. Vesta, our chief pilot sends these articles -
Lindbergh's Plane to Be Replicated
AP -- In 1927, Charles Lindbergh's solo New York-to-Paris
flight in the Spirit of St. Louis made him an instant hero
and international celebrity. Seventy-five years later
grandson Erik Lindbergh plans to replicate the flight in
the New Spirit of St. Louis, a modern single-engine plane
with a Global Positioning System, satellite phone and
e-mail capability. With an average cruising speed of
184 mph, Lindbergh expects to complete the trip in
191/2 hours. His grandfather's flight, which had a
cruising speed of 108 mph, took 331/2.
Subject: Subject: : Life in 2002
Let's see if I understand how the world works lately...
If a man cuts his finger off while slicing salami at work or if a
woman boils her groin from a coffee from McDonalds,
they blame the restaurant.
If you smoke three packs a day for 40 years and die of lung cancer,
your family blames the tobacco company.
If your neighbour crashes into a tree while driving home drunk,
he blames the bartender.
If your grandchildren are brats without manners,
you blame their friends and the television.
If your friend is shot by a deranged madman,
you blame the gun manufacturer
And if a crazed person breaks into the cockpit and tries to kill
the pilot at 35,000 feet, and the passengers kill him instead,
the mother of the deceased blames the airline.
I must have lived too long to understand the world as it is anymore.
So, if I die while my old, wrinkled butt is parked in front of this
computer, I want you to blame Bill Gates...okay?

A memory from N.A.Barbour of the Bristol Freighter -
In defence of the Bristol 170 - and I never thought I would come to the
defence of that ugly duckling - it had amazing lifting capability for just
two WW2-vintage piston engines. During a heavily loaded Winnipeg -Toronto
leg (a bit over "21 miles") we had to shut down one of them. In the cargo
bay "down stairs" we carried a complete Super Connie engine, including its
great nacelle, plus TWO complete RR Merlins - with room to spare for a few
"day old chicks" ! We just trundled on like a single-engine Cessna until
able to make a precautionary landing on a gravel strip north of Lake
Superior ('Pagwa'). Captain Ernie North did a superb job, and our greater
problem was fighting off the zillion black flies during our day and a half
there ! After repairs were made, I was most impressed (and very grateful)
that Captain Ernie was able to get the still fully loaded Bristol airborne
off the soft gravel strip - and over pine trees that looked a thousand feet
tall in the windscreen !
Some credit where it's due - from a "sadly uneducated expert".

. Glen Cawker sends this follow up to the story in NetLetter 658 -
Hi!..It's the first time I'd seen Charles Mackie's story. Very well done,
Thanks to all. Incidentally Capt. Dal Woodard 's name doesn't have the second
'w' in it. Dal was killed when flying as a passenger in either Capt. Snyder's
Ste Therese accident or Capt.Pete Hamilton's Toronto 'spoiler' accident. (maybe
you can check it out to determine which)?. Dal had been attending a Flt
Operations ground-school course in Dorval and was going to YYZ on the
week-end.. He was a very short man and always used two very deep/high cushions
on his left seat when Captaining the North Stars. He stored the cushions on top
of his locker at the Dispatch Office, if I remember correctly.
You mentioned the loss of #204 at Mt. Slesse, (Captained by Johnny Clarke) and
that the wreck was 'recently' dicovered. It was discovered very early on and a
memorial has been set up on the mountain for a great number of years. Wasn't
the recently discovered missing A/C that of the Lockheed (Captained by Norm
Pike?) which went missing in the thirties or early fourties? ..Glen

. Smilies.
Heard over the air waves!
And from London tower controller to very senior British Airways
captain:
"Good touchdown, sir, but I believe you were a little left of
centreline."
"Thank you, you’re absolutely right, and my First Officer was a
tad to the right."
And from the Northeast U.S.:
"Mornin’ center, ABC123 Heavy checking in at 12,000 and 250kts
assigned."
"Roger ABC123 Heavy, cross DRESR at 9,000 reduce speed to
210kts."
"Cross DRESR at 9,000 slow to 210, ABC123 Heavy."
From unknown crew...
"Yeah, we have one of those [Cross Dresser] at our company
too."
And from the central U.S.:
"Afternoon approach, ABC123 checking in 10,000 210kts assigned
with Zulu
request 18L."
"Roger ABC123, good afternoon, unfortunately you don’t have
enough seniority to
hold 18L, expect the visual 18R."
And from India, where they use this as a classic example of
'standard
phraseology':
U.S. Fighter pilot to tower: "This is chrome-plated stove pipe,
triple nickel eight
ball, angels eight, five in the slot, boots on and laced, I
wanna bounce and blow.
Tower: "Roger you got the nod to hit the sod".
