We received the following query from Jack Desmarais -
A friend of mine travelling on an AC "buddy pass" was told by YWG ECC she
could not register there but had to call the general res number.
My buddy called general res, who told her she could not register herself, the
employee/retiree had to do it for her.
Since a call is a call is a call, why is this? The traveller might change his
travel plans, be bumped and have to re-list for the next day, etc. Does he
have to call the employee/retiree each time to re-list him?
The following reply Industry Travel received from ECC -
"ECC only accepts calls from the employee to order partner passes
and the employees themselves must register their partners for any
outbound flights. In an attempt to cut down the length of our
calls we implemented the latter, as were finding that most partners
that called were quite uninformed about procedures, etc. To sum it
up, before any travel takes place we will only communicate with the
employee. The partner can, however, call us for the return flight
registration and inquiries."
Industry travel adds -
With the speech recognition system kicking in next month, believe
we will ask Call Centres to clearly tabulate WHO should call WHERE
and publish via Horizons, Pionaair Netletter, etc.

YVR Pionairs News Update:
Subject: YVR Pionairs BBQ Thursday August 10th
The very first ever YVR Pionairs BBQ was an outstanding success as Sunny Skys
prevailed over 80 Pionairs at the Woodwards Landing picnic site in Richmond last
Thursday August 10th. A par three golf tournament, croquet games, much visiting and
conversations, chip and veggie dips etc, leading up to Master Chef Marv Lohnes
making much to do at the BBQ, couching four very large and juicy beef loins to perfection,
and on time for the feast that followed. It was potato salad, coldslaw, rolls & butter,
pickles, mixed veggies, followed by a very large cut of tender beef for everyone, and
concluding with carrot cake and coffee. Naturally throughout there was the sound of
clinking (plastic glasses) and the pouring of many toasts to mark the occasion.
Committee Chair for this event was Glen Steeves ably assisted by Jeanie Chenenko,
Lorrie Rossler, Kay Lohnes, Joan and Tom Milton, Jean Hancock, Vince Brimicombe,
and not to be forgotten Master Chef Marv Lohnes.
Just another Happy Days event in the life of YVR Pionairs.

. bio on Joe Mallory retired recently
Joe moved from the IT group to work permanently for Purchasing and
Supply, Purchasing and Facilities, Maintenance & Engineering, Tech Ops
etc (One of the above). Joe then work as Systems Analyst on the MAP
System. This was at the time when we were just introducing PC's and
exploring their potential while still firmly dedicated to exploiting
MAP and the beginnings of e-commerce called ATA Spec 200 and Spec
2000. Both Bob Carson and Joe figured prominently in the development
of these protocols but especially Joe for his work on Spec 2000
capabilities. During this time Joe was also very much involved in
trying to save the company money. The suggestions program was very
important in doing this. Joe was heavily involved in migrating from
our legacy system MAP to ARTOS. Through it all Joe prevailed. Solid
as a rock, keeping us headed in the right direction_.what's the
saying, "As always, victory finds a hundred fathers but defeat is an
orphan." However, these projects did take their toll on Joe.
Joe has decided to retire from Air Canada and take on other challenges in Toronto.

WOODBURN, Ore. -- After almost 30 years, one man -- and one unsolved case --
still haunts retired FBI agent Ralph Himmelsbach:
D.B. Cooper. Cooper, a chain-smoking, middle-aged man in a suit and black
sunglasses, hijacked a Northwest Airlines flight from Portland to Seattle in November
1971. He then strapped $200,000 to his waist and parachuted into a stormy night
10,000 feet to the ground. He was never found. Himmelsbach had chased down leads,
questioned suspects and fielded fruitless phone calls. A framed $20 bill, eaten away at
the edges, hangs in his office, one of the few traces that remains of the world's only
unsolved skyjacking.

The world's biggest commercial jetliner was supposed to usher in a new era of luxury
air travel."Like nothing seen before in the air . . . the interior may look more like a
large parlor with lounges instead of a tube full of separate seats," gushed one aerospace
writer. "One possibility is a movie theater. Another is a library, and still another is a
nursery. There could be private conference rooms for business executives . . .
staterooms housing four passengers each, including beds and private lavatories.
" That breathless description could have been written about the Airbus A3XX
superjumbo. But it appeared in a Seattle Post-Intelligencer story about the Boeing 747
in 1966, three years before the jumbo jet made its maiden flight.

ANCHORAGE - A Seattle-bound airliner continued on its way from here last week after
a flight attendant rounded up a couple of errant snakes that had been brought aboard
the aircraft. Concerned that reptiles had infested the cabin the flight crew was
considering an emergency landing at Juneau before a passenger said that there were
only two snakes and that they were harmless pets, Alaska Airlines spokesman
Jack Evans said.
