. Need to know.
Canadian Passport Information. If your passport is issued in your maiden
name, but you want your married name added as an observation, you are asked to
submit your passport, a letter requesting this option, and your marriage
certificate or supplementary identification issued in your married surname to
your local Passport office. The fee for this option is $12 Cdn. It is
recommended to apply for a new passport if your current passport is issued with
a previous married name. For more information, visit www.ppt.gc.ca.

US Immigration User Fee Increase Effective May 1. The Immigration and
Naturalization Service has advised Air Canada that the Immigration user fee
will increase from the current fee of $6 to $7 US. The fee, in effect since
1987, applies to all passengers arriving in the U.S. and will continue to be
payroll deducted.

Standby Travel And Your Luggage Ask The Check-In Agent. Since our security
procedures are confidential, ask the Check-in Agent for clarification if you
have any concerns about the routing and standby status of your and your
partner’s luggage.

A new parking policy has been announced effective 01 MAY for the YVR
Operations Centre.
The main impact to retirees would be the cancellation of a long standing
policy which allowed retirees of CP to park free of charge at the Ops Centre
when they were
travelling.
The new policy, as announce this morning reads as follows:
Retiree’s Parking Air Canada retirees providing services may park in
all designated blue sections on a day-to-day basis,
as required, and will be provided with a blue day pass
valid for that day only by Security. Long term parking or parking while
travelling will be unavailable until further notice.
We want to make sure that there are no nasty surprises for retirees who have
been leaving their cars overnight, only to find they have been towed on their
return.

. Air Canada news -
Air Canada News:
New Low Fare Carrier ZIPs Into Marketplace. ZIP, an independently operated,
wholly-owned subsidiary of Air Canada was officially introduced this morning at
a news conference in Calgary. ZIP will build on Tango’s success in responding
to growing customer demand for low-fare service, and will allow Air Canada to
dramatically reduce our costs. ZIP will be headquartered in Calgary, and will
initially begin operations between Vancouver and Calgary this summer, growing
to serve additional markets across Canada and into the U.S. within its first
year. Its fleet will consist of six B737-200s, eventually expanding to 20, all
from the existing Air Canada fleet. ZIP’s look reflects the confidence,
enthusiasm and friendliness that will be a key part of the ZIP customer service
experience. Details about the first date of ticket sales, fares, and the first
scheduled flight will be released at a later date.

******** CANADIAN TRAVEL SITE ALMOST UP **********
Destina.ca today announced significant progress in its preparations for
public launch in the coming weeks, including the appointment of its
management team, the conclusion of an agreement with Air Canada's Aeroplan
division establishing an exclusive frequent flyer partnership, and the
successful completion of two internal test phases.
Destina.ca, Canada's newest online travel site, will offer customers
one-stop travel shopping, reservation and destination information services.
The establishment of the enterprise was announced on September 6, 2001, as
was the appointment of Lise Fournel as President and CEO of Destina.ca.
After two successful test phases - one internally and a second with a
limited client and supplier group - Destina.ca has now moved to a limited
customer test phase involving 5,000 on-line customers.
Destina.ca is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Air Canada and will operate
Canada's newest online travel site offering low prices and one-stop access
to 450 airlines, 53,000 hotels and 52 car rental agencies. Destina.ca will
be the only online travel site to reward all purchases with Aeroplan miles.
Destina.ca will also offer its customers a personalized web experience and
fully bilingual customer care to assist with all online purchases 24 hours
a day, seven days a week.

. Remember when.
From the October 1946 issue of Between Ourselves, which had been saved all
these years by Reg Watkins, and sent to us by Jim Pearce,

Sept 16th saw commencement of Trans-Canada Air Lines service between the
Canadian Lakehead cities of Port Arthur - Fort William and Duluth in Minnesota.
Operated with 10 passenger Lockheed 14-08 equipment. Crew assigned to the route
was made up of -
Capt. Bill Loftus, F/O Harry Tindale and Stewardess Mary Anne Charbonneau.

During the Jubilee Celebrations at Vancouver, a Lancastrian that flew from
Prestwick stayed for 2 days, providing courtesy flights before flying back to
Montreal.

