. With the approach of the 50th anniversary in Nassau, George McKillop
shares these memories -
Inaugural flight December 3rd 1948. Recollections of one of the first
maintenance representatives almost fifty years later.
The Station Managers (old titles) were John Gilmore, Nassau ; Bob Cowan,
Kingston and Arn Penner, Port of Spain. The sales rep was Pat Labrie,
formerly a Major in the Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry, who
subsequently retired from the Company as Vice President, US Region
The maintenace reps were Emmet White, Nassau; Jim Breckenridge, Kingston
and George McKillop, Kingston and Nassau. Jim, a Licensed Mechanic at that
time, accompanied the flight from Kingston to Port of Spain and supervised
the servicing of the aircraft on the overnight layover.
Some of the pilots, Lindy Rood, Gil McLaren, Jack Jones, Steve Abulet,
Roger Smith and Bob Bowker, of "Bowkers Airline" fame.
Some of the flight attendants were Gordy Kay, Dorothy Gilmore and
Mel Latour.
C D Howe, Minister of Transport was in Nassau over Christmas. One of his
colleagues had to return to Toronto accompanied by a Medical Attendant.
This required four seats on a North Star aircraft. If Mr Howe's immediate
reaction was any indication I'm sure our president Gordon MacGregor got an
earful of his opinion of Company regulations.
An engine change in Nassau in late December was the first time a Merlin was
transported in a North Star. This was prior to the development of
the "walking beam".
( A mechanical device developed within the Company to assist in the
unloading an engine without damaging the aircraft.) Moreover there was no
goose-neck crane available at the airport and the difficulty encountered in
unloading the Merlin is not among my fondest memories of Little old Nassau.
Cargo custom requirements for Kingston required multiple copies of all
documents and when asked when the aircraft would be ready for departure,
Keith Lindo of the ground handling company replied "when the weight of the
paper equals that of the aircraft".
Arn Penner's family was due to arrive from Toronto and upon boarding the
aircraft one day Jim noticed a woman with an infant, when he asked if she
was Mrs Penner she replied "no I'm Mrs Spooner".
Regards George McKillop

A PAX BLACK LIST:
Airline passengers who act like horses' backsides might find themselves
hoofing it under a new passenger blacklist system.
The plan to ban bad passengers was prodded along after a British
Airtours flight attendant was hit over the head and slashed with a broken
vodka bottle by a man who got mad at the stewardess because she was being
"aggressive."
Several airlines are now working on a known offenders registry.
Singapore Airlines is to join the Star Alliance in 1999, according to
Lufthansa chief executive Juergen Weber. Lufthansa and Singapore
Airlines signed an agreement on a strategic alliance in November
1997, a move usually considered as the first step in joining the Star
Alliance.
Israeli carrier El Al is to offer the first in-flight money changing
service. The airline's Fly & Change service allows passengers to
buy up to USD 500 worth of the local currency of their destination.
Available first on flights between Tel Aviv and London, Frankfurt,
Paris and Zurich, the service is set to cover the entire El Al network
within a few months.

. News from Toronto - supplied by Brian Dunn.
British Airways retired their first 747-136 G-AWNA this recently and
one side of the aircraft will be painted in the original BOAC livery to
mark the occasion. The aircraft logged some 51 million miiles, 21,000
flights, and 102,000 hours. The last flight operated from Philadelphia
to London and the aircraft was then ferried to a paint shop in Cardiff
Wales.
Air Nova and Air Alliance jointly announced their intention to
consolidate both operations into one airline, early in 1999. The
consolidated DHC-8 service and the BAe146 jets will operate under the
Air Nova banner, while the remaining Beech 1900D services will continue
to operated under the Air Alliance name.

After a real crusher of a landing in Phoenix, the Flight
Attendant came on with, "Ladies and Gentlemen, please
remain in your seats until Captain Crash and the Crew have
brought the aircraft to a screeching halt up against the
gate. And, once the tire smoke has cleared and the warning
bells are silenced, we'll open the door and you can pick
your way through the wreckage to the terminal.
Part of a Flight Attendant's arrival announcement: "We'd

of us here at US Airways."

