ZIP launches service to Regina. ZIP announce the addition of service to Regina
with daily non-stop service to Vancouver beginning July 5.
Electronic “luggage locators” are a no-go for travel. Transport Canada has
advised all airlines that the use of electronic “luggage locators” are not
recommended on the exterior of any bag. Until further notice, customers will be
required to remove the electronic devices from all bags prior to check-in.
Customer can place the device on the inside of their checked or carry-on
baggage or on their person. Transport Canada requested that airlines advise
customers that the devices have not yet been approved by Transport Canada and
must not be activated. Transport Canada is evaluating the “luggage locator” and
will provide an update shortly.

Manama - Gulf Air has made history with the appointment of two women pilots
- the first airline in the region to do so.
With this appointment, the door is now open for Gulf women to train as
pilots and join the international airline, Gulf Air officials said yesterday.
The appointment of French national Caroline Le Cann and Belgian Florance
Delorme opens a new era for aspiring women pilots to take to the skies,
said Gulf Air vice-president operations Captain Hameed Ali.
Applicants will be selected following strict criteria and enrolled in a
vigorous training programme to bring them on par with international pilots.
'We hope that this appointment opens the door for Gulf nationals to join
Gulf Air as lady pilots and to be part of our multi-national world class
flight group,' said Capt Hameed.
'We also expect more women pilots to join the airline over the next few
months, subject to meeting Gulf Air's requirements with regards to strict
safety, training and hours' experience on the types of aircraft we
operate, he said.
Le Cann is flying the Boeing 767 aircraft for Gulf Traveller, the airline's
all-economy full service division based in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Delorme is
flying the A330 for Gulf Air.
Le Cann brings a wealth of experience to her new position with Gulf
Traveller. She has been flying since the age of 15 and obtained her Private
Pilot's Licence (PPL) on her 17th birthday. After completing her schooling,
she went on to study mathematics and physics at university before taking up
an ab initio course at British Aerospace Flight Training in Prestwick in
the UK.
With 300 hours flying time, she graduated with a Commercial Pilot's Licence
and an Instrument Rating.
Her first position was with Britannia Airways, the biggest charter airline
in the UK, where she started service on the Boeing 757 before flying the
Boeing 767-200 and 767-300 aircraft on short and medium haul routes to
European holiday destinations. She has also flown charter flights carrying
Haj pilgrims to Jeddah.
Gulf Air president and chief executive James Hogan said he was delighted to
meet Caroline and welcome her to the team. 'As a new initiative, this is a
significant first for Gulf Air,' he said.
'However, more importantly, I hope this appointment will encourage young
women around the region to consider the airline industry as an interesting
and fulfilling career opportunity.
'We have outstanding training facilities and a range of programmes,
including a world-class ab initio pilot training programme based in
Bahrain.

Robert Milton is writing a book to tell his side of Air Canada's wild ride,
from its battle for control with Onex Corp. in 1999 to its current
restructuring under protection from creditors.
In the book, to be released in September under the title Straight from the
Top: The Truth About Air Canada, the airline's controversial chief executive is
promising a behind-the-scenes look at the country's largest airline during a
volatile period in the industry.
"It's partly a memoir and it's partly a look at how to manage a company in an
industry that's going through extremely difficult times, both nationally and
internationally," said Susan McIntosh, spokesperson for publisher Greystone
Books.
Just 18 days after Milton's appointment as chief executive in August, 1999,
Onex, a conglomerate controlled by Gerry Schwartz, made a surprise offer to buy
and merge Air Canada and Canadian Airlines.
Air Canada faced a downturn in the aviation industry after the terrorist
attacks in the United States in 2001. The airline has been operating under
bankruptcy protection since last April.
McIntosh said the publisher approached Milton about writing a book and signed
the deal last year. She said writer John Reynolds has been working with Milton
and the book is largely completed. "He's an interesting guy and it's an
interesting story."
Milton's critics suggested he has a flair for fiction, if not fantasy.
"Four of the five years before he took over we made money and after that it
was one losing year after another, and it was always someone else's fault,"
said Richard Nolan, a vice-president of the Air Canada component of the
Canadian Union of Public Employees.
"Knowing the way he has run the airline, he can only be a good author," said
Gary Fane of the Canadian Auto Workers union.
Milton's profits from the book are to be donated to Dreams Take Flight, an
organization of Air Canada volunteers who organize trips for physically,
mentally or socially challenged children.
