. Pass holders take note -
Economy class syndrome kills air passenger
Air passengers are being warned of the dangers of lethal thrombosis during
long-haul air journeys. It is believed that the passenger died from the so-called
"economy class syndrome" after flying 12,000 miles from Australia in a cramped
seating position.  Tests showed the passenger died from deep-veined thrombosis
(DVT) which is suffered by dozens of airline passengers each year.
The parents of the passenger have urged long-haul airline operators to give pre-flight
warnings of the dangers of DVT to passengers.

Firearm discharges at Alaska Airlines Ticket Counter
According to Alaska Airlines, a FedEx non-revenue employee's handgun discharged
after security personnel noticed loose ammunition in his checked baggage.
Even though the FedEx employee declared the weapon in his baggage per FAA
regulations, he failed to ensure that the handgun was unloaded. When security
personnel noticed the loose ammunition during a routine x-ray examination they
asked the passenger to return to the ticket counter to secure the ammunition
per FAA regulations.
When the FedEx employee opened the bag to remove the handgun the weapon
discharged hitting a computer monitor. The bullet fragments then passed through an
unoccupied supervisor's office.
Sources at Alaska Airlines stated that the FedEx employee was allowed to continue
on his trip to Seattle, but he had to pay full fare.
Alaska Airlines is reviewing its pass policy with FedEx over the incident, and
may revoke the FedEx employee's pass privileges on the airline permanently.

. Found on the internet.
BA in talks with Air France, Delta
British Airways Plc has begun talks on a possible alliance with Air France and
Delta Air Lines that could lead to the breakup of the UK carrier's Oneworld alliance.
Speculation over BA's next move has swirled since the failure in September
of its planned merger with Dutch airline KLM , but a BA spokeswoman would only
say that the company talked to different airlines all the time and declined comment
on the reports.

Airbus pitches A3XX with 880 seats to Japan
Airbus Industrie executives are trying to interest Japanese airlines on a no-frills
version of the double-decker A3XX that would seat 880 passengers.
That would be a big jump over the 580 passengers that can be carried in a one-class
Boeing 747 now used on some of Japan's high-density domestic routes.

FRENCH FLYERS LIKELY TO INVADE CANADA:
The Canadian Defense Department may be as few as two weeks away from
allowing the French to operate low-level subsonic training flights out of the Goose Bay
military site in northeast Canada.  The flights would begin in August 2001, to the
dismay of native peoples living in the northeastern Quebec and Labrador regions.

. Bob Belding of the Montreal Pionairs recently visited the Heathrow Lodge Motel,
and the prices reported in NetLetter    certainly were not the same as his party paid.
The following message is from Jack Morath - London, England Pionairs -
Re the Heathrow Lodge Motel, I phoned them and they confirmed  that
the prices I quoted were correct at the time I asked originally and also
that there was an increase on lst october to GBP37.5O for a double room basic
price and GBP47.5O En Suite which includes the shuttle bus.   The non airline
rate as you say is £67.OO.   He said this was a very good rate for the area
when I questioned the increase amount.   Their phone number by the way is
Ol753 68697O.

. Jack and Aureen Morath - London England Pionairs, recently took a jaunt to
Cape Town in South Africa -
Had a great trip to Cape Town .   Guest House very nice and clean and only ten
minutes from the Waterfront area which is fairly new and still being added to.
Did an open top double deck bus tour of the city and also went up Table Mountain
in their new cable cars.
Visited the Ostrich Farm and tried Ostrich steak which was not very nice
also a penguin colony, the Cape of Good Hope and saw some whales and seals
playing in the sea very close up.   Weather around 70 degrees which was
cold for them but not for us.  It was a long journey though - eleven hours
and twenty minutes back to London.
