Reduced carry-on baggage allowance goes into effect in North America. In an
effort to reduce airport security processing times, and in compliance with new
FAA regulations within the U.S., we have revised our carry-on baggage allowance
in North America. Effective Saturday, Oct. 13, customers on all Air Canada
flights in North America are limited to one carry-on bag and one personal item
(i.e. purse, briefcase, laptop, backpack, etc.) in all classes of service.

Air Canada now invites you to "Tango in the Canadian Skies"!

Air Canada officially unveiled the new "Tango by Air Canada". Thirteen Airbus
A320s will be re-painted into the new colour scheme featuring purple tail with
the old-style maple leaf roundel logo. The aircraft also feature the new
website spelled out on the rear fueselage and large "Tango" titles on the lower
forward fuselage
In its press release Air Canada stresses that this is not a new airline,
but a
re-branding of service. The A320s will be used on routes linking Toronto with
Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax. In
addition, Tango will offer non-stop service between Toronto and Ft. Lauderdale,
Orlando and Tampa, as well as non-stop service between Montreal and Ft.
Lauderdale and Orlando. Tickets and reservations go on sale tomorrow (Oct 11th)
for flights beginning on November 1st. The A320s will be re-configured to 159
all-economy seating with 32-inch seat pitch by taking out the current J-class
seating up front (24) and taking out the forward galley area. Passengers will
pay dis- counted fares to fly on this new service, but will pay extra if they
want advance seat reservations, snack service, beverage service, and in-flight
entertainment. Passengers will be able to accumulate Aeroplan frequent flyer
miles on the new services and/or redeem them on AC Tango. Air Canada Tango will
also have its own dedicated phone line at 800-315-1390. All ticketing will be
electronic tickets and sales through travel agents will be commissionable.
The first two A320s have already been painted up and can be seen flying around
the "normal" Air Canada system. They are C-FPWE/FIN402, and C-FMEQ/FIN409.
C-GPWG/FIN401 is currently in the paint shop being re-done.
In other Air Canada news the airline has quietly re-configured all of the
North
American 767-200s from 36J/155Y to 36J/162Y seating. This would be FIN601 to
FIN612. The "overseas" 767-200s have now been converted back to North American
standard (with lower published MTOWs to save on landing fees). They are FIN613
to FIN619 and they have been switched to 36J/162Y configuration as well. We
have also learned that the new A321s coming in November will be configured for
24J/148Y seating.

Sometime ago, during an e mail exchange with Murray Wallace, he sent me the
following. I was doing some hard drive housekeeping the other day and ran
across it and once again got a big kick out of it and thought I may not be
alone in this regard.
Ace McCools first YUL Layover
I can't remember the year, but I think it was in the mid-fifties, when YYZ
based crews had rather long layovers in YUL. In this case we arrived in
mid-afternoon, and left about the same time the next day, and stayed at the
old Mount Royal Hotel.
I had a brand new F/O named Jack Desmarais, later to gain fame as Ace
McCool. He came from Montreal, and on the cab ride into town told me that
he was going to visit his family. For no good reason, I got the idea that
he was going to spend the night, so I gave him explicit instructions about
the crew cab, pick-up time etc. We split in the lobby of the hotel ( in
those days we shared rooms) .
I went up to the room, changed, and called an old 401 squadron buddy, Bruce
Fleming, who had re-enlisted in the RCAF, and done a tour with the USAF in
Korea, and then returned to become a test pilot with Canadair on the F-86,
and later the F-104 program. We got together and started the usual BS
session, and I must admit, had a few.
Bruce had salvaged a huge, king-size french poodle named Bijou from his
marriage (many of you who served at Chatham will remember Bijou) and he
accompanied us on our rounds. Around midnight he delivered me to the hotel
and I suggested a night cap in the Picadilly Lounge, but Bruce said he
couldn't leave Bijou alone in the car. Nothing daunted, I said "There's
nobody in my room", so we led Bijou up the elevator, opened the door,
kicked him into the room, and went down to the Pic.
An hour or so later, after a cognac or two, we went up to the room, opened
the door, and found the future Ace McCool sitting up in bed with Bijou
growling at him, and Ace trying to figure out how this beast got into a
locked room on the 9'th floor of the Mount Royal. Ace had unexpectedly
returned to the hotel, gone to bed, and awoke to find this monster sitting
on his chest in the middle of the night. It turned out he was not fond of
big dogs!
To this day I think Ace thinks it was intentional and one of those
legendary pranks that Captains played on new F/O's.
PS< Thought I would check this out with Jack, not that Murray was ever
guilty of embellishing a story, and Jack says that it is completely true
except that even in his junior days with the company was he naive enough to
think that this was a new F/O trick. He then added but how could you get
mad at guys who could fly like Bruce Fleming and Murray Wallace.

Subject: Inaugural Flight Edmonton Lethbridge
Further to our brief chat at McMorrans on Tuesday. As I mentioned I just
happened to look at a photo of the inaugural flight between Edmonton &
Lethbridge and noted that the date was October 1st 1938. And here we were 63
years plus a day later at a luncheon in Victoria. The aircraft was a Lockheed
10A registration CF-TCA. The crew was Captains Frank Young and Art Rankin.

. John Bosma puts us out of our misery re the first trans-Atlantic flight -
Subject: TransAt
TRAIL OF THE CARIBOU.
Ever heard of it ? Not many Canadians have, yet it is an historic event
that should be more well known. In an earlier Netletter I asked if
anyone knew from where the first TransAt flight in an aircraft, from
Canada (not Newfoundland) originated.
The aircraft was a DeHaviland Dragon 84, named "Trail of the Caribou",
and it took off from Wasaga Beach, Ontario (the world longest fresh
water beach), on Aug. 8. 1934, piloted by two Canadians, James Ailing
and Leonard Reid. After 30 hours 55 minutes they landed at Heston,
Middlesex, England.
