Air Canada have re-launched daily non-stop seasonal flights between St. John's, NL and London Heathrow until September 30, 2012.

Air Canada Flt 001 Engine Failure
On 28th of May, 2012 at around 12:00 noon, an Air Canada 777 Flight 001 outbound from Toronto to Narita had a R/H engine failure and flameout on takeoff.
The aircraft dumped fuel and made a successful emergency landing with no injuries or further mishaps.
Below are some photos of the engine damage. Now you know why there were some very hot engine parts that fell to the ground. Luckily, no one was injured.

Legendary CFI Evelyn Bryan Johnson Dies At 102 Evelyn Bryan Johnson, who logged 57,635.4 hours in the air -- more than six years -- during her long flying career, died last week at age 102. Johnson, known as "Mama Bird," taught more than 5,000 students and gave more than 9,000 check rides for the FAA. She ran a small airport in Morristown, Tenn., until she was past 100.
"Mrs. Johnson said she would retire when she was old enough, which she never was," reads her New York Times obituary. "Each time she went up in a plane -- her last flight was as a passenger in 2009 -- she said she saw something new and beautiful.

This photo is the first delivery of the B747 from Boeing. There was no date on it, but must be from the 70's. More important in this photo we learned of the passing of Roy McCormack on Jan. 2012 and Dyce Moore on Apr. 2012 - both were 84 yrs. From Left to right Sam Gatelaro, Dyce Moore, John Baldwin AC President 1968 - 1974, Dunc Marshall, Boeing Rep, Mr. Nickesion AC and Roy McCormack. Note: I looked up John Baldwin's time at AC - went to Google and up came a whole bunch of stuff on him. He also just passed away March 2012 in Kingston ON. He was 98. JR

Ray Arnold has sent us this information together with some photos: Just to inform you that my father Arthur Arnold, who began his career with Trans- Canada Air Lines in the 1950s, transferred to Vancouver to become Air Canada Airport Manager, then Vancouver Reservations Manager, passed away on July 29th, just four months shy of his 98th birthday. Below we have musings from the "Between Ourselves" and "Horizons" magazine, Air Canada publications from years gone by, as well as various in-house publications.
The NetLetter has been fortunate enough to have our readers donate vintage Trans-Canada Air Lines and Air Canada publications from as far back as 1941 to share with you. These have been scanned and are being prepared for presenting in a special area of the ACFamily Network for archival and genealogy research.
A young man who wanted to avoid the US draft, boarded a TCA aircraft on the ramp at Seattle-Tacoma International airport on July 15th 1954, and finally gave up after terrorizing the lone stewardess on board. The man was hoping to fly to Africa. The stewardess, Isobel Abraham of Vancouver, was uninjured as she ran down the aisle and off the aircraft despite two shots fired in her direction. The man tossed his gun out the door before emerging with hands up. On striking the ground, the gun fired, but hit nothing. (Spokane Daily Chronicle July 15th 1954) Reported in the Glasgow Herald published on July 19th 1962 was an incident involving an emergency Viscount aircraft at Gander after the nose wheel failed to lower. After circling for 3 hours, the landing, by Capt. William Gwynne, was on a foam covered runway with no injuries. The flight was en-route YUL-St. John's via Gander.

Marg Cloutier, Ground Hostess, Winnipeg poses with the TriStar following its landing in Winnipeg February 18th for a series of cold-weather tests. More than 2000 employees, Canadian subcontractors, and the general public visited the aircraft during its three day stay. Temperatures ranged between minus 12 and minus 30 degrees.

Queen's Diamond Jubilee EIIR Flypast and practices

On 19 May 2012, the RAF Hawks performed a tricky EIIR formation in the sky over Windsor Castle. They began practicing for this on May 7, 2012 in Wales. This video is filmed from the perspective of "Ruby 4" - at the lower half of the loop of the 'R'. I hope you enjoy watching it.

Every week we ask our readers for their stories or feedback on what they have read here in previous issues. Below is the feedback we have received recently. Jean Downie is trying to get the record straight by sending this message: I previously submitted the names of some crew members in the photo "Crew Rest" in NetLetter 1201. You certainly got them in the order I submitted them, in the written article, but unfortunately in the photo in this most recent edition, some of the names have been attached to the wrong people! The fourth person is Cathy Gass, but her name has been placed over Girl number three, and Elizabeth Tothe's Name has been placed over the child of the First officer!!! Just wanted to clarify this, I know that you have lots to do! Thanks for your hard work to help keep us in touch. Jean Downie(So we will try again - eds) . Ken Pickford picked up this error in the story regarding the DC8 hijack mentioned in NetLetter nr 1204: In the item on the 1971 DC-8 hijacking from YYC, you refer to its stop in "Grand Falls". Should read "Great Falls" (Montana). Larry Gordon sends us this information: Greetings from Halifax! I particularly enjoyed the story about CP Canso CF-CRR (RCAF S/N 9767) in Netletter #1204. My Dad, Ralph Gordon (1917-2005), was a pilot with 162 B.R. Squadron (RCAF) at Yarmouth, NS in 1943. Interestingly, I have his original Log Book which confirms that he flew several operational sorties in this aircraft. I'm sure he would have been amazed to learn that this aircraft was still flying! Captain Larry Gordon Air Canada (Retired) And Clare Ash refers to the same article as Larry and sends this information: On looking over NetLetter 1204 had special interest in the Canso item from Dennis Baxendale as I too was based in YPR - Prince Rupert and did a number of OD-10's (load sheets) for the Canso. I thought you might be interested in identifying those in the photo left to right: Capt Dennis Baxendale, Charles (Charlie) E. Burtch, Traffic Clerk; unknown maintenance man, ? Harper, Engineer; kneeling First Officer Denny Denman, Lou Birchall - Dispatcher Dennis has done a great job in putting this together. Regards Clare

Terry's Trivia and Travel Tips - by Terry Baker

Change in United Airlines ZED. We have been notified by United Airlines that with an effective date of June 1st, they will no longer be able to continue to offer the Partner Travel for ZED (Zonal Employee Discount). This means that the ZED agreement will no longer permit our employees to be accompanied by travel partners on UA and vice-versa. Employees, spouse and children will still be able to travel on UA; as will unaccompanied parents.

As we surf the internet and back issues of airline magazines we regularly find airline related jokes and cartoons. Below is our latest discovery.
During the late 1970s, a Royal Air Force "Belfast" strategic freighter approached on final to Chicago O'Hare. (What's a Belfast? Read on!)
Callsign: "Ascot 1234."
Ascot 1234: "Chicago tower, Ascot 1234."
Chicago: "Ascot, say your aircraft type."
Ascot 1234: "Ascot 1234 is a Belfast."
Chicago: "Uhhh, what in heck's a Belfast, Ascot?"
Ascot 1234: "It's a big 4-turboprop freighter - bit like a pretty C-132."
Chicago: "O.K., Ascot, you're cleared to continue behind the landing 737. Do you have that visual?"
Ascot 1234: "Ascot 1234, affirmative to continue."
United 123: "Chicago Tower, this is United 123."
Chicago: "United 123 Chicago, you're cleared to continue behind the landing Belfast."
United 123: "The landing what?"
Chicago: "United 123, don't you know a Belfast when you see one?"
Chicago (and United) could be forgiven for not knowing what in heck a Belfast was: Only 10 were ever built. But we (53 Squadron, Royal Air Force) flew them all round the world, and we loved 'em...
