From Dave Shaw -
Subject: departure fees Jamaica
For your information I was there in December and the total tax, in cash,
required is $1000.00 Ja or $40.00 Canadian per person
which is of course more than the standby flight charges.
Dave Shaw
Canadians travelling within Dhaka, outside the Gulshan, Banani, and
Baridhara area of Bangladesh should be aware of increased violence and frequent
enforced general strikes. Travel outside of Dhaka should be restricted to daylight
hours.
Brazil-bound Canadians should keep a low profile Canada's temporary ban on imports
of Brazilian beef has resulted in peaceful demonstrations and protests at the
Canadian Embassy and Canadian Consulate General.
Effective February 1, Canadians travelling to Kenya as tourists need a visa.

. Remember when?
In NetLetter nr 562 we told you about 767-233 fin 604 C-GAUN being put into
storage.
Fred Spriggs sends us this comment -
As a matter of interest, if I'm not mistaken, FIN604 is the 767 that
made history when it landed safely at the Gimli, Manitoba, racetrack
(airport)
(Fred's information is correct - eds)

. May Day!
My name is Bruce Allcorn and I flew with TCA from 1951 to 59, some
DC3, but mostly as an F/O Trans-At, on Northstars and Connies then out
of YYZ as a Capt. on Northstars. Seniority # at start of operations 365.
Over the years and flying sundry locations, I have lost track of
everyone from that era, and now that I am trying to compile a book of
events over the half century and I wish to include many lost friends. I
find myself more than embarrassed, not having a good record of my years
with TCA and some great pilots, some of whom still sit on my shoulder.
Mickey Found, Doug Siple Bert Trerrace, Art Anders, to name a few.
In 1995, all my personal possessions were accidentally destroyed,
photos - log books everything! This leads to my quest. Photos from the
50's, Pilot seniority lists, who may be still around that I could
contact.
As my E-Mail would suggest, I spent nearly 25 years flying the Arctic
and Antarctic
but now spend as much time as possible on the Gulf of Mexico with an
address in Mississippi.

Away on Business: Wired at 33,000 feet
For the past few weeks passengers on
a few Air Canada flights in North America have been able to do
something most business travelers have only dreamed of -- send and
receive e-mail and skate across some of the Web. It is a sign of things
to come as the airline industry and earthbound tech companies look for
ways to keep people wired at 33,000 feet. The Air Canada test uses existing
seat-back telephones on the plane to which a laptop can be connected. With
software put in place ahead of time, the passenger can access a server
on the plane that intermittently sends and receives data, refreshing cached
news and securities quotes, for instance, and sending and receiving e-mail.

. Found on the internet.
"A Jumpseat Named Desire" by Ken Cubbin.
Jumpseating -- the practice of bumming a ride aboard a human mailing
tube headed somewhere you need to go -- is one of the time-honored
institutions of the airline industry. Some use their privileges to
commute, others to move around on company business. But, in the
right hands, it's really more of an art. Come along for the ride as
Ken Cubbin tells all in this humorous look at scheduled hitchhiking.

=========
A plane was taking off from Kennedy Airport. After it reached a comfortable cruising
altitude, the captain made an announcement over the intercom,
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking.
Welcome to Flight Number 293, nonstop from New York to Los Angeles.
The weather ahead is good and therefore we should have a smooth and
uneventful flight. Now sit back and relax - OH MY GOD!"
Silence.
Then, the captain came back on the intercom and said,
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so sorry if I scared you earlier, but while I was
talking, the flight-attendant brought me a cup of coffee and spilled the hot
coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!"
A passenger in Coach said, "That's nothing. He should see the back of mine!"
