. Cory McAdams sends us an update about Diane Moser-Elliot,
editor of Horizons -
I was over to visit Diane last week and saw her beautiful
daughter, Jennifer Susan. Lots of black hair and a little face
that looks wise beyond her days!
Mother, father and baby are all doing splendidly - I'm sure Diane
is already wondering how she will ever be able to pull herself
away in the spring of '98 when the time comes to go back to work.

. Steve Charlton, who we welcomed in Netletter nr 165, sends us this
bio -
Am currently working at Dorval, as I have for 23 years, so am
keeping your pension healthy, so to speak. Worked in the IT
branch for many years, on all 3 of Honeywell/Bull, Unisys, & IBM,
plus PC's. At re-org 4 years ago, I.T. was distributed out to
customer premises, and I accepted a management job in Tech Ops.
After outsourcing, continued to interface with I.T., and coming
from technical background am one of the few customers who can
talk 'IT talk' on their terms and keep them honest.
In many cases, TechOps is pushing the corporate direction to
new frontiers: we will be the first branch to bring in an
object-oriented database, and a prototype system ("IDS") is
entirely a network of distributed clients, each running NT with
it own copy of the database. If any component fails, it chats
with its neighbour and gets put back into order, sort of like
the Internet - there's no "boss" computer like in the mainframe
days. Have rolled out CD-ROM's with electronic maintenance
manuals on them, and we'll be editing and authoring our own
manuals electronically, and pressing our own CD's with AMM, IPC,
etc, within the year. Enough techie talk - suffice it to say that
things are still hopping, that although customers always want
more, faster, than IT can produce, we here in TechOps are making
a difference! (as proved by the stock prices).

. British Air Undergoes Makeover To Shed 'Stiff-Upper-Lip' Image
Often viewed as "cold" and "arrogant," British Airways unveiled
a 60 million pounds (US$98.3 million) makeover that includes a
new logo, brighter colors and a warmer, fuzzier feel.
As part of British Airways design makeover, tails
of the carrier's 308-plane fleet are being painted with more
than 50 colorful "world images" inspired, for example, by
mythology of the Ncoakhoe tribe of the Kalahari Desert and
Delft pottery from the Netherlands. The logo has been
changed to a rounded symbol now known as a "speedmarque,"
compared with the previous arrow-like "speedwing." The name
is printed in same-size capital letters with a softer,
rounder typeface, doing away with the larger "B" and "A" in
"British Airways" that have graced the planes since the
airline's last major makeover in 1984. Basic colors remain
red, white and blue, with brighter hues.
The campaign, which followed two years of market
research, will be phased in over three years as part of an
overall six billion investment in new aircraft, facilities
and training.
(Joe Mallory sent us the above information. Thanks Joe - eds)

Continental Airlines Inc's announcement that it will turn to
Boeing for all its new jets during the next 20 years comes as a
sting rebuke to European officials who have assailed such pacts.

deliverd through 2004 and valued at US$3 billion . . .
AMR announced that it will buy seven 777 @ $1 billion as part of

STOL JUMBO? STRIPPED SAUDIA 747 FLOWN AFTER 4,000' ROLL
So long, yet so short. Friday a Turkish pilot launched a stripped
Saudia 747 from India's Tambaram air base in Madras. The pilot used
his best short-field technique and took under 4,000 feet fly the
lightened jumbo and ferry it a few miles to Meenambakkam
International, where it should have been in the first place.
FORE! BOEING BIZJETS SCORE WITH GOLFER GREG NORMAN:
Successful as they want to be, the small staff of Boeing Business
Jets last week putted its backlog to 18 after PGA champ Greg Norman
ordered one of the $30.5 million luxury hybrids of the 737-700
and -800.
EL AL DELAYS FLIGHT FOR RODENT REMOVAL:
The world's greatest security service may have finally met its match
-- unless it recruits a cat. El Al reportedly delayed a flight
from Ben Gurion International to JFK last week after a mouse
reportedly was seen on the plane. No rodent was found.
The risk: chewed-up wiring.

A friend of mine, who has a quick wit, owns a Cherokee 180.
One day he was told by the tower to hold short of the runway in a
taxiway while a DC-8 landed. The DC-8 landed, rolled out, performed
a 180 and taxied back past my friend.
One of the DC-8 crew said, "What a cute little plane, did you make
it yourself?" My friend replied, "I made it out of DC-8 parts.
Another landing like that and I'll have parts enough for another
one."