. From Tom Grant -
Subject: Pionairs Website
It is with regret that we inform you that the Pionairs website will be
going off-line in December. We have found that there has been scant support
from all levels of the Pionairs executive for this Internet presence. The
small "pats on the head" that we have received in no way compensate for the
lack of direction from the National executive to the the Districts
regarding the support in the way of information to be given to the editor
for presentation on the website for benefit of Pionairs.
We know that this project was instigated by us, but the Pionairs executive
did give the official OK for it to go online. We expected support for this
effort and have received none. In fact, we are still waiting for the list
of executives (national and districts) and their contacts. We still receive
most of our information about events from the NetLetter produced by Terry
Baker and Vesta Stevenson - a publication which emphasizes its
non-association with the Pionairs in that it is for all retired persons of
TCA/Air Canada not just members of the Pionairs.
However, we are not about to abandon the Internet medium for retired
employees. We think they deserve this global presence even if some of the
leadership will not embrace the technology. To this end, we will be going
online with a new website for all retired employees, emphasizing images of
the past as well as free electronic notification of events for those that
wish to have them posted. We will also be strenghtening our ties with the
travel aspects of ACRA's website. And we, like the NetLetter, will
emphasize that the website is for all retirees. With this new direction we
know where we stand with respect to support and feedback.

I joined TCA in WPG in 1946 and was sent to Ottawa, where I spent four
years. In 1950 we went to Toronto and stayed there for 8 years.
In 1958 we went to Montreal until I retired in 1977.
I went back to work in 1979 with IATA and retired from them in 1986.
We moved to Newcastle in 1986 and have been here ever since.
Always look forward to Pionairs meeting.

And now one from Alistair Alves -
I joined Air Canada July 10, 1967 as a clerk in the YUL station office.
In April 1969, I transfered to Flight Dispatch as an Assistant Flight
Dispatcher still in YUL. We were just a few doors down the hall from Vesta
in the teletype centre. I was transferred to YYZ in 1978 when the Flight
Dispatch offices were consolidated and promoted to Flight Dispatcher in the
fall of that year. We were in the Administration building at the airport at
that time. We moved into new quarters on Airport road in September 1995
and I was promoted to Chief Flight Dispatcher, Duty at that time.
I retired April 1, 1998 after 31 years and 9 months service.
The airline has gone through many changes during those years and is still
very much the best airline to work for.

Navigator - Coffee, cream and sugar.
Who said Captains had the best of evrything?
A new Stewardess was doing her recorded message on a recent flight from
Winnipeg to Vancouver.
"Ladies and gentlemen", she intoned, "the captain is experiencing some
slight turbulence. Would you kindly remain seated with your aseatbelts
fastened until the aircraft comes to a complete stop."
And that's when the passengers broke up. The plane had just taken off,
she had inadvertantly given a medley of the take-off and landing routines.

. Last July, Air Canada staff at Heathrow ensured a safe shipment of a
classic 1929 Duisenberg to Toronto. Customer Service Manager
Martin Chomistek and Lead Station Attendant Frankie Swift supervised the
load on a B747 combi. The GBP300,000.00 car had been in Amsterdam for the

. Ernie Bell sends us a bio -
I joined TCA in WPG in 1946 and was sent to Ottawa, where I spent four
Regards Ernie
The airline has gone through many changes during those years and is still
very much the best airline to work for.

. Smilie.
Both from 'The Sky's the limit' March 1967 'Between Ourselves' edition.
A reader sent this little note he found in the galley of one of our
DC-8's. It was written on a piece of macking tape and stuck to the fridge.
Captain - Coffee black (left hand)
Captain - Coffee and cream (right hand)
Second Officer - Coffee and small kiss
Navigator - Coffee, cream and sugar.
Who said Captains had the best of evrything?
A new Stewardess was doing her recorded message on a recent flight from
Winnipeg to Vancouver.
"Ladies and gentlemen", she intoned, "the captain is experiencing some
slight turbulence. Would you kindly remain seated with your aseatbelts
fastened until the aircraft comes to a complete stop."
And that's when the passengers broke up. The plane had just taken off,
she had inadvertantly given a medley of the take-off and landing routines.

