About us!

Since October 1995, Vesta Stevenson and Terry Baker have been issuing an email newsletter for those ex Air Canada types who have provided us with their email addresses. The Newsletter was created by Vesta, who gave the name 'NetLetter' and added 'Between Ourselves' - a TCA periodical with which you are probably familiar with from the 50's and 60's. It was then changed to "Between Yourselves" to avoid confusion when "Horizons" resurrected the name. Then finally simplified to just "The NetLetter".

We believe that our NetLetter, which originates from Vancouver Island, was the FIRST to use this medium to disperse information for retirees of Air Canada.

The NetLetter contains airline related information such as anecdotes or stories supplied by some of the recipients, Internet tips, travel news, cheap... excuse me, "inexpensive" accommodations, tours, interline travel, and, in some small way, we help keep our Air Canada family together and in touch.

	Dear NetLetter, Marlie Kelsey sends us this sad news... I received information through Jim McKeachie today that Bill Shivock passed away of Cancer on July 11th. He was well know by many of us in CPAir and Canadian Airlines. I don't know the details of his career but it is worth mentioning to your members as I am sure many people will remember him. 	Be flexible with your travel plans. This year, the peak summer travel season is especially busy. We re experiencing record high load factors at the same time as Mother Nature is throwing severe weather patterns our way. A case in point is Halifax. The combination of unexpectedly consistent fog, ongoing runway renovations and full flights are putting a strain on the operation. If you plan to travel to Halifax in the next short while (until the renovations are completed hopefully this week), please be aware that it may be difficult. If possible, delay your travel. If that's not possible, remember to be patient. Your colleagues at the airport are busy assisting customers and will not be able to help employees travelling on stand-by. Travel Reminder for Air Canada Pionairs and Others Now that the Summer Travel is in full swing, it was thought that a reminder note was required to all on our E-Mail List. Those who would like to assist other members, Please print and make available to others. Please note the word EMPLOYEE also refers to RETIREE RESPONSIBILITY OF EMPLOYEES INCLUDING RETIREES: Introduction: An AC/Jazz/Zip employee, retiree, widow/er and any other travel privilege holder is responsible for the use of travel privileges issued to himself/herself, eligible family members and travel partners, regardless of any circumstances. It is the prerogative of the employee alone to offer such privileges to family members or travel partners. All contingent passengers are subject to the requirements as listed in this page where applicable - it is the employee, retiree or widow/er's responsibility to ensure all parties are aware of these requirements. Personal travel privileges on Air Canada and other airlines are solely for the purpose of pleasure travel and not for any personal/business venture for the employee, family member or travel partner or on behalf of an individual/company for which a salary or commission is paid. Travel privileges are not transferable and it is unlawful to sell travel privileges to another person. Personal Conduct: In addition to the adherence of the dress code policy, employees, retirees, spouses, widow/ers, their dependents, parents, travel partners and interliners are expected to be unobtrusive and to act with decorum at all times. The following are examples of unacceptable behavior; - Demanding an upgrade - Occupying areas to the exclusion or discomfort of revenue passengers - Entering the galley or monopolizing the attention of the gate agents and/or flight attendants - Drinking to excess - Loud/ belligerent/argumentative conduct - Indiscretion in making reference to the "good deals" available to airline employees and their families when interacting in the presence of/with revenue passengers - Challenging personnel dealing with operational requirements i.e. refusal to deplane in an oversell situation - Unauthorized boarding of a flight Limitations are applicable on all Travel Benefits as follows; - Advance seat selection not permitted - Denied boarding compensation is not applicable - Online/Interline protection & interim expenses not applicable for delay, cancellation & disruption of service (IROP/SHED CHANGE) Financial - Contingent passengers travelling on a space available basis are; - expected to be financially able to purchase their return transportation in the event they are unable to complete their journey due to the limited availability of seats or irregular operations. In the event a full- fare ticket is used for travel, AC will not reimburse any costs associated to the purchase of the ticket. Other Airline (OAL) reduced rate tickets for return are recommended as backup and should be obtained prior to commencement of travel as employee ticketing may be limited or unavailable from other cities. Penalty - Employees will be responsible for payment of any customs or immigration penalties incurred by the airline due to the presentation of incorrect or incomplete documentation for their own or eligible person's travel. In addition, should the company be required to pay or deposit any fine or incur any expenditure by reason of the employee's or eligible person's failure to comply with laws, orders, regulations or demands of the countries concerned; the employee shall, on demand, refund to the company any amount so paid or deposited or any expenditure so incurred. Immigration Travel - privileges cannot be used for purposes of immigration, other than under the provisions for a company employee and their families who have been transferred. Travel for the purpose of immigration requires the purchase of a full fare revenue ticket, whether on Air Canada or any other carrier. Any misuse of employee travel privileges will require payment of the full-fare and because any breach is considered by the company to be a serious misdemeanor, will be subject to disciplinary action and/or suspension of travel privileges. Other Airlines - An employee is prohibited from personally soliciting free or reduced rate transportation from other air carriers. Other airlines have their own dress codes which may differ from Air Canada's, all contingent passengers should be aware of the standards to which they will be required to comply when travelling on other airlines. Misuse of privilege - Misuse or attempted misuse of travel privileges is considered by air Canada as a serious misdemeanor, such as any breach of the rules is subject to disciplinary action. Any case of misuse/attempted misuse of travel privileges, including obtaining and attempting to obtain such transportation by misrepresentation of fact, is to be reported in writing to the manager, Employee Travel. An Employee under disciplinary suspension is prohibited from using any personal travel privileges on Air Canada and other carriers with which Air Canada has agreements for free and reduced rate transportation and is prohibited from soliciting pass privileges from another employee. An Employee must surrender their ID and travel card and any unused travel documents issued from the employee allotment if suspended as per the following; - suspension pending discharge - suspension pending review following a court decision on a charge under the criminal code. Any employee who is discharged or otherwise has their employment with the company terminated for just cause shall not be eligible to receive travel privileges wither in their own right or through any other employee.