. With reference to the 60th anniversary "family days".
Cory McAdam sends us this information -
Pionairs/retirees are an active part of the planning process and
have reps helping out on almost all locations' planning committees.
Some committees are just getting started, especially for those
locations whose dates are in late August, Sept and Oct, and retirees
will be hearing more about the events close to them through the
netletter to communicate other dates as they are known. So far, we
have also received dates for Newark (July 12 at Liberty Island Park)
and Los Angeles (September 29). Horizons will carry as many dates as
are known at the time it goes to press each month and we are hopeful
that our Pionairs network will also help spread the word.
The exhibit of memorabilia will travel to as many stations as
possible, where dates do not conflict and we can physically
transport it (it will travel largely by truck). To quote Mr. Durrett
in a recent letter to his immediate deputies: "I believe that by
bringing together employees, family members and retirees at their
respective locations, we will create a true feeling of unity and
celebration of our airline's diamond jubilee".
That's all for now, but I'll keep you posted!
Many thanks Cory McAdam (

. Tom Martin sends us some information about London's Heathrow LHR.
Courtesy of my favourite industry magazine - AIRWAYS - this is a
bit more information about Heathrow to add to Terry's piece about
its 50th anniversary. More than 54 million passengers flew through
the airport last year - equal to the entire population of Britain or
France. More than 90 airlines use LHR with 1200 aircraft
movements daily and a landing and takeoff every 90 seconds during
peak periods. The proposed solution to this overload is a new
terminal designated T5 which would take Heathrow's passenger
capacity up to 80 million a year. The proponents claim there is no
alternative but to build T5 and that while it would increase
passenger capacity by about 48% it would only increase flights
by 8%. Public hearings end in 1997 and if approval is received by
late 1998, T5 should be completed in 2003 at a cost of about 1
billion pounds. BA, Heathrow's biggest operator has asked for
exclusive use of T5 so they can consolidate their existing
operations out of T1 and T4. Finally, a new 350 million pound
express rail service to Paddington is due to open in June 1998 and
will take 16 minutes to get passengers to town rather than the 50
minutes it now takes via Underground. 80 million passengers a year -
hard to even imagine!

The 42nd edition of the Paris Air Show, started Sunday June 15th
will be a tame one.
No revolutionary new aircraft is expected to be launched this year.
European manufacturer Airbus Industries will be launching both a
long range and a very long range version of its A340 aircraft, the
A340-600 and A340-500 respectively. Competitor Boeing will also
launch a very long range B777 derivative, the B777-200X.
No large aircraft order is expected either, except for a 67 aircraft
strong one from American Eagles. The American Airlines regional
subsidiary will make public during the show its choice of
manufacturer for its first jet aircraft. Contenders are Canadair
with its RJ and Embraer with its EMB-145.

After over a year of pussyfooting around, Dutch authorities finally
jailed pilot Wim de Nijs to a mere four months in the slammer for
tying up the radio frequency used by air traffic controllers in
Groningen. Apparently, De Nijs drowned out the controllers with a
twenty minute serenade consisting of the Flintstones theme song
sung over and over again. Geez, you'd think a modern stone-age
airport would have a second frequency for backup. One begins to
wonder how much longer they can keep the Cessnas out of the flight
paths of the KLM jets. Four months in jail hardly seems a
deterrent, especially when in one of those plush Dutch jails.

AIR FRANCE PRIVATIZATION IN DOUBTS
French national airline Air France will probably not be privatized

Insiders fear the new government will also order the French airline

ranging from baggage handlers to catering staff and check-in agents,
says the result of the ballot will be announced on June 30 with

airline is becoming a "virtual airline", selling services operated

Of interest to aviation buffs within driving distance of Belleville.
The Bay of Quinte Aeromodellers Radio Control Club are holding
their 11th annual model aircraft Jet Rally next week-end at
Mountainview Airport 10 km south of Belleville on Hwy #62 beginning
at 9.00 a.m. on June 14-15. About 50 scale jets from the U.S. and
Canada fly at this event. Also featured are large scale "Warbirds"
and this year a 20 ft scale model of a Halifax will fly at 1.00 p.m.
on the Saturday. Several members of the Canadian Jet Team are
expected to fly model jets with real turbine engines - such engines
cost about $5000.00, turn at 200,000 rpm and use propane fuel.
The RCAF museum at Trenton is also worth a visit - it's becoming
better every year. They are rebuilding a Halifax from a Norwegian
fiord and the cockpit will be on display at the model aircraft
Jet Rally. Don Demeza is an active member of the club and can

PINT-SIZE PAX POACHES PASSAGE II:
We recently ran an item about an Atlanta-area boy who successfully
sneaked onto a LAX-bound Delta flight, only to be discovered en
route and returned home on the next available flight. Now comes
this tale of another boy, dressed in a T-shirt and cut-off jeans,
who walked through Miami airport security, boarded an American
Airlines plane and flew first-class to Jamaica. The 12-year-old
had no ticket, no money, no passport and, presumably, no frequent
flyer miles. He wasn't found out until arrival when he tried to
get to his intended destination, an exclusive resort for couples.
American Airlines flew him back to Miami, but probably not in first.
Amused by the boy's interest, the resort said it would hire him
next summer as part of an internship for youths if his grades are
good. Makes us wonder if we really need that ticket to
Tahiti after all.

TRAVEL TIP
When travelling as a couple on an aircraft where seating includes
a group of 3 seats together (such as on a B747, a B737 or an A340),
try and ask to be assigned the two external seats of a group of 3
seats. Middle seats are the least preferred by all flyers and are
assigned last. If a plane is not full, it is likely the middle seat
will remain unoccupied. If it is occupied, the passenger will
usually be very happy to swap his/her seat for one of the external
seat.

The beguiling ideas about science quoted here were supposedly
gleaned from essays, exams, and classroom discussions. Most were
from 5th and 6th graders. Some seem to apply to the art of flight.
- The law of gravity says no fair jumping up without coming back down.
- Clouds are high flying fogs.
- I am not sure how clouds get formed. But the clouds know how to do
it, and that is the important thing.
- Water vapor gets together in a cloud. When it is big enough to be
called a drop, it does.
- Humidity is the experience of looking for air and finding water.
- Rain is often known as soft water, oppositely known as hail.
- Rain is saved up in cloud banks.
- A blizzard is when it snows sideways.
- A hurricane is a breeze of a bigly size.
- Isotherms and isobars are even more important than their names
sound.
And our favorite...
- Rainbows are just to look at, not to really understand.

Hi Terry/Vesta.
Response to your survey is that you guys are doing a great job!!!
(in writing too! - eds)
I have picked up info as well as E-Mail addresses for people that
we lose touch with even when we were working. For example one
person introduced was Don Dowie. He and I were friends at TMR high
school and met up again at Air Canada. He worked for IBM at the
time then joined Air Canada C&SS. Left AC, went to YYZ then onward
and we lost touch. Twenty years later he appears as an address in
your news letter and now we've been in touch by E-Mail and phone
since then.

(Thanks for the response Bob - that's what it is all about! - eds)

. Remember those Vickers Vanguards of ours? Here's some more after
Netletter nr 155 -
One of the few UK airlines to successfully employ some of these
aircraft was Invicta International based at Manston, Kent, UK.
The company used its Vanguards both for freight and passenger work.
Passengers were not particularly impressed by the appearance of
these aircraft, especially as little had been done to disguise
its Canadian connection. The cabin interior still displayed the
gold maple leaf designs, and the exit signs were still duplicated
in French - 20 years ahead of their time for European operations.
CF-TKE (905) sold to Merpati Nusantara Airlines as PK-MVW in 1972,
sold to Air Holdings as G-BAMX in 1972 sent to Southend Jun 6, 1972
for spares and later broken up in 1974.
CF-TKF (906) sold to Air Holdings in 1972 leased to Invicta
International Airlines as G-AZRE, then sold to Europe Aero Service
as F-BXOF at Perpignan Sept 11, 1975 as spares.
CF-TKG (907) had a checkered career.
Sold to Air Holdings in 1969, converted to freighter, leased Air
Trader as SE-FTH, then Silver City in 1973 as G-AYLD. Sold to
Europe Aero Service in 1973 and registered as F-BUFF, then to
Aerospatiale, leased by Air Gabon as TR-LBA in 1983, sold off to
Inter Cargo Services as F-GEJE, finally crashed at Marseilles
Feb 6th 1989.
CF-TKH Sold to Europe Aero Service in 1972 as F-BTOU. Last flight
Nov 27/75 and broken up at Perpingnan, France.
CF-TKI Sold to Air Holdings in 1972 and stored at Cambridge, UK
and used for static testing then broken up and shipped as
spares to Southend UK May 72.
CF-TKJ Sold to Air Holdings 1969 as G-AX)), leased to Angkasa
Indonesia Civil Air Transport as PK-ICC in 1970 then onto
Invicta International in 1971. Eventually stored at Manston, UK
in May 1973 and broken up in 1977.
More next time!

New-look Qatar Airways offers improved service
Travel agents and media representatives were introduced to the
new-look Qatar Airways recently aboard the airline's new Airbus
A300-600R and fully refurbished Boeing 727's.
The three-year old airline, now under a new management, has
changed its livery, uniforms, routings, frequencies, in-flight
services, reservation proceedings, and even the paperwork in a
massive upgrading exercise that it hopes will put it on a par
with premium carriers.
EMIRATES TAKES ON ASIAN AIRLINES
Emirates, the international airline of the United Arab Emirates,
will push its ambition to be the No 1 carrier in Asia by equipping
its next generation Boeing 777 aircraft with the latest in
multimedia wizardry.
Passengers in all classes will be able to send faxes from their
seats, shop in the air, play interactive video games or watch the
latest movies on personal screens.
