Fall Luncheon September 23/98

Subject: Pier 21 Halifax
Had a call from Cathy McCann (ex Customer Service Agent) who arrived in
Canada through Pier 21, she thought that there might be others in the
Pionairs who also arrived in Canada via Pier 21 that would be interested in
the Web site, this would also include any veteran, War Bride who might have
passed throught Pier 21 in Halifax. The URL is:

It was interesting to note that
during that flight the aircraft flew in excess of Mach .9 for the first
time as well.

. Terry's travel tips.
US airlines are now required to ask international passengers for the
name and telephone number of a next-of-kin whom to contact in
case of necessity. Passengers do not have to provide the
information but the airlines will have to have a system in place to
collect the information. The obligation stems from the difficulty
TWA had in locating relatives of some of Flight 800's victims.