. Special edition of the NetLetter -
Internet etiquette suggests that capital letters imply shouting,
the following information was received in captial letters - we are not
intending to shout at you!
. NEED TO KNOW.
TRAVEL PARTNER.
INDUSTRY TRAVEL FREQUENTLY REVIEWS AND AMENDS OUR TRAVEL
PRIVILEGE PROGRAMS IN ORDER TO PROVIDE OUR PEOPLE WITH
A COMPETITIVE PACKAGE OF TRAVEL PRIVILEGES, COMPARABLE TO
INDUSTRY NORMS AND IN LINE WITH SOCIAL PRACTICES. IN 1994
AIR CANADA JOINED AN INCREASINGLY POPULAR AIRLINE TREND
BY INTRODUCING THE TRAVEL PARTNER VACATION PROGRAM AND A
NUMBER OF ENHANCEMENTS TO THE PROGRAM HAVE BEEN ADOPTED
SINCE THAT TIME. IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR WE EXTENDED PARTNER
TRAVEL PRIVILEGES TO THE STAR ALLIANCE CARRIERS (EXCEPT
THAI) AND THE CONNECTORS, AND AGAIN IN JULY WE ANNOUNCED
SOME ADDITIONAL CHANGES, INCLUDING:
. THE ABILITY TO RECEIVE A PARTIAL SERVICE CHARGE REFUND
IN THE CASE OF ZONAL DOWNGRADES FOR PARTNER TRAVEL.
. THE REMOVAL OF THE ADDITIONAL $50.00 CHARGE FOR PARTNER
TRAVEL ON A COMBINED AC/CONNECTORS ROUTING.
. THE EXTENSION OF EMPLOYEE/RETIREE PERSONAL TRIP PASS
TICKET VALIDITY TO 365 DAYS (OUTBOUND/RETURN)
WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE FURTHER CHANGES TO THE TRAVEL
PARTNER VACATION PROGRAM FOR 1999, WHICH ARE COMPETITIVE -
1. THE ALLOTMENT OF PARTNER PASSES WILL BE INCREASED TO
8 FOR BOTH MARRIED/COMMON-LAW AND SINGLE EMPLOYEES AND
RETIREES. THIS ENHANCEMENT IS CONSISTENT WITH
THE STAR ALLIANCE CARRIER PARTNER PROGRAMS.
WIDOWS/WIDOWERS OF EMPLOYEES/RETIREES, WHO HAVE NOT
REMARRIED, WILL CONTINUE TO RECEIVE AN ALLOTMENT OF
4 PARTNER PASSES PER YEAR.
2. THE NOMINATED PARTNER PROGRAM WILL BE DISCONTINUED,
PRIMARILY BECAUSE OUR ANALYSIS HAS REVEALED THAT A
RELATIVELY SMALL NUMBER OF SINGLE EMPLOYEES/RETIREES
ARE USING THIS PROGRAM. THE ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESS
REQUIRED TO SUPPORT THE NOMINATED PROGRAM IS VERY
LABOUR INTENSIVE AND COSTLY. FURTHERMORE, NONE OF THE
OTHER CARRIERS RECENTLY SURVEYED DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN
PARTNER TYPES (NOMINATED) OR PROVIDE MARRIED AND SINGLE
EMPLOYEES WITH A DIFFERENT NUMBER OF PARTNER PASSES.
3. WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED A NUMBER OF PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH
UNRESTRICTED NUMBERS OF TRAVEL PARTNERS ACCOMPANYING AN
EMPLOYEE/RETIREE ON THE SAME FLIGHT. THEREFORE, WHILE
THE NUMBER OF PARTNERS THAT CAN ACCOMPANY AN EMPLOYEE/
RETIREE ON A TRIP WILL NOT BE RESTRICTED, WE WILL ONLY
ALLOW A MAXIMUM OF 3 PARTNERS PER TRIP TO USE THE
EMPLOYEE,S /RETIREE,S PRIORITY. THIS MEANS THAT
IF AN EMPLOYEE/RETIREE TAKES 5 TRAVEL PARTNERS ON A
TRIP, ONLY 3 CAN USE THE EMPLOYEE,S/RETIREE,S TRAVEL
PRIORITY, THE OTHER 2 WILL TRAVEL AS A PRIORITY
C5/Y10. GIVEN THAT THE NUMBER OF SEATS
AVAILABLE FOR STANDBY TRAVEL ON MANY ROUTES IS
LIMITED, THIS RESTRICTION WILL PERMIT A MORE FAIR
AND EQUITABLE TRAVEL PROGRAM FOR BOTH JUNIOR AND SENIOR
EMPLOYEES AS WELL AS RETIREES. YOU ARE REMINDED
THAT THE STAR ALLIANCE CARRIERS ONLY PERMIT A MAXIMUM
OF 2 PARTNERS ON THEIR SERVICES. IT SHOULD BE NOTED
THAT WHILE AC DOES NOT REQUIRE A PARTNER TO TRAVEL
WITH THE EMPLOYEE/RETIREE, THE MAJORITY OF AIRLINES
SURVEYED REQUIRE THAT THE EMPLOYEE ACCOMPANY THE
PARTNER ON A TRIP (I.E. NO SEPARATE PARTNER TRAVEL
PERMITTED). IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT UNDER
THE TERMS OF THE TRAVEL PARTNER PROGRAM, THE TRAVEL
PARTNER CAN ONLY BE GRANTED THE EMPLOYEE,S/RETIREE,S
TRAVEL PRIORITY IF THE EMPLOYEE/RETIREE IS PRESENT
ON THE SAME FLIGHT.
4. EMPLOYEE TRAVEL CHARGES HAVE BEEN STABLE FOR A
SIGNIFICANT PERIOD OF TIME, HOWEVER, IN AN EFFORT
TO OFFSET RISING COSTS FOR ALL EMPLOYEE PERSONAL TRAVEL,
PARTNER TRAVEL SERVICE CHARGES WILL BE INCREASED TO
THE FOLLOWING AMOUNTS:
ZONE 1 - $60.00 / ZONE 2 - $ 90.00 / ZONE 3 - $150.00
