Left RCAF and joined Trans-Canada Jan 4/46.
Served as line pilot till '65 at YWG.
Served as instructor and check pilot till '71 at YWG.
Moved to YVR'72 and retired Jan 1/80.
Flew Lockheed 1408, 1808, DC3, Viscount, DC9, DC8 and retired on 747.
Condider it a privelege to have worked with wonderful people

. Wally Evans recently joined our readership, and sends this bio -
Joined TCA Dec. '54 as shipping clerk at Heathrow for Vickers Viscount
introduction and handled `Comat' (Company material) until transfer to Montreal '68.
Stayed in Purch. & Stores until retirement Jun '91, handling inventory control
and Engine/APU purchasing.
Fond memories of first DC8 trip 1960 and visit to Niagara 1962.
I also enjoyed the extra few months 1995 assisting with A340 introduction

. News from the C.A.I.R.E. Chapters -
On Thursday Nov 23rd, Chapter 2 - Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands held their
bi-monthly luncheon, at the Cottonwood Golf and Country Club in Nanaimo.
Just 99 members and guests enjoyed a buffet style lunch, and listened to
Jo Kennedy proudly announce that 99 was the highest attendance at a luncheon.
Jo reviewed the medical plans available for CAIL retirees, and pointed out that the
travel arrangements are, in fact, a privilege not a right. One reason for the name
' privilege' was to avoid tax purposes. Jo introduced Eileen Brown who will look
after questions regarding the various travel directives. Some of the concerns
were that retirees not on pension did not have provisions for self-ticketing, the
90 day validity period was insufficient and the lack of stop over coupons.
Jo Kennedy introduced 'first timers' to the luncheons, the Executive of the Chapter
and the telephone committee.
Also it was announced that the CAIL retirees in Japan will be setting up a
CAIRE Chapter.
The Annual CAIRE luncheon is planned at the Western Bayshore on Wednesday
April 11th 2001. Cost will be ca$23.00
Jo Kennedy introduced Terry Baker who is an Air Canada retiree, member of the
Vancouver Island Pionairs who talked about the email NetLetter he issues together
with Vesta Stevenson of Victoria, and details of the web site acfamily.org.
He invited anyone with internet facilities to join the present mailing list of
some 1,100 readers.
In closing, Jo Kennedy announced the next luncheon will be held Jan 25th at the
Cowichan Golf Club near Duncan.

Greetings to all Can. Aviation History Buffs,
This is to advise that we had decided to postpone the December
9th meeting until after the New Year, when hopefully things will have
settled down after the Holiday season.
It will be partially a Business meeting but hope to have some speaker or
presentation at this time also.
January 6th is the date selected, this is a Saturday to enable working types
to attend the meetings.  It will start at 1 Pm as the Museum closes at 3 PM
on Saturday so we have to clear out by then.
If you have any question etc please do not hesitate to give me
a Phone call at 250 656 3026 and will be happy to have a yak with you on
the Phone.
I now wish you the Best of Seasons Greetings for the Holiday Season,
and that be a Happy time and will be looking forward to seeing you all
in the New Year.

"Ace McCool" the collector edition" is a compilation of all 164 Ace McCool
columns that ran in the back of Canadian Aviation magazine from 1971 to 1987
(with a break from 1981 to 1983).
The 480 page soft cover book retails for $24.95 and will be available

"Ace McCool" spoofs the airline industry through the laughter-packed
exploits of Down East International, a fictional "fly-by-night" operation based
in Moncton, New Brunswick.
The hilarious adventures of Down East began with Ace McCool, an ex-military
pilot, flying a de Havilland Dragon Rapide through impossible east coast weather.
"The Ace" graduated to DC-3s, Vanguards and then a Boeing 727.
Along the way, he collected a rag-tag bunch of supporting characters:
Dim-witted pilot Pete Braddock,
"who could have flown the crate an airplane came in."
The Smarts, an insufferable Englishman, a "polemaster of the first water."
Churchy Laflamme, "de bes copilot of dem all."
Cowboy McCloskey, the big Albertan who commuted to Down East in his
personal CF-104.
Red Starr, the long-haired hippie pilot who flew approaches in bare feet.
These pilots along with copilot T.I. (Totally Inept) Jacobs, cabin crew Stew Jane,
Crazy Iris and Mile-High Millie, mechanic Phil Lister and others stumble their way
from one slap-stick episode to another.
These are the same tall tales that thousands of aviators laughed along with
in Canadian Aviation magazine.
Now, for the first time they have been assembled in this collectors edition.

About the author
Jack Desmarais was born in Montreal, Quebec.
He first flew with the Royal Canadian Air Force, then was an airline pilot for 37 years.
As a writer he covered air transport for Canadian Aviation magazine for 20 years
writing about new equipment, economics and regulatory affairs.
Desmarais started a humor column in Pilot magazine, writing half a dozen stories
about "Wheeler Deiler," a devil-may-care Maritime pilot. This evolved into
"Ace McCool" which was also expected to be about a half dozen stories.
The column ran for 14 1/2 years in Canadian Aviation.
Jack Desmarais is now retired and lives in Toronto, Ontario.
He is currently at work on a play.

I was interested in Ross Smyth's item re the Hudson bombers in 1940.
I recall so vividly when a number of Hudson bombers arrived in YWG around that time
enroute to Montreal for ferrying overseas.
They were quite a sight with their camouflage paint jobs and attracted a lot of
public attention. They were being guarded while parked at Stevenson Field by
military personnel complete with rifles and fixed bayonets.
A rather amusing incident occurred when one of the guards doing his "rifle thing",
managed to punch a hole in the wing of one of the Hudsons with his bayonet.

. From the YYZNEWS issued by Brian Dunn -

The second Canadian Airlines 747-475 (C-FCRA) has been rolled out of the
paint shop this morning at YYZ in the "new" AC transitional paint scheme.
It was towed to the Canadian hangar at the south end of the airport for two days
of work before it flys out to Vancouver.
Air Canada is in talks to share services with a Chinese carrier to tap
domestic demand, seen as a rising market.  The carrier hopes to reach an
agreement in the first half of 2001.  With daily A340 service now from
Vancouver to Shanghai as well as daily 767-300 service to Beijing the airline
would like to code-share with one of the larger Chinese carriers.
This could be Air China, based in Beijing, or China Eastern which is
based in Shanghai.
China Southern may be another option which is
based in Guangzhou (formerly Canton).
Air Canada says it plans to invest $150million in Shanghai bringing its total
investment in China to $250million.  The earlier investments focused on Beijing.
China currently represents between 3 and 5 per cent of Air Canada's total sales!
