The messages you listen to never mention, "retirees". You hear such things as "press three if you are an active employee" and "if you are an active employee, you can use the fax line", etc. When I finally got through, I asked about that and was informed that retirees should do what they say an "active" employee can do. Perhaps you could check that out through your sources.' (Any thoughts on this Fraser? - eds) . Jack Morgan send us his thoughts about the Canadi>n issue - 'Glad to see the airline (AIR CANADA) doing so well but afraid that the gov'ts solution is to destroy AIR CANADA to stabilize Canadi>n. We are still being treated like a crown corporation, and I would like to see AIR CANADA take out full page ads in the major dailies making sure that everybody understands that there are thousands of share holders who are proud of what has been accomplished when we (AIR CANADA) were faced with the same revenue challenges as Canadi>n'. ~-=o0o=-~ . Found on the internet Air Canada became the first North American airline operator of the cost efficient and customer-friendly Airbus A319. Air Canada has ordered 35 of the 112 seat aircart to replace the DC9, and will be the largest Airbus fleet operator. The A319 will burn 32% less fuel than the DC9, carries 37% more cargo, 20% more passengers at almost twice the range of the DC9. Continental Airlines start daily non-stop flights from Houston to Lima, Peru and Newark, New York to Panama City then onward to Guayaquil, Ecuador. Boeing's Renton Assembly plant was transformed into a B737 theme park on Dec 10th as 50,000 employees, guest and airline customers got the first glimpse of a new version of the B737 series. ValuJet are rumoured to be buying MD-95 jetliners. Jet Airways, India's largest airline not government controlled ordered (4) B737-400 and (6) B737-800. Atlantic Southeast Airlines pilots are staging a slowdown which could disrupt holiday plans. Lufthansa report 92 flights disrupted during a recent walk out by employees over a pay dispute. Air Traffic Controllers strikes are affecting flight movements in Kenya. T.A.P. Portugals airline has restarted the Lisbon - Boston route. M.E.A., the Middle East Airline is making a comeback after the civil war in Lebanon. Airbus Industries is targeting the ad-hoc charter cargo market with its Super Transport A300-600ST freighter nicknamed "Beluga'. A fully restored Vickers Viscount, resplendant in the red and white colours of Capital Airlines is a resident at the Mid Atlantic Air Museum at Reading, Pennsylvania. ~-=o0o=-~ . Interline stuff The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has reviewed its Information Report for France issued on 15 August 1996 and advises Canadians that due to recent terrorist attacks in France, we recommend that Canadian travellers exercise caution and prudence, especially while travelling on public transportation facilities (i.e. subway) or walking near well- frequented street markets and other tourist sights (i.e. Eiffel Tower). Incidents of physical aggression against foreigners are infrequent. Paris is safe to explore during the day; however, like any large urban centre, travellers should exercise normal safety precautions and ensure their valuables are secure against theft, especially in crowded places such as airports, train stations and while travelling on public transportation facilities. A photocopy of personal documents should be kept in a separate place in case of loss. Canadians travelling by rental vehicle should be vigilant, particularly in southern France, due to the high incidence of vehicle break-ins. Avoid leaving valuables in the vehicle and use secure parking facilities, especially overnight. The Air Canada employee and retiree CHIP program is now in place. This is a permanent record of information related to travel entitlement for the employee/retiree, of his/her eligible family members and travel partners. The CHIP record will be used by the Winnipeg Call Centre, and other ticketing agents, to achieve consistant, accurate and faster bookings. CHIP will also be used to track electronically the use of travel entitlements, rendering usage of paper vouchers obsolete. The CHIP auto-decrements restricted pass/ticket allotments upon ticket issuance. For any objections on family/partner eligibility, pass allotments, priority to be used or other information contained in the record, contact Industry Travel, c/o Irene Vazalinskas. When in a foreign country resist the temptation to communicate with your hands. Some common North American gestures can cause embarrassment. For example, the thumbs-up sign is akin to 'the finger'; while in Spain that gesture can indicate allegiance with the Basque separatist movement. The OK sign is an obscene gesture in Uruguay, Spain and Brazil, but in Japan the sign will indicate to the cashier that you want your change in coins. ~-=o0o=-~ . The Publishing Services group plan to publish a travel tips booklet. The booklet will contain listings of great travel tips that WE HAVE DISCOVERED DURING OUR OWN TRAVELS. These tips could range from a great B & B in Victoria, a fantastic little restaurant in St.Sauveur, a great beach in Florida, an unbelievable shopping deal in New York, an incredible sunset in Key West, a romantic walk in Bermuda, a great night club in Los Angeles, a swinging beach bar in Barbados, a great happy hour in Honolulu or even a discount at duty free in Tampa. The Publishing Services are requesting you to submit a great travel tip via a form which is available. The listing will be by City and then by Category. The production cost is being borne by Air Canada and Xerox Canada. Publishing Services are donating the manpower and Xerox are providing the equipment and paper to produce the booklets. The booklets will then be given to the Dreams Takes Flight Committee for them to sell to Air Canada employees, other airline