A reminiscence by Charles Mackie 'Well I started with the company TCA at the time in 1941 as a Radio Operator and was in Communications more or less during my whole career with the airline. However I did spend 3 years as a flight Radio Officer on the CGTAS operation from 1943 to 1946 and also took over the communication facilities from the Military for the Trans Atlantic civilian frequencies in 1947 while I was posted to Goose Bay, Labrador for better than a year. After that I moved from one station to another in Communications and eventually ended up in Victoria in 1952 and stayed here until I retired in 1974. Before I was with the airline I was with Canadaian Airways Ltd working in Winnipeg and, then in other northern stations, then did a spell with the DOT at the Monitoring station in Ottawa for a year or so. I do run the TCA AC net (radio) every Tuesday and we do have a roster of some 200 plus names of individuals who do hold an Amateur radio license. So will be looking forward to your netletter to pass on to them any info that I may have and believe they are interested in. ------- I have a couple of books here that your readers might be interested in, the first one "From the Flight Deck" published by Van Wells Pub. John Dehlgren send us the following - The Key-Bird Who has heard the wail of a siren As an ambulance speeds down the street Or the deep throated roar of a lion Down in Africa's jungle heat; The piercing scream of a Tiger As nightly it stalks it's prey, Or a huge locomotive's shrill whistle, As it roars through the night on it's way. But these sounds sink to a whisper You have heard nothing 'til I'm told Of the bloodd-curdlin' cry of the "KEY-BIRD" In the Artic's frigid cold. This strange bird looks like a Raven, Only it's gruesome, hideous and bold, As at night it sits on the North Pole Crying, "KEY-KEY-KEY-RIPES but it is cold. Ray Valois sends us this little gem - This is a story of a very alert United Airlines agent faced with a cancelled flight and trying to find alternate flights for passengers. There is of course a long line up at her gate check-in position. A "gentleman" who probably deserved to fly as cargo, storms up to the counter and says: "I absolutely must get on the next flight out and it has to be first class". The agent replies: "I am sorry, sir. I am doing everything possible to get everyone affected by the flight cancellation on the earliest flights out. I am sure that I will be able to work something out to your satisfaction." He replies, very loudly: "Do you have any idea who I am?" The agent immediately picked up the mike to the airport PA system and said: "There is a gentleman at counter 17 who does not know who he is. If anyone can help him, please come to counter 17 to assist in his identification". Everyone in the line up could not help but smile, some broke out into fits of laughter. The "gentleman" replied: "(Explicative - the usual four letter word) F... you!" Without missing a beat, the agent replied: "You will have to get in line for that as well, sir". The agent got an award for handling a difficult situation. -=o0o=- . Thought for the day contributed by Vesta Stevenson You know you have been flying too long when - ...
