. Need to know.
Travel partners should avoid travel to Europe in August.
Europeans traditionally take their holidays in August, making it an extremely
busy travel period.  Even the largest airports, such as London, Paris and
Frankfurt, are jammed with travellers. Colleagues in London advise that due to
high volumes of revenue traffic, many travel partners originating have been
waiting for a seat home for as long as five days.  Because of the high
likelihood of not getting on a flight and the standby nature of employee and
partner travel, employees should advise their travel partners to avoid European
destinations in August.

Delta Donates Last Lockheed L-1011
The last Lockheed L-1011
widebody aircraft to fly for Delta Air Lines soon will take on
a new role in support of The Flying Hospital, a not-for-profit
airborne medical center and surgical facility. Delta retires its
final L-1011 TriStar today in Atlanta after its last commercial
flight. The retirement ends nearly 28 years of Delta L-1011
service, opening the way for the donation of the aircraft to
support The Flying Hospital organization.

. Robert Milton recently outlined to the employees some of the changes taking
place to help restore Air Canada's bottom line. This is the portion relating to
the fleet -
The Fleet
·We will accelerate the elimination of fuel and maintenance
inefficient aircraft, resulting in a younger fleet overall. ·Twelve
wide-body aircraft will be withdrawn from service by spring 2002. Nine
B767s (6 B767-300s and 3 B767-200s) will be withdrawn by the end of
2001 to offset fleet growth as a result of new aircraft deliveries
(four have already been removed from service). One B747-400 aircraft
will be withdrawn from service in the first quarter of 2002 and two
A340-300 aircraft will be withdrawn in February and May 2002. ·As part
of our renewal program, we will take delivery of 28 new Airbus
narrow-body aircraft between August 2001 and May 2003, including
twelve new A321s, thirteen A319s and three A320s. Thirteen new
wide-body aircraft will be added to the fleet between the second
quarter 2001 and the second quarter 2003, including four B767-300s,
two A340-500s, three A340-600s and four A330-300s. ·Twenty of our 43
B737-200 aircraft are now planned to be moved by year-end 2002 to our
new low-fare airline. Initially, ten B737s will be withdrawn from
service by the end of October 2001 with the remainder of the B737
fleet to be phased out by year-end 2002. In addition, the F28 fleet of
19 aircraft will be phased out by year-end 2002. The replacement of
these and other Air Canada Regional aircraft will follow the
conclusion of new collective agreements with the unions involved. This
fleet standardization will result in cost-savings on flight
operations, and aircraft maintenance and support. ·A fuel management
task force has been formed to look at all aspects of fuel, one of the
highest cost items. It will analyze consumption and investigate our
current operating procedures to determine how savings and better
pricing alternatives can be found, while always adhering to the
highest safety standards.

National Aviation Museum Ottawa
Monday, September 24, 2001

Come join us for a delicious buffet luncheon and visit to the National Aviation
Museum for an all-inclusive price of $25.00.

The National Aviation Museum is one of the finest aviation museums in the
world. Over 120 aircraft chronicle the ancient dream of flight and the
significant part played by Canadians in the development of aviation. Major
themes of aeronautical history are reflected the efforts of pioneering
individuals to build and fly their own aircraft, the many Canadians who flew
the legendary machines of the two great conflicts of the last century, the
birth of air transport, and examples of jet engine technology as well as the
uniquely Canadian experience of bush flying, and the phenomenal growth of the
aviation industry in Canada over the past fifty years

The museum will be closed to the general public on this day, but the large
well-stocked Gift Shop will be open for the Pionairs to shop.  The parking is
plentiful and free. The museum will open at 10:00 o’clock and close at 16:00
with the buffet lunch being served at noon. A bar service will be available.
There is a maximum of 200 places available and the last date to accept
reservations is September 10, 2001.  Cancellations will not be refunded after
September 17, 2001.

The museum is totally accessible. For those in need, the museum has available a
(limited) number of wheelchairs and electric scooters. We want you to come
so, please let us know what your needs are and we’ll do all possible to
accommodate you. Let us know if you require transportation and a lift will be
arranged for you.
Guest Speaker:  Our guest speaker, Mr. Christopher Terry, is the current
Chairperson of the Aviation Museum Group.
Mr. Terry joined The Canada Aviation Museum as its Director General in 1989
and assumed responsibility for the corporate development activities of the
Canada Science and Technology Corp. in 1994. In February 2001 he was appointed

Bored on a long-haul flight? Singapore
Airlines passengers can challenge each other to digital
chess or mahjong and the whole plane can compete in a
digital quiz show. The airline has been testing the games
on select flights since April and plans to launch an
"In-flight Challenge" trivia game on Wednesday during the
airline's inaugural flight to Chicago.