employees, parents and friends so we all can have more enjoyable trips and reap the benefits. ALL PROCEEDS WILL BE FOR DREAMS TAKE FLIGHT. Each listing will be reproduced in Engish or French as submitted. The booklet will NOT be translated. Not all submissions may be included. It is hoped the book will be published in February 1997. Please send submissions to: DTF PROJECT, DORVAL 231 Note from your editors - The above is a direct transcript from the form being provided. With regards to the 'rumour' reported by Syl Napolitano as relayed in Netletter Nr 107, Fraser Muir - President of the Pionairs has responded - ' Sorry it wasn't the intent to keep everyone in the dark; but as you can imagine that in a case like this one has to dot all the i's and cross all the t's before making any announcements. And after all this is the first time a decision of this magnitude or nature has ever been made since our organization started twenty years ago. There is also a letter going out to the membership explaining the reasons for this decision, and is as follows: Each year the semi-annual meeting of the National Executive and the District Directors is held at the site where the next Annual General Meeting is planned to take place. The purpose being, aside from conducting the required business transactions, to view, and evaluate the site. This year our meeting was held at the Pheasant Run Resort and Convention Centre in St. Charles, Ill., on November the 20 and 21. The National Executive and the District Directors concluded the ground transportation to and from the airport, and to and from the surrounding communities; as well as the level of service offered by the staff members failed to meet the basic standards we feel our members have come to expect. As a result, it has been decided to abandon plans to hold AGM '97 at Peasant Run Resort; instead it will be held at the Raddison Hotel, 777 University St., in Montreal, on June 1,2,3, and 4. The hotel was formerly the Hyatt Regency, and is located kitty-corner from the Bonnaventure Hotel and Complex, at University and St. Antoine Streets. The AGM Package providing all the details pertaining to AGM '97 will be mailed as planned in early February. Yours truly Fraser Muir, President Copies of this message will be going out to all members within the next couple of days. Copies will be printed today, envelopes stuffed and postmarked. ~-=o0o=-~ . The power was on and the temperature right, In hopes that the input would feed back that night. The system was ready, the program was coded, And memory drums had been carefully loaded; While adding a Christmasy glow to the scene, The lights on the console, flashed red, white and green. When out in the hall there arose such a clatter, The programmer ran to see what was the matter. Away to the hallway he flew like a flash, Forgetting his key in his curious dash. He stood in the hallway and looked all about, When the door slammed behind him, and he was locked out. Then, in the computer room what should appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer; And a little old man, who with scarcely a pause, Chuckled: "My name is Santa...the last name is Claus." The computer was startled, confused by the name, Then it buzzed as it heard the old fellow exclaim: "This is Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, And Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen." With all these odd names, it was puzzled anew; It hummed and it clanked, and a main circuit blew. It searched in its memory core, trying to "think"; Then the multi-line printer went out on the blink. Unable to do its electronic job, It said in a voice that was almost a sob: "Your eyes - how they twinkle - your dimples so merry, Your cheeks so like roses, your nose like a cherry, Your smile - all these things, I've been programmed to know, And at data-recall, I am more than so-so; But your name and your address (computers can't lie), Are things that I just cannot identify. You've a jolly old face and a little round belly, That shakes when you laugh like a bowl full of jelly; My scanners can see you, but still I insist, Since you're not in my program, you cannot exist!" Old Santa just chuckled a merry "ho, ho", And sat down to type out a quick word or so. The keyboard clack-clattered, its sound sharp and clean, As Santa fed this "data" to the machine: "Kids everywhere know me; I come every year; The presents I bring add to everyone's cheer; But you won't get anything - that's plain to see; Too bad your programmers forgot about me." Then he faced the machine and said with a shrug, "Merry Christmas to All," as he pulled out its plug! (author unknown) From Alan Rust,Sysop, ACRA Airline BBS, see web site http://www.mortimer.com/acra . While on the subject of computers, Alan also supplies us with the following information about computer virus - The Internet is constantly being flooded with information about computer viruses and Trojans. However, interspersed among real virus notices are computer virus hoaxes. While these hoaxes do not infect systems, they are still time consuming and costly to handle. The PKZ300 Trojan is a real Trojan program, but the initial warning about it was released over a year ago. Repeated circulation of the warning is a nuisance. Individuals who need the current release of PKZIP should visit the PKWARE web page at http://www.pkware.com. The "Irina" virus warnings are a hoax. The "Good Times" virus warnings are a hoax. There is no virus by that name in existence today. The "Deeyenda" virus warnings are a hoax. The Ghost.exe program was originally distributed as a free screen saver containing some advertising information for the author's company (Access Softek). and is not a virus. ~-=o0o=-~ . At about the same time Thursday, an AAL Fokker 100 with 80 on board encountered turbulence over New Mexico enroute from Salt Lake City to Dallas, injuring one.