EMPLOYEE/RETIREE SERVICE CHARGES FOR PERSONAL AND PARENT
TRAVEL WILL REMAIN UNCHANGED.
WE WILL ALSO BE STREAMLINING TWO OTHER ASPECTS OF PARTNER
TRAVEL WITH OUR EMPLOYEE/RETIREE TRAVEL POLICY:
. THE PARTNER DRESS CODE WILL BE ALIGNED WITH THE EMPLOYEE
AS FOLLOWS -
DRESS CODE. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT EMPLOYEES, RETIREES AND
TRAVEL PARTNERS WEARING JEANS OR ANY OTHER LESS FORMAL
ATTIRE WILL NOT BE ACCOMMODATED IN EXECUTIVE CLASS IF
ECONOMY CLASS IS FULL. AS A REMINDER, OTHER AIRLINES
MAY NOT ACCEPT CASUAL OR INFORMAL ATTIRE. TO AVOID ANY
INCONVENIENCE PLEASE VERIFY WITH THE AIRLINE DIRECTLY
BEFORE TRAVELLING.
. IN ADDITION, A PARTNER SERVICE CHARGE AND ALLOTMENT
DECREMENT WILL NO LONGER BE APPLIED TO INFANTS TRAVELING
ON THEIR PARENT,S LAP. IF A SEAT IS REQUESTED FOR THE
INFANT, THE NORMAL PARTNER PROCESS WILL APPLY (SERVICE
CHARGE, DECREMENT PARTNER ALLOTMENT).
AS AS REMINDER, THE TRAVEL PARTNER PROGRAM WAS ESTABLISHED
TO PROVIDE EMPLOYEES AND RETIREES WITH A SPECIAL PRIVILEGE,
TO PRIMARILY ALLOW STANDBY TRAVEL FOR CLOSE FRIENDS,
RELATIVES OR SIGNIFICANT OTHERS, FOR THE PURPOSE OF JOINT
OF TRAVEL PRIVILEGES TO THESE PEOPLE, PERMITTED INDIVIDUALS
WITH SPECIAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR STAFF, TO HAVE THE
OPPORTUNITY TO FLY WITH THEM OR VISIT EACH OTHER.
PLEASE KEEP THE ABOVE IN MIND WHEN USING THE TRAVEL PARTNER
PROGRAM.
DURING RECENT MONTHS, WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED A NUMBER OF
INSTANCES OF PASS ABUSE, MAINLY INVOLVING TRAVEL PARTNER
PASSES, WHICH HAVE RESULTED IN SEVERE CONSEQUENCES FOR
THE EMPLOYEES INVOLVED. THESE ABUSES HAVE GENERALLY
INVOLVED UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR OR CONDUCT OF TRAVEL
PARTNERS* OR EVEN MORE SEVERE SITUATIONS INVOLVING THE
USE OF PARTNER PASSES FOR OTHER THAN THEIR INTENDED USE.
THIS HAS INCLUDING BARTERING, SELLING OR EXCHANGING
PARTNER PASSES FOR OTHER SERVICES, OR ALLOWING PASSES TO BE
USED BY PERSONS NOT KNOWN BY THE EMPLOYEE/RETIREE. THESES
INCIDENTS HAVE RESULTED IN THE PERMANENT REMOVAL OF ALL PASS
PRIVILEGES AND, IN MORE THAN ONE INSTANCE, TERMINATION
OF EMPLOYMENT WITH THE COMPANY. AS HAS BEEN STATED
REPEATEDLY IN COMPANY DOCUMENTATION AND HORIZONS,
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE STAFF PERMITTED TO USE
THE PARTNER TRAVEL PROGRAM FOR OTHER THAN THE INTENDED USE.
EMPLOYEES AND RETIREES MUST REMEMBER, THAT IN ANY CASE OF
PASS ABUSE, INCLUDING THE BEHAVIOR OF ALL INDIVIDUALS USING
PASS PRIVILEGES, THE EMPLOYEE OR RETIREE IS ULTIMATELY
RESPONSIBLE.
AS STATED EARLIER, STAR ALLIANCE AIRLINES DO NOT PERMIT
INDEPENDENT PARTNER TRAVEL. WHILE THE PRIVILEGE OF
INDEPENDENT PARTNER TRAVEL WILL CONTINUE TO BE PERMITTED
AT AIR CANADA, WE WILL MONITOR THIS ELEMENT OF THE PROGRAM
ON AN ANNUAL BASIS TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT WE CONTINUE
TO PERMIT INDEPENDENT PARTNER TRAVEL - OR REQUIRE THAT
THE EMPLOYEE ACCOMPANY THE PARTNER ON A TRIP.
THE 1998 PARTNER PROGRAM TERMINATES ON FRIDAY,
DECEMBER 11, 1998 AND EMPLOYEES/RETIREES HAVE UNTIL THAT
DATE TO ORDER THEIR TRAVEL PARTNER ALLOTMENT FOR 1998. FOR
A PERIOD OF TWO DAYS - DECEMBER 12-13 A FREEZE WILL BE
PLACED ON TRAVEL PARTNER REQUESTS IN ORDER TO UPDATE AND
LOAD THE 1999 ALLOTMENT INTO RESIII.
THE 1999 PROGRAM IS EFFECTIVE ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 14 AND
RUNS UNTIL JANUARY 28, 2000. EACH YEAR THEREAFTER, THE
CHANGEOVER DATE WILL BE IN JANUARY. ANY TRAVEL PARTNER
TICKETS ORDERED ON OR AFTER DECEMBER 14, WILL COME OUT OF
THE 1999 ALLOTMENT AND CAN BE USED IMMEDIATELY UPON
RECEIPT. THESE DATES ALSO APPLY TO OTHER EMPLOYEE
TRAVEL PROGRAMS I.E. ID80, PARENTS.
WE HOPE THAT YOU CONTINUE TO ENJOY THE PRIVILEGES OF THE
TRAVEL PARTNER PROGRAM, AND WILL FIND THE CHANGES THAT
HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE PAST AND IN THE FUTURE TO BE OF
OVERALL BENEFIT.

