. Need to know.
Air Canada news -
Your Personal Pension Statements As Of December 31, 2001. Air Canada's
annual pension statements are designed to provide employees with personalized
information on their retirement benefits, and are usually distributed each year
in June. In fact, employees participating in an Air Canada pension plan are
receiving their statements now. The pension statements for former Canadian
Airlines employees, however, are being modified to mirror the format of Air
Canada's pension statements. Due to the extensive programming changes required,
employees who participate in a Canadian Airlines pension plan will only receive
their personalized statement later this summer. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause.

Matt Laubitz sends this information -
Since we planned to travel to Florida for the 4th of July celebrations, we
were very interested in the AVIS information you provided in Netletter No. 701.

We registered and followed all the steps you suggested. After describing our
request, a price of $ 80.00 was quoted, by the time we worked our way to the
bottom of the reservation this initial price had now become $ 262.52 which is
over $80.00 higher than what we were able to secure from another major rental
car company without the AC corporate rate.
Just thought some other members might be interested. - We were able to canvass
4 other rental companies within 15 minutes over the phone, receiving very clear
pricing in each case.We gave up getting through on the telephone to Destina.ca
and are still waiting to be contacted by them in response to our request we
left on their site, in which they promise contact no later than the following
day within the hours of 10 a.m.- 8 p.m.
Our recommendation would be to do price shop first with other companies before
getting a quote from AVIS, they may or may not be a good deal ! And bring lots
of patience and time in case you need to call Destina.ca.
Greetings from heat wave stricken GTA. Fortunately we live in Mississauga and
our garbage is getting picked up.

When travelling in Europe, don't forget they now use euros in the following
countries -
Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg,
Holland, Portugal and Spain. Presently one euro is worth approx. ca$1.42

. Air Canada news -
Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) Save Lives. It is estimated that many
lives could be saved if automatic external defibrillators (AED) were more
widely available at the time of an emergency. Air Canada recently proved the
theory true when we used an on-board AED to help save a customer’s life. En
route to London Heathrow, AC 8056 was diverted to St. John’s on May 17 when a
56-year-old passenger went into cardiac arrest. Thanks to the efforts of the
crew, on-board medical experts and the AED, the patient was later released from
a St. John’s hospital. Air Canada is currently in the process of installing
AEDs on our aircraft, beginning with the A319 and A320 fleet.

. Remember when!
From the November 1946 issue of Between Ourselves, which had been saved all
these years by Reg Watkins, and sent  to us by Jim Pearce.
A picture of the staff at Goose Bay included this list of members -
Padre Ross, Carl Werbisky, Cab Cole, General Hamilton, Fatboy Tribe, Swifty
Millar, Bady Affleck, Cass Brown, Pop Farmer and Flatspin Irwin. The photo was
taken by Jet Cotton.

(Had the passengers known some of the christian names they may not have
travelled - eds)

Mel Brown provided a dialogueof happenings at Goose Bay, part of which is -
" ... the most important item, at least to us, is the routing of two
eastbound and two westbound Lancs each week "
" ...Ham Hash: Charlie Mackie has his rig on the air, VE2SZ portable VO6, and
claims he can work anybody, anytime, anyplace, any band and has stacks of QSO
cards to prove it."

. Vesta, our chief pilot,  found this information -
BRITISH QUARANTINE DROPPED FOR CANADIAN, U.S.PETS
The British government says it intends to lift the six-month quarantine
it imposed on Canadian and American pets entering Britain.

It sounds like a great concept for
a new toy: a laser-powered paper airplane. But
scientists at the Tokyo Institute of Technology
have bigger ideas in mind, like tiny, unpiloted
airplanes powered by laser beams from the ground
that can endlessly observe volcanoes or monitor
climate. In the longer term, they say, laser
beams from satellites or high-altitude balloons
may perhaps propel planes at several times the
speed of sound at high altitudes where the air
is too thin for jet engines to operate.

. Star Alliance news -
Lufthansa retired its B747 Classic passenger aircraft earlier this year.
Five were placed in long term storage at Marana in Arizona. 3 were sold to
subsiduary Lufthansa Technik for spares, 2 of them were subsequently scrapped
at Hahn during January. The third, D-ABYM has found a new home at the Technik
Museum Speyer. Final flight for D-ABYM was to Karlsruhe/Baden from Frankfurt in
January to be stripped of all useful spares and shipped by Rhine River barge to
Speyer. After re-assembly  it will be exhibited at the museum, which is located
96 kms south of Frankfurt.
SAS passengers can now obtain detailed transfer and rebooking information
aboard the aircraft. The information is provided on the cabin video monitors.

. Iris scanning -
Frequent flyers are now able to pass through Heathrow arrivals in the blink
of an eye using the new iris scanning technology which identifies people from
the unique patterns in their eyes.  Trials have begun at terminals 3 & 4 using
the scanners on a select group of 2,000 British Airways and Virgin Airways
customers who are frequent flyers with the airline.

. May Day.
My wife and I are planning to visit Portugal next spring. We would like to
rent a home, apt. or condo type facility for approximately 3 - 4 weeks. Does
anyone in the Air Canada family have any suggestions or information on good
deals that would help in our plans? Any info on Portugal would be
gratefully received. Thanking you in advance for your help.
