Canadian Aerospace History - continued from Netletter nr 47 - supplied by Vesta In order to develop the capabilities of its space industry, Canada undertook in the mid-1970s to provide a Remote Manipulator Arm (CANADARM) for the US space shuttle. The arm was successfully deployed during the second flight of the space shuttle Columbia in 1981, and gained world recognition for the technological capability of Spar Aerospace and the NRC. The Modern Industry has a hierarchy of 3 tiers of capabilities and products. In the first tier are the principal companies with integrated design and production capability for complete aircraft and engines. The second-tier companies manufacture components and subsystems for the principal companies in Canada and abroad. The third tier comprises machine shops, heat treatment shops, foundries, forges and other companies whose business is predominantly the aerospace industry. All aerospace companies must ensure a very high quality and reliability of products, and as a result the companies have a high cost structure specific to aerospace. They tend not to serve general markets, other than nuclear engineering, which has somewhat similar quality and reliability demands. -=o0o=- . John Dahlgren sends us the following - The World According to Student Bloopers By Richard Lederer St. Paul's School One of the fringe benefits of being an English or History teacher is receiving the occasional jewel of a student blooper in an essay. I have pasted together the following "history" of the world from certifiably genuine student bloopers collected by teachers throughout the United States, from eighth grade through college level. Read carefully, and you will learn a lot. The inhabitants of ancient Egypt were called mummies. They lived in the Sarah Dessert and traveled by Camelot. The climate of the Sarah is such that the inhabitants have to live elsewhere, so certain areas of the dessert are cultivated by irritation. The Egyptians built the Pyramids in the shape of a huge triangular cube. The Pramids are a range of mountains between France and Spain. The Bible is full of interesting caricatures. In the first book of the Bible, Guinesses, Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree. One of their children, Cain, once asked, "Am I my brother's son?" God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac on Mount Montezuma. Jacob, son of Isaac, stole his brother's birth mark. Jacob was a patriarch who brought up his twelve sons to be patriarchs, but they did not take to it. One of Jacob's sons, Joseph, gave refuse to the Israelites. Pharaoh forced the Hebrew slaves to make bread without straw. Moses led them to the Red Sea, where they made unleavened bread, which is bread made without any ingredients. Afterwards, Moses went up on Mount Cyanide to get the ten commandments. David was a Hebrew king skilled at playing the liar. He fought with the Philatelists, a race of people who lived in Biblical times. Solomon, one of David's sons, had 500 wives and 500 porcupines. The Netletter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet, BBS's, travel news, cheap, excuse me, inexpensive, accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, keep our Air Canada family together and in touch. How many times are we referred to CIC *80 in the 'Horizons' or while listening to the CIC Daily Info 1-800 number - and how are we able to do that? Re: the new runway, the official designation *will* be 15R-33L, with the existing north-south runway renamed 15L-33R. The centerline of 15R-33L will be 1067 m west of the centerline of 15L-33R; its paved length will be 2769 m (9085 ft), with an operational length (for arrivals only, during crosswind conditions) of 2591 m (8500 ft), since the threshold will be displaced by about 183 m (600 ft) at each end. The north end of 15R-33L will intersect with the northern most existing taxiway; the south end will have a taxiway connecting to existing Delta (D) taxiway. I'm still not sure about the Lima Outer Marker -- the diagrams I've seen do not appear to show any changes in that area, but I could be mistaken. Following found by Vesta while browsing in NaNet Aviation conference 04/17/96. 'Hi. I'm new to BBSes, a non-pilot, but I have been working around Toronto (YYZ) since 1981 (9 years with Wardair in their computer department, while it lasted; over 5 years in the Airport Planning Dept.), so aviation has been part of my life for quite a while now. For anyone who is interested, the latest news re: NAVCAN -- the new "privatized" agency will not be taking over air traffic control functions (local control, area control, and tower functions, where applicable) until July 1/96 or later. It will be the same people and hardware (including the wonky, problem-prone RAMP radar system, CAATS (overdue and still not fully functional), and the planned new Control Tower, but higher fees could be in the works. The court case (with the Pearson Development Corp. suing the gov. over hypothetical lost profits from the cancelled T1/T2 Redevelopment scheme) drags on, with both sides leaning on statistics to support their positions. Work continues on the north-south parallel runway this summer, with (I think) planned completion and commissioning expected by 1997-8. Other airside projects include construction of a "satellite" de-icing facility (initially a single pad) in the infield between Taxiway D in the south, the tower in the north, and the two north-south runways (the 15-33s). This may be in service by next winter, in time to compensate for some reduction in the south hold area as the planned dual taxiway system parallel to Taxiway A(lpha) are constructed. Additional pads will be added to the infield facility as required. Meanwhile, initial plans for reconstruction of the passenger terminals seem to point to fairly early relocation of cargo and other functions from their current center east of 15-33 (between T1 and T3). The entire east side of the airport (from the current hangar area along Airport Road south to Renforth Drive) will eventually be redeveloped as a single continuous passenger terminal complex, according to the designs favored by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority. Speaking of which, airport employees are still awaiting official notification of the date when control of Toronto (YYZ) will pass from the govt. to the GTAA -- some rumours suggest that the actual turnover may not occur until early 1997. Given that a minimum of six months notice is required, the earliest the transfer could take place now would be around November 1. Of more general interest is the fact that the cap on the hourly number of aircraft movements has been increased slightly to (I think) 86 movements per hour (from 82). However, it is unlikely that more slots will be made available for general aviation, since increasing competition on U.S.-Canada routes is generating major growth in the number of flights and passengers. I can provide more precise details on these and other topics if anyone out there is interested. Please let me know if there is any issue in particular I can investigate -- statistics and plans are literally my job! This historical view of the industry would be incomplete without reference to the development of Canadian Aircraft Electronics. CAE has grown from a fledgling company in Montreal in 1945 to a corporation with subsidiary aerospace companies across Canada engaged in the design and manufacture of aircraft simulators, avionics (aviation electronic equipment), and aircraft components and subsystems. In space-related activities, Canada's industry is modest by comparison with the US, Russian and European industries, but it is first-rate in special fields. The industry originated in the 1920s with ground-based research projects for the study of the Earth's upper atmosphere conducted by scientists from U of Saskatchewan. An extension of these researches using high-altitude balloons was initiated in the 1950s by DRB, and led to work with sounding rockets, developed by Bristol Aerospace, Winnipeg, using the Black Brant rocket. In 1954 the army conducted the first series of rocket firings at Fort Churchill, Man. At the end of 1958, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) accepted a DRB proposal to create jointly a sounding satellite, the Alouette I, which was supported by a network of Canadian ground stations at Ottawa, Prince Albert and Resolute Bay and 10 other stations around the world. The satellite was launched in 1962 and was a significant technological success. This entry into the field of space technology aroused considerable interest in using the technology for communications satellites. Hughes Aircraft Corp (US), with Northern Electric and Spar Aerospace, designed and developed the Anik I, II and III satellites, launched in Nov 1972, April 1973 and May 1975 respectively.
