We now have a total of _112_subscribers. The Newsletter was the brainchild of Vesta, who gave the name 'NETLETTER' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a periodical which you probably remember from the 50's and 60's. The 'Between Ourselves - NetLetter" contains airline related information, anecdotes and stories supplied by our recipients, gathered off the Internet, travel news, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, keeps our "TCA/Air Canada" family together and in touch. "Between Ourselves - NetLetter" is Free to TCA/AC retirees and we are not sponsored by the Pionairs, although closely related. We encourage mail forwarding by relatives of retirees who have Internet addresses. Terry and I are open to any suggestions and ideas you may have, or would like to read in "Between Ourselves - NetLetter" ~-=o0o=-~ . Just over a month 'till the Annual General Meeting - are you ready? June 01-04 1997 at the Radisson Hotel in Montreal, Quebec. Vesta sends us a little history about the name of the hotel where the 1997 AGM will take place, in Montreal. Radisson, Pierre Esprit c.1632-1710, French explorer and fur trader in North America. He arrived in Canada in 1651. His journals, first published as the Voyages of Peter Esprit Radisson (1885), are confusing documents, often leaving great doubt as to the location of places and the time of events. The first journal tells of his capture (1652-53) by the Iroquois. Another asserts that he made (1655-56) a trip to the West with his brother-in-law, Médard Chouart, sieur des Groseilliers, his companion on the later trips; it is probable, however, that only Groseilliers undertook the journey mentioned in this journal. On the second trip (1659-60) the two men entered Lake Superior and went as far west as the Sioux villages near Isanti Lake, the first white men to enter the region that is now Minnesota. They returned with an immense cargo of furs, which were confiscated at Montreal because they had traded without a license. This episode led Radisson and Groseilliers to transfer their allegiance to the English, and, backed by Prince Rupert, they set sail in 1668 for Hudson Bay. Radisson's ship was turned back but Groseillers's continued, and he established Fort Charles at the mouth of Rupert River in James Bay. He returned to England with furs, and in 1670 both men were back at Hudson Bay, Radisson establishing Port Nelson on the Nelson River. It was thus largely because of their efforts and Radisson's stories of the wealth of the north in furs that the Hudson's Bay Company was formed. Later Radisson returned to the French and led a plundering expedition against the English forts on Hudson Bay. He finally (1684) joined the English again and after a long lawsuit was pensioned by the Hudson's Bay Company in his old age. ~-=o0o=-~ . AIRBUS TO LAUNCH A340-600 AND COMPETE WITH BOEING'S B747-400 Airbus Industrie hopes to officially launch its two new versions of its long range A340 plane by the Paris Le Bourget Air Show (June 15-22). The A340-600, a stretched derivative of the -300 version, is aimed at competing with Boeing's successful B747-400 aircraft with seating accommodating up to 382 passengers. The -500 ultra long range version to be launched at the same time will seat fewer passengers on a distance of 15360 Km (9600 miles). Design work is already completed for both airlines and the launch now hinges on the European manufacturer finding an engine and a sufficient customer base. SMART CARD TO ALLOW PAPERLESS TRAVEL, ELIMINATING EVEN BOARDING PASSES The study drew on the results of 3 airlines who already have introduced at their own level and with their own limitations such a system. Delta Airlines has issued its frequent travellers on its Shuttle flights between New York and Boston or Washington with an electronic chip card which is being used as a ticket, boarding pass, credit card and frequent flyer card. Lufthansa's ChipCard is to be used on domestic flights and flights from London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaule. Air France has issued its own version of the smart card to a few select frequent flyers on its largest domestic routes. New smart cards will also be compatible with the Europay/MasterCard/Visa Smart Card standard, allowing them to be co-branded with credit card companies. In addtion, space on the card has been set aside for immigration data should a country be willing to use the card to speed up border controls. LAPTOPS ON BOARD AIRCRAFT - AN UPDATE Canadi>n Airlines is the first airline in the world to have such a plug equipped on an entire fleet type since November 1996. Canadi>n's 12 B767-300s are equipped with a cigarette style outlet in which passengers can fit a MicroBolt DC Aircraft Power Adapter available from flight attendants, according to Canadi>n Airlines Product Coordinator Stephen Knowles. He adds that, starting this summer, Empress Class (Canadi>n's business class) passengers will also be able to use a power outlet for the Sony Video Walkman instead of relying on a battery pack, as it is the case currently. ~-=o0o=-~ . Smiles - Lawson Tremellen sends us this one - A helicopter was flying around above Seattle yesterday when an electrical malfunction disabled all of the helicopters