. Need to know!
Don Demeza advises that the Travel Guide produced by the Pionairs has
been further edited by Air Canada Pensions and Employee Benefits - it is
currently being checked again by Industry Travel therefore should soon be
sent to all retirees.
Also Don provides another example concerning the completion of a trip
pass for an unusual trip - here it is:
The retiree is travelling Montreal to Frankfurt on a pass, then another
carrier to Rome and on by cruise ship to Miami and home
to Montreal on Air Canada. The problem is: "How should the pass be
completed to provide Accounting with the information to collect the
various charges involved without requiring the use of two passes. The
return is from a lower zone than Frankfurt so the Frankfurt service
charge applies but Accounting needs the info9rmation.
There are adequate coupons available so complete the pass form as follows:
MONTREAL - FRANKFURT - SURFACE - MIAMI - MONTREAL
The above information provides Accounting with sufficient information
on the audit coupon to set up the required charges and is similar to the
way in which a travel agent would prepare an open jaw type revenue
ticket. This approach can be applied to other situations.
Also Industry Travel have just issued a two page summary of both recent
and 1999 changes to our travel privileges. The highlight is that the
allotment of partner passes will be increased to 8 for married, single
employees and retirees. The summary will be distributed by mail
and Horizons.

This beautiful blond buys a ticket Montreal-Vancouver in economy class.
Once on board, she goes and sits in first class.
A stewardess goes to her and reminds her that she has an economy ticket
"Look at me", she says, "do I look like someone who belongs to economy
class?"
She turns to the flight director and explains her problem. He, in turn,
asks her politely to move to the economey section which is what she paid
for. Again, she refuses. He then reports the problem to the captain.
The latter goes to her, speaks for 10 seconds and she immediately gets up
and moves to the other section.
Intrigued the director and the flight attendant ask the captain : "how did
you manage that?".
I told her that the first class section does not go to Vancouver.