	Air Canada recently announced it is canceling its much-vaunted nonstop service to India, replacing it with one-stop service via Zurich and down gauging from an Airbus A340 to a Boeing 767- 300, but returning service to year-round and daily. Effective Oct. 30, Air Canada will serve Delhi via Zurich on a daily year-round basis from Toronto. The transfer of flights to India via Switzerland will allow Air Canada to re-introduce year-round service to Zurich while returning to daily service from its current three-times weekly nonstop service from Toronto. In addition, Air Canada plans to pursue a code share agreement with future Star Alliance member, Swiss International Air Lines, by which Swiss would sell seats on the Air Canada-operated flights via Zurich. Air Canada launched its much-publicized nonstop service to Delhi in October 2003. At the time it was daily, but the airline since then reduced service to five times a week and now operates it three times a week for the low season. Park'N Fly Active and Retired Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz employees can take advantage of a 50 per cent discount for leisure travel on SelfPark and Valet Parking at any Park'N Fly location across Canada, including Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Windsor, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. You will be required to present your Air Canada identification card. Retirees who present their identification card at any Park N'Fly will receive the discount. Park'N Fly is Canada's only national parking company and all locations are conveniently open 24- hours a day, 365 days a year. Your Code for use a Exit Pay Machines is : 31033# Avoid Halifax Airport renovations, combined with fog and the peak of air travel season in Canada all add up to a nightmare for travelers trying to fly through Halifax International Airport. For weeks now, scores of flights have had to be cancelled or delayed during bad weather because airport construction work that has meant the airline's system for instrument landings has been temporarily shut down. Dozens of flights were affected in the last weekend alone. The spectacle, which has left many travelers angry that the airport waited until the busy summer months to do the work, is an ironic chapter for an airport that recently won a series of passenger satisfaction awards. Halifax International Airport ranked first in overall passenger satisfaction for airports worldwide with under five million passengers, for the second year in a row. In addition, Halifax was rated as best airport in the Americas of any size for overall satisfaction, and best domestic airport worldwide.

	These results of June s load factor performance the highest ever for June marking 15 consecutive months of record load factors. Thursday June 30th we boarded 111,980 passengers, the single highest day in our history. To top it off, we had a domestic load factor of 81.3 per cent, 7.7 points higher than our main competitor. With the departure July 1st., of flight AC065 en route to Seoul from Toronto, Air Canada inaugurated its first-ever non-stop service between eastern Canada and Korea. Russia s first scheduled all-cargo airline, Airbridge Cargo (ABC), which is part of the Volga-Dnepr Group of companies, has signed a marketing agreement with Air Canada Cargo. The agreement covers scheduled and charter Boeing 747F services to and from the European hubs of Frankfurt and Amsterdam to the former Soviet Union and Asia. The contract is effective immediately and will run until March 31, 2007. Air Canada Cargo, as a GSA, already markets the unique capabilities of the Antonov AN-124-100 aircraft in the Volga-Dnepr Airlines fleet for Canada's Department of National Defence.

