Tenzing Communications Inc., a global communications provider and Air Canada
announced on September 12th the successful completion of a joint technical trial deploying the Tenzing system on five Air Canada aircraft. The test, completed on Tuesday Sep 5th, marks the first time in history that in-flight email has been sent upon a commercial aircraft utilizing a system specifically designed to support email communication. Air Canada is
one of six major airline carriers to agree to deploy and/or test Tenzing's in-flight communications services. Air Canada will launch a passenger trial of the service beginning
the fourth quarter of 2000.
The Sep. 5th trial was done on board Air Canada's Boeing 767-233 (FIN607).

. Update on CF-TCC sent by Alan Macleod -
Subject: Lockheed Tango Charlie Charlie, Last update for 2000
The Lockheed did yeoman's work in Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg.
After spending 11 days in the Calgary Shell Aero Center hangar, and having a great
wash and cleaning job performed, the Lockheed was rolled out on Sept. 7th, sparkling
and like new. Gerry Norberg and Ted Dodds flew her to Edmonton to be in place for
DREAMS FLYING on Sept. 8,9,10 and 11. They had with them one of the ramp staff
from Calgary. He had given up his seat to accommodate a handicapped passenger who
was unable to obtain a seat during the Calgary DREAMS FLYING weekend. Because of
his generous gesture he was invited to fly to Edmonton with the aircraft.
He subsequently made his own way back to Calgary.
Four days of flying went off without a hitch in Edmonton. Three days from the City Center
airport and the final day from the International airport. Flights were operated from the
museum at the City Center and Shell Aero Center at the International. Thanks again to
Shell for providing the fuel and the use of the Aero Center at the International. Dan Lillie
was the AME who gave his time over the weekend. Dan has been associated with TCC
now for many years.
After flying was completed on the 11th Dodds and Norberg, accompanied by Dan Lillie
decided to take advantage of a strong westerly wind aloft and ferry TCC to Winnipeg.
They arrived in Winnipeg at 9pm after a four hour and five minute non stop flight.
TCC had three days rest in Winnipeg and then was back on the line again at the Western
Canadian Aviation Museum. Capt. Norberg and myself flew three days there, the 15th,16th and 17th. Flights were almost full and after the TV spot was aired, the demand for seats rocketed. Geof McCrea, George Huntington Collin Shabaga and mike Clarkson were available for the AME duties should we have needed them. The aircraft worked like a
Swiss watch and no snags developed. As a matter of record, throughout the summer
months from April 26th until Sept. 17th nothing of any consequence developed to delay
the operation. Routine maintenance consisting of a 25, 50, 75 and 100 hour inspection
was all that was necessary. New tires are in stores and will be installed. A new rotating
beacon and a replacement strobe light was all that was required over the months.
Now that's performance! It's interesting to note that the maintenance schedule being
maintained is the same one which was approved in 1937 by the the D.O.T., when the
aircraft was in active line service. That same schedule was still on record with the now
M.O.T., when the aircraft was put back in service, and was adopted again under the
present fleet maintenance program. Some things never change!
TCC is back in the hangar in Winnipeg. It will be cleaned, have the tires installed along
with some other minor items done. It will then be given another 100 hour inspection
before being put in the museum for the winter.
During the summer months, not one day was canceled because of weather. The aircraft
flew IFR during the ferry trips to keep it on schedule but fortunately every station where
it was scheduled to fly was blessed with great weather for the flights.
Lockheed TCC flew 160hrs 36 minutes from April 26th through Sept.17th. During that
period a total of 1,502 people, from Halifax to Vancouver, experienced the thrill of a
flight just like it was in the 1930's. One passenger, Herman De Wulf, came all the way
from Brussels specifically to have a thirty minute flight. He holds the record for a
passenger coming the furthest. This all made possible by the generosity of Air Canada,
Shell Oil Corporation of Canada, the Dreams Take Flight staff who volunteered their time
across the system, all the licensed aircraft maintenance engineers and the five pilots.
Because of the above some needy and sick children will have a DREAM COME TRUE.

Found on the internet.
The top six U.S. airlines have added a new price hike on
domestic fares amounting to $20 per round-trip ticket -- the
fourth increase this year -- to counteract sky-high fuel prices,
fare experts said. The airlines are calling the increase a fuel
surcharge, meaning it does not immediately show up in the posted
price of the ticket, whether checked online, over the telephone
with the airline or through a travel agent. It comes on top of a
previous $20 round-trip, or $10 each way, surcharge added in
January. There have been two regular price hikes since then, which
are included in listed fares.
Wright Plane Replica Planned
From the delicate ash and spruce framework to
the sturdy cotton fabric covering the wings, an inch-by-inch
replica of the Wright brothers' 1903 flying machine is taking
shape. Retired airline pilot Ken Hyde of Warrenton, Va., is chief
builder of the aircraft that a group of flying enthusiasts hopes to
get airborne at 10:35 a.m. on Dec. 17, 2003. That would be 100 years
to the minute after the two brothers from Ohio first saw their lithe
wood-and-muslin craft lift off the dunes of Kitty Hawk in North
Carolina's Outer Banks. Hyde and his sponsors announced the project
beneath the Wright brothers' aircraft, which hangs from the rafters
of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

In NetLetter 518 we quoted some costs for transportation from various airports.
Jean Le Pottier sends us this information -
Hi ! re your quotation of ground transportation cost CDG/ Paris : 37 fr .
Let me clarify this . There are different ways to travel from CDG airport to the city
Air France runs a bus service to Paris Porte Maillot and to l'Etoile : Arc
de Triomphe ( Champs-Elysees ) .
Good service with a departure during day time every 15 minutes . The cost,
last May , was 55 fr one-way.
A passenger can also reach Paris by train from the station at the airport .
Free shuttles drive passenger to the rail terminal , destination Paris Gare
du Nord . A bit cheaper than the AF bus .
Cheaper but much longer ; a bus service , the types we see in Paris . Very
slow service . You have to cart your bags all the way.
And in view of the current situation in France , bring your jerricans.