(Articles appearing in the early 'Between Ourselves' were updates from various
cities - eds)
From Dorval Airport (in part) -
During the summer months, we wrestled with the new schedule, which gave us
all the west bound DC-3's. At the end of July, a 5 hour major power failure,
and DC-3's were arriving in close succession and with only one passenger stand
to serve them.
Reconstruction of the apron in from of Hangers nr 1 and 5 to accommodate
heavier aircraft is causing Maintenance Department troubles.
Cargo Department under Scotty, Cam and Bert welcomed Barney Lefebvre and
Curley Dubec.
Commissary, under Madame Chauret, have added Misses Donais, Lucking,
Drouin and Coutois.
(Now get this one! - eds)
Plusses please note - space east of Montreal is very, very poor at present.
However, if you get this far, we can usually put you in the Dorval Inn at the
airport for a night or two at $1.00 per night. This comes as a pleasant
surprise these days, when $4.00 to $5.00 a day is not an uncommon charge for a
hotel room.

In NetLetter nr 680, Don Palmer sent his information on the Stranraer and
mentioned
two guys from the Pacific Western era who Stuart Russell would like to contact,
and
sent us some information -
Ever see a Lockheed Hercules C130 / L100 with a broken back??
Pacific Western was the first commercial operator in Canada 1966/1984
and flew 5 of them 90,000 hours and 26 million miles into 108 countries
around the globe carrying humanitarian supplies and supporting the
development of frontier projects in some of the most amazing places.
This one was in 1974 on a floating iceberg weather station called T3.
I believe N921NA flew for both Interior Airways & Alaska Intl Airways ex
Fairbanks.
She was one of the many US registered Hercs that PWA wet leased in during
the busy high arctic Spring break-up stockpiling airlift for all of the oil
exploration rigs.
Sure looks cold and lonely don't you think?? She was repaired & flew another
day.
The PWA Herc crews will be some of the attendees at the reunion in Calgary
in Aug.
Should be fun. Thanks again.
Cheers Stu
(Stuart will probably place the picture in the photo gallery www.acfamily.net -
eds)

. Found by our chief pilot - Vesta -
Star Alliance news -
BBC -- Guide dogs will be given flight training to make journeys easier for
blind travellers. The
scheme will help dogs acclimatise to the sights smells and sounds of flying.
Owners will then be able to keep the dogs with them when they are travelling by
plane. Ken Weinling, 54, chairman of the Hillingdon branch of Guide Dogs in
London said the initiative would help "open up access for air travel to guide
dog owners". The scheme, being run by BMI British Midland, gives the Guide Dogs
for the Blind Association eight free flights a year on which to train guide
dogs.

'DRIVE-BY DOWNLOADS' SPREADING THROUGH INTERNET
Pop-up advertisements on Web sites are becoming even more intrusive with
a new tactic - the pop-up download.

YAHOO, EXCITE CHANGE POLICES TO SELL CLIENT NAMES, E-MAILS
Internet companies, such as Yahoo and Excite, have altered their privacy
policies in order to sell access to their subscriber lists.

. Still more info on the Stranraer -
This time from Rex Terpening -
Like all of the rest of the gang, after a lifetime in the business, we are
just as interested as ever! Like many, I'm long retired (from the maintenance
ranks). Five years with the old Western Canada Airways‹which became CP when the
railroad became interested in aviation in 1940‹then CP/CAI until I retired in
'78.
Recent comments from Stranny driver noted. For those who may be interested in
some history of one of those fine, old aircraft please check the CAHS Journal,
Issue 39/2, Summer 2001. This contains an excellent story, plus many historic
fotos of CF-BXO, the last Stranny to operate on the Pacific Coast (or anywhere
else, for that matter). She is now comfortably retired at the RAF Museum,
Hendon. Take a read (you'll enjoy it!).  And as a small note of correction the
engines that replced the "Peggies" were Wright R1820's of 1200 HP (the same
engine that was used in many of the Lodestars.2400 HP and a couple of
Hydromatic props) I can well-believe the 7 second take-off. Scarcely time to
say "V1/V2"eh!
Regards to all. Rex Terpening

. Smilies.
Airline names -
BOAC was actually a plea for postwar tourists to Bring Over American Cash.
Some questioned the use of that cash, stating that one particular West
Indian carrier
was Britian's Worst Investment Abroad. However 'meeter & greeters' just
wonder But Will
Ever Arrive. (BWIA)
Finally, lets not forget a famous multi-coloured airline that went through
several
reincarnations Bankrupt Repeating And Never Insuring Full
Financing.(BRANIFF)

Gord Dalziel sends this one -
An airliner was having engine trouble, and the pilot instructed the
cabin crew to have the passengers take their seats and get prepared
for an emergency landing.
A few minutes later, the pilot asked the flight attendants if everyone
was buckled in and ready.
"all set back here, captain," came the reply, "except the lawyers are
still going around passing out business cards."