electronic navigation and communications equipment. Due to the clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter's position and course to steer to the airport. The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, drew a handwritten sign, and held it in the helicopter's window. The pilot's sign said "WHERE AM I?" in large letters. People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER." The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to SEATAC airport, and landed safely. After they were on the ground, the copilot asked the pilot how the "YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER" sign helped determine their position. The pilot responded, "I knew that had to be the MICROSOFT building because, similar to their help-lines, they gave me a technically correct but completely useless answer.". ~-=o0o=-~ . My father was a Chief Customs Officer at Heathrow, London England, in fact the very first Customs officer after WWII when Heathrow was made 'commercial'. The subject of the call was 'One of your DC8's aborted within the last few minutes and crashed through the end of the runway - no injuries but I thought you would like to know before you see it on the 9 o'clock news'. Naturally I was stunned - our airline having such an incident. Well, that incident was the start of what you may call a career change - almost right angles for me. I was the Office Supervisor in the Purchases and Stores office under Tom Carr Hodgson. The next day, the whole office was atop the Queens building looking for the crash site which was at the end of the runway which paralleled the Bath Road and, in fact, ended up in a field of cabbages, hence the name 'Cabbage Patch'. Several days later, from our perch ontop of the Queens building, we watched as the damaged aircraft was dragged, supported by large airbags, down the runway to the B.O.A.C. Maintenance complex and into one of their hangers. The B.O.A.C. Maintenance complex was one huge building with 4 bays separated by workshops and could house several Britannia and Comet aircraft at one time. Trans-Canada Airlines - in those days - was obliged to insure the complete complex together with several aircraft and issue a 'hold harmless' clause to B.O.A.C. for the period of time that our DC8 was being repaired. A team of approximately 50 mechanics was flown in from the Douglas plant headed by John Cook, known as 'Big John'. Danny Sweetman and Ted Rogers from Dorval were seconded to London for a period. My role was to arrange for shelving to completely surround the DC8, on which the mechanics would place the various units removed from the aircraft. Those units declared unserviceable would be recorded and reordered from Dorval, while the unserviceable unit was shipped back to Dorval by Wally Evans and Ted Dean. All the time accurate records of the movements had to be kept as the area was declared a customs bonded zone to avoid duties on the various units. One highlight was the arrival of the under belly and wing panels in a huge C5 Galaxy aircraft which was manouvered around the various maintenance hangers, guided by a navigator who had his head out through the top of the aircraft, similar to a tank commander. This aircraft was huge. The day finally arrived when the aircraft did its test flights successfully and returned to service. Eventually, fin 813 was lost at Ottawa during a training flight in May 1967. As a result of this episode of my career, I was invited to move, on a company transfer, to Dorval, arriving on January 2nd 1965. ~-=o0o=-~ . Interline stuff From Carol Ann McDevitt My Dad is an Air Canada retiree, orginally based in Dorval but now living in Toronto. He doesn't have internet access, but has asked me to try to find out something for him. My Mum and Dad are planning a trip to Hong Kong in May. The hotel prices are very high, and they are trying to find out if any of them give a decent airline rate for retirees. I tracked down all of the leads and couldn't find any such list (like the booklet we used to get with all of the hotels where we got discounts). Do you know where I can find this information? You can email Carol at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. (We would be interested in any replies too - eds) Alan Rust has responded - My wife and I tried to find reasonable rooms as well in October 96 with no luck. We faxed many hotels and searched the WWW for deals. They seem to be able to get away with the high prices due to the fact that there are a lot of business people in for conventions, etc all the time. Also since the change over is July 1/97 I think a lot of business deals are being made. We even tried the YMCA and it was booked solid. I think you can show up and take a chance though. Some of the cheap hotels are supposed to be dives that you really wouldn't want your parents to stay in. I hear that if you book out of town it's cheaper. We ended up going to Hawaii instead. If your parents have never been to the "Big Island" of Hawaii, it's facinating to see the volcano and I'm sure they would enjoy it. Good luck - Alan Rust. ~-=o0o=-~ . Smilies - SHORT FINAL... We're not sure if this actually happened, but we thought we'd share it anyway... According to Reuters, the dazed crew of a Japanese