	Australia began an exercise on Monday using part-time workers such as university students and retired people to screen passengers at airports, drawing criticism that the plan would endanger security. U.S. airlines must inform passengers about where aircraft assembled. Prompted by a U.S. lawmakers concern that many aircraft are being manufactured outside the country, U.S. airlines must now comply with a new rule which requires them to tell passengers where the plane they're flying on was built. Carriers, including American Airlines and United, must place the information on the plastic cards in the seat backs that describe emergency exits. The FAA estimated it would cost carriers $522,000 US to print stickers with this information and place them on the placards in 6,559 aircraft. .

	An Air France A330 carrying 196 passengers ran into a herd of cattle at Nigeria's Port Harcourt International Airport about 4 a.m. last Wednesday. None of those on board were hurt. Seven cows were killed. The A330 was checked and found to be undamaged. Local reports were not clear as to whether the cattle were on a runway or a taxiway, but they did say -- and we quote -- that security has been "beefed up" to prevent further incidents.

	Winter flights from Toronto to P.E.I. discontinued. Numerous media outlets have been reporting that Air Canada will be discontinuing winter service between Charlottetown and Toronto, a route we have been serving year-round for 31 years. This is a business decision. We use profits from the summer operation on this route to make up for the marginal performance of services during the leaner months and the rest of the year. However, this summer, we are expecting reduced profitability due to distortions in the marketplace following the Government of Prince Edward Island’s decision to subsidize summer-only, daily, non-stop WestJet flights and to subsidize a U.S. carrier on another route. This government’s intervention led us to cancel our plans to increase summer service and also forced us to reconsider our winter operation. Despite numerous discussions and meetings with P.E.I. officials, including the Premier, over the past few months, we were unable to come to an agreement on how to re-establish a level playing field for Air Canada and therefore we made a business decision to terminate winter service between Charlottetown and Toronto. This decision does not affect our year- round non-stop daily service from Charlottetown to Montreal and Halifax and summer seasonal service between Charlottetown and Toronto will be reinstated in the spring of 2006. Air Canada announced winter schedule changes, including new routes and flights on the company's transborder network between the U.S. and Canada. The additional capacity comes as Air Canada and its regional affiliate Air Canada Jazz receive new Bombardier and Embraer regional jets. Details of the new routes are: - Abbotsford/Toronto: Effective Dec. 17, Air Canada will introduce daily nonstop flights using 93-seat Embraer 190 aircraft. Air Canada will offer the only daily nonstop service between these two cities. - Abbotsford/Calgary: Effective Dec. 17, Air Canada Jazz will introduce three-times daily nonstop flights using 75-seat Bombardier Jet CRJ-705 aircraft in a two-class layout. - Air Canada also is increasing service on other routes domestically, including: - Vancouver/Toronto: Up to 15 daily nonstop flights with the introduction of one additional flight. - Vancouver/Calgary: Up to 17 daily nonstop flights with the introduction of three additional flights. - Calgary/Toronto: Up to 10 daily nonstop flights with the introduction of one additional flight. - Edmonton/Toronto: Up to seven daily nonstop flights with the introduction of one additional flight. - Winnipeg/Toronto: Up to nine daily nonstop flights with the introduction of one additional flight. - Toronto/Montreal: Up to 52 daily flights with the introduction of two additional flights. - Fort McMurray (Alberta)/Calgary: Up to two daily nonstop flights with the introduction of jet service effective Oct. 30. - Moncton (New Brunswick)/Montreal: Effective immediately, Air Canada Jazz will increase service to four daily nonstop flights with the introduction of one additional flight, using 50-seat CRJ aircraft. Deer Lake (Newfoundland)/Montreal: Effective Oct. 30, Air Canada will extend summer flights to year- round service offering the only daily nonstop flights, using 50-seat Regional Jet CRJ-200 aircraft operated by Air Canada Jazz. - St. John's (Newfoundland)/Montreal: Effective Oct. 30, Air Canada will extend summer flights to year- round service offering the only daily nonstop flights, using 75-seat CRJ-705 aircraft operated by Air Canada Jazz. Included in the schedule will be daily nonstop flights on the following routes: - Vancouver/San Diego, Calgary/Newark and Calgary/Orlando as follows: - Vancouver/San Diego: Effective Dec. 17, Air Canada Jazz will introduce daily nonstop flights using 75-seat Canadair Regional Jet CRJ-705 aircraft. - Calgary/Newark: Effective Dec. 1, Air Canada will introduce daily nonstop flights using 93-seat Embraer 190 aircraft. 	The Boeing Company has officially launched the 737-900ER (Extended Range) following the completion of a sales agreement for up to 60 of the airplanes from Lion Air. WestJet announced it has sold its Boeing 737-200 fleet to Miami-based Apollo Aviation Group. WestJet currently has 10 737-200 aircraft remaining in its fleet, all of which will be replaced by Next- Generation 737 aircraft by March 2006. Apollo has also purchased WestJet's inventory of spare parts and engines, as well as the company's 737-200 flight simulator. Beginning in March 2006, WestJet will operate a fleet comprised exclusively of Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. The airline currently operates 44 Next-Generation aircraft in its fleet of 54 aircraft .

	(From Herb Noble) I'll bet you just hate it when you publish some tidbit of history and somebody wants to correct you. But I am a North Star junkie, and could I offer you some information about the names that were given to the first four North Stars? These aircraft were the first four aircraft built by Canadair as pressurized aircraft and were constructed for TCA, up until that time we were operating North Stars that belonged to the RCAF and were on loan, these were unpressurized models know as DC-4M1, To us and C54-GM to us in the airforce, there were 6 of them and they were all returned to RCAF by 16 March 1948, the fin numbers were 84 through 89, and these numbers were changed to 184 through 189 when TCA decided to identify fleet type by fin numbers. So the first four DC-4M2 aircraft delivered to TCA had names and also were fin numbered starting with 201 Fin Number 201 was Cartier, registration was CF-TFA 202 was Cornwallis, registration was CF-TFB 203 was Champlain, registration was CF-TFC 204 was Selkirk, registration was CF-TFD The naming of aircraft ceased at that point, well almost, TCA operated 23 North Stars, four of them were converted to Freighters in house by the company, these four aircraft were named Flying Merchants, the name was painted on each aircraft and was as a result of a company wide contest to name the aircraft. The freighters were unique as well, 202 became a freighter after a landing incident, the aircraft was ferried to Montreal and during the repair was converted to a freighter, The other three freighters were the three North Starts that TCA purchased for Canadian Pacific Airlines, they had four North Stars, they were known as C-4-1 and had fin numbers 401 through 404, Fin number 402 was destroyed in a landing accident in Tokyo, the remaining three became 221, 222 and 223 and were to become three freighters, before all three could be converted, 223 was lost on a mid air collision over Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. North Star 210 was then converted to a freighter in it's place. The C-4-1 North Stars bought from CPA were interesting in the fact that the pedestal in the cockpit was completely different from the TCA aircraft, the reason being that the CPA aircraft had reversing propellers, TCA locked out the reversing Props, but chose not to modify the pedestals. Star Alliance News
	United announced it will offer three additional weekly flights between its airport hub at Los Angeles International Airport and Sydney Kingsford-Smith Airport in Australia, between Dec. 15, 2005, and April 27, 2006. United, which already operates daily on this route will operate an evening departure from Los Angeles on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays and an early afternoon departure from Sydney on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Both flights arrive in the morning. The flights will be operated with a Boeing 747-400 in a three-class layout.

	Embraer announced they have delivered the first three of 15 Embraer 175 jets to Air Canada, the launch customer for the model.Deliveries of all 15 Embraer 175s to Air Canada are expected to be complete by the end of the year. Deliveries of the first two Embraer 175 jets to Air Canada took place last week. The Embraer 175s for Air Canada are configured in two classes. They will carry 73 passengers, nine in Executive Class (three abreast at 38-inch pitch) and 64 in Hospitality Class (four abreast at 34- and 32-inch pitch). Registrations are; fin 371 c/n 00083 registered Jul 19 C-FEIQ, 372 00085 Jul 26 C-FEIX, 373 00086 Jul 27 C-FEJB Air Canada Cargo Plan Faces Government Set- Back - Report An application by Air Canada Cargo to operate a Toronto/Calgary/Shanghai cargo flight has been turned down by the Canadian government after a domestic cargo operator objected. And the National Post reports that the government says it plans to investigate the company's other dedicated cargo operations, all of which currently are operated by foreign operators on a wet-lease basis. Air Canada had wanted to operate the Shanghai service through a wet-lease arrangement with Atlanta-based World Airways. Air Canada already has wet-lease agreements with operators for flights to Germany and China, but this flight would have stopped in Calgary. According to the report by the National Post, Air Canada's bid was opposed by Cargojet, a Canadian cargo operator, because the company says the arrangement would have amounted to cabotage, which is prohibited under the current Canada/U.S. bilateral agreement. Cargojet reportedly alleged in an affidavit that Air Canada had solicited business for a Toronto/Vancouver flight on wet-leased aircraft, an allegation Air Canada reportedly rejected initially, but then admitted. Cargojet, which operates 10 Boeing 727s on scheduled overnight service to 13 Canadian cities, is among the private Canadian cargo carriers that are fiercely protective of the restrictions that keep U.S. freight operators out of the Canadian market. Much of their business comes from ferrying cargo traffic from gateway airports to other Canadian cities - Cargojet for UPS, among others. Air Canada supports liberalization.

