. From Linda Reverchon
Subject: Oops!
Just a gentle correction to your latest article about the newest European
currency: It's not the "Euro Dollar", it's the "euro", and with no capitol
letter, either.
Also, in France, anyway, the "central bank" (Banque de France) will continue
changing francs into euros for ten years (for banknotes) and three years (for
coins).
Keep up the good work, both of you!

NAV CANADA's Presence in Gander, NFLD
At the heart of oceanic air traffic control
Gander is home to three NAV CANADA facilities: the Area Control Centre
(ACC), Air Traffic Control Tower and International Flight Service Station
(IFSS). All three facilities play a key role in ensuring the safe and
efficient movement of aircraft in domestic airspace and international
oceanic airspace assigned to Canada.
The Gander ACC is responsible for controlling aircraft in the western half
of the north Atlantic oceanic airspace, as well as sharing the control of
Atlantic Canada's domestic airspace with our other ACC in Moncton.
The international airspace over the North Atlantic is divided up into seven
areas. The Gander Area Control Center provides oceanic air traffic control
services on behalf of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO),
from the east coast of Canada to about halfway across the North Atlantic (30
degrees west longitude, between 45 and 65 degrees north latitude). The
Gander Oceanic airspace is bounded to the north by the Icelandic Control
Center, on the east by the Prestwick, Scotland, Control Center, to the south
by the Portuguese control center in the Azores, and finally to the Southwest
by the New York Area Control Center.
The Gander oceanic airspace is the busiest in the world. It falls within the
shortest great circle distance between North America and Europe. Up to 1,000
flights a day transit the airspace - about half eastbound and half
westbound). The vast majority of aircraft are large commercial carriers. In
2000, there were approximately 390,000 aircraft movement in the Gander ACC
airspace. The Gander ACC uses the Gander Automated Air Traffic System to
process all flights within its control area. It is the most sophisticated
system of its kind in the world. The Gander ACC employs some 270 staff, 150
of which are Air Traffic Controllers.
The control tower at the Gander airport handles traffic within a 13-km
radius. It is responsible for controlling aircraft movement within that
control zone - aircraft landing, departing and transiting that airspace up
to an altitude of 3000 feet above ground. It co-ordinates the movement of
all Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) traffic with its control zone. Twelve Air
Traffic controllers work at the tower
The IFSS located at the Gander ACC maintains voice (HF and VHF)
communications with aircraft which fall outside radar coverage (beyond 200
nautical miles from the Newfoundland coastline). Fifty-five Flight Service
Specialists work at the IFSS.

Subject: 22nd Annual Airline Mixed Fun Bonspiel
Back in Netletter 652 was an article inviting participation in the "22nd
Annual Mixed Fun Bonspiel". Being an avid curlers and partygoers, we decided to
try this 'spiel and find out why it had not appeared on our list of parties to
attend. Here is a short follow-up.
Well we have just returned from Kamloops after three days of great partying and
curling (more successful with the former than the latter!). The event
originated as a PWA sponsored 'spiel and has been continued by our new
"brothers and sisters" from Canadian. We enjoyed a fantastic welcome from
everyone. Emphasis is on FUN but the curling was great.
John Calvert and his committee (40 ounce flu clogs the memory for names)
produced a memorable event, hopefully John will contribute more on the history,
and this years results.
I know that there are many curlers in Air Canada. The 'spiel will run again
next year, 7,8, and 9 March at Kamloops. I would strongly recommend that they
get their mixed teams together and try this event, be prepared for some
surprises. No one went home disappointed. I know that we made lots of new
friends.

. TANGO story - so far!
In the few months since it launched two-plane service to eight
Canadian cities and three Florida destinations Nov. 1, Tango has taken
off, attracting enough converts that it's already showing "sustained
profitability," Air Canada president Robert Milton told airline
business analysts in a recent conference call.
It seems that new routes and planes are being added almost daily.
Tango will soon be flying to 23 Canadian cities but has dropped the
Florida destinations because of poor demand. Milton said he remains
"pleasantly amazed" by how well the new service is doing.
By summer, Tango's fleet will be up to 21, accounting for about 10 per
cent of the airline's total domestic capacity, and its potential for
growth appears "limitless," Milton said.
Tango is proving so successful at getting costs down,, its seat-mile
costs are already 25 per cent lower than the mainline carrier,
according to Air Canada,, that the white and purple jets could someday
overtake the familiar white, red and green planes for dominance in the
domestic market. That would leave Air Canada, which lost $1.2 billion
last year and is saddled with $11.7 billion in debt, just serving
"key" cities and international routes.
If Tango appears to have come almost out of nowhere, well, it did.
Air Canada officials had been quietly working on the Tango plan for
months,, many believe in an effort to stop the dramatic growth of
Canada 3000,, along with a proposal for a Western-based discount
airline, now on hold, that was aimed directly at WestJet Airlines.
But a mechanical problem on the mainline last fall forced Air Canada
to put one of the freshly painted Tango planes into service. Air
Canada officials were hurriedly forced to issue a news release
announcing the upcoming Tango launch, for fear travellers would think
Air Canada was changing its aircraft colours.

STUPID PILOT TRICKS PART ... EH, WHATEVER: First, floatplane pilot
Peter Drewery of Nanoose Bay, British Columbia, reported a fuel-related
problem and made an emergency landing on or near Duke Island. The
plane bonked a rock, punching a hole in one float. A volunteer rescue
squad helped patch the float, but it leaked and led to the aircraft
flipping during the subsequent takeoff. Drewery returned with a barge
and crane and recovered the aircraft from 70 feet of water, but raised
the suspicions of the rescue squad, who reported him to local troopers.
When the troopers searched the island, they found four duffle bags
stuffed with marijuana. Drewery was later found wandering the area
looking for something he "forgot." Bail was set at $100,000.
Our chief pilot Vesta found this one!
Subject: Free Haircut
A barber gave a haircut to a priest one day. The priest tried to pay for the
haircut, but the barber refused, saying, "you do God's work." The next
morning the barber found a dozen bibles at the door to his shop.
A policeman came to the barber for a haircut, and again the barber refused
to be paid, saying, "you protect the public." The next morning the barber
found a dozen doughnuts at the door to his shop.
An Airline Pilot came to the barber for a haircut, and again the barber
refused payment, saying, "you fly the public safely all across the world."
The next morning the barber found a dozen pilots waiting for a free haircut