trawler was plucked out of the Sea of Japan earlier this year clinging to the wreckage of their sunken ship. Their rescue was followed by immediate imprisonment once authorities questioned the sailors on their ship's loss. To a man they claimed that a cow, falling out of a clear blue sky, had struck the trawler amidships, shattering its hull and sinking the vessel within minutes. They remained in prison for several weeks, until the Russian Air Force reluctantly informed Japanese authorities that the crew of one of its cargo planes had apparently stolen a cow wandering at the edge of a Siberian airfield, forced the cow into the plane's hold and hastily taken off for home. Unprepared for live cargo, the Russian crew was ill-equipped to manage a frightened cow rampaging within the hold. To save the aircraft and themselves, they shoved the animal out of the cargo hold as they crossed the Sea of Japan at an altitude of 30,000 feet. Phil Pawsey sends us this information - The latest Canadian Amateur Radio magazine contained an article, which I have condensed which some may find interesting. The 11 crew and 14 passengers, including three children of the 250-tonne Cook Islands ferry MV Avatapu were adrift in three life rafts and an aluminum dinghy for more than 30 hours after being forced to abandon ship on Sat. night Feb. 22. A raging engine fire north of Palmerston Atoll in the Cooks Islands caused the emergency. Quantas Flt. 101 enroute from Auckland to Hawaii was notified and they picked up the ship's emergency beacon. The flight descended and located the burning vessel and the life rafts. The survivors shone a flashlight at the jet and using morse code got the message through that they were safe. I find that quite remarkable because even with an Aldis Lamp, I think that would have been difficult. Anyway by using the wingtip lights the pilots were able to signal that they would receive HELP IN 1 DAY- this is also very remarkable. Two RNZAF Orion aircraft and two container ships were diverted to the scene with the Orions dropping a radio and medical supplies. The survivors were rescued on Feb.24, 30 hrs after abandoning ship-no reports of injuries. Apart from Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich and Stuttgart are on the agenda. To obtain the timetable, mail a postcard to Lufthansa Stiftung, P.O. Box 630300, 22313 Hamburg, or fax to 49-[0]40-5070-5061. LUFTHANSA'S CITYLINE GOES ALL JET: Lufthansa Cityline, once the world's largest operator of Fokker 50 turboprops, last week bid farewell to the last of them. The Fokker 50 has been gradually replaced by the new 50-seat Canadair Regional Jet. COMAIR dedicated a Canadair RJ to employees as its 20th Anniversary Jet. April Fool fever seems to be running rampant this week. Our spies in the field turned up this (unverified) memo: "There appears to be some confusion over the new pilot role titles. This notice will hopefully clear up any misunderstandings. "The titles P1, P2 and Co-Pilot will now cease to have any meaning, within the BA operations manuals. They are to be replaced by Handling Pilot, Non-Handling Pilot, Handling Landing Pilot, Non-Handling Landing Pilot, Handling Non-Landing Pilot, and Non-Handling Non-Landing Pilot. "The Landing Pilot is initially the Handling Pilot and will handle the take-off and landing, except in role reversal when he is the Non- Handling Pilot for taxi, until the Handling Non-Landing Pilot hands the Handling to the Landing Pilot at eighty knots. "The Non-Landing (Non-Handling, since the Landing Pilot is handling) Pilot reads the checklist to the Handling Pilot until after the Before Descent Checklist completion, when the Handling Landing Pilot hands the handling to the Non-Handling Non-Landing Pilot who then becomes the Handling Non-Landing Pilot. "The Landing Pilot is the Non-Handling Pilot until the "decision altitude" call, when the Handling Non-Landing Pilot hands the handling to the Non-Handling Landing Pilot, unless the latter calls "go-around", in which case the Handling Non-Landing Pilot, continues handling and the Non-Handling Landing Pilot continues non-handling until the next call of "land" or "go-around", as appropriate. "In view of the recent confusion over these rules, it was deemed necessary to restate them clearly." ~-=o0o=-~ . Interline stuff Interline Emergency Half Price Sale! Smilie from Alan Rust - What if Microsoft Started Making Cars ***************** 1. a particular model year of car wouldn't be available until after that model year instead of before it. 2. every time they repainted the lines on the road, you'd have to buy a new car. 3. occasionally your car would just die for no reason, and you'd have to restart it. For some strange reason, you'd just accept this. 4. You could only have one person in the car at a time, unless you bought a Car 95 or Car NT. But then you'd have to buy more seats. 5. Sun Motorsystems would make a car that was powered by the sun, twice as reliable, and five times as fast-but it would only run on 5 percent of the roads. 6. The oil, engine, gas, and alternator warning lights would be replaced with a single "general car fault" warning light. 7. people would get excited about the "new" features in Microsoft cars, forgetting completely that they had been available in other cars for years. 