. Irv Christjanson straightens us out ...
Alan Rust reported in NewtLetter nr 197 on Air Aanada's new web
site..and what an improvement, eh!
Tell Alan and all others that the sched is still downloadable ...
just click on "Schedules" on the right hand side (white) under
the red AIR CANADA heading and this will lead how to download
Regards, Irv Christjanson
(Latest version is Sept 16th 1997 thru Apr 4th 1998 at 362k - eds)
John Dahlgren tries to straighten us out some more !
Hi, After noting Alan Rust's comments in Netletter #197 about
the revamped Air Canada Website. I checked into it and found it
to be very interesting.
Especially the Virtual Flight take off, cockpit view, in a 767.
(Needs" ibmpix.exe" Plug in program which is available at Website
Alphaworks.ibm.com )
The complete Flt. Schedule. Latest as of Sept 16, is still
available. Although not as easy to find as before. Suggest try -
Go to AirCanada website. Click Language Preference.
Click Schedules. Click on the Schedules Icon.
Then on the line "Access our timetable or download your own
PC TIMETABLE" Put the arrow on "PCTIMETABLE" until the arrow
changes to the "Hand" symbol Click. It - That started the
download for me.
It certainly is easier to do than to try to describe how to do it.
Anyhow I hope this is a help. Any comments are welcome.
Jack

Most new airlines are started by enthusiastic aviation
believers, but there are exceptions. Teng Bunma, one of the
richest men in Cambodia, is starting his own airline, just a
month after he shot out the tires of a commercial aircraft
after his luggage was lost.
DOT - Orally authorized Continental Express to provide
scheduled combination service beginning Nov 1. between

which suspended the service Sept 3.

CESSNAS INTERRUPTUS, DOWNUNDER
Imagine the anticipation. Your company's first three new C-172Rs
have just arrived by boat in Australia, containered for shipment.
You can barely contain yourself as you open the shipping container
-- only to find the disassembled birds were damaged during shipment.
All three were in bad shape -- wrinkled wings, crushed fuselages,
broken windshields and other "loose" damage. Cessna says they
did not pack the planes for shipment, farming that task out to a
firm in Mississippi.
THAT DIRTY RAT -- RELIEVED RODENT SHUTS BARRANQUILLA
Talk about PO'd. Folks at Barranquilla, Colombia were more than
a little, well, "upset" Friday after a rat of no known political
persuasion peed on a high-powered electrical cable and
short-circuited airport communications. Officials shut down the
airport for the 40 minutes it took to restore radio service.
Mr. Rat was described as "quite frazzled."
ILFC POPS FOR 61 NEW BOEINGS, 40 NEW AIRBUSES
International Lease Finance Corp. went on a buying spree last week.
Boeing got orders for 61 planes, while Airbus, for whom ILFC is
their biggest customer, got an order for 50 aircraft. Aircraft
types covered the entire range produced by the two fierce
competitors.
TWA retired its last L-1011s last week after 25 years flying
TriStars...
The 1st of over 160 MD-11 aircraft in service to be destroyed when
N611FE or Fedex bounced and flipped on its back after touchdown
at Newark recently. Both pilots and the 3 passengers escaped
injury.

To Operate B747SP ? A new British company is looking to operate an
executive-configured B747-SP from a base in Dubai. According to
reports, the airline has entered into negotiations with UNITED and
other B747-SP operators for the purchase or lease of a single
aircraft. The aircraft will be upgraded to Royal Flight standards
with amenities to include conference room, lounges, bars, a cinema
and a library. Chess Intl will offer the B747-SP for charter flights
or leasing arrangements from November 1997.
The operation is aimed at business in the US and Japan. Lease rates
for the aircraft will be in the region of US$ 15,000 to US$ 20,000
per hour.
Senior officials from Dubai, which the airline sees as the ideal
location for it's operation, have reportedly been approached with
the concept and their interest and enthusiasm was said to be
encouraging.
Cheers, Tom

. News from the districts -
Bob Robbins sends us a write up on the 60th anniversary at Ottawa -
The 60th Birthday Party in Ottawa as a great success.
The weather soured during the night, with rain for a while about
0800, but cleared from then. However, I think that rain, and
possibly Princess Di's funeral caused us to lose a number of people.
I estimate we were over 300 all told. Lots of kids of all ages,
plus teen-agers, and adults from "young" to "senior".
About 35 Pionairs, including spouses, children and grand-children.
The National Aviation Museum proved to be a wonderful site,
with splendid cooperation from staff. There was nonstop action in
a large picnicking area beside the Museum. The day's objective, to
have a great family picnic, was achieved in spades. Many races
(potato sack, three-legged, etc.), competitions and other hilarious
events involving all ages. Lots of small prizes. And of course
hundreds of hamburgs, hot dogs, containers of popcorn and soft
drinks. One very popular event with the kids was a sing-along
conducted and accompanied on the guitar by a girl from the airport
( but who had to cut it short to get back to work).
There also was a volley-ball game between the managers and other
employees.
I missed seeing the kids dancing with several clowns.
Three huge cakes with TCA emblem on one, AC on another, and
the third of the big cakes had the 60th Birthday logo on it.
Everywhere face-painted kids, clowns, and ladies in "historical"
stewardess uniforms. Fraser Muir in a TCA pilot's uniform. And a
dunking machine "processed" several laughing Airport senior
managers!
Inside the museum Pionairs had many memorabilia - all set up
around the Museum's Lockheed 10A CF-TCA. Fraser Muir brought five
display cases of items from the Company archives. Also Ottawa
Pionairs brought three tables of historic items, including the
first TCA timetable, and six years of bound copies of the
employees' original newspaper -"Between Ourselves". Pat Hare
produced numerous artifacts, as well as a Company 40th birthday
videotape that the Museum played all day with another received just
the day before, made for the 60th Birthday.
Pionair teams of four persons took turns in manning the exhibits,
and had a fine time talking with party-goers of all ages.
The Ottawa District employees' Birthday Party team, spearheaded
by Diane Kyd were wonderful. From the June beginning they involved
the Pionairs, eventually concentrating on artifacts. The birthday
party, and the May involvement of Pionairs in the Rapidair draws
have produced steadily-growing bonds between AC employees and
Pionairs.
Also one member of the District's employee team a "go-getter"
member who went to Halifax to see how they handled it was
Station Attendant Roger Guilbeault. He also handled getting all
the food and cakes -- and the "duck tank" from a service club.
As a result one of their people came to Ottawa, brought a
table-full of artifacts, and pitched in to help the picnic team
feed and entertain everyone.
A super birthday party for everyone there!
Cheers!
Bob

