standby travel and Employee Travel sent us this -

Air Canada Pionairs Working On Delivery Plan For Horizons.
The Air Canada Pionairs, Air Canada and Harling Marketing Inc. (the contracted
distribution company) are working on a plan to allow retirees to subscribe to
Horizons until the Company’s financial position allows us to mail it to active
employees and retirees. To ensure retirees don’t miss any issues of Horizons
while the subscription service is being finalized, Air Canada will mail the
March and April issues to retirees’ homes. A subscription form will be sent
along with the next pension pay stubs, and is also available on the Pionair
website at www.pionairs.ca, the Horizons website at www.achorizons.ca and
in the
April issue of Horizons.
Industry News:
Schiphol Airport In Amsterdam Introduces Airport Security Charge. According to
Aviation Daily, effective April 1, Schiphol Airport will introduce an airport
security charge of EUR4.40 ($3.87 US) for passengers boarding in Amsterdam.
Transit passengers will be charged EUR1.60 ($1.40 US). This charge is the
result of significant security cost increases since Sept. 11.
Employee Travel & Recognition have been asked by Air Canada Regional to try to
divert calls currently going to Diane Schaffer in the Air BC Employee Travel
office to the Employee Travel & Recognition offices in YVR. Diane is happy to
continue to speak with retirees of ACR, however is not always able to assist
mainline retirees with their specific needs.

The following is a short synopsis of the AC Pension Plan-Canada meeting
held March 12, 2002 in YUL.
The meeting covered the 4th Quarter results and year end for 2001. Also
review and approval of employee retirements and departures from Nov.
01,2001 to Jan. 31, 2002.
Members in attendance were: Chair, Susan Welscheid, V.P. People; Paul
Garrett, V.P. Financial Planning & Controller; Bill Bredt, V.P.
Safety,Security & Environment (new AC appointee); Caroline Drouin, Director
Pensions & Employee Benefits; Karen Strachan, IAMAW-Finance (YWG); Bruno
Giulio, CUPE (YYZ); Pierre Lauzon, CAW (YUL), and by phone from YVR, Doug
Elrick, Deputy Secretary,Air Canada Pension Committee. Absent was Paul
Letourneau, V.P. & Corporate Secretary.
Giles L'Abbe, President Pensions Investments, presented the 4th Quarter and
full year 2001 results.
The year 2001 was marked by falling equity markets and decreasing fixed
income yields. However an upswing in the markets during the 4th Quarter
results in a Master Trust(includes Pilots) return of 8.9% and only a -0.1%
loss for the year. This was well ahead of the benchmark (funds having over
$1 Billion invested) of 8.3% and -3.4% respectively.
The four year total fund return of 9.8% compares advantageously to the
median of Billion$ funds of 7.5% and very comfortably ahead of the
benchmark group at 7.6%. We have consistently been the #1 fund out of 28
'over-$-billion-funds' for the past 5 years.
Nonetheless the effects of the declining markets and fall out from Sept. 11
was costly to the Master Trust. We fell in value from $6.26 Billion at Dec.
31, 2000 to $6.01Billion at Dec. 31,2001. To give emphasis to the effects
of swings in the market, at Sept. 30, 2001, the value of the fund stood at
$5.6 Billion. Active, astute equity management during a period of high
market volatility has resulted in a very favourable recovery and only a
marginal loss for the year.
A quick review of the various components of the funds are as follows:
EQUITIES..... 4th quarter growth of 13.5% was not enough to offset the
decline earlier in the year. 2001 results vs 2000 were -4.2% but much
better than the benchmark of -9.5%. World equity markets for the year were
down anywhere from -12 to -25% vs Canadian declines of -12%. The growth we
enjoyed during the last quarter was almost entirely in Canadian equities.
Our equity split was 77% Canadian and 23% Foreign(includes U.S.). In
anticipation of stronger Foreign vs Canadian growth in 2002 this will
change to 70/30 for about 62.4% of the total fund and a target of 64.7
eventually.
FIXED INCOME..... Showing a growth of 2% for the quarter but 7% for the
year we performed well ahead of benchmarks. Fixed Income is 36.8% of the
total fund and will be reduced to around 34.5% in 2002.
REAL ESTATE.... Growth of 6.9% for the quarter and 13% for the year we
again out-performed the benchmark group. Real Estate is .8% of the total fund.
The merging of assets ($) of CAIL Pension funds with the assets ($) of Air
Canada's Master Trust Fund should be almost completed by the end of March.
Investment costs should be reduced considerably and purchasing power
enhanced. A review of the various fund managers is underway to ensure we
have the best available for the investment task ahead. The combined value
of the new Master Trust Fund will be about $8.3 Billion. We are talking
assets ONLY. THERE IS NO MERGING OF BENEFITS. Each plan has it's own
benefit scale and there are no plans to change this.
I had mentioned in my last report that the Pension Committee meetings were
reduced to 2 this year. However upon further consideration we decided upon
4 meetings, one of which would be by phone, probably in Dec.
Of interest might be the declaration that employee contributions this year
will garner a 4% interest rate.
I continue to think we need more interaction at these meetings and a great
opportunity to put forward ideas for change/improvements. To that end I
tabled with Susan Welscheid and Caroline Drouin the CN Pension organization
and they will do some research with W. Mercer & Co. for further discussion.
District Directors are getting pension queries from CAIL retirees.There are
7 Pension plans from the former CAIL organization. This presents a rather
large challenge. There is a need to communicate with the CAIL retirees and
I have had some discussion with Doug Elrick, who is now in charge of CAIL
Pension Administration to this end. While this is beyond my scope of
duties/mandate I'll nonetheless pass on developments as they occur. Doug's

This is my last report before the AGM in YHZ and I would like to again say
how much I enjoyed representing you. Should you have questions please
contact me. As you are aware a process for electing a representative
involving all retirees is underway. You'll be hearing more from Fraser on
this subject and direct mailings from AC outlining the new process will go
to all AC Retirees. My term of office ends with the forthcoming AGM but
I've indicated to Fraser a willingness to stand again at the pleasure of
the group.

people all of the place -- from Halifax to Victoria. We were contacted
by fifteen men and fifteen women representing a range of jobs and
experience in the airline. We are still looking for people to interview

bit of their time talking to us.