8. We'd all have to switch to microsoft gas. 9. New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt. Shirley Jay, who we welcomed recently, sent us her bio - I joined Trans Canada Airlines in Moncton, N.B. on April 14, 1952, working in the Teletype Relay Centre and when that moved to Montreal, I moved into Sales, first in Reservations, then at the Airport Counter. In January of 1957 I transferred to Edmonton Airport where I mostly worked until retirement Dec 31/1982. Did do some part time training both with AC and Grant McEwan Community College (the travel course). After retirement I opened my own Pet Care business where I looked after pets and homes when people travelled. Did that for 10 years. In the meantime am doing the books for a small company (hence the computer) which I do out of my home. Any of Shirleys' friends can email her: This email address is being protected from spambots. Although no one, male or female, had ever completed this journey, Earhart's goal was to be the first pilot ever to circumnavigate the globe at it longest point -- the equator. Sixty years later, on March 17, 1997, pilot Linda Finch embarks on her adventure of a lifetime when she takes off from Oakland, CA, to re-create and complete Earhart's heroic expedition. Finch's journey, called World Flight 1997, is not out to set any records. Rather, it is a tribute to Earhart's vision and spirit, and the sharing of a message that is as timeless today as it was sixty years ago. John Doney adds this information - The home page for this event is http://worldflight.org/ The home page is laid out like an aircraft instrument panel. FULL EUROPEAN DEREGULATION FINALLY COMPLETE Since April 1, the European airline industry is finally fully deregulated, the completion of a step-by-step process begun 10 years ago. The first step occurred in 1987 when the European council of ministers decided to simplify and reform rate structures, market division between national airlines and market access for new entrants. The most important step came in 1993 when prices, market access and capacities were fully deregulated. The immediate consequence was the arrival of new carriers competing against established national airlines on the most profitable routes. Any airline could operate between its home country and another country member of the European Union freely. Then came the sixth freedom, the right to pick up passengers in a member country and carry them to another member country, the airline being based in neither country. Since 1987, 83 new airlines have entered the market and 68 ceased operations, and the number of routes grew from 490 to 520, fuelling competitions between airlines. LOW COST OVER THE ATLANTIC Belgian based CityBird is the first airline to do for trans- atlantic passengers what low cost no frills airlines have done to passengers in the US and Europe. With unrestricted one-way fares starting at US$139, including taxes, between Brussels and New York, CityBird hopes to attract people who would otherwise not fly on its planes. CityBird will start flights to New York, Los Angeles and San Fransisco on June 2nd with MD-11 aircraft. BRITISH MIDLAND ORDERS 20 AIRBUSES The UK's third largest airline, British Midland, has signed a memorandum of understanding to order eight Airbus A321 planes seating 196 passengers and 12 A320s which seat 160 in a deal valued at more than US$1 billion. The order is the largest ever received from a British operator. Since September 1991, all 53 international B747 and B767 operated by Australian airline Qantas are equipped with defibrillators to restore heart rhythm for people suffering a cardiac arrest in mid-air. WORLD'S BUSIEST AIRPORTS RANKED Top 5 : 1. Chicago O'Hare - 69 million pass. 2. Atlanta Hartsfield International - 63 million pass. 3. Los Angeles International - 57.9 million pass. 4. London Heathrow International - 56 million pass. 5. Dallas-Fort Worth International - 55 million pass. ~-=o0o=-~ . Interline stuff The printed Time Table for Air canada will be available Jun 1st. Smilies - Best one I read was about a Saudia B737 ready for a domestic flight. Frantic banging was heard on the outside of the fuselage as the plane was ready to push back. The flight attendants finally opened the door to be greeted by the first officer who had been doing his walk around and wanted to get back to the right hand seat. CAPTAIN (on PA explaining a delay): "Sorry, folks, but our landing been delayed by a mechanical failure. The automatic machine that beats up and loses your luggage is not functioning properly and we'll have to wait for repairs." Controller on position asks for relief so he can go to the bathroom. New controller comes over and plugs in but fails to get *COMPLETELY* plugged in. At the time, this caused both (reliever and relievee) mikes to go "hot". Controller on position proceeds to give a quick rundown: " These 2 are going to Phoenix, speeds look good. The American should fit behind that Southwest, everything else is working, rides are good, no weather and if I don't go now, I'm gonna WET my pants!" He leaves, new guy sits down, notices hot mike and fixes plug. First transmission he hears: " I hope your friend makes it". ~-=o0o=-~ .
