Subject: Netletter 21 - Between Ourselves. . Calling all AC Hams - following from Philip Pawsey - Last Tuesdays net had about 25 check ins. VE7WW Charlie Mackie is always on board and does a super job of controlling the net with great support from VE4TT John Doney in Morden, VE4TL Bill Loftus in WG who is just out of the hospital after breaking a hip. Bill now reports that he had problems extending and retracting his port undercarriage. I suggested that the trouble maybe is because they left the pins in. Other regular check ins are VE3AZA CHUCK PALMER, VE3AGO DOUG MARCHANT,VE3CXA GORD MCKEN,VE3RH RUBE HADFIELD, VE3ST GRAHAM WILLIAMS, VE3TTX JACK RUSSELL, VE3JSB BOB BROWN, VE2DEM DAVE WALKER, VE2QX GORD HYKLE (GORD IS NOT FEELING TOO WELL THESE DAYS, ON MEDICATION WITH SIDE EFFECTS), VE1BZL JOHN STEWART,VE1CAJ DON WHITE, VO1CA TOM CUNNINGHAM (our only ck in from the rock), and several more from time to time. Personally, Philip talks to VE3OWC-Walter Chopp and VE2BQJ-Jack McDougall and VE1DLB Don Beatty each morning down in Lakeland and Dade Cit FLA. Never say anything important but manage to keep in touch. There is not quite as much packet radio activity now since E mail has come in but I still enjoy it and manage to check in a few times each day. Had a long discussion with VE2FUX -Allan McLeod and Bob Brown re the most likely closing of Mirabel Airport. That is going to be rough in this area because many of the people who work there live in the Lachute, St Jerome etc. area. Allan is just back from BQI where he spent a months vacation Al is the pilot who flys the L10A and is in charge of the Flt-Op end of it. -=o0o=- . At last Vesta's efforts to get free access to a BBS for Pionairs by means of a 1-800 nr is close to being achieved. Vesta and I have mentioned, from time to time, the BBS operated by Alan Rust in Vancouver. Alan offered to have a separate conference on his board for Pionairs and their interests, and these are in place. The Pionair Executive and Saville Hambleton, the District Director for Vancouver Island are now looking into this. Stayed tuned, Vesta and I are hoping to have good news to tell you before the AGM in Ottawa in May 1996. /------------------------------------\ | Alan Rust, SysOp, ACRA Airline BBS | /~~\_____/~~\__ | | FAX(604)536-4593, BBS(604) 541-1878 |___ \ ACRA_======)-+ | Surrey, British Columbia, Canada | ~~~|/~~ | | E-Mail - This email address is being protected from spambots. The North Star was basically a DC-4, extensively modified,
closer to a DC-6 in performance. BOAC had a few, renamed
'Argonaut'. Despite the opinion of a prominent Canadian
politician who called it "a travesty on the laws of
aerodynamics", it gave good service both to the RCAF
and Trans-Canada Airlines for several years.
Its main disadvantage was the very high noise level of the
short-stack Merlin engines. TCA spent a good deal of
money on cabin insulation and on extended exhaust
manifolds to route the noise under the wings.
Pilots liked them. I logged a few hours as first officer
on the military ones. They were nice to handle.

You're Not Working on the Year 2000 Date Problem Because...
21. You can't believe 2 missing digits can cause that
much trouble.
22. You don't thinks it's such a big deal... but you'll

