The latest Air Canada tuimetable for download is effective from Aug 28th
thru Apr 6th.
. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -
Air Canada will introduce a new route on September 8th with a once-a-day
CRJ service between Toronto and White Plains NY (HPN). The flight will depart
Toronto in the evening and the aircraft will stay overnight. The westbound
flight departs White Plains at 0600hrs for Toronto. Continental Express
currently operate three Embraer ERJ135s per day on this route. b).. Air Canada
will be terminating its service between Halifax and Newark at the end of the
summer schedule period (Oct 27th) due to poor loads. Earlier this year the
airline had dropped its Halifax-Washington service. c)...on August 28th the
airline announced that it had completed precautionary inspections of the 16
Rolls Royce Trent 700 series engines on its eight A330-300 aircraft.
Inspections have confirmed that the engines are in normal, safe operating
condition and meet the manufacturer's most recent modification
standards.d)...some more changes to schedules for this fall include two CRJs
per day being used between Toronto and Indianapolis which replace the Fokker
F-28s currently being used, new route from Toronto to Melbourne Australia via
Honolulu three days per week, and the Toronto-Kelowna route to be dropped for
the winter effective October 14th. Toronto-San Francisco route drops to three
flights per day from four effective October 14th, but one of them will be
upgraded to a 767 from an A320. On Sep 3rd, the Toronto-Houston route switches
from two 737s per day to two A319s per day and on October 14th the
Toronto-Dallas route will have one 737 and one A319 per day.

Air Canada appears to be reviving plans for a charter carrier at the
same time it prepares to launch its new discount arm and rebrand its
five regional carriers as a single new airline this fall.
The Montreal-based company is studying the feasibility of starting a
long-haul carrier specializing in leisure travel that would compete
with Canada 3000 Inc. and charter airlines such as Air Transat,
sources have told the National Post.
A leisure airline would complement the discount airline Air Canada is
set to launch as early as October.
The discount airline is expected to be named Air Canada Zip, although
the airline has also registered the name Jetz with Industry Canada.
The move would come on the heels of the relaunch Sept. 24 of regional
carriers Air Nova, Air Ontario, Air BC, Air Alliance and Canadian
Regional Airlines. They are expected to fly under the new name Air
Canada Tango, which has also been registered with Industry Canada.
A possible launch date is unknown.
For consumers, the most immediate marketing change at Air Canada will
be the rebranding of Air Canada Regional Inc., the umbrella company
for the five regional airlines.
Nathalie Megann, a spokeswoman for the regionals, said the target date
for unveiling the new name is Sept. 24. She would not confirm or deny
it will be called Air Canada Tango. It has been registered as a
trademark and is a leading contender, sources said.
More immediately, a strike deadline of Sept. 5 has been set by
engineers and mechanics represented by the Canadian Auto Workers
union. Negotiations continue and Ms. Megann said there is a
contingency plan in the event of a disruption.

The Vancouver Island and Gulf Island District held their "up-island' luncheon
at the
Qualicum Heritage Inn on Tuesday Aug 28th.
John Jeffrey emceed a gathering of 72 Pionairs and retirees who had two
choices of
Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding or Sole Almondine for lunch - better than the
usual
two choices of take it or leave it! The group comprised of 11 from Duncan and
south,
17 from the Nanaimo, Ladysmith area, 10 from Comox Valley and the majority
from
Nanaimo, Prksville & Qualicum Beach.
John welcomed everyone, especially the ex-CAIRE retirees.
Terry Baker of the NetLetter was introduced, and spoke of the various
concerns, other than C1/j10, the NetLetter has rceived such as the erroneous
service charges, accounting
for the partner/passes used and reminding everyone that the kiosks must be
used where available to check-in. Brochures and leaflets from Dargal &
Interline plus were also made available.
Bill Wood was introduced and reported on the recent CAIRE golf tournament.
Bob mentioned that the Capt. J.T.Anderson Low Net tournament trophy had been
won by Bob Phillips again! The trouphy is a mounted model of a B747-400 in
Canadian colours.
John next introduced Saville Hambleton who, with his wife Barbara, were
winding down
as National President and Secretary of the Pionairs.
Saville stated that the Island has 400 Pionairs which, together with spouses,
numbered
672. The Pionairs Assistance Program is being launched. The program is
designed to help
Pionairs in the ares of chemical abuse, physical abuse, financial problems,
completion of various form, contracts etc. The 15 districts will have
co-ordinators. During Savilles' tenure,
there has been two very successful AGM's, a data base of all Pionairs has been
established, and a web site strictly for the Pionairs which he encouraged all
who had internet access to view - www.pionairs.ca.
Saville entertained several questions from the floor, particluarly regarding
travel. Mention was made of the recent meeting with Air Canada on specific
problems, and it was suggested that several changes will be made by years end.
It was reported that over 200 people travelling on buddy passes were stuck at
Honolulu.
The next luncheon for the district is scheduled for McMorrans Beach House on
Tuesday October 2nd. Deadline is Sept 27th.

A chance meeting on the golf course at Ottawa between Fred Coyle, Asst
Secy of TCA and R. MacLean Exec. Asst to C.D.Howe was instrumental in an
original piece of memorabilia being added to TCA's historical records
collection. The original scroll was commerorating the inauguration of North
Star service on June 1st 1948.
Windsor Airport goes back to 1920. Trans-Canada Air Lines began operations
there
on August 1, 1940. In 1948 TCA's North Star aircraft were servicing Windor.
1954 saw the introduction of Viscount service followed by Vanguards in
1960
then DC-9 service in 1969.

Terry's travel tips.
Subject: Re: France - Rental Car - sent in by Jean Le Pottier at Paris -
My suggestion re renting a car in Paris is to do the same as I do when I
need to rent a car in Canada/USA .
I phone Avis International Paris , Hertz , Budget , National and question
them as to their rental prices and any specials they might have. I mention
that I am an AC employee and ask for their airline rates .
I have found that their " specials " are usually cheaper then our airline
rates and I make my booking accordingly . Car rental personnel have been
very helpful in counseling and cooperative to date .
A word of advice for Paris , depending on the time of the year , book well
in advance .