Gordon Danziel sends us this -
During the heat of the space race in the 1960's, the U.S.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration decided it needed a ball
point pen to write in the zero gravity confines of its space capsules.
After considerable research and development, the Astronaut Pen was
developed at a cost of about $241 million U.S. The pen worked and also
enjoyed some modest success as a novelty item back here on Earth. The
Soviet Union, faced with the same problem, used a pencil.

. Gord Hykle sends us this -
Has anyone noticed the number of people who are planning to
celebrate the start of the new millennium a year early? In our
area, nightclubs and restaurants are encouraging customers to
book now for New Years Eve Dec. 31 1999.
There is a business on one of the main downtown streets that has
put up a large display on their building that is counting down
the days to Jan 1 2000.
The actual date for the start of the new decade is Jan. 1, 2001.
The end of this decade, this century and the current decade is
Dec. 31, 2000.
The reason for this is that our present calendar does not have a
year zero. If one works backward to the beginning, the first
decade runs from 1 to 10. The first century similarly runs from
year 1 to 100 and the first similarly started on Jan. 1 of
the year 1. The second similarly will end on Dec 31, 2000 and the
3rd will begin next day, Jan. 1, 2001.
Any comments?
Gord.

. Vesta, our Chief Pilot, thought that maybe some of our readers
might enjoy reading this book.
"Flight Over Waitohi" is a new book by renowned aviation
historian G Rodliffe. It is about Richard Pearse (1877-1953) the
New Zealander who most likely achieved powered flight BEFORE the
Wrights!!
ISBN 0-473-05048-X # Publisher Avon Press Ltd, Auckland,
New Zealand
The book has an illuminating Foreword by Darrol Stinton MBE PhD
CEng FRAeS FRINA MIMechE RAF (Ret.). He says:
"The evidence presented, which points to Pearse having flown an
aeroplane (a power driven flying machine with supporting surfaces
fit for flight) shortly before the Wright Brothers in 1903, will
arouse hornets' nest of denial and counter claim."
"Myths are hard to dispel. In this world perceptions count more
than facts, and perceptions spawn myths. The fact is that we cannot
prove beyond reasonable doubt and probably never will, that Pearse
flew before the Wright Brothers. The evidence, gleaned in a quiet
landscape from farming population startled by the noise of an engine
with a flying machine attached, is from a background very different
from the expected and involved witnesses surrounding the Wrights.
All one can say is that it looks as though Pearse did so.
Not only that, he did it all on his own: building the engine,
experimenting with fuels and carburation, building and covering
the airframe.
Although the burden of proof has neither gravity nor weight of that
surrounding the Wrights, the evidence presented in this book is no
less valuable - because Pearse's witnesses were startled, not
expecting to see what they did. The Wright's were expectant."

BA PILOTS ALLOW GIRL TO VISIT COCKPIT, MEDIA HOWLS
Five-year-old Emily Pickersgill will not soon forget her recent
flight from Nice to London aboard a British Airways Boeing 757.
Neither will the crew. She got to visit the front office while
en route, sitting on the captain's knee under close supervision
and even pushing a button on the panel.
An enterprising photographer snapped a shot of the little lass in
the cockpit and the media had a field day with it.
Subsequently, the Captain, Phil Higton, and his unidentified
copilot were suspended by BA, but then quickly reinstated.
MISS ASHLEY, DEBUTANTE AT RENO:
Perhaps the ultimate collection of aircraft parts flying in close
formation, the hybrid MISS ASHELY II, has completed flight tests
and will race at Reno next week. The Unlimited Class racer
consists of a scratch-built P-51 Mustang fuselage, Learjet
wing panels and rear horizontal stabilizer, a Rolls Royce Griffon
engine and a landing gear from a mixture of Aerostar uppers,
Cheyenne lowers, Cessna 421 retractable struts, Caravan wheels
and brakes, and Gulfstream nose tires.
No word was available on who is actually forced to maintain
it or whether they have experience with all these aircraft types.
JAL PAX FIT TO BE TIED:
The normally staid Japanese -- in this case Japan Airlines -- have
adopted a policy many other carriers around the world may soon
copy: JAL has given its flight attendants permission to tie up
unruly passengers aboard their flights. The carrier's new policy
comes on the heels of some 15 cases of violence by passengers on
its planes thus far this year alone, with 40 in all of 1996 up
from 15 total in 1995.

THESE TWO PROBABLY SHOULDN'T FLY JAL:
It's stressful being an air traffic controller, even more so at
a major terminal like New York's La Guardia. That may be the
only defense for two controllers who engaged in a fistfight in
LGA's tower recently, apparently involving a racial slur.
We are unable to learn whether either participant tried to bite
the ear of the other.