. Air Canada News:
Air Canada Secures $60 Million US Heavy Maintenance Agreements. Recently,
we announced a five-year, $60 million US agreement for
the comprehensive maintenance and repair of Atlantic Coast Airlines’ fleet
of Canadair Regional Jets (CRJs). The contract came into effect Feb. 22. This
agreement comes six months after Atlantic Coast Airlines awarded a 16-year,
$285 million US contract to Air Canada Technical Services for the maintenance
and repair of components for its Canadair Regional Jet fleet. Maintenance work
will be performed at our Dorval Maintenance Center located in Montreal.
Atlantic Coast Airlines’ CRJ fleet is expected to grow to at least 96 aircraft
by the end of 2003.

. Those North Stars!

Joe Gulyes sends this memory -
Further to the North Star Saga, and there are thousands, noticed a small input
from my esteemed old friend Ray Bicknell, who has a catalogue memory of
performance details of the old girl. Flew as Ray's F/O quite a few times just
prior to the retirement of the Noisy Star.
Little known, but on Dec 1, 1960, Ray and I happened to be the first flight to
operate into the new terminal building at Dorval when it opened.
We were doing a Montreal-Toronto -Montreal turnaround flight late in the
evening of November 30,1960, scheduled to arrive back at Montreal after
midnight on Dec. 1st. Didn't give it much thought at the time as there was a
Viscount flight departing slightly ahead of us to Montreal with a stop at
Ottawa, being driven by another well-known polester, Jack Parnham.
To our surprise, as we trundled up to the new terminal, no Viscount!! Plenty of
Press and flashbulbs, and Ray and I made the front page of the Gazette next
morning. Rather fitting, the old girl (#206) shortly to retire, proverbially
chuffing her way up to the gate 23 area as the first one in.
Appears, during a rush turnaround at Ottawa, during startup, the old power cart
was positioned under the Viscount's wing flaps, and not removed before flaps
were selected as part of the after start checklist, resulting in a very
embarrassed crew. Not to mention Incident/Accident Reports.
Another fact is that the Canadair North Star operated under a special Flight
Permit with TCA, rather than the usual Certification. This created some
problems for subsequent purchasers of the fleet, details of which are now
getting shrouded in the mists and memory of time.
Following the retirement of the North Star, and a brief period with Nordair, I
ended up for a few years flying around the Med and North Africa in the RAF. Saw
several Argonauts operated by Air Malta, and sundry other carriers,
destinations into Africa, out of Brussels, cargo unknown!
Just another anecdote from - Ret'd Captain Joe Gulyes. Think I'll join Bick in
Mexico. My bones could use some of the warmth via Tequila/Lime.

Okanagan Districts Ramada Valentine’s Lunch Feb. 14, 2002
62 Pionairs and Guests attended our Valentines AGM & Luncheon however we were
between elections so there were no elections held.
We did however have one resignation of our executive. And we wish to thank Joe
Cormier our Social Director for his past efforts in a job well done and well
appreciated. We wish him luck in his future endeavors.
The Ramada Inn supplied their usual great luncheon of Tomato Juice, Salad,
Chicken Breast with Veggies and Pan Baked Potatoes. The desert was Apple Pie
with Ice Cream.
All the ladies received a red Carnation, and a chocolate heart for everyone.
There was a cash Bar available for beer, wine, hard liquor & Digestives.
Our guest speaker was scheduled to be our National President, Fraser
O’Shaughnessy however his wife fell ill, and his spot was amiably filled by Ed
Storie 2nd. Vice president and National Membership Director.
Prizes were supplied and won by the following.
1 Donated by Lisa Hartman of Interline Plus, (Vancouver) a vest was won by
Bernice Horsman of Penticton.
2. Also donated by Lisa Hartman another vest, it was won by Evelyn Simpson of
Summerland.
3. A gift certificate from Ramada Inn for use in Miki’s Pub won by Marti
Mitchell.
4. A Pionair gift certificate for our next function was won by Mary Armitage.
5. Lisa Hartman also gave away $25.00 Gift Certificates good towards your next
trip.
6. A bouquet of Carnations was won by Dolores Keating
A 50/50 Draw was held and the same person won all three draws, that’s got to be
some kind of record. The tickets were drawn by three different people from
three different tables, so it was legitimate.

for a 50th year Rosemount High School (YUL) class reunion:
Audrey Eccles, (maiden name, married name might be Macdonald) Flight
Attendant for TCA starting in the in the late 50's or early 60's. Attended
Rosemount High School 1952 to 55, attended McGill, lived in NDG possibly on
Terrebonne Street, lived in Dorval, was flight attendant out of Dorval in
the 60's and Toronto or Calgary or Vancouver .
Rosemount High School Reunion (YUL) to celebrate 50 years since it opened
will be held on Saturday May 18th. at the High School.12 of the 13 girls in
the "latin " class have been contacted. Audrey is the last one.