23. You're planning a vacation that week.
24. There are no date problems in your code (you have
faith in your programmers).
25. You have no programmers (your competition hired
them away from you last week.)
26. You can't afford the cost of maintenance (but can
afford the cost of going out of business.)
27. You're waiting for someone to convince you the
problem is real.
28. It's not your job to worry about this.
29. You believe a comet is due to hit Earth in 2000.
So why bother?
30. Your management has not asked you to work on it yet.
. Concorde - on Jan 21st 1976 the first Air France Concorde
flight was between PAR and RIO via DAK. Since that time
the fleet has logged some 68 million miles, 75,000 flight
hours including 53,000 supersonic, and carried 1.1 million
PAX. Also 23 round the world flights have been performed.
. Comet news - the D.H.Comet at ORD was dismantled and
shipped to the Smithsonion, but due to lack of funds were
not able to restore the aircraft, so that Comet was
scrapped.
. The following letter received from author Peter Pigott -
"I am an aviation author researching a book on the history
of commercial aviation in Canada. My last book was
"Flying Canuck! Famous Canadian Aviators." and dealt with
aviation giants like Billy Bishop and "Punch" Dickins.
In this one I would like to portray the accomplishments
of men and women in our aviation history whose work is
less wellknown - from shopfloor, ticket counter, airside
or stores. I would like to hear from anyone with memories
of working in the airline from the day C.D.Howe set it up
to the present. The "boardroom" history of facts and figures
I have. What my publisher is looking for is personal
anecdotes, impressions and thoughts. From the North Stars
to computers, Lancastrians to the Airbuses ... it is an
opportunity to record what will soon be lost to history
for ever. I cannot promise to use all the material sent in
and will naturally have to adapt the writing to my own style
and needs. However, I will acknowledge all help given."

K.L.M. to hire 2,700 flight attendants.
Qantas named 'Airline of the year' by Air Transport World
magazine.
Air Canada's recently reported profit of CA$129 reported
in the media for 1995 was in error. The year was 1994 -
we knew that!
. Computers becoming a taxing issue -
The City of Brussels became the only city in Belgium
to collect a yearly tax on all computer screens used by
companies, ostensibly because computers cost jobs. The
tax will replace a tax on motors, introduced at the turn of
the century in the belief that all motors - electric and
steam - would eliminate jobs. (Hope the Feds are not
listening!)
. Aron Charad sends us these thoughts to ponder upon -
Further thoughts on the Y2K problem mentioned in nr 16
You're Not Working on the Year 2000 Date Problem Because...
21. You can't believe 2 missing digits can cause that
much trouble.
22. You don't thinks it's such a big deal... but you'll
have a programmer wear a beeper just in case anything
goes wrong.
Peter Pigott can be contacted at
1158 St. Jerome Crescent, Orleans, Ontario, K1C 2A8.
. That's it for this time, please we need your input,
comments and email addresses of any others who may be
interested.

Rolls Royce Plc hoping to annouce a large jet engine order

. The following info from Gord Hykle
This year's AC/TCA list is now available from me via E-mail
for anyone having the Micosoft Word or Word Perfect word
procesors. The four-page file of 39k bytes uses a normal style
in New Courier font size 9 (proportional letter spacing to get
column alignment). Page is Landscape 11" X 8.5", margins
1/4 in. top and bottom, .5" left and .2" right. All lines are
equal in length and terminated with a pargraph marker.
Each line can be deleted, copied, duplicated and moved as
items in a Word document. Adding a line to a page will bump the
bottom line to the next page but page 4 contains some extra
blank lines that can be deleted for each addtion made to
maintain the file length and not overflow to a page 5.
The file will arrive and be displayed with the Paragraph
Markers "on" to show these and spacing dots but they will not
print. I have left them on to assist in modifying data while
retaining line length. If you don't like them , shut
them off with the Para Markr button on the Standard Toolbar.
If you want copies via E-mail send me a request so I can
add your E-mail address to my address book and forward you
a copy. I use Compuserve and a 28.8 bps modem so the file
leaves here in less then a minute..
The lists are primarily of interest to active & retired Company
hams. Anyone who was ever a TCA or AC employee or spouse and
has a current Amateur Radio license may be listed with a full
postal address. But non-ham Pionairs will find many
old friends listed with their current full addresses sorted
by call signs in each of the regions. There is also available
a one-page list sorted by name with cross-reference to the
calls for those who do not know the ham"s call sign.
As always, I appreciate any info about address changes or
errors on the list.