ICE (In Case of Emergency)
	A simple yet important suggestion. See below then pass it on. As long as everyone knows what ICE (In Case of Emergency) stands for, this is not a bad idea. It was thought up by an ambulance man/paramedic who found that at the scenes of accidents there were always mobile phones on the victims, but the emergency personnel didn't know which numbers to call and he thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name to file "next of kin" under. Following the disaster in London, East Anglian Ambulance Services have launched a national "In Case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero, Simon Weston. The idea is that you store the word " ICE " in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency." In an emergency situation, ambulance and/or hospital staff would then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do. And also email this to everybody in your address book. It won't take too many "forwards" before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest. You can put more than one contact name in your cellphone's address book. Just use ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

	Flights are full this summer - make your travel plans accordingly. As we’re facing record levels of customers this summer some destinations are proving especially problematic for stand-by travel. For instance, in Paris, a high volume of contingent passengers are waiting for space on flights, and in some cases, people have been waiting for several days. Also, with the 2005 Canada Summer Games ready to take place in Regina from Aug. 6 – 20 we anticipate heavy loads with many athletes and visitors making their way to and from the games. Please keep this in mind when making your travel plans. Remember, if you want to attempt travel on another airline you should travel with ZED tickets. Your airport colleagues' first priority is to care for our revenue customers and in a busy airport no last minute ZED tickets will be issued to employees.

	American Airlines said it was concerned that a plan to expand US daylight-saving time could disrupt international flight schedules and make it tough to compete with foreign carriers. Continental Airlines announced modifications in its free checked-bags policy for international travel, to reflect new weight limits of 50 lbs. each for up to two pieces. WestJet, the low cost Canadian airline want to obtain a 180 minute ETOPS (Extended Twin Engine Operation) clearance from Transport Canada so that they can operate their B737 on longer routes, such as Halifax to London UK or Vancouver to Hawaii.

Air Canada News
	In June, the Phantom Works/Chorus Motors team, in cooperation with Air Canada, installed an electric motor drive on an Air Canada 767 and conducted a series of tests. Air Canada pilots performed ground maneuvers on slopes and terrains typical of those at airports around the world, including driving in reverse from a gate and taxiing forward to a runway. Tests also were performed at ramp temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit and at loads of up to 94 percent of the maximum takeoff weight for the airplane. ACE announced it will follow its move to divest of part of its loyalty program Aeroplan with a similar spin-off of its wholly-owned regional unit Jazz. In addition to the 60 Embraer regional jets which Air Canada has recently begun inducting into its fleet at the mainline carrier, Jazz is receiving its own 50- and 75-passenger regional jets from Bombardier and will have a fleet of 73 jet aircraft by mid 2006, along with a more valuable role in the now profitable Air Canada network. Coming...Eventually...to a Seatback Near You Air Canada recently received the second of its three new regional workhorse models it will use to expand capacity in North America and introduce new trans-border routes to the U.S. With the aircraft, an Embraer 175, Air Canada unveiled its new interiors, to be rolled out fleet-wide over the next couple of years. Replacing the airline's green interiors, which have adorned the fleet for about a decade, will be new blue cloth interiors in business and economy class. But the new interior's biggest feature, its seatback television system, will not be installed until the fall. The new interiors will be installed on other aircraft as soon as the inflight entertainment system is ready. Originally to have been delivered, the hardware now will be installed in November with system software installed in December, Air Canada says. Following the Embraer 175s, the new interiors will be rolled out on the airline's Airbus narrowbody fleet, followed by its Boeing 767s and its Airbus A330s/A340s, a process that will take about two years.

	Regarding Herb Noble's comments on North Stars in NetLetter #893 The M-1 North Stars were still active in TCA service after March 1948. I started in August '48 and clearly remember working on them for some time after that. Especially using EC801 sealant to fix Wing Tank fuel leaks. I can't remember clearly but, didn't one of them (possilbly 188) get into some kind of a problem on a landing at Sidney, N.S. and get written off. Maybe other some of the other Ol' Codgers from those early days can help. On the other hand, there's probably not many of us left. And, I'll bet none of you have a 25 gallon North Star Engine Oil Tank for a pet, like I do. All the best to all, Jack Russell. (Retired since '83).