Qantas Has Air New Zealand Plan
Singapore Airlines' hopes
of raising its stake in Air New Zealand were dealt a major
blow Wednesday with Canberra and Wellington appearing to
back plans by Australian carrier Qantas to buy into Air
New Zealand. Australian Deputy Prime Minister John
Anderson said Canberra wanted to "see Qantas not
confronted by a behemoth some time in the future," if
Singapore Airlines were to buy up to 49 percent of ANZ.

Subject: DVT
How come people didn't get deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the olden days when
they sat in a DC-4 or 049 Connie and it took longer to cross the Atlantic
than a jet does the Pacific today? Did the vibration act like a massage?
My second question is, if sitting in one place causes DVT, how come
international pilots don't have it?
Just asking.

Remeber when?
In response to our article in the NetLetter nr 609, capt. Ed Hill sends this
information -
Subject: north shore start-up

Regarding the north shore start -up on Nov.1st,1955 captain Ed Hill was in
the right had seat who at the time was First Officer Hill and the flight was
captained
by capt. Hal Bennum. I received a zippo lighter to commemorate the event
with date and flight path on it. If i remember, we flew the last leg from
Bagottville
around 800 to 1000 feet..the passengers were delighted and so were we. I
still have the lighter by the way and probably should give it to the person
who collects these momentos.
Aircraft CF-TFL, fin nr 212 c/n 136 was the aircraft.

. CF-TCC Update by Alan MacLeod -
Tango Charlie Charlie has completed its schedule through Atlantic Canada.
On the 13th of July Capt. Harvey Reid and I flew
TCC to Moncton. On the 14th the Maritimers descended on the Dreams Take
Flight local gang. The aircraft full all day.

Shortly after noon, as I was stepping from the aircraft, a gentleman
approached and introduced himself. He had his
"flight deck authorization card" in hand. He told me he had seen the
aircraft flying over his house, new exactly what it was and just had to
come and see it. He related the following story.

On Dec. 2, 1941, he had just returned from a cycle (he was a TCA pilot
based in Moncton at the time), and his boss, Chief Pilot , said " go and
get in the right seat of that Lockheed on the ramp. The F/O scheduled for
the trip has not shown up and you're going to Charlottetown and
back".  The aircraft he flew was none other  than TCC.

During 1941 TCA operated two Lockheed 10's to PEI  for nine months.  TCC
had been bought back from the Dept. Of Transport and re entered into
service serving PEI along with TCA. The gentleman was none other then
retired Captain Stu Ruddick. Stu retired in 1965.  Sixty years later he
met up again with Tango Charlie Charlie ! He was very pleased.

July 20th, 21st and 22nd saw the aircraft in Halifax. Capt Ted Dodds flew
and we had an engineer from Winnipeg, name of Jeffry McRae along to help
us. The weather was excellent and TCC flew three trips each day.

Over to Charlottetown for the 28th for one day flying. Capt. Ken Patry and
Jeff McRae, the AME, were on hand. All flights full with a waiting list.
They could have filled the aircraft for two days.

We ferried to St. John on the evening of the 28th to be in position for
the 29th. Another fine day and flights booked to capacity by Marie Jose
Cyr, the DREAMS representative there.  We had one repeat customer, along
with his wife,  Mr. and Mrs. Reg McCallister from Fredericton. This was
there sixth consecutive year supporting Dreams Take Flight.  They live in
Fredericton, but drove to St. John to fly there in TCC.

On the 30th, Ken Patry, Jeff McCrae and I flew the aircraft back to Montreal.

On the 31st TCC flew one trip for folks who had won a flight in the
Lockheed, donated by Air Canada, as part of a fund raiser for the Montreal
General hospital.

Capt. Harvey Reid and I flew TCC to Toronto Thursday night. Capt. Patry
and Capt. Dodds will fly to Winnipeg over the weekend of 4th and 5th. TCC
will undergo a 100 hour inspection there before proceeding to the West Coast.

Regards, Alan MacLeod
( Alan Rust, Web Administrator, ACFamily Network reminds us that TCC updates
and more information is at the web site -   www.acfamily.org/tcc )