The summary will be distributed by mail
and Horizons.

. George Brien sends us this -
Hi folks,
A short "flash from the past" about TCA when job descriptions didn't
cover all the situations.
The latest story by Bill Norberg reminded me that similar flares were
still kept in stock by local maintenance during the mid fifties.
Many of the smaller airports had basic runway lighting which did not
show up too well during periods of poor visibility such as snow or fog
(radio range letdowns with a minimum of 400 ft ceiling and 1 mile
visibility didnt help much either.)
A box of railway flares were kept on hand and these could be ignited by
breaking off the end somehow, which created a very bright flare.
An inbound DC3 from Boston to Yarmouth was having a difficult time picking
up any runway lighting, so after several approaches request was made for
"flares"
Not sure how I converted from being a Radio Operator to becoming the
"flare operator" but borrowing an airport jeep, off we went to the
end of runway 33 . The flares only lasted about 10-15 mins so when the
Capt reported turning final, off we went lighting and setting a flare
every 100 yards down the right hand side of the runway and quickly got
back to the terminal.
The success rate from the several times that we tried it was poor to
nil but it did give the passengers who were waiting in the terminal
the impression that we were "doing all possible to assist" and I must
admit that the flares were quite impressive as seen from the ground
(too bad they couldn't be seen as well from the air )

. Found on the internet.
A FINAL ROLL:
Former Boeing test pilot A.M. "Tex" Johnston died Thursday
after a four-year bout with Alzheimer's. Johnston is best known as the
pilot who barrel-rolled a Boeing 707 in 1955. He was supposed to simply
do a flyover for a group watching from the shore of Seattle's Lake
Washington, but instead rolled the big bird right on around.
FLYING "HIGH": Ansett Airlines becomes the first to install syringe
disposal bins on flights. Management hopes drug users will use the bins
instead of throwing used needles into the trash where unwary airline
employees could be pricked. Australian government officials aren't as
high on the plan, worrying such a move will actually "promote" drug use.
ISRAEL TO TERMINATE AIR LINK TO CANADA?
Israel has served notice on Canada that it intends to terminate their
bilateral air treaty in twelve months, according to Air Canada.
Notice was served on October 22, and would take effect on
October 22, 1999 if nothing changed by then, said Air Canada
spokesman John Hamilton. In the meantime, both Air Canada and
El Al Israel Airlines will be able to maintain regular service levels.
El Al has several times expressed discontent with the level of
service offered by Air Canada, which has the largest share of the
market despite entering it in 1995 only. Air Canada's arrival has
also pushed fares lower and reduced the El Al share of the lucrative
Israel to US market because passengers find using Air Canada's
Montreal and Toronto gateways more convenient than the El Al
service to New York thanks to shorter connections and routings.
Air Canada usually flies a Boeing 767-300 aircraft to Tel Aviv on
non-stop flights, but El Al uses heavier 747s with twice the
capacity and has to pair cities in North America in order to fill its
seats. El Al is also disadvantaged by being prevented from flying
on the Jewish Sabbath, making Air Canada's service more popular
with business travellers.
NUTS!
The US Congress has defeated an attempt sponsored by President
Bill Clinton to force airlines to set aside three rows where peanuts
will not be served upon request by a passenger with a medically
documented allergy to peanuts. Had the legislation
been approved, it would have opened the floodgates to hundreds of
other products being banned from aeroplanes, with airlines ending
up serving bland food to passengers all dressed in non-allergic
clothing.
Air Canada has developed a PC-based personal ticket office for frequent
flyer club members. Floppy disks containing the software is being made
available. The airline is also testing Canada's first self-service airport
check-in kiosks.
Air Canada employee Brynley Evans, from Technical Operations, has invented
a device that has simplified aircraft cold weather handling, and is now being
tested in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Edmonton. Aircraft freeze-ups are common
on his station in Edmonton